Bluecats Lose to Brady
10/24/2008

Hufford Field was packed, on both sides, Friday night to watch the 2A Game of the Week in West Texas, between the Coleman Bluecats and the Brady Bulldogs. After the dust had settled, the Bulldogs handed the Bluecats their second straight district loss, 49-22. Brady remains perfect in district and undefeated on the season.  The Bluecats are 6-2 on the season and 2-2 in District.  Coleman travels to play in Early this coming Friday night.  Early lost to Comanche Friday night making them 1-3 in district.

1st Quarter

Coleman took the opening kickoff from Brady's Xander Leatherwood. The kick was taken by Glen Edington at the four yard line who returned the ball to the Bluecat 23. From the shotgun formation, QB Colton Buzzard handed the ball to Edington who gained five yards on the first play. After a running play to Edington,, which was stopped for no gain, Buzzard passed to Dalton DeLeon for a first down to the 37. Then, from the Bluecat 30, Buzzard lofted a deep pass completion to Trent Hambright at the Bulldog 34. Edington ran a counter play and gained three. Now at the 30 yard line, Buzzard passed deep downfield to the end zone, intended for DeLeon, but the ball was intercepted in the end zone by Ruben Resendez of Brady.

Taking possession at their own 20, Brady opened with a screen pass for six yards with the tackle made by Stan Cole. The next play featured a gang tackling Bluecat "D" which caused Brady to lose three yards. From the shotgun, at the 23 yard line, QB Mackenzie Hirt passed to Travis Tuckness who rambled to the Coleman 30. T
hen, with a simple handoff to Prennis Williams, he scampered 30 yards for a touchdown with 7:49 remaining in the 1st Quarter. The PAT kick was good by Leatherwood to give Brady a 7-0 advantage.

Leatherwood kicked to Coleman, taken by Edington at the 9 and returned to the 25. Zach Doyle carried the ball on a counter play and gained one. Buzzard passed to DeLeon but he was interfered with by Brady's Travis Tuckness. The penalty moved the ball to the Bluecat 39. Buzzard wanted to go to the air again but was tackled at the line of scrimmage. Facing 2nd and 10, from the shotgun, Buzzard ran the option pitch to Edington who ran to the Coleman sideline, tackled at the 47. Now 3rd and 2, Buzzard kept the ball and was tackled for a one yard loss by Tuckness. Forced to punt, Buzzard kicked from the 36 to the Brady 16, muffed by Mackenzie Hirt but he recovered. A penalty flag was thrown on the Bluecats for a personal foul which moved the ball to the Brady 31.

From the 31, the Bulldogs QB Hirt ran right and gained 32 yards to the Bluecat 37. Williams then ran the ball at the heart of the Bluecat defense to the 30. Williams ran again but a holding call moved the ball back to the Bluecat 40. With 2nd and 13, Hirt ran to the right and gained 5. Now 3rd and 8, Hirt passed to Tuckness at the 20 for a first down. FB Jake Long ran for four hard yards to the 16. Hirt then rolled left and was sacked by Carlos Barrios with assistance by Adam Jimenez. From the 23, in the shotgun, Hirt ran the shuttle pass to Long who got to the 13, setting up 4th and 2.

2nd Quarter
After changing ends of the field to begin a new quarter, the Bulldogs facing 4th and 2, a hard count by QB Hirt drew the Bluecats offside, a five yard penalty, good for a first down. First and goal at the Bluecat 8, Williams ran to the right, tackled by Jonathon Sanchez.
At the 4, Hirt pitched left to Jake Long who scored with 11:01 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Leatherwood's PAT kick was good, making the score 14-0.

Leatherwood's kick was taken by Glen Edington who returned the kick from the seven to the 30 yard line. Kahlam Salazar ran the ball for three yards. Edington then ran for a first down to the 40. Buzzard then passed to Edington for 15 yards and a first down, followed by a run right by Buzzard to the Bulldog 33 for another first down. A run by Buzzard lost three. Buzzard then was flushed from the pocket and picked his way to the Bulldog 27. In some pain from a hard tackle, Buzzard managed to complete a pass to Travis Brixey near the 23. After a timeout, and facing a big 4th and 1, Buzzard pitched left to Glen Edington who gained a first down at the Bulldog 19. Buzzard passed to DeLeon who gained 5 on the Coleman sideline. Now from the Brady 14, Buzzard's pass to the end-zone, intended for Edington, fell incomplete. If at first you don't succeed, try again.
This time, Buzzard rolled right and passed to DeLeon for a 14 yard touchdown at 6:33 remaining in the quarter. Buzzard's extra point kick was wide right, making the score Brady 14, Coleman 6.

Carlos Barrios kicked to Brady's Zech Conrad who returned the ball from the 15 to Coleman's 27 yard line. Hirt handed to Prennis Williams around the left side for 9 yards. On the next play, the Bluecat "D" came to life with Adam Jimenez stopping QB Hirt for a loss of five. From the 24, Hirt took the snap, rolled right, was rushed by Jamal Agbor who caused a fumble, recovered by Carlos Barrios at the Bluecat 32.

With 4:51 before the half, Edington ran a counter play to the Bluecat sidelined, tackled late out of bounds, with no penalty on Brady. Buzzard then ran the option pitch to Salazar who fumbled the ball at the Bulldog 38.

With 4:32 before the half, Brady called a time out before running their next play. Starting at their own 38, QB Hirt passed to Tuckness at the 48 for a first down. In the shotgun, Hirt handed to Jake Long who scampered 50 yards to the Bluecat three yard line. First and goal, the Bulldog's Lonnie Williams gained one to the two yard line.
Jake Long then scored on a run off left tackle with 3:15 left in the half. Leatherwood's extra point kick was wide right but there was a penalty flag at the line of scrimmage, offsides against the Bluecats. Lining up again, Leatherwood split the uprights to give the Bulldogs a 21-6 lead.

Leatherwood kicked to Edington who returned the ball from the four to the 24. With 3:08 before the half, the Bluecats ran the shotgun, with Buzzard handing to Edington for no gain. Buzzard then completed a pass to DeLeon at the 27. Buzzard then flipped a shuttle pass over Salazar's head, out of bounds.  Facing 4th and 7, Buzzard punted the ball to the Brady 42.

With 1:43 remaining in the first half, QB Hirt completed a long pass to Tuckness at the Bluecat 35. Hirt then tripped and fell after being stepped on by his own lineman, a loss of five. From the 39, Hirt passed from the shotgun to Jake Long who ran to the Bluecat 28 where a timeout was called. With :45 seconds remaining in the half, Hirt carried the ball around the left side to the Bluecat 15 for a first down. Hirt then barked a hard count and, once again, drew the Bluecats offside, a five yard penalty, moving the ball to the Coleman 10. Hirt passed to the end zone on the fade but it was incomplete to Zach Jones. Facing 2nd and 5 at the Bluecat 10, Long ran around the left side to the Bluecat 7. Brady called another timeout with :25 remaining in the first half.
Hirt then threw another fade pass into the end zone for a touchdown to Zach Jones with :19 left in the half. Leatherwood's extra point kick was good to make the score Brady 28, Coleman 6.

Leatherwood's kickoff was taken by Trent Hambright and returned to the Bluecat 40 with :12 remaining in the first half. Buzzard, from the shotgun, passed incomplete to DeLeon on the Coleman sideline. With :09 remaining, from the shotgun, Buzzard completed a pass to Travis Brixey who ran to the Brady 45 for a first down.
With :01 on the clock, Buzzard threw to the end zone for a miraculous touchdown caught in the end zone by a leaping #11, Trent Hambright, as time expired. Buzzard then passed to DeLeon for the two point conversion (shown below) sending the teams into the locker rooms with Brady ahead 28 to 14 but the Bluecats ahead in the momentum department..

3rd Quarter
Carlos Barrios kicked to the Bulldogs to begin the final 24 minutes. The kick was a short, low, line drive to Brady's Jose Ramirez at the Brady 45. Paying the price running the ball was Brady's Josh Behrens who was mowed down by LB Stan Cole for a short loss. A tackle trap play gained four. From the shotgun, Hirt completed a pass to Travis Tuckness for a first down to the Bluecat 44. Hirt handed to the short, but stout, Jake Long for a gain of four. From the Bluecat 40, Hirt ran a counter fake and gained four yards over the left side, bringing up third down and a long one. Hirt pitched left to Long who gained two yards and a first down at the Bluecat 33.
From the shotgun again, Hirt completed a pass to Josh Behrens at the 20 who ran in for the score with 8:36 left in the 3rd. The momentum swung back to Brady. Leatherwood's extra point kick was good. A referee's penalty for roughing the kicker was declined so Brady kicked from the 40, ahead 35 to 14.

The left footed Leatherwood kicked to Edington who returned the ball from the 5 yard line to the 20. Brady's kicker is good, consistently kicking the ball deep inside the 10 yard line. Buzzard started Coleman's first offensive series with a pass to Brixey who dropped the ball near the Brady sideline. Buzzard then ran the option keeper and gained 2 yards to the 25. Buzzard, back to pass, was flushed from the pocket and tackled at the 27, forcing a Bluecat punt, by Buzzard. The snap was high, the punt was short and traveled only to the Bluecat 43.

With 6:47 left in the 3rd, the Bulldogs ran the shotgun again, QB Hirt completing yet another pass to Travis Tuckness who gained 14 to the Bluecat 28. Jake Long then ran up the middle for only one yard, tackled by Sanchez and Cole.
Hirt then found Tuckness wide open in the end zone for a 27 yard touchdown pass with 5:38 left in the 3rd quarter. Leatherwood's extra point kick was good, making the score Brady 42, Coleman 14.

Leatherwood's kick went, once again, to Glen Edington who returned the ball from the five to the 31. QB Colton Buzzard ran the ball left and out of bounds on the Coleman sideline, a gain of 9 yards to the 40. From the shotgun, Buzzard completed a pass for a first down to Travis Brixey (88) at the Bluecat 49 with 5:17 remaining in the 3rd,
(shown left).

