James was born to Jewell Faye Hampton Owens and James Arnold Owens, Sr. September 21, 1923, in Nugent (Taylor County), Texas. A veteran of WWII, he served in the Seabees of the U. S. Navy building roads on Okinawa. He married Vera Archer July 1, 1946, in Abilene. The couple moved to Boron, California in 1946, where he worked for U. S. Borax and Chemical Company, retiring after 27 years as a supervisor. He also owned and operated Boron TV Sales and Service in Boron. He moved to the Oplin area in 1973, and worked as superintendent of the Lawn Water System, retiring after 26 years, and owned and operated Oplin Jot-Um-Down Store since 1983. He was a Demoley Dad and Master Mason in the Masonic Lodge in Boron, California for 40 plus years and a member of Oplin Baptist Church. Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Bobby Jean Owens; and one grandson, Randie Morris. Survivors include his wife, Vera Owens of Oplin; three daughters, Alice Marie Denunzio and husband David of Oplin, Judy Ann Woodard and husband Tarlton “Butch” of Oplin, and Arletta Kay O’Shields and husband James of Coleman; six grandchildren, Cheryl Smoot, Tiffeny Fulgham, Levi Woodard, Regina Woodard, Amanda O’Shields, and Jarret O’Shields; six great-grandchildren, Kamryn Calderon, Gilbert Calderon, Jr., Alisyn Smoot, Morgan Fulgham, Emery Fulgham, and Brockston Woodard; seven brothers, Burl Owens and wife Erma Lee of Abilene, Floyd Ray Owens and wife Biff of Temple, Harold Dean Owens and wife Mary of Redding, California, Don Owens and wife Kacky of Fruitvale, Texas, Mack Owens of Abilene, Jerry Owens of Lebanon, Tennessee, and Frank Owens and wife Glenda of Clyde; two sisters, Lavoy Williams of Oplin and Jodie Owens of Henrietta; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She married Jim Ferguson Wells on November 1, 1947 in Coleman, Texas. She moved to Breckenridge in 2000 from Santa Anna, and then moved to Graham in 2004. Vera was a member of East Side Church of Christ in Graham. Vera was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, and one sister. Vera is survived by one son, James L. Wells & wife, Dianna, of Graham; one sister, Irene Smith, of Grape Creek; one granddaughter, Erica & husband, Glen Wagley, of Breckenridge; and two great grandsons, James C. and Clara Odessa Berryman Martin. she married the late Mr.
August F. Powe on the family ranch near Talpa February 2,
1951. She loved to quilt and belonged to the Valera Quilting
Club. She graduated from the Centennial School as
Valedictorian. Mr. Powe preceded her in death in 2001. She
was a member of the First Baptist Church of Talpa.

