It is an age-old question which has been around possibly since the invention of underwear, and it is a question that resurfaces every so often as more scientific discoveries are made. Belle Lingerie have weighed in and shared their thoughts on what you should, or should not wear when going to bed.
Whether you’re wearing your satin briefs or going commando there are many things to consider before deciding on your bedtime attire.
Recent stories about Kaela, a 26-year-old woman who was hospitalised after her underwear caused a cut which led to an infection have once more brought this question to the forefront.
Whilst Kaela’s situation is not a common one, the cause of her issues is something that could affect anyone.
Hygiene is a vital element of consideration when it comes to whether or not you should be wearing underwear to bed. When we wear underwear to bed, we are trapping heat and moisture in that area, which as we know are the perfect conditions for bacteria to thrive.
For women, the vaginal microbiome is one of the most important biological components and plays an important role in vaginal health and preventing disease and is delicately balanced.
Wearing underwear to bed- especially ones worn throughout the day, can allow bacteria and yeast to grow, which can cause infection as well as other problems. Despite this, a survey by MattressNextDay shockingly discovered that more than half of respondents (51%) stated they’ve never thought of changing their underwear at night.
Although there is much expert advice against wearing underwear to bed, there is equally expert advice on the opposite side of this discussion. According to OB-GYN Dr. Sherry A. Ross, wearing clean underwear also provides a barrier against dirt and bacteria in the genital area.
Other experts such as sleep coach James Wilson have previously pointed out how when we pass gas, research shows that trace amounts of faecal matter are expelled at the same time. In these cases you may feel it is more hygienic to keep underwear on.
Other reasons to keep your pants on include preventing leakages, whether that be discharge, blood or other bodily fluids, and preventing irritation in sensitive areas from your bed sheets.
Ultimately, whether you wear underwear to bed or not is a personal choice, as Janine Dutton, Belle Lingerie’s owner explained;
“Wearing underwear to bed is down to individual preference. Moreover, everyone is different, and there will be pros and cons for each person. Tight fitting underwear will reduce air getting to sensitive areas, so if you do choose to wear underwear to bed, make sure it’s comfortable and loose fitting”
Ultimately, whether you opt to go without, or if you prefer that comforting protection underwear can provide, it’s a personal choice. For those of us who choose to wear our knickers to bed, it’s advisable to wear a fresh pair to bed, and opt for more breathable materials such as cotton over synthetic materials such as nylon or spandex.