Buzzard then completed a pass to DeLeon who was tackled on the Coleman sideline at the Brady 45, a gain of six. Out of the pro set shotgun, Buzzard pitched right to Edington on the option but a holding penalty on the Bluecats moved the ball back to the Bluecat 45. Buzzard then ran left, reversed right, dropped the ball but recovered it at the 41, making it 3rd and 18. Buzzard completed a pass to Dalton DeLeon at the Brady 47, making for 4th down and 7. Buzzard completed a pass to Kahlam Salazar on the Bluecat sideline who collided with Brady's Jose Ramirez, short of a first down at the Brady 45.  The ball went over on downs.

Handing off to Jake Long, the little but powerful fullback kept his legs moving and drug a huge pile of players to the first down. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Brady nullified the gain and moved the ball back to the Brady 40, still 1st and 10. The officials moved the chains back to the 40 yard line, an unpopular call with the blue and white fans. On the next play, QB Hirt was sacked by Devan Densman at the Bulldog 30. Now 2nd and 20 at the 30, Hirt tossed the shuttle pass to Long who was tackled at the 32 by Cole and Densman. Facing 3rd and 18, Hirt fired deep down the Brady sideline, incomplete intended for Lonnie Williams, covered by DeLeon. With 4th and long, the Bulldogs called a time out with :18 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Leatherwood came in to punt and booted the ball from his own 22. The ball bounced at the Bluecat 40 and rolled to a stop at the 35.

Starting at their own 35, Buzzard completed a pass to DeLeon at the 45. Salazar then ran to the Bulldog 49 to end the 3rd quarter.

4th Quarter
From the Brady 49, out of the shotgun, Buzzard completed a pass to DeLeon for a first down at the 42. A face mask penalty on the Bulldogs moved the ball to the 26. Rolling right, Buzzard threw an incomplete pass to DeLeon, almost intercepted by Tuckness.

Then, possible the play of the night, Trent Hambright used his height to make another miraculous catch at the Brady 15 but, the penalty bug bit Coleman, an unsportsmanlike conduct call moved the ball back to the 28. Buzzard completed a sideline pass to DeLeon for the first down at the 13. Buzzard then threw an incomplete pass to Brixey. Buzzard then passed to DeLeon in the end zone, incomplete, but a five yard offsides penalty on the Bulldogs moved the ball to the 8. Salazar's run was stopped for a two yard loss to the 10. Buzzard then passed incomplete to Glen Edington in the end zone but another five yard offsides penalty on Brady placed the ball at the five yard line, with 3rd and 2 need for a first. In the shotgun, Buzzard passed to Jamal Agbor who dropped the football at the goal line. Now 4th and 2 at the Brady five, Buzzard pitched right to Glen Edington who was stopped at the Brady 5, just short of a first down, ending the Bluecat's hopes for a score.

With 10:02 remaining in the game, Brady's Jake Long ran for five yards to the 10 to give the Bulldogs breathing room. Long then ran the ball to the 18 for a first down. Behrens ran right but tripped over his own lineman and lost a yard. Long then ran up the middle of the Bluecat "D" to the 26. Long then bulled his way to another Brady first down at the 32. Brady looked content to eat time off the clock with a conservative running game. Isaiah Conrad then ran for one yard, followed by another run for two to the 35 yard line. A hard count by QB Hirt drew the Bluecat defense offsides for the third time during the game, a five yard penalty moving the ball to the 40.
Hirt then ran an off tackle play to the right and converted a quarterback sneak, designed to get a first down, into a 60 yard touchdown with 4:44left in the game. Leatherwood's extra point kick was down the middle giving Brady a 49-14 lead.

Leatherwood's squib kick was gathered up by Trent Hambright at the 35 yard line. Hambright returned the ball to the midfield stripe.  Buzzard passed to DeLeon for an eight yard gain. Buzzard then dumped a pass to the right flat, intended for Doyle, but incomplete with pressure coming from Brady. A pitch sweep to Edington gave the Bluecats a first down at the 30.
Buzzard then completed a 30 yard touchdown pass to Andrew Isom with 3:41 left in the game. Buzzard called his own number on a two point run for the extra point, making the score Brady 49, Coleman 22.

Setting up for an obvious onside kick, Carlos Barrios kicked the ball short to Brady's Eric Hernandez who appeared to touch the ball before it rolled out of bounds at the Brady 32, Bulldog football.

With 3:41 still remaining, a new quarterback, Ruben Resendez, handed the ball to Zech Conrad who gained one. After a Bluecat timeout, a quarterback sneak by Resendez was stopped short by Jamal Agbor, followed by another timeout. Facing 3rd and 6, the Bulldogs ran a reverse for a first down to the 47, by Zech Conrad. Another run by Jose Ramirez gained one. The next run was fumbled but recovered by Conrad. He followed that run with another one to the 50 followed by the final Bluecat timeout with :59 seconds left. Punting on 4th and six, Leatherwood sent the ball to the Bluecat 22.

In their final opportunity, Buzzard completed a pass to DeLeon out of bounds. Buzzard then threw a 26 yard pass to Andrew Isom, who also drew a pass interference penalty, declined by the Bluecats at the 45. Buzzard completed another pass to Travis Brixey who got out of bounds at the 38. Buzzard then tossed an incomplete pass in the middle of the field to DeLeon, causing the clock to stop with :19 remaining. From the 38, Buzzard then threw an incomplete pass to Hambright near the end zone. With :11 seconds left, Buzzard completed a pass to Kyle Kemp who got out of bounds near the first down at the 35. An official's time out was called for a measurement, showing the ball short of the first down, giving Brady the final possession. The Bulldogs took a knee and ran out the clock, winning 49-22.

7th Grade Beat Brady
10/24/2008
The Coleman Bluecat 7th grade defeated Brady Thursday night 28 - 22 in an exciting game. The win moves the 7th grade to 3 - 2 on the year.  Coach Brink reported that this was the youngster's most consistent game. Jansen Merrill opened the scoring with a 15-yard run and Draven DelaGarza added the 2-point conversion.  DelaGarza scored again, this time on a 30-yard bootleg run. The try for 2 was stopped short.  Coco Smith scored next on a 20-yard run on the countertrap. Again the 2-point conversion was no good.  Coleman's last points came on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by DelaGarza and Coco Smith added the 2-point conversion.  Brady closed the score to 28-22 but the 7th graders were able to run out the clock for the win.  Coach Brink noted an increased level of intensity for the young Cats. Next Thursday they will play at Early at 5:00pm.

The 7th Grade was defeated by Bangs Thursday. The final score was Bangs 30 Coleman 12. Scoring for The Bluecats were Fullback Jansen Merrill and J-Back Draven Dela Garza. The 7th grade’s next game will be here on Thursday, October 23 against the Brady Bulldogs. Game time 5:00pm.

8th Grade Junior High Football
10/20/2008
The 8th Grade lost to Bangs by the score of 22-0. Coleman’s Defense played really well against Bang’s running game, but was unable to defend the pass. Bang’s scored on 3 big play via the air. Coleman’s offense was not as effective as it normally is. Coleman had several good drives, but were unable to put the ball in the End Zone. Talon King came in and did a good job of running the team after an injury to QB Anthony Thomas. Coleman’s next game will be here at 6:30, on Thursday, October 23 against the Brady Bulldogs.

Dragons Hand Cats Their First District Loss
10/19/2008

The Bluecats received their first loss of the 2008 District 8-AA season to Bangs on Friday, October 17th.  It was definitely a defensive battle with only 2 touchdowns scored by both teams.
1st Quarter
Bangs' opening kickoff went out of bounds. Coleman's 3rd down run by Stanley Cole gave them a 1st down on their own 40 yard line. Glen Edington then ran for 8 yards making it 2nd and 2 on the 48 yard line. Quarterback Colton Buzzard then kept the ball and ran for a first down to Bangs' 49 yard line. Buzzard then threw an incomplete pass to Travis Brixey. On 2nd down Cole ran out of bounds just shy of a first down. Buzzard's keeper got a 1st down on the next play. Coleman was on Bangs' 37 yard line. Edington gained 3, Cole carried for 6, then on 3rd down, Edington ran to the 23 yard line for another 1st down with 7:11 left in the 1st quarter. Cole then carried the ball 14 yards to the 9 yard line for 1st and goal. Buzzard was sacked for a 3 yard loss, then Cole was stopped for another 1 yard loss putting the Cats on the 13 yard line. A pass from Buzzard to Dalton DeLeon was caught out of the end zone, so was ruled incomplete. The field goal attempted by Buzzard was blocked, so Bangs took over the ball on their own 20 yard line.

On Bangs' first play from scrimmage there was a penalty flag thrown, which gave them 1st and 8 (marked off from the spot of the foul). An incomplete pass gave them 2nd and 8. A Quarterback keeper was stopped after gaining a first down on their own 47 yard line. After short yardage gains, Bangs had 3rd and 4 from Coleman's 47. A penalty against Bangs for a 5 yard loss gave them 3rd and 9. An incomplete pass out of bounds forced the Dragons to punt with 2:30 left in the 1st quarter.

On the punt, the ball hit one of Coleman's players on the foot and Bangs covered the ball giving them possession on Coleman's 16 yard line. Bangs had a 2 yard gain to the 14 yard line, then a fumble was recovered for a loss. On 3rd and 12 the QB carried for a 3 yard gain. On 4th down the pass was knocked down in the end zone by Dalton DeLeon, preventing a touchdown and giving Coleman possession of the ball.

Coleman took over on downs on their own 16 yard line with 1:03 left in the 1st quarter. Buzzard was sacked for a 2 yard loss. On 2nd and 12 Kahlam Salazar carried to the 25 yard line for a 3rd and 1 to end the first quarter.

2nd Quarter
For the first play of the quarter Salazar got a 1st down on the 28 yard line. Edington then received a pitchout, but he was tackled for a loss of 2 yards. An incomplete pass gave Coleman 3rd down and 12. On the next play Salazar was carrying the ball and Bangs stripped it away from him - running to the Bluecats' 11 yard line. On 2nd and 8, the QB kept the ball and was pushed out of bounds with a 1 yard loss. Gary Heath then had the stop on the 5 yard line.
On 4th and 4, the field goal kicked by Bangs was good making the score Bangs 3 - Coleman 0 with 9:07 left in the first half.

Edington received the kickoff and was stopped at the 33 yard line. Edington carried for no gain, then gained 6 on the next carry, which gave the Cats 3rd and 4 from the 39 yard line. Buzzard's pass to Salazar fell incomplete. On 4th down a quick kick by Buzzard gave Bangs the ball on their own 33 yard line.