Freddie was born April 22, 1920 in Haskell County, Texas to the late Frederick Quincy and Maggie Nellie Buffington Blount. He was raised in Haskell County where he attended the Weinert Schools. On December 20, 1940 Freddie married Maudine Green in Brownfield, Texas and they have celebrated sixty six years of marriage. Freddie was a residence of Santa Anna from 1956 till 1975 then moving to Plains and in 1986 he moved to Rising Star. He and Maudine ran the Rising Star acoustical musical and he was citizen of the year for Rising Star. In 2004 they moved to Odessa where they have since resided. Freddie was a member of the Church of Christ and retired stock-farmer. Born on July 26, 1962 to Tommie Gilbert Walker and Sarah Louise Reeves Walker in Coleman, Texas, Tommy graduated from Coleman High School, then moved to Brownwood and lived there for 18 years before moving back to Coleman. Tommy was a volunteer assistant at Tom. G. Walker Funeral Home, a member of the Coleman Noon Lions Club, the Coleman Masonic Lodge, and First Baptist Church of Coleman. He is survived by father and step-mother, Tom and Lillian Walker of Coleman, two brothers and sisters–in- law, Tim and Ginger Walker of Coleman, Todd and Becky Walker of Kingwood, Texas, two step-sisters and brothers- in- law; Mrs. Cindy and James Davidson, Mrs. Beth and Bill Shugart, one step- brother and sister- in- law Scott and Nancy Pierce of Dallas. Mr. Alvin Flynn, 80 Alvin (Pete) Flynn was born May 12, 1927 in Arkansas, the son of Alvin Banks Flynn and Jeanette (Jenny) Leach Flynn. He grew up and attended school in Rosebud, Arkansas. On January 26, 1949, he married Peggy Hankins in Garden City, Kansas. Pete worked all over the United States and overseas as a Driller and Tool Pusher in the oil fields for 37 years. He moved to Rockwood from Garden City 11 years ago and was a deacon at Rockwood Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Flynn of Rockwood; two sons, Alvin L. Flynn, Jr. of Garden City, Kansas, Leon Fisher of Leoti, Kansas; one sister, Maurine Newell of Memphis, Tennessee, one brother, Bert Flynn of Garden City, Kansas; three grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. He was born Thomas Myron Hays, Jr. on June 2, 1924 in Santa Anna to the late Thomas Myron and Anna Belle Andrews Hays. He was raised in Santa Anna graduating from Santa Anna High School in 1942. Thomas continued his education at the University of Texas, UT at Arlington, University of Georgia and University of Houston. He married Avis Inez Edwards in Bogart Georgia on May 14, 1943 and they later separated. On September 19, 1974 Thomas married Ruby Faye Eidson in Norfolk, Virginia and they celebrated 28 years of marriage with Ruby preceding him in death in 2002. On September 6, 2003 he married Margie Petross Smith In Comanche. Thomas was a Captain in the US Navy retiring in 1974 following 32 years of service. He served his country during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of the Masonic Mountain Lodge #661 in Santa Anna and member of the First United Methodist Church of Comanche.

James Cullins was born December 1, 1924 in Coleman County, Texas, a son of the late George A. Cullins and Dillie Edith Pridemore Cullins. From 1943-1946 he served in the United States Army in the 342nd Armored Field Artillery. On May 1, 1949 he married Tishie "Speedy" Lackey in San Angelo and she preceded him in death in May 26, 2001. James was an oilfield driller, living in Ozona from 1972-1979, then moving to Gaines County. He came to Coleman in 1988 and moved to a Brownwood nursing home two years ago. He was Baptist. Survivors include two sisters, Edith Deland of Ozona and Melba Whiteley of Brownwood; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Coleman Cullins of Orange, California and Zella Cullins of Mesa, Arizona; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son Tony Cullins in 1991; three sisters, Gladys Wright, Annabelle Warren and Mary Telford; three brothers, J. T. Floyd and Zellar Estelle Avery Floyd. She married Arlie C. Jackson on September 2, 1945 in Coleman. He preceded her in death on November 1, 1979. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Coleman from 1958 to 1985. She moved to Breckenridge in 1985, and was a member of The People’s Church in Breckenridge. Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Bell of Temple, Connie Biggers of Arlington, Caroline Bell of Breckenridge; one sister, Estella Lamer of Sulphur, Oklahoma; three brothers, Pete Floyd of Coleman, Kenneth Floyd of Balch Springs, Don Floyd of Chandler; five grandchildren, Dennis Bell of Springfield, Missouri, William A. 60 Gary Scott Cole was born November 1, 1946 in Coleman, Texas, the son of William Scott Cole and Daisy Lorain Barnett Cole. He grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1965. He was a graduate of the University of Texas. In 1987 he married Elisabeth Gruen in Koblenz, Germany. He had lived in San Angelo since 2004. He was retired from AAFES. He was an avid cyclist and a member of the Concho Valley Randonneurs. He was a Mason. Survivors include his wife, Elisabeth Cole of San Angelo; one son, William Peter Cole of San Angelo; his mother, Lorain Cole of Coleman; one sister, Pat Balch of Baird; an aunt, Billie Gregg of Santa Anna; cousins and nieces. She married Tony Johnson on February 21, 1990 in Charleston, West Virginia. She was employed with the West Virginia Library Commission for 15 years and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission since 2001. She moved to Talpa in 2001 and was a member of the Texas Library Association and Wyldwood Baptist Church in Cedar Creek. Undean was born May 8, 1915 in Coleman County, daughter of
the late Cassie and Velma Coleman. She had lived in Coleman
County most of her life and accepted Christ and was Baptized
at Loss Creek Baptist Church in 1929. She was a member of
Central Baptist Church for many years. She was married to
the late Clarence Durham who preceded her in death in 1961.
She married the late J.D. Steffey in 1965.
Survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law - Judy and
Kinney Mac Rider of Gouldbusk; a daughter, Alta, preceded
her in death but the son-in-law survives - Raymond Haynes of
Wichita Falls; step-daughter and son-in-law - Linda and Jim
Stahl of Nacogdoches; two sons and daughters-in-law - Nathan
and Evelyn Durham, Archie and Sheila Durham, both of
Coleman; step-son and daughter-in-law - Ronald and Trish

of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and worked in
maintenance.

John was born in Mozelle on February 24, 1924 to the
late William John and Lennie Lenora Allen Loyd. He was a
lifetime resident of Coleman County and graduate of
Mozelle High Schools. On November 6, 1949 he married
Inez Evans at Indian Creek, Brown Co, Texas and they
celebrated fifty-one years of marriage. Inez preceded
him in death in 2001. He was a tradesman in the
construction business, owning a house construction
business and a plumbing business and in later years a
mesquite furniture business.

Gary Spurgeon was born July 10, 1948 in Post, Texas, a
son of the late Hubert Charles Spurgeon and Lula Mae
Murry Spurgeon. He grew up in many towns in Texas
including Odessa, Post and McCamey. He served in the
United States Army. On November 11, 1978 he married
Doris Dodgen Lane in Coleman. Gary worked most of his
life in oil field related businesses. Since September of
2006 he had owned and operated D & G Escort Services, a
pilot car company.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Spurgeon of Coleman;
three daughters, Tammy Taylor of Olathea, Colorado,

June 25, 1939 and he preceded her in death in 1987.
Survivors include: five daughters and sons-in-law -

Glenn Thomas of Coleman, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007
at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. Funeral service
will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 23 in Stevens
Funeral Home Chapel with Baker Rudolph and John Walthall
officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City
Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by Rev. John
Stanislaw. Services are under the direction of Stevens
Funeral Home.
Glenn Thomas was born December 19, 1930 in Coleman,
Texas, the son of Clyde Gordon Thomas and Bessie Bailey
Thomas. He grew up and attended school in Coleman. He
served in the United States Air Force for four years and
was in Korea during the Korean Conflict. On June 18,
1955 he married Wanell McClellan in Coleman. He and his
father owned and operated a seed and feed business in
Coleman. For 25 years Glenn Thomas served as the County
Clerk for Coleman County, retiring in 1994. He had
previously served on the Coleman Volunteer Fire
Department, Coleman Noon Lions Club, Coleman Chamber of
Commerce and the Board of Directors of Overall-Morris
Memorial Hospital. He was a member of First Baptist
Church and the Men's Downtown Sunday School Class. Glenn
enjoyed his coffee drinking buddies, his grandchildren
and playing "42."
Survivors include his wife, Wanell Thomas of Coleman;
three sons, Jerry and wife Annie Thomas of Midland, Gary
and wife Donna Thomas of McKinney, Mike and wife Cyndi
Thomas of Forney; three grandsons, Garrett and wife
Juliana Thomas of Wylie, Jarrad Thomas of Provo, Utah,
Luke Thomas of McKinney; two granddaughters, Brittany
and Kyndra Thomas both of Forney; great-grandson,