For their first play for this series, Bangs' pass was complete for a 1st down on the Coleman 44 yard line. Glen Edington
(Pictured Left courtesy of Gary Strickland of StricksPics) stopped Bangs behind the line of scrimmage for 4 yard loss on their next play. A QB keeper was taken down behind the line of scrimmage, and a penalty against Bangs was declined by the Cats giving the Dragons a 3rd down and 14 yards to go for a first down. Kyle Kemp in the secondary knocked down the pass which forced Bangs to punt on 4th down.

Bangs downed the punt on Coleman's 18 yard line for the Cats next possession with 5:29 left in the first half. Offsides against Coleman gave them 1st and 15. A penalty flag against Coleman on the next play made it 1st and 20 on the Cat's own 8 yard line. Edington then gained 5 making it 2nd and 15. Salazar carried the ball for a 6 yard gain giving the Cats 3rd and 9. Buzzard was then sacked on the 6 yard line forcing Coleman to punt the ball on 4th down.

Bangs began their next drive on their own 47 yard line. Their first play gave them another 1st down with 3:05 left in the half at the Coleman 33 yard line. An 8 yard gain put them on the 24 yard line. 3 more yards on the next play gave them another 1st down. The QB was brought down after a gain of 3 yards. The ball then was carried to the 9 yard line for another 1st down. Bangs was run out of bounds at the 6 yard line then the QB was taken down for a 1 yard loss. On 3rd and goal from the 7 and 0:56 left in the half, Kemp intercepted the ball in the end zone on the next play and ran out to the 2 yard line. With 0:40 left and on 2nd down, Buzzard kept the ball to get to the 3 yard line with the clock running. Allowing time to run out, Coleman went into halftime with the
score Bangs 3 - Coleman 0.

3rd Quarter
Bangs received the kickoff and got to the 33 yard line. A 4 yard gain gave them 2nd and 6 on the 37 yard line. They then gained enough for a 1st down to midfield. After no gain on the first play, Bangs had 2nd and 10. A QB keeper gained about 5 yards for 3rd and 5. Then the QB completed a pass and Bangs got to Coleman's 21 yard line. The next run was stopped by the Cats defense, then "holding" called against the Dragons gave them 1st and 20. Edington and Cole stopped the Bangs runner after only a 2 yard gain. On 2nd and 18 an incomplete pass made it 3rd and 18. The QB kept the ball for gain of 12 yards which gave them 4th down and 6. With 7:27 on the clock an incomplete pass turned the ball over to Coleman on downs.

Stanley Cole carried for a gain of 2, then Kahlam Salazar
(Pictured left courtesy of Gary Strickland of StricksPics) gained 5 yards which gave Coleman 3rd down with 3 to go for a first down. Zach Doyle then got tackled in the backfield for a 3 yard loss and the Cats were forced to punt on 4th down.

Bangs took over after the punt on the Coleman 46 yard line. Edington stopped the runner after a 6 yard gain. On 2nd down, they gained enough for another 1st down and got to the 35 yard line. The QB was chased in the backfield and lost 11 yards which gave Bangs 2nd and 21. On the next play a flag was thrown (holding) against Bangs, but Coleman declined the penalty giving Bangs 3rd and 21. On the next play the QB had to throw the ball away which gave Bangs 4th and 21 on Coleman's 46 yard line.

A bad snap on the punt sent the ball over the punters head. Coleman tackled the punter on Bangs' 26 yard line, taking possession of the ball. An incomplete pass to Dalton DeLeon, and a gain of 1 yard by Edington made it 3rd and 9. Then, a pass from Buzzard was intercepted by Bangs and they took over possession on the 18 yard line.

Andrew Isom stopped the Bangs back after a 5 yard gain. Isom again stopped Bangs making it 3rd and 1 on their own 27 yard line. No gain made it 4th and 1 and Bangs punted. However, the punt was blocked and Coleman covered the punter and took possession on the 19 yard line with 0:28 left in the 3rd quarter. Salazar carried for 1 yard and the quarter ended with the score Bangs 3 - Coleman 0.

4th Quarter
The Cats had possession of the ball on the Bangs 18 yard line. No gain on the first play from scrimmage for the 3rd quarter made it 3rd and 9. An incomplete pass to Jamal Agbor made it 4th and 9 on the 18 yard line. Buzzard's next pass was also incomplete turning the ball over on downs to the Bangs Dragons with 11:10 left in the game.

A QB keeper gave Bangs 4 yards for a 2nd and 6. Then a carry to the 32 yard line gave them a 1st down. The QB then got sacked behind the line of scrimmage back to the 20 yard line which gave them 2nd and 22 to go for a first down. Bangs then gained enough on the next 2 plays to have 4th and 7 on their own 35 yard line. Somehow Bangs was able to run through the Cat's defense to get to the 43 yard line for a 1st down. A 1 yard gain and an incomplete pass made it 3rd and 9. Edington was able to stop the runner on the next play, but not before he made a first down on the 31 yard line. A penalty against Bangs for a block in the back made it 1st and 17 from the 39 yard line. A QB keeper had a gain of 6 yards for 2nd and 11. On the next play from scrimmage, after handing off, the quarterback then received a "pitch back" and ran for a 6 yard gain. On 3rd down the Dragons' got through again for another 1st down, and Dalton DeLeon was able to trip him up on the 7 yard line. Bangs had 1st and goal from the 7 with 6:49 left in the game.

Bangs then fumbled on the goal line and Coleman recovered it to get possession of the ball on the 2 yard line with 6:25 left in the game. A Buzzard keeper made less than a yard, then a quick pass to DeLeon out left was open and DeLeon got a 1st down to the 19 yard line. Salazar carried for 2 yards, then on the next play a long pass to DeLeon took him down to Bangs' 41 yard line for a 1st down with 5:00 left in the game. A penalty against Bangs was declined on that play. Doyle with the carry on the next play had a gain of 5. On 2nd down Buzzard's pass was incomplete out of bounds making it 3rd and 5. Offsides against the Cats made it 3rd and 10. The pass to DeLeon was incomplete but defensive
holding was called with 3:56 left in the game. With the 15 yard penalty, Coleman had the ball on the 26 yard line. Buzzard was able to get to the 19 yard line. On 2nd down with 3:26 Salazar then carried for a 1st down to the 13 yard line. A pass to Salazar gained 4 yards, giving the Cats 2nd down on the 9 yard line. Salazar then ran for a 1st down on the 2 yard line with 2:24 left in the game. Stanley Cole then carried the ball into the end zone for the Cat's only touchdown of the night. Buzzard's PAT was good making the score Coleman 7 - Bangs 3 with 2:01 left in the game.
(Cole's touchdown is pictured above courtesy of Gary Strickland of StricksPics.)

With the ensuing kickoff, Bangs got the ball on their own 34 yard line. With 1:58 the QB passed out of bounds, which made it 2nd and 10 from the 34 yard line and 1:53 on the clock. The next carry was taken out of bounds at the 50 for a 1st down and stopped the clock at 1:45. Then another 1st down to the 40 stopped the clock for movement of the chains. A pass was completed but a penalty stopped the clock again. "Holding" against Bangs took them back 10 yards back to the 50 yard line. They had 1st and 20. On the next play Bangs ran out of bounds just short of 1st down and stopped the clock at 1:16 . On 2nd down, the Dragons got a 1st down to the Coleman 20 yard line. With the clock running at 1:09 the QB threw an incomplete pass. The clock stopped with 0:59.
On 2nd down, the Dragons got through the Cat's defense with 0:50 left on the clock and scored their only touchdown of the night. They went for the win with a 2-point conversion, but failed. The score was Bangs 9 - Coleman 7.

Bangs' kick was long and DeLeon was stopped at 25 yard line. 0:46 was left on clock. A 9 yard pass to DeLeon took him out of bounds and the clock stopped with 0:40. An incomplete pass stopped the clock again. With 0:25 seconds Coleman got the ball on their own 49 yard line after a penalty against Bangs. Buzzard's incomplete pass out of bounds stopped the clock with 0:16 left. Buzzard ran out of bounds to stop the clock with 0:08 left, giving the Cats 3rd and 2 yards to go on the 43 yard line. A flag was thrown against Bangs as time ran out and Coleman was moved to the 27 yard line. The Cats were able to run one more play because a game cannot end on a Defensive Penalty. So, with no time left on the clock, Coleman called a time out and came out to attempt a field goal. Buzzard's miss left the score
Bangs 9 - Coleman 7, giving Coleman their first loss of the season.

Coleman will play Brady next week at Hufford Field. The district standings can be found at: http://www.terryssportspage.com/9fball.html#8

Novice stomps Brookesmith
9/26/2009
The Novice Hornets came out ready to play and jumped to a quick 24-0 with three Josh Arispe Touchdowns. But, with 4 costly fumbles, Novice allowed Brookesmith back in the game by scoring 3 quick touchdowns to tie the game 24-24. A Big pass play from Josh Arispe to Jarred Briley (50 yd TD) with 12 seconds left in the half gave the Hornets the lead of 37-30 going into halftime. Establishing the run, the Hornets drained the clock and no one scored in the 3rd quarter. The fourth quarter was dominated by big plays from Scottie Pringle (onside kick return TD), Jarred Briley (60yd INT return TD), and Josh Arispe (78yd pass to Briley for TD). The Hornets did yet another great job of showing good sportsmanship and never giving up.
Next Friday, the Hornets will travel cross-county to face the well coached and very talented #9 Panther Creek Panthers. Anyone planning on supporting our counties’ football teams need to please bring a canned good or non-perishable item to the football game for our County-Wide Food Drive. Your donations and support would be greatly appreciated!

Novice Hornets Fight to the End Last Friday Night
9/24/2009      (Contributed)
The Sidney Eagles ranked #4 in the state came into Novice expecting the same outcome as their previous game: 45 their opponent by halftime and going home early.   After the first quarter, the Eagles knew they were in for a game with the score 20-14. Key turnovers and costly penalties put the Hornets down 44-21 at halftime. Instead of giving up and giving in, the Hornets came out with a touchdown to open the third quarter to put the score within 16 points. A dropped pass in the end zone would have made the score 44-36. The Hornets were forced to go for it on the fourth down in the fourth quarter and it turned into two quick touchdowns for the Eagles putting the game out of reach. With the second teamers in on both sides with 2 minutes left in the game, Sidney put an end to it with a 4 yard run. When the final horn rang, the Novice Hornets had gained the respect of Sidney players, coaches, and their fans by never giving up and showing sportsmanship throughout the game. Coach Cameron Norris had these words to say, “The final score doesn’t show the true outcome of the game. My players grew as a team in character and perseverance. They believe in themselves and in each other. They believe that they can play with anybody!”

Bluecats Make Good Showing, Come Up Short
9/19/2009 by Randy Turner
Coleman had more rushing, more passing and more total yards, but Colorado City had more points to claim a non-district victory Friday night, 16 to 6, over the Bluecats.

The Bluecats are now 0-4 on the season and suddenly, non-district is over. This coming Friday, the slate is wiped clean and district begins on the home field against the Comanche Indians at 7:30pm.  Comanche is undefeated with decisive victories against Hamilton, Eastland, Merkel and Grape Creek.

Whether or not the Bluecats will have their starting quarterback was a big question after the game Friday night. Zach Doyle spent much of the 4th quarter with shoulder pads off and ice on his shoulder, a shoulder dinged during a tackle. Doyle later returned to the game, but seemed to aggravate the situation when he threw a long pass. Sophomore Logan Owens filled-in admirably the rest of the game.

1st Quarter
It was a packed house in Colorado City on the home side as the school celebrated its homecoming. The Coleman contingent was small, by comparison, but a nice size crowd still made the two hour drive to support the blue and white.

C-City took the opening kickoff but failed to convert a fourth down play and gave the ball to Coleman on downs.

The Bluecats wasted no time in putting together a nice opening drive which ended in a
2 yard scoring run by QB Zach Doyle with 6:17 on the clock. The point after failed when the holder mishandled the ball, but Coleman had an early 6-0 advantage over the heavily favored Wolves.

The Wolf Pack's got their first TD on the next drive with
4:02 left in the opening quarter, a big 40 yard scoring strike from QB Derek Gainey to RB Tracy Russell. Gainey and Russell would work together well all night. Eli Farrell kicked the extra point to give C-City a 7-6 lead. On this particular drive, the Bluecats thought they had recovered a fumble, not once, but twice. Each time, the runners were ruled down prior to the fumble.

2nd Quarter
After the Bluecats sputtered and punted on their next series, the Wolves were hitting on all cylinders to begin the second quarter. QB Gainey, who may weigh 140 pounds soaking wet, tossed
a 25 yard touchdown pass to Nick Reyna in the first minute of the quarter. Farrell missed the extra point wide left, making the score 13 to 6.

Coleman's next series ended with a punt, even though the Cats moved the ball some.

On the next C-City possession, they moved to the Bluecat 8 yard line and passed to the end zone where Bluecat Trent Hambright made an athletic leaping interception of the intended receiver in the back of the end zone, giving Coleman the ball back at their own 20.

Unable to move the ball, Adam Jimenez punted the ball back to the Wolves and, on the next C-City series, Jimenez managed a quarterback sack just before half. Jimenez was everywhere Friday night, offense, defense and special teams.
The score at halftime was Colorado City 13, Coleman 6.

3rd Quarter
The Bluecats took the second half kickoff with Travis Brixey returning the ball to the 16 yard line. Unfortunately, the Bluecats could muster no offense and punted after only three plays to the Wolves' 39.

Immediately, C-City fumbled, the ball recovered by Bluecat sophomore lineman Wayne Worsham.

Inspired by the turn of events, the Cats were determined and moved from the C-City 45 to the 14 before a fumbled pitch on a run around the end was recovered by Colorado City's Jessie Guerra. On this particular drive, the Bluecats were able to run at will over the right side of their offensive line where good blocks were thrown from Matthew Guerrero, Marcelino Felipe and Gary Heath.

Even with the turnover, the Bluecat defense was very vocal on the field and the sideline players had a can-do attitude too. Jimenez sacked QB Gainey but an off-sides call on the Bluecats overshadowed that play. Worsham then sacked Gainey, forcing a C-City punt. Feeding off a great Bluecat defensive stand, punt returner Travis Brixey returned the kick with reckless abandon down the Coleman sideline, giving the Bluecats good field position at their own 41 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.  His effort seemed to inspire the rest of the team.

4th Quarter
Marching into C-City territory, QB Doyle spiraled a nicely thrown ball to WR Hambright, taking the Bluecats from the 44 to the 24 of C-City. It was on that play, however, that Doyle injured his throwing shoulder and was done for the night.

With Logan Owens taking over as Bluecat QB, the Cats fought through some penalties and Owens completed a pass to Brixey, but on a 3rd and 14 situation, C-City's Andrew Munoz read pass and intercepted the new Bluecat QB with 8:45 left in the game.

Two minutes later, the Wolves would score what turned out to be the last points of the game,
a 24 yard field goal by Farrell with 6:23 left. The score was 16-6.

The ensuring kickoff went out of bounds, giving Coleman the leather at their own 32. With little offense, Jimenez was called in to punt. The Wolves returned the ball to their 34.

With 4:00 minutes left, C-City ran one play, but the play clock never started. The play was a short run, yet after the officials gathered to discuss how much time to take off for the single play, Bluecat fans and coaches alike were stunned when 25 seconds was taken off the clock. One short running play, 25 seconds off the clock. You make the call.

The series ended in a punt to Coleman's Travis Brixey who returned the ball to the Bluecat 34. With 2:00 minutes left, Owens completed a short pass to Hambright and another 29 yarder to Andrew Isom. Isom, by the way, ran hard and was a key strong point for the Cats, all night. With the goal line in sight, a Bluecat pass into the end zone was intercepted by the Wolves. They simply ran out the clock and won their homecoming game 16-6.

Bluecats Downed by the Bearcats
9/15/2009
Coleman's Friday night game began in the rain...and it continued all night.  The Cats scored first early in the 1st quarter when the Bluecats' Jonathan Sanchez stripped the ball from a Hawley player and scored a touchdown. PAT was no good, so the score was Coleman 6 - Hawley 0.

Before the end of the first quarter, Daniel Vasquez intercepted a pass and Coleman got the ball on the 50 yard line. They were unable to capitalize on the turnover, however. With 4:25 left in the 2nd quarter, Hawley scored and their PAT was good. The score was Coleman 6 - Hawley 7, which was maintained until halftime.

In the 3rd quarter, Hawley was able to score again bringing the score to Hawley 15 - Coleman 6. This score remained until about 5 minutes left in the game. Andrew Isom scored from the six yardline and the two-point conversion from Doyle to Brixey made the score Hawley 15 - Coleman 14. Neither Coleman nor Hawley were able to put any more points on the board for the rest of the game, and Coleman ended with their third loss of the season.

Comanche Topped Jr High Teams
9/29/2008      (contributed)
Coleman 7th grade Football
Coleman 7th grade lost to the Comanche Warriors by the score of 18 to 0. The 7th graders will be open next week, and resume the following week with a contest against the Dublin Lions. Game time will be at 5:00, on Thursday October 9, here at Hufford Field.

Coleman 8th Grade Football
Coleman’s 8th grade lost a heart breaker to the Comanche Warriors. The Final score was Comanche 10 and Coleman 8. Coleman started the game with a 67 yard touch down drive. The drive was capped off by a 12 yard run by Coleman Fullback DJ Terrell. The 2 point conversion was made by Quarterback Anthony Thomas throwing a strike to J-Back Mason Fuller. The score remained Coleman 8 Comanche 0 until late in the 4th quarter. Coleman’s defense was outstanding up to this point. Coleman took a safety with about 4 minutes to go in the contest. The score was Coleman 8 Comanche 2 at this point in the game. Kicking off from the 20 yard line after the safety gave Comanche good field position. Comanche finally scored a TD and their 2 point conversion was good. Score Comanche 10 Coleman 8. With less than a minute to go Coleman ran its 2 minute offense and was able to get the ball to the Comanche 8 yard line, the big play in the final drive was a 36 yard pass from Anthony Thomas to Flanker Keith Dillard. With the ball on the 8 yard line and 33 seconds to go in the game, the snap from center was mishandled and recovered by a Comanche Warrior.  Coleman’s defense played an outstanding game and have shown great improvement over previous games.

Coleman’s next Jr High games will be at home on Thursday October 9, against the Dublin Lions.

TD on 2nd Play Sets the Tone for the Bluecats
9/28/2008
Coleman was able to begin District play with a win, a BIG win, over the Comanche Indians Friday night.  This Friday the Cats are "Open" then, Dublin comes to town for the second District game on October 10th.
1st QUARTER
Glen Edington took the opening kickoff and got to the 22 yard line. Stanley Cole gained 5 yards on the first play from scrimmage, then Colton Buzzard (pictured right) carried the ball 73 yards into the end-zone on the next play. With the Buzzard PAT good, the
score was 7 - 0, Coleman ahead with 11:14 left in the 1st quarter. And, the night was still young!

Comanche started their first possession on their own 16 yard line. Stanley Cole held the running back to a 1-yard gain. Cole (pictured below) was also in on the next tackle, allowing a gain of only 3 yards by the Comanche QB. On 3rd down, Cole and Caleb Walker held the running back to no gain, so on 4th and 4, Comanche was forced to punt the ball. Edington returned it to Comanche's 47 yard line.

Salazar carried the ball to the 16 yard line on the first play of this series. Comanche's defense held Glen Edington to a 1-yard loss total on the next two plays, then a Buzzard pass to Dalton DeLeon carried him out of endzone, so it was incomplete. On 4th and 11 from the 17 yard line, Colton Buzzard's field goal attempt was wide right, so with 7:02 left in the 1st quarter, the score remained Coleman 7 - Comanche 0.

Comanche's QB kept the ball on their first play of this possession for a 1-yard gain, then passed for a 1st down on the next play, getting the Indians to the 31 yard line. Comanche had a gain of 2 before calling a time out.   A pass for another 1st down put the Indians on the Coleman 45 yard line. A run for 1-yard gain was stopped by Cole and Adam Jimenez.  Jamal Agbor then stopped the next play behind the line of scrimmage, so with Comanche's next pass incomplete, and 3:48 left in the 1st quarter, the Indians punted again.