Father, Saturday, March 17, 2007 at Sagecrest
Alzheimer’s Care Center in San Angelo. Services
celebrating Voncile’s life will be held 2:00 p.m.
Tuesday, March 20 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with
Rev. Kermit Sorrells officiating. Burial will follow in
the Voss Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral
Home, Coleman.
Voncile was born June 13, 1924 in Voss, Texas, daughter of the late Percy and Beulah Loggins Strickland. She grew up in Voss and attended school at Voss and Mozelle. On April 1, 1940 she married Roland K. Thomason in Coleman. They were strong partners who worked side-by-side in all endeavors. Upon the incapacitation of Roland in 1975 and her son’s death in 1977, Voncile continued to successfully manage their farm and ranch operations. For over 25 years she was a member of the Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and was appointed a Director in 1992 and an Honorary Director for Life in 1999. She was a life-long resident of Coleman County, living northwest of Voss until 1945, then moving three miles west of Mozelle. She lived at her homeplace until entering Sagecrest in San Angelo in February 2006. Voncile Thomason was a strong, determined, Christian woman who will be remembered for, her courage, strength, faith and love. She will live on in our hearts.
Survivors include three daughters, Wyvonne Autrey of Katy, Texas, Charlotte and husband Gerald Dawson of Mansfield, Texas, Charlene and husband Jack Self of San Angelo; two brothers, Arch Strickland of Gouldbusk and Guinn Strickland of Fort Worth; four grandchildren, David Autrey, Paula Autrey Vick, Todd Dawson and Tenille Thomason Metzler; eight great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; daughter-in-law, Tammy Crowder. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Roland K. Thomason on July 6, 1986 and son, Keith Thomason in November 1977; two brothers, Cecil Strickland and Wayne Strickland; two sisters, Mabel Blanton and Reta Grusendorf; son-in-law, Dean Soderberg.

was a member of the 36th Division National Guard of

Haskell Clevenger of Fisk, Texas passed away Sunday,
March 18, 2007 at 12:48 PM at the Coleman County Medical
Center. Services will be Wednesday at 2:30 PM at
Henderson Funeral Chapel in Coleman with Joe Hailey
officiating. Interment will follow at the Brown Ranch
Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6
till 7 PM at Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman.
Haskell was born February 10, 1920 in Taylor County,
Texas to the late Author Earnest and Dovie A. Elkins
Clevenger. He was raised in Coleman County attending the
Cotton School on Morris Ranch. Haskell served his
country during World War II with the Army, Co. B, 142
infantry, 36th division. On May 19, 1945 he married Lena
Smith in Coleman and they celebrated fifty-one years of
marriage. Haskell was a member of the Church of God and
the DAV. He retired in 1984 as a drilling consultant.

Daughter – Lorna Clevenger of Berlin, Germany; 2 Sons –
Fred Clevenger of Kissimmee, Florida, Gary Clevenger of

David Ray Croft passed away March 9, 2007 at his home in
Oceanside, California. No services were held. His body
was cremated.
David Croft was born January 22, 1947 in Coleman to Roy E. and Dorothy (Bennett) Croft. He graduated from Coleman High School in 1965. He traveled the United States, as he loved the outdoors. He worked as an electronics technician for the Xerox Corporation in Chicago, Illinois from 1966 to 1975, with an interlude in the Army from 1967 to 1969, serving in Viet Nam, mainly in Saigon, Pleiku, Da Nang, and various locations of the Central Highlands. After leaving Xerox, he drove trucks from Dallas to Houston, started carpentry businesses in Chicago and Austin, worked on pipelines in Georgia, the Carolinas and Texas. After returning to Coleman for a year, David moved to northern California. There he prospected for gold and even wrote a book on gold prospecting. In recent years, he obtained water rights for generating electrical power in northern California.
Survivors include his wife

E.) Freeman of Port Aransas; one sister Kay (Mrs.