Dalton DeLeon returned the ball to the 42 yard line, but a penalty against the Bluecats took them back to the 14 yard line. On 1st down, Edington got the ball out of bounds with a gain of 2 yards. Next play, Buzzard kept the ball for a 1st down to the 28 yard line. Then, a pass to DeLeon got another 1st down on the 41 yard line. Travis Brixey caught a Buzzard pass for another 1st down to Comanche's 45 yard line. Zach Doyle carried for another 1st down to the 32 yard line. Stanley Cole slipped on the turf at the 24 yard line, then with 1:42 left in 1st quarter, he carried the ball into the endzone for the Bluecat's second touchdown of the night. The PAT was good,
so the score was Coleman 14 - Comanche 0.

An onside kick by Coleman was covered by Comanche on their own 36 yard line. A 1-yard gain on the first play, then Gary Heath stopped the back for a loss of one yard. A pass was completed for a 1st down on their own 47 yard line. That play ended the 1st quarter with the score
Coleman 14 - Comanche 0.

2nd QUARTER
Comanche's QB gained 3 yards on the first play of this quarter, then the ball was carried down to Coleman's 5 yard line for an Indian 1st down. A QB keeper got the Indians to the 2 yard line. Then, on 2nd and goal, Comanche scored their first touchdown with 10:03 left in the 2nd quarter. The PAT was no good, so the score was
Coleman 14 - Comanche 6.

The onside kick by Comanche was covered by Anthony Beltran and Coleman started their next series on their own 37 yard line. Buzzard kept the ball and got close to a 1st down on the Cat's 46 1/2 yard line. Glen Edington then carried it to Comanche's 47 for a 1st down. Buzzard passed to Edington to the 34 yard line for another 1st down. A quick pass to Deleon was complete and then out of bounds for another 1st at the 21 yard line. Colton Buzzard then kept the ball and seeing daylight, ran into the endzone for his second rushing touchdown of the night. With the PAT by Buzzard blocked the score was
Coleman 20 - Comanche 6 with 9:01 left in 2nd quarter.

Comanche took the ensuing kickoff to their own 43 yard line. Their second play was a completed pass to Coleman's 20 yard line for a 1st down. On 3rd and 4 they had another completed pass for a 1st down to the 4 yard line. With 1st and goal, Stanley Cole got through their line and stopped them for a 1-yard loss. They had no gain on 2nd down, and a 3rd down pass into the endzone was incomplete. On 4th and goal from the 5 yard line, the
Bluecat defense held the QB out of the endzone, just 6 inches short of a touchdown, so Coleman took over the ball on downs.

With the ball less than a yard out of the endzone, QB Buzzard kept the ball for a 5 yard gain. Then, his pass to Dalton DeLeon was intercepted by Comanche and run back to the Coleman 43 yard line for their next possession. A completed pass gave Comanche a 1st down on the Cats' 22 yard line. Andrew Isom and Adam Jimenez stopped the Indians for a 1-yard loss, so Comanche had 2nd and 11 with 3:55 left in half. A pass was complete just short of a 1st down, and then Cole stopped them for a 1-yard loss. On 4th and 2 from the 13 yard line, a fumbled snap kept Comanche from making any yardage.
Coleman again took over the ball on downs inside their own 20. With 1st down on the 16 yard line and 2:14 left in 2nd quarter, the Cats got to the 22 yard line. Then a Buzzard pass to DeLeon was complete to the 35 for another 1st down. Travis Brixey then received Buzzard's throw and got to the 45 yard line just shy of a 1st down. A pass to Glen Edington just out of his reach fell incomplete, and the Cats were sitting at 3rd down with about a foot to go for a 1st. Colton carried the ball to the 50 yard line for that 1st down with 1:01 left in the half. A quick pass out to DeLeon was complete and he was tackled after a 7 yard gain; however a penalty against Coleman took them back 15 yards. With 1st and 25, Buzzard scrambled and got to the 48 yard line making it 2nd and 12 with 0:41 on the clock. A pass to Dalton DeLeon was complete and he ran out of bounds at the 1st down marker, for 3rd and about 1 foot on Comanche's 40 yard line. Kahlam Salazar carried the ball and gained enough for a 1st down. Buzzard then kept for the ball and gained a 1st down to the 22 yard line. With a "2-minute offense" in gear, Edington got the call and gained 5 yards to the 17 yard line. Buzzard passed to DeLeon and he was able to get out of bounds at the 6 yard line to stop the clock with 6 seconds left in the half. Comanche's timeout didn't keep the Cats from scoring, though. Buzzard completed a pass to DeLeon for another touchdown with 2 seconds to spare. The Bluecats went for 2 and another pass to DeLeon was complete for 2 points giving the Bluecats a 28 - 6 lead going into halftime.

3rd QUARTER
Comanche received the kickoff and was able to return to the 40 yard line, where Daniel Vasquez made the tackle. Running the option, the Comanche QB pitchout took the back out of bounds for a short gain, 2nd and 6 from the 44 yard line. Stanley Cole stopped the next runner for a 1-yard gain. On an incomplete pass, a defensive interference call moved the ball to Coleman's 43 yard line for a 1st down. Agbor and Jonathon Sanchez stopped the Indians behind the line of scrimmage for a 1-yard loss. A completed pass got the Indians to Coleman's 28 yard line and a 1st down. A run on their next play was taken down for only a 1-yard gain. The Comanche QB was pushed out of bounds at the 19 yard line. Comanche got a 1st down, then Edington tackled Comanche at the 12 yard line. Their next play gave them a 1st down at Coleman's 5 yard line. Then, the Indians were able to get just short of the goal line, giving them 2nd and goal about a foot out. On next play they lost another foot, so they had 3rd and about 2 feet to go for a TD. Stopped again by the Cat defense gave them 4th down. Comanche tried one more time, but the
Bluecat Defense stopped the Indians just short of the endzone with 5:33 left in the 3rd quarter.

Coleman took over the ball inside the 1 yard line for the 2nd time that night, and after a 2 yard run, Colton Buzzard passed to Dalton DeLeon near the 30 yard line. DeLeon caught the ball beyond the defenders and ran into the endzone for a touchdown - a 98 yard touchdown pass!
With the PAT good, the score was Coleman 35 - Comanche 6 with 4:48 left in the 3rd quarter.

Coleman's euphoria was quickly squelched when
Comanche ran the ensuing kickoff 84 yards back for a touchdown. With their PAT not good, the score was Coleman 35 - Comanche 12 with 4:33 left in the 3rd quarter.

Coleman started this possession on their own 28 yard line. Kahlam Salazar ran for 6 yards, then Doyle got a 1st down to the 43 yard line. Buzzard passed to DeLeon and he was taken down at the Comanche 49. On an option Buzzard pitched to Doyle who ran for a 1st down to the 35 yard line. Then Doyle ran for a short gain to the 31. On 3rd down, Salazar (pictured right) carried the ball to the 20 yard line for 1st down. An offsides penalty against Comanche gave Coleman 5 yards for 1st and 5 from the 15 yard line. A reverse to DeLeon made for a 1-yard loss. The Cats let the clock run out ending the 3rd Quarter at Coleman 35 - Comanche 12.

4th QUARTER
On the first play of the 4th quarter Buzzard passed to Salazar wide open in the endzone for a touchdown.
The PAT was not good so the score was Coleman 41 - Comanche 12 with 11:53 in the 4th quarter.

Comanche returned the kickoff to the 33 yard line. An incomplete pass and a 2-yard gain gave them 3rd and 8. Another incomplete pass made it 4th and 8, so Comanche was forced to punt. The ball was returned by Buzzard to the 38 yard line, a penalty for "holding" moved the ball back to the 26 yard line. Salazar carried the ball on 1st down for a 4-yard gain. Jonathon Sanchez
(pictured left) then received the handoff and got to the 41 yard line for another 1st down. Sanchez again received the handoff and ran for 7 yards, then again ran for a 1st down to the 26 yard line. Doyle carried the ball to the 11 yard line for another 1st down, then ran again for a gain of 3 yards. With 2nd and 7 from the 8, a pass to Trent Hambright put the Cats on the 6 yard line. On 3rd down Jonathon Sanchez carried the ball into the endzone with 6:50 left in the game. With the PAT by Buzzard good, the score was Coleman 48 - Comanche 12.

Comanche started their next short-lived possession on their own 45 yard line. A fumble on their next play was recovered by Stanley Cole who picked it up and ran to the Comanche 34 yard line. Sanchez then received the handoff from Zach Doyle, quarterback, and escaped several near-tackles to get to the 1 yard line. After a Comanche timeout, with 1st and goal from the 1, Doyle kept the ball and ran for a touchdown. With the PAT by Buzzard good,
the score was Coleman 55 - Comanch 12 with 6:00 left in the game.

Comanche started this drive on their own 39 yard line. The Indians had an incomplete pass, then K.C. Hale tackled Comanche on Coleman's 45 yard line, but not before the got a 1st down. Their next run was for another 1st down to the 33 yard line. An incomplete pass, then an 8 yard run made it 3rd and 2. A pass was completed to the 5 yard line, then on their 2nd down play, Comanche was able to score a touchdown.
With the PAT good, the score was Coleman 55 - Comanche 19 with 3:53 left in the game.

Coleman returned the kick to the 38 yard line. Sanchez carried the ball to the 46, then Britt Bartell got a 1st down on the Comanche 45 yard line. An illegal procedure call against the Bluecats made it 1st and 15. Doyle kept the ball for a 2-yard gain. Doyle then kept it again, but fumbled giving Comanche possession on the 38 yard line. However, on their first play, Edington intercepted a pass and gave Coleman the ball back on the 32 yard line. Jonathon Sanchez ran 12 yards to the 20 for a 1st down. Sanchez then gained 16 more yards to the 4 yard line with 1:31 in the game. A QB keeper by Doyle made 1 yard, then illegal procedure took the Cats back to the 8 yard line.
Doyle (pictured right) then ran the ball into the endzone for his second rushing TD of the night. With 0:24 seconds on the clock, the PAT was good so the score was Coleman 62 - Comanche 19.  Comanche allowed the clock to run down on their next possession leaving the score  Coleman 62 - Comanche 19.    WAY TO GO BLUECATS !!!

Bluecats Send Wolves Back to Their Den
9/21/2008
The home side of Hufford Field was filled to capacity Friday night for the 2008 homecoming game against the Colorado City Wolves. In what was a very physical ballgame, the good guys prevailed by a final of 28-19 to stay undefeated at 4-0. It was the final non-district game.

1st Quarter
The Bluecats took the opening kickoff. Dalton DeLeon returned the ball to the 32. The Cats moved the ball downfield against a large Colorado City front and, four minutes later, scored the first touchdown of the game, a 3 yard run by Stan Cole with 7:48 to go in the quarter. Colton Buzzard kicked the point after to make the score 7-0.

Kicker Carlos Barrios gave the Wolves the old "onside kick" which was recovered by Bluecat Andrew Isom. Add to that a 15 yard penalty on the Wolves and the Bluecats found themselves at the C-City 14.

Cole rumbled to the three which set up the next score, a three yard run by Glen Edington with 5:58 in the quarter.  Buzzard added the extra point to give Coleman an early 14-0 lead before the Wolves had even run an offensive play.

Barrios kicked was returned by J C Johnson of C-City. Tack on a face mask penalty against the Bluecats and the Wolves were suddenly at the Coleman 33.

But one thing the Bluecats like to do, and do very well, is play defense. It came down to the Wolves howling on 4th down and 2 at the Bluecat three. They got one, but not two, and the ball went over on downs.

Starting at their own 2 yard line, the Bluecats moved a few yards when a Colton Buzzard pass was intercepted by C-City's Richard Luera at the Coleman 11.

Pinned against the wall, the defense couldn't hold back C-City this time. The Bluecat turnover resulted in the Wolves scoring on an 11 yard pass from Clint White to Manuel Garza with 45 seconds remaining in the 1st quarter. The point after kick was short resulting in a 14-6 Bluecat lead.

The kickoff was a ground roller and was recovered by Zach Doyle at the Bluecat 30. A fumbled exchange between center Duston Crawford and QB Buzzard was recovered by Buzzard. But, in the process, the Bluecats lost their starting center for the rest of the game. Crawford sustained a knee injury and will be evaluated this week. Ross Jackson replaced Crawford in the lineup.

2nd Quarter
More determined than ever, Edington made a nice run to the C-City 44. Buzzard ran to the 22. Cole carried it to the 6. A couple plays later, Edington scored on another 3 yard run with 6:52 left in the 2nd quarter. Buzzard's extra point kick was good to make the score 21-6.

Following the kick, the Wolves started at their own 35. Following some incomplete passes, they punted to the Bluecat 27.

After a 15 yard personal foul on the Wolves for roughing the passer, the Bluecats moved to their own 40. Tempers were beginning to flare. Both teams were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Bluecats punted.

From their own 40 yard line, the Wolves went to the air as White connected with Garza to get to the Bluecat 34.  Then, with three Bluecat defenders covering receiver J C Johnson, he somehow caught a 34 yard pass from White and ran into the south end zone to score with 1:34 before the half. The C-City two point pass was incomplete to make the score Bluecats 21, Wolves 12.

Dalton DeLeon returned the kickoff to the Bluecat 28. Zach Doyle had a couple nice runs to midfield but time expired at the half.

Half
Five senior girls from CHS were escorted by their dads to the center of Hufford Field where Nancy Cruz was selected as Homecoming Queen 2008. After a fine performance by the Bluecat band, the teams returned to the field. "We can't afford any more injuries," said Coach Rusty Buzzard. Not only had Crawford left the game with a knee injury, but Glen Edington, while playing defense and making a tackle, reinjured a knee which kept him out of two previous games. Crawford and Edington will be evaluated this week.

3rd Quarter
The Bluecats kicked to the Wolves who returned the ball to the 33. A pass from White was intercepted by Bluecat Kyle Kemp giving Coleman the ball at the C-City 36.

Buzzard passed to Travis Brixey who rumbled to the 9. Doyle ran the ball to the 4. Buzzard was sacked for a loss back to the 7. The Bluecats ended up trying a 26 yard field goal which Buzzard missed.

The Wolves couldn't get their offense in gear and punted, a boomer that went from the C-City 12 to the Coleman 18. A holding penalty on the Bluecats moved the ball back to the 8. After a time-out by the Wolves, Zach Doyle made a big run of 52 yards. But, moments later, a Colton Buzzard pass was intercepted by C-City at the 14 yard line.

Still unable to get their offense unraveled, the Wolves punted. Edgar Barrios got the ball and returned it to midfield.

4th Quarter
After a scoreless 3rd quarter, the final 12 minutes began with a Colton Buzzard punt from the Coleman 45 to the C-City 13. Behind 21-12, the Wolves made it to midfield but failed to convert a 4th and 2 play thanks to Bluecat linebacker Stan Cole who made a tackle behind the line of scrimmage, turning the ball over on downs.

The Bluecat offense failed to produce, resulting in another Buzzard punt to the C-City 21.

On the move, the Wolves racked up big yardage when White found Garza for a 45 yard completion. But, moments later, Coleman's Zach Doyle stepped in front of a White pass and returned the interception to the Coleman 38.

With 3:11 left in the game, Buzzard threw his third interception of the night, taken by C-City's Matt Sowa. That set up a C-City touchdown, a 28 yard slant pass to Garza with 2:54 remaining in the game. The PAT was true, making the score Coleman 21, C-City 19.

Working with no timeouts, the Wolves kicked to the Bluecats, an onside kick handled skillfully by Trent Hambright who wasted no time in scampering downfield to the C-City 29 yard line. Hambright's return set up the final Bluecat score of the game. It was a weird play to watch as no one touched Zach Doyle as he ran 29 yards for the touchdown. Not only was he untouched, the Wolves looked as if they didn't even attempt to stop him. Ah, but were the Wolves up to strategy? If they could block the extra point, score and get two points, they could tie the game. But they didn't block the extra point by Buzzard, the score was 28-19 and the chance for winning began to dim for C-City.

After two Barrios kickoffs out of bounds and an illegal procedure penalty, the Wolves took their final possession at their own 35. With 2:06 left in the game, they had moved to Coleman's 46. A pass to Garza on 3rd and long gave them another first down at the Coleman 31. With 1:06, the Wolves went for the score but a pass to Garza was incomplete in the end zone. Back to pass again, White was hit by Bluecat Adam Jimenez who jarred the ball loose. Carolos Barrios, big senior lineman, had his moment of glory as he scooped up the ball and rumbled his way to the C-City 35.

After that, the Cats simply snapped the ball twice, took a knee and called it a win, 28-19, leaving a large happy homecoming crowd ready to enjoy their weekend reunions.

Afterthoughts
It was a very physical game. From field level, there were lots of hard hits, no doubt plenty of sore players with plenty of bumps and bruises. But, losing a starting lineman and running back was not good. How long Crawford and Edington may miss wasn't known over the weekend. Hopefully, for the sake of these two fine young senior leaders, they'll be back in the fray soon.

Can you believe it? Non-district is history. It all counts starting this Friday night as the Bluecats return to Comanche for the first time in a long time. The Indians lost to Grape Creek 25-14 Friday night and are 0-4 to begin district.

District 8-2A Standings
Brady and Coleman are the only undefeated teams going into the district race. Early and Bangs are both 2-2, San Saba is 1-2, Dublin and Comanche winless. Brady had a very convincing win against Ozona and scored 72 points Friday night. Early easily handled Ballinger. The next several weeks won't be easy.

Bluecats Beat the Bearcats Friday
9/14/2008
1ST QUARTER
Even though Coleman won the toss Friday night in Hawley, the Bluecats lined up to receive the first kick-off, and the onside kick ended up being covered by Hawley. That gave the Bearcats first possession of the ball on Coleman's 42 yard line. After an incomplete pass and a couple of plays for losses, Hawley came up with 4th and 13 from Coleman's 45. Their punt to Dalton DeLeon brought Coleman's first possession to a start on the 11 yard line. An incomplete pass gave the Bluecats 2nd and 10. Kahlam Salazar then carried for 7 yards, which gave Coleman 3rd and 3. Salazar again carried the ball, this time for a 1st down on the 22 yard line. Colton Buzzard kept the ball for 3 yards, and on 2nd down he gained 1 more yard, for 3rd and 6. Buzzard then attempted a pass but was intercepted by Hawley who ran it back for a touchdown.
The successful PAT gave Hawley a 7 - 0 lead with 7:35 left in the 1st quarter.

The ensuing kick-off to Dalton DeLeon ended at the 32 yard line. A "false start" call gave Coleman 1st and 15 from the 27 yard line. An incomplete pass to Travis Brixey made it 2nd and 15. Salazar was able to gain 3 yards so on 3rd and 12, Buzzard kept the ball getting to the 35 yard line. On 4th and 7 with 6:12 left in 1st quarter, Buzzard ran the ball, after setting up to punt, but did not get a first down. With 5:26 on the clock, Hawley started their next possession on the Coleman 39 yard line. An 8-yard carry gave Hawley 2nd and 2. But a 4-yard loss and a QB sack by Stanley Cole gave Hawley 4th and 11 on the 40 yard line. Their punt rolled to about 6 inches from the goal line with 3:22 left in 1st quarter.

This did not deter the Bluecats though. After a 1st down Buzzard gain of 3, on 2nd down, Dalton DeLeon caught Buzzard's pass on the 40 yard line and ran it in for a 97-yard touchdown. Jonathon Sanchez' PAT failed so the score was
Coleman 6 - Hawley 7 with 2:36 left in the 1st quarter.

The kick-off by Carlos Barrios went into the end-zone, so Hawley started this possession on their own 20 yard line. After a 2-yard gain and an incomplete pass, on 3rd and 8, Hawley passed for a 1st down on the 35 yard line. The 1st quarter ended with a 2 yard loss which gave brought them to 2nd and 12.

2ND QUARTER
To begin the 2nd quarter, Hawley received a penalty making it 2nd and 17. A completed pass gave them a 1st down on Coleman's 43 yard line. After a 3-yard loss, and an incomplete pass, a bad snap over the QB gave Hawley 4th and 22 from their own 46 yard line. Their punt rolled to Coleman's own 14 yard line.  Coleman was unable to convert this series into a 1st down and on 4th and 12 from the 12 yard line, Buzzard punted and Hawley started their possession on Coleman's 45 yard line. An illegal procedure call against Hawley gave them 1st and 15 from the 50 yard line. With 7:16 left in the 2nd quarter, Hawley had an incomplete pass, a run with no gain, and a quarterback run just short of a 1st down. On 4th and 1 on Coleman's 36 yard line and 6:19 on the clock in the half, Hawley was held by the Bluecat's defense, turning the ball over on downs to Coleman.