Ruth Elaine Gillespie Brooks left the pain and struggles
of this life behind and was welcomed into the loving
arms of her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, March 14,
2007. A service in celebration and gratitude for the
life of Ruth Elaine Gillespie Brooks will be held 10:00
a.m. Saturday, March 17 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel
with Rick Marshall officiating and assisted by Rev. John
Stanislaw. Eulogy will be given by Drew Hubbard, one of
Ruth's grandsons. Burial will follow in the Coleman
Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
She was born Ruth Elaine Gillespie on September 22, 1920
in Coleman, Texas, a daughter of Frank H. and Hazel Leta
Keesee Gillespie. She was a life-long resident of
Coleman. She graduated from Coleman High School in 1937
and married James V. Brooks on September 19, 1937. He
preceded her in death on January 4, 1992. She was a
homemaker and a former member of the Rebekah Lodge. Ruth
was a member of First Baptist Church and the Esther
Sunday School Class. Ruth was a loving person and
beloved by all who knew her. She always had good things
to say about others. Ruth truly mirrored Christ in all
areas of her life.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jimmie
Ruth and Jerry Hubbard of Coleman, Brenda Elaine and
Gerald Wisener of Coleman; two sons and
daughters-in-law, Frank Vernon and JoAnn Brooks of Big

2007 at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral service

Cove Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral
Home.
Ruth was born August 4, 1926 in Westbrook, Texas. She
moved to Coleman County as a child and attended school
at Novice. After leaving school she worked in Winters
for a time before marrying Ed Maurice Whittington on
December 20, 1944 in Coleman. Following their marriage,
they lived in Giddings, Texas for 20 years and returned
to Coleman County in 1976. While living in Giddings she
worked as a lunch clerk for Giddings ISD but most of all
she was a wonderful mother and homemaker. In Giddings
she was a member of the Lions Club and several women's
clubs. She was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ in
Coleman.
Survivors include her husband Ed Maurice Whittington of
Glen Cove; two daughters, Glenda and husband Floyd
Friedrich of Giddings; Norma and husband Dennis Walch of
Cypress; one son, Gary and Dianne Whittington of Waller;
step-brother, Billy Proctor of Grandbury; six
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lori Walch,
in 1992.

Eastland - Gladys Hale, age 90, of Carbon, passed away
on Monday, March 12, 2007. Funeral services will be held
at 11AM, on Thursday March 15, 2007 in the Summers-Bakker
Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Murray
Cemetery with Pastor Harry Grantz officiating.
Mrs. Hale was born on December 23, 1916 to James Collie
Nance and Anna Mae (Truman) Nance in Bomerton. She
married Marvin James Hale in Cisco on April 1, 1939. The
Hale’s were blessed with two daughters, Patsy and Peggy
Hale. Gladys enjoyed being a homemaker and was a member
of the Carbon Baptist Church.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband of over 57
years Marvin Hale in August of 1996.
Gladys is survived by her daughters; Patsy Bryant and
husband Charles of Novice and Peggy Stephenson and
husband Charley of White Settlement; her brothers,
Raymond Nance of Abilene and Bill Warren of Wichita
Falls; her sisters, Jimmie Ervin of Abilene and Jessie
Chappell of Abilene; grand-children, Kevin, Karen,
Kelly, Kristen, and Tonya; and great-grandchildren,
Reagan, Clayton, Kaylee, Dylan, Hannah, Cole, and Drake.

Laurane was born in Lansing, Michigan on April 23, 1941
to the late Ray and Nellie Marie Moot Oles. She was
raised in Lansing, Michigan graduating from the Section
High School. She married Ralph Estes Kelley in McCamey,
Texas and he preceded her in death in 2001. Laurane has
been a resident of Santa Anna since 2004 and was a
Baptist and retired waitress and homemaker.
Survivors: 2 daughters - Kay Oles of Evart, Michigan,
D'Ann Rodriguez of Grosvenor, Texas; 5 brothers - David
Oles of Michigan, Leonard Oles of Bull Head City,