An illegal procedure call against Coleman gave the Cats 1st and 15, Kahlem Salazar gained 4 yards, and Doyle then carried the ball for 15 yards giving Coleman another 1st down on the 50 yard line. A pass to Travis Brixey was knocked down by Bearcat defense, but Doyle ran on 2nd down to the Bearcat 35 yard line for a 1st down. Buzzard's 12 yard pass to Dalton DeLeon  got Coleman to the 23 yard line. Buzzard's QB keeper took him out of bounds on the 13. On 2nd and 1 with 4:04 left in the 1st half, an illegal procedure call dropped Coleman back 5 yards for 2nd and 6 on the 18 yard line. Salazar ran for 4 yards and Isom carried the ball for a loss of 4. With 4th and 6 from 18 yard line, another 5-yard penalty gave Coleman 4th and 11 from the 22. Colton Buzzard threw an incomplete pass, but a flag on the play for "roughing the passer" gave Coleman an automatic first down on the 12 yard line. On 2nd and 11 from the 13 yard line, Buzzard ran the ball in for a touchdown with 1:28 left in the half. The 2 point conversion pass to Dalton DeLeon was good which gave Coleman a 14 - 7 lead over the Bearcats.

Hawley's kick-off return was stopped by Adam Jimenez on the 22 yard line. On 2nd down from the 21, the QB was sacked by Britt Bartell giving Hawley 3rd and 15 from their own 17. Hawley ran the time out on the clock, so at halftime the score was Coleman 14 - Hawley 7.

3RD QUARTER
Hawley began their first possession of the half on Coleman's 38 yard line after a "horse collar" penalty was called against Coleman on the kick-off. A 3-yard gain gave them 2nd and 7. With 3rd and 7 on the 35 yard line, a pass was completed for a 1st down to the Coleman 26 yard line. However, on 2nd down Hawley fumbled and Coleman recovered the ball. Starting on their own 26 yard line, Buzzard threw a 13 yard pass to DeLeon for 1st down. From the 39 yard line, a Buzzard pass to Trent Hambright gained 7 more yards. Then Buzzard threw a 54 yard pass to DeLeon for Coleman's 3rd touchdown of the night.
The PAT by Buzzard was good and the score was then Coleman 21 - Hawley 7 with 8:50 left in the 3rd Quarter.

Hawley received the kick-off and started on their own 37 yard line. A pass for 3 yards gave them 2nd and 7. Another pass was thrown for a 1st down to Coleman's 40 yard line. On 2nd down and 16 from the 46 yard line, the QB was sacked by Caleb Walker and Gary Heath for another 1 yard loss. However, on 3rd down and long from the 47, Hawley completed a pass for a touchdown with 6:35 in 3rd quarter.
The PAT was not good, so the score was Coleman 21 - Hawley 13 .

Zach Doyle received the kickoff and got to the 37 yard line. Salazar then ran 18 yards for a 1st down to Hawley's 45 yard line. Buzzard passed to DeLeon for a 7 yard gain; Doyle carried for no gain; then, an incomplete pass to Hambright gave Coleman 4th and 3 on the 38 yard line. Buzzard passed to DeLeon for a 1st down to Hawley's 7 yard line. Isom ran for a 2 yard gain and an incomplete pass to Kyle Kemp made it 3rd and goal from the 5 yard line. A Buzzard keeper got the Cats to the 1 yard line. Hawley was called for "offsides" and Coleman was given 1/2 distance to the goal. It was 4th down and about 1/2 yard for a touchdown. Buzzard carried but was unable to get over the goal line, so Hawley took over the ball. With an incomplete pass, they had 2nd and 10. On the next play, Hawley's QB was falling out of the endzone and pitched the ball forward; it was considered a fumble so when Leo Jameson covered the ball, the official signaled a touchdown.
The PAT was blocked, so the score was Bluecats 27 - Bearcats 13 with 2:22 left in the 3rd quarter.

Hawley received the kick-off and started their next possession on their own 41 yard line. On 2nd down they were able to get to the Coleman 23 yard line for a 1st down. A gain of 8 yards then gave them 2nd and 2 to end the 3rd quarter. Score remained Coleman 27 - Hawley 13.

4TH QUARTER
On 4th and 1, an incomplete pass immediately turned the ball over to Coleman. They began this possession with the ball on their own 14 yard line with 11:15 left in the game. A pass to DeLeon gained 4 yards. Salazar gained 1 yard and on 3rd and 5 from the 20, Colton Buzzard was dropped down on the 7 yard line. This gave Coleman 4th and 17. A "delay of game" call put the Cats back to the 4 yard line for the punt. Hawley started this possession with a 1st down on Coleman's 29 yard line with 8:56 left in the game. On 2nd down, Hawley was able to get to the 9 yard line. After 2 plays and gaining a total of 4 yard, defensive interference was called against Coleman. With 1/2 the distance to the goal, Hawley received an automatic 1st down on the 3 yard line. Hawley passed for a touchdown with 5:38 left in the game.
Their PAT attempt failed, so the score was Coleman 27 - Hawley 19.

On the kick-off, Coleman called a fair catch at the 25 yard line. Salazar ran 21 yards for a 1st down on Coleman's 46 yard line. DeLeon caught a Buzzard pass for 9 yards, and Salazar ran for 10 yards to get another 1st down. With the ball on the Hawley 35 yard line, Doyle ran 20 yards for a 1st down on the 15 yard line. Doyle gained 1 more yard, and on 2nd and 9 Buzzard kept the ball for no gain. An incomplete pass to DeLeon gave the Cats 4th and 10 with 3:22 in game. Buzzard then threw up a pass to Doyle in end-zone for a touchdown.
The 2-point conversion failed, and the score became Coleman 33 - Hawley 19 with 3:13 left in game.

Hawley received the kick-off, and was stopped on their own 41 yard line. A completed pass on 2nd down gave Hawley 1st down on Coleman's 47 yard line. Hawley then had a 5-yard penalty, two incomplete passes with Kyle Kemp defending both, giving them 3rd and 15. Two more penalties gave them 3rd and 25 from their own 38 yard line. They passed to the 50 yard line.  A defensive holding call and a 10-yard penalty against Coleman, and suddenly Hawley was 3rd and 5 yards to go for a 1st down. But the Bluecat's defense came through and two more incomplete passes turned the ball over on downs to Coleman on their own 41 yard line with 2:00 left in the game. Doyle ran for 21 yards and Coleman was able to run the clock out making the
final score Coleman 33 - Hawley 19.

CYFL Reports Beginning of Season
9/11/2008 (contributed)
Recent rains have helped to “green up” the Coleman Youth Football League (CYFL) field on South Commercial, behind the Armory. After a hot, dry summer spent leveling off the field, re-seeding, fertilizing, and watering, watering, watering, the field is in great shape for the upcoming season for our young Bluecats. As always, CYFL wants to thank everyone who played a part in this endeavor – from picking up rocks, to moving watering lines, to working on the scoreboard. A special thanks to Barker Construction for donating labor and equipment and Danny Armstrong for the use of his aerator. The only thing left to do is mark the field which will be done within the next couple of weeks with the help of Needham Surveyors – and of course, more volunteers!

The CYFL season began this past Saturday in Merkel and the first home games are scheduled for Saturday, September 20th. There are four divisions this year – Flag Division (4-6 year olds), Mighty Might Division (2nd & 3rd grade), Junior Pee Wee (4th & 5th grade) and Pee Wee (6th grade). However, due to numbers, the Coleman Bluecat Junior Pee Wee Team is made up entirely of 4th graders and the Pee Wee Team is 5th and 6th graders. This means that some of our boys will be “playing up” as far as their competition, but we know that they are up to the task.

CYFL is one of the youth sports which are organized within the Coleman Youth Association. The Coleman Youth Association was established to bring all of Coleman’s youth sports, including football, baseball, softball, soccer, and basketball, together under one organization in order to better manage the activities, and most importantly, with the ultimate goal of creating improved facilities for these youth activities. The CYFL Football Field, which is a combined effort of the Coleman ISD (who supplied the land), City of Coleman (who supplied the water), and CYFL (who, with the help of the many volunteers and business donations, supplied the work) is a successful example of what CYA has set out to do and now they can move on to projects to improve facilities for other sports. Having good facilities and well organized youth activities has a positive impact on our kids and our community and is vital to the growth of the community. Thanks to CISD and the City of Coleman for their continued commitment to CYA and the youth of our community.

This year the CYFL is participating in the West Texas Rural Youth Football League which is made up of other small towns including Hamlin, Hawley, Clyde, Anson, Merkel, and Eula, and therefore on a competitive level with Coleman. The CYFL Board is led by President Cody Norris, with other board members/coaches being Jeff Hammonds, Michael Taylor, Rob Schuppenhauer, Doug Moore, Jason Steffey, Rowdy Allen, Duwayne Hunter, and Tim Perry. Even before practices began, these guys were working hard attending League Meetings in Merkel, making sure that equipment was adequate, and attending a training session that was generously provided by CHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Rusty Buzzard and Defensive Coordinator Mike Nunez. Thanks to all of these guys for their dedication to the success of this program. Being able to have home games is a real boost for our young players as it enables them to play in front of their home crowd which may include fans that cannot travel out of town to games. In addition, with a schedule that includes three Saturdays of home games – four games each Saturday - the community businesses benefit from out of town fans that come to watch their little guys play.

CYFL wants to invite all Bluecat Football fans out to our first home game on September 20th. Other home games will be played on October 4th, and October 18th, with the same game times. The Flag Division begins at 10:30 a.m., Mighty Might Division at 12:00 noon, Junior Pee Wee Division at 2:00 p.m. and the Pee Wee Division game at 4:00 p.m. The boys will be suited out in their Bluecat Blue with their new helmets that were provided by a generous donation from Wind Clean Corp. (thanks again Wind Clean) and they will be ready to go! GO BLUECATS!

Bluekatts Play "Fall Basketball"
9/9/2008
Coach Tracy Dawson has started a Fall League with many of the surrounding girls' basketball programs.  The games will be played on Tuesday nights in Coleman's gymnasiums.  The Coleman Varsity Division team will play their first game tonight at 8:00pm in the High School gym (or immediately following the first three games).

The Coleman JV Division has two teams:  Coleman 1 will play at 5:00pm in the High School gym and at 7:00pm in the Jr. High gym; Coleman 2 will play at 5:00pm in the Jr High gym.  Other teams participating in this league are Cross Plains, Cisco, Comanche, Goldthwaite, Mason, Winters and Blackwell.

The Bluecats Make it 2-0 on the Season!
9/7/2008

The Bluecats were able to hold off the Rogers Eagles in Brownwood Saturday evening at Gordon Wood Stadium.  In a rare regular season Saturday game, the Cats beat Rogers 35 to 10, bringing their record for the year to 2 wins and 0 losses.  The game summary follows:

1st Quarter
The Bluecats' Dalton DeLeon took the opening kick-off from the goal line out to the Coleman 26 yard line to start their first possession. Doyle got 4 yards, but a false start put the Cats back to 2nd and 11. Colton Buzzard's pass to Jamal Agbor was incomplete, but a passing interference call put Coleman on the 33 yard line with another 1st and 10. Doyle ran for 6 yds then Buzzard kept the ball for a 1st down to the 44. Doyle again ran to Rogers' 45 yard line for another 1st down. 2 downs later, Doyle got the handoff and broke through the middle to the 8 yard line. Salazar then gained 2 yds for a 2nd and goal from the 6. A Buzzard "keeper" got the Cats to the 1 yard line and with 3rd and goal, a quarterback-keeper over the center got the Cats their first touchdown. Buzzard's PAT was blocked which gave Coleman the lead at
6-0 with 7:17 left in the first quarter. Carlos Barrios' kick-off to Rogers gave them the ball on their own 43 yard line. The Eagles' first play took them had Jordan Sebek run the ball all the way to the end-zone for their only touchdown of the night with 6:58 left in the first quarter. Their PAT was good, giving them the lead 6-7.  DeLeon downed the kick-off in the end-zone to give Coleman the ball on the 20 yard line to start their next possession. Doyle gained 3 yards then Buzzard ran for 2. With 3rd and 5 from the 25, a pass to DeLeon was complete, but a fumble on the tackle gave Rogers the ball back on the Cats' 31 yard line.  Rogers' Kason Lowrance ran the ball on 3rd down to give them a 1st down on Coleman's 20. With 3:28 left in the first quarter on 3rd down, Stanley Cole caused Rogers to fumble the ball and Kyle Kemp's recovery gave the Cats possession again, starting on their own 11 yard line. A Buzzard pass to DeLeon got the Cats to the 37 and another 1st down. Then, Buzzard handed off to Andrew Isom who ran through a hole up the middle breaking a few arm tackles to get a touchdown with 1:50 left in the first quarter. The pass to DeLeon in the end-zone was complete for a 2-point conversion, which gave the Bluecats a 14-7 lead, still in the first quarter.  Barrios' kickoff went out of bounds, and Rogers started this possession on their own 47. A 3rd and 1 quarterback-keeper got Rogers a 1st down on Coleman's 40. With a one-yard gain on the next play, the first quarter ended with a score of
14-7.

2nd Quarter
Rogers started the quarter with a 2nd and 9 but an offensive holding penalty made it 2nd and 19. On 4th down, Britt Bartell and Jamal Agbor stopped the Eagles short of a first down, so Coleman regained the ball on the 32 yard line with 10:36 left in the second quarter. On the first play, Andrew Isom broke through the middle again, giving Coleman another 1st down on Rogers' 43 yard line. An attempted quick pass by Buzzard was knocked down by a lineman. On 3rd down, a pitch out to DeLeon got the Cats to the 27. A Buzzard quarterback-keeper gained 8 yards for a 2nd and 2. However, Rogers recovered an Isom fumble on the next play with 8:45 left on the clock for the second quarter.  Rogers' Lowrance gained 1 yard taking the Eagles to the Cat's 25 yard line. Two plays later, on 4th and 7 from the 27, Rogers was forced to punt and Buzzard's punt return was stopped on the 41 yard line. With 7:11 left in first half, quarterback Colton Buzzard's 44 yard pass to Dalton DeLeon gave the Cats a first down on the Rogers 15 yard line. On the next play, Kahlam Salazar carried the ball into the end-zone for a touchdown. The PAT by Buzzard was good which gave
Coleman a 21-7 lead with 6:45 left in the first half.  With the ball on the 29 yard line, the Rogers quarterback fumbled but recovered it on the 32 yard line. Later, on a 4th and 1 with 5:05 left in the half Marek kept the ball to get them a 1st down on the 42. Then on the next 4th down with 2:15 left in half, Rogers punted to Buzzard for a fair catch.  With 2:08 on the clock for the first half on our own 30, a handoff to Salazar gained 7 yards; on 2nd down Isom ran for 2 more yards giving Coleman a 3rd and 1. With 1:08 left, and unable to make a first down, Coleman punted and Rogers' Marek got to the 39 yard line. Marek's pass to Lowrance was complete for a 1st down to Coleman's 35 yard line. A Marek pitchout to Jordan Sebek was taken out of bounds at the 33 yard line. With :33 on the clock a pitch out to Sebek became a halfback pass to Cory Murray out of bounds at the 8 yard line; however an ineligible man down field gave Rogers a 2nd down and 13 from the 38 yard line. With :26 left in the first half a pass to the 21 yard line gave Rogers a 1st down. On 3rd and 9 and with 7.9 left in half Rogers came out of a timeout and Ben Baecker kicked a field goal from the 21 yard line. This brought the score to Coleman 21 - Rogers 10 at the half.

3rd Quarter
Rogers had first possession of the second half on their own 45 yard line after a Carlos Barrios kick-off. A penalty on the first play gave them a 1st and 15 on the 40. Another flag, for holding, gave them 1st and 25. On 2nd and 23, the quarterback went back to pass and was sacked by Britt Bartell and C. Barrios. On 4th and 27, a bad snap on the punt gave Coleman the chance to block it and the Cats took over the ball on Rogers 24 yard line. With 9:34 left in 3rd quarter, Buzzard's pass to DeLeon was incomplete. A pass to Salazar gained 5 yards, then a pitchout to Salazar was stopped behind the line of scrimmage. On 4th down a pass to DeLeon took him out of bounds and Rogers took possession on downs on the 23 yard line.  With 7:45 left in third quarter, a quarterback keeper gave them 4th and 5, so Rogers punted into a fair catch by Buzzard. Coleman started this possession on their own 36 yard line. A handoff to Isom was stopped by Rogers for 1 yard loss. Then, Buzzard's 20 yard pass to Isom was complete for a 1st down on Rogers' 44 yard line with 5:03 left in the third. On 3rd and 10, Salazar ran up the middle breaking a few tackles and got to the 24 yard line for a 1st down. A pass to DeLeon in the end-zone
(Pictured left - there was no flag thrown for interference, but YOU make the call!) was incomplete. Buzzard scrambled for no gain, then on 3rd down, Buzzard's 24 yard pass to DeLeon on the goal line was complete for a touchdown with 2:27 left in the third quarter. The PAT by Buzzard was good and gave Coleman a lead of 28-10.  C. Barrios kick-off to Roger's Sebek brought them to the 40 yard line. On 3rd down Rogers managed a 1st down on the Coleman 49 yard line. With a flag for a false start and a short yardage gain, Rogers had 3rd and 11 yards to go for a first down to end the third quarter, score still 28-10 with Coleman ahead.

4th Quarter
On a 4th and 4, Rogers failed to get a 1st down and turned the ball over on downs to Coleman on their own 39 yard line. On the first play Isom smashed through the middle to the Eagle 30. Salazar then gained 12 yards, but an offensive holding penalty brought the ball back to the 36 yard line. Buzzard then threw the ball to Jamal Agbor who carried it to the 9 yard line. Another penalty, this time against Rogers for roughing the passer, and half the distance to the goal, got Coleman a 1st down on the 5 yard line. Buzzard's pass to Dalton DeLeon in the end-zone was complete for a touchdown with 9:59 left in the game; and a PAT by Buzzard brought the
score to Coleman 35 - Rogers 10.  On the ensuing kick-off, Rogers received another penalty, this time for blocking below the knee, so they began this possession on their own 15 yard line. Their quarterback tried the option, but was sacked on the 13. After a 5 yard gain and an incomplete pass, Rogers was forced to punt which gave Coleman the ball on the 50 yard line with 8:56 left in the game. After a short possession Buzzard's pass in the end-zone was incomplete handing the ball over to Rogers on downs.  Rogers had short gains and another penalty to give them 4th and 14. After a timeout their quarterback was able to gain 25 yards for a 1st down on Coleman's 41 yard line with 4:54 in the game. A face mask penalty against Coleman gave Rogers a 1st down on the 25 yard line. Rogers' Sebek was then stopped by Daniel Valdez, but not before getting another 1st down. C. Barrios then sacked the quarterback for a loss of 6. Then on 4th and 6 from Coleman's 11 yard line, Rogers was unable to get another first down, and the ball went over to the Bluecats on downs. The Coleman Bluecats were able to hang on to the ball to run the time out on the clock, winning with the score Coleman 35 - Rogers 10.

Coleman JV Ties with Eastland
9/5/2008
The Coleman JV Bluecats played Eastland to a tie, keeping them from scoring on their last drive and getting possession of the ball with 14.8 seconds left in the game.  Coach Josh Alcorn said, "Our guys fought back after being down 2 touchdowns in the first quarter."  QB Logan Owens hit TE Reid Needham for a 25 yd Td catch in the 4th quarter, and after a successful 2pt conversion tied the game up at 30. Owens, FB Peyton Cody, and RB Dillon Dority were part of a strong ground attack that combined for 264 yds rushing in the game. The Bluecat defense played a big part in the game as well, giving up only 9 first downs to the Mavericks the whole game. They shut down Eastland in the 2nd half in which the Mavericks only scored on a kickoff return and fumble return for touchdown. Coleman controlled the ball most of the game and racked up 21 first downs.