Wayne Calvin Newton was
born December 10, 1927 in Burkett to the late Wylie M.
and Lestie Cochran Newton. He passed away Sunday, March
11, 2007 at Oak Ridge Manor Retirement Center in
Brownwood due to complications from diabetes.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00pm
Wednesday, March 14, at the Burkett Cemetery Pavilion.
Burial will follow under the direction of Walker Funeral
Home of Coleman.
Wayne grew up in Burkett and was a member of the Church
of Christ. He graduated valedictorian of his high school
class in 1945. He graduated from John Tarleton Jr.
College and entered the U.S. Army in World War II
through the ROTC program. After returning from service,
he attended the University of Texas at Austin,
graduating in 1952 with a degree in Petroleum
Engineering. He worked for the Texas Railroad
Commission, Atlantic Oil Company and later for the U.S.
Postal Service in Brownwood. After more than 30 years of
service, he retired to his home in Burkett where he
quietly spent the rest of his life. Wayne will best be
remembered for his love, kindness and generosity to his
family, friends and his animals.
He is survived by four nieces: Carol Ann Embrey of St.
Charles, Mo., Jane Ann Weinrich of Lenexa, Kansas,
Bonnie Anderson of Boone, North Carolina, Mary Kathryn
Coel of Katy, Texas; a nephew - John Klarfield of
Houston; a great nephew - Aaron Newton of Rockwall.

2007. She was born September 19, 1921 in Placid, Texas.

Joe G. Mitchell was born July 20, 1921 in Coleman
County, the son of Oscar Newton and Eva Roberta Dawson.
He served in the United States Army Air Force from 1942
to 1946. He married Lola Mae Smith on June 1, 1947 in
Arlington. She preceded him in death on May 11, 2000.
Joe was employed by Texas Electric Service Company in
Big Spring for 35 1/2 years as an electrician high
voltage installer. While living in Big Spring he was a
long-time coach for Little League. He moved to Coleman
in 1992, was a member and deacon at Concho Baptist
Church.
Survivors include one son, David Mitchell and wife Kay
of Pearland, Texas; two granddaughters, Kim Stoeck and
husband Chris of Pearland, Texas and Jamie Mitchell of
Missouri; two great-grandchildren, Braeden Stoeck and
Caleb Stoeck both of Pearland, Texas; several cousins.

death in August, 1991. She moved to Coleman in 1977 and
worked part-time as an aide for home health and hospice.

Nola died March 7, 2007 at Shady Acres Nursing Home in
Newton. A graduate of Burkett High School and former
resident of Houston and Huntsville, she lived the past
nine years in Newton. While in Huntsville, she attended
1st United Methodist Church and was a member of The
Huntsville Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. A good wife and
mother, she was a great cook and enjoyed painting and
working with flowers.

August 25, 1925 in Wellington, Texas, a son of the late
Vollie and Myrtle Lewis Dickerson. He grew up in Hollis,
OK and attended school there and served in the United
States Navy. Gene was a truck driver for many years. On
November 2, 1977 he married Doris Franklin Isabell in
Littlefield. He lived in Littlefield until moving to
Coleman three years ago. He was non-denominational and
attended Trinity Fellowship. He was preceded in death by
his parents, one brother C. E. Dickerson and three
great-grandchildren.

United States Army. In 1962 he married Billie McMillan
in Coleman. He lived in Pasadena, Texas for 15 years and
returned to Coleman County in 1980. He was a welder and
a rancher. He was Baptist.

Texas, a son of the late Roscoe Lee Pinnell and Ola Ruth
Wells Pinnell. He grew up and attended school in Adrian.
On August 6, 1958 he married Judy Tomlinson in Amarillo,
Texas. He lived in Channing, Texas for twenty years
before moving to New Mexico. He moved to Coleman ounty
two years ago. He was a cowboy and a rancher and a
member of First Baptist Church in Channing.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Pinnell of Talpa; two
sons, Mitchell Pinnell and wife Karen of Montgomery,

She was born September 15, 1931 in Colorado City, Texas.
She was the widow of Glynn D. Thompson who died in
September 1988. She was a member of Long Point Baptist
Church in Houston where she was active in the Gleaners
Club.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy L. Provezis and
husband Steve; grandchildren, Zachary and Jessica
Provezis; siblings, Sarah Vaughn and David Carey; many
other loving relatives and friends.
She was also preceded in death by her son, Jerry D.

Ray was born September 19, 1914 in Lorena, Texas to the
late Samuel Robert and Georgia Bell Springfield Beard.
He was a lifetime resident of Coleman County where he
attended schools. Ray married Opal Baker in Santa Anna
and she preceded him in death in 1983. He married Jane
Campbell in Coleman and she preceded him in death in
2003. Ray was a member of the Community Baptist Church
and a retired truck driver.

County Medical Center.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2007 at the First Baptist Church of Coleman with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating, assisted by Rev. Gary Boyd. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Flora Dee Daughtry was born November 3, 1909 in Eddy, McLennan County, Texas, the daughter of Thomas Elgain Daughtry and Carl Josie Whitfield Daughtry. She graduated from Coleman High School and Mary Harden Baylor at Belton. Flora Dee taught school for 10 years in Coleman County, one year at Camp Colorado and nine years at the Folk School. She was also the church secretary at First Baptist Church for 49 years and was the church organist for 51 years, retiring in April, 1990. She was very active in the church, having directed choirs, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, worked in W.M.U. and served on all regular church committees. Following her retirement, Flora Dee filled in as the church organist on occasion when needed.
Flora Dee is survived by numerous cousins, including, Peggy Parvin of Midland, Corinne Keilers of San Angelo, Grover Arnold, Jr. of Dallas, Ellen Kemp of Coleman, Major Dee Whitfield of San Angelo, Dee Will Keilers of Ozona, Patsy Powell and Ann Wilson of Coleman.

Mrs. James S. (Christine) Jones of Richardson, Texas
passed away Thursday, March 01, 2007 at 5:30 AM at the
Richardson Medical Center.
Graveside services will be Friday at 2:30 P.M. at the Santa Anna Cemetery with Rev. Bruce Hess officiating with interment following under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna.
Christine was born May 16, 1915 in Maybank, Texas to the late John Quincy and Willie Mae Varnon Murphrey. She was raised in Dallas graduating from Forrest Ave High School in 1933. On August 24, 1940 Christina married James S. Jones, formerly of Santa Anna, in Dallas and they celebrated fifty eight years of marriage. James preceded her in death in 1998. She was a resident of Memphis, Tennessee for 30 years moving to Richardson in 1976. Christine was a member of the Freeman Heights Baptist Church in Garland and a housewife.

Pete Rutherford of Santa Anna, Texas passed away
Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 2:57 PM at the Coleman
County Medical Center following an automobile accident.
Services will be at 11:00am Friday at the First
Baptist Church in Santa
Anna with Rev. Bruce Hess and Rev. John Stanislaw
officiating. Interment will follow at the Santa Anna
Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home
of Santa Anna. The family will receive friends at
Henderson Funeral Home Thursday from 6 till 7 PM.
Pete was born July 3, 1921 in Coleman County to the late
Oscar Vernon and Addie Edna Anderson Rutherford. He
attended the Anderson Schools and graduated from Coleman
High School. On February 18, 1942 Pete married Winnie
Alice Tucker in Santa Anna and they celebrated
fifty-nine years of marriage. Winnie preceded him in
death in 2001. He served his country with the Army
during World War II. Pete was a lifetime resident of
Coleman County and member of the First Baptist Church of
Santa Anna 60 years where he served as a Deacon. Pete
worked as a caterpillar operator with Santa Anna Silica
Sand for 20 years and retired in 1985 from 3 M
Corporation of Brownwood.

and Joe Rutherford of Grape Creek, Texas; Brother - L.

Kathryn Longacre Coffman was born September 27, 1910 in
Dothan, Eastland County, Texas, the daughter of Benjamin
Franklin and Kate Augusta Telford Longacre. She grew up
and attended school in Potosi. On August 31, 1932, she
married David E. Coffman in Lawton, Oklahoma. He
preceded her in death on April 22, 2005. She moved to
Novice in 1946, Albany in 1961 and returned to Novice in
1971. She was a member of the quilting club in Novice
and the Elm Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Robert
and Ozaine Coffman of Silver Valley; one daughter and
son-in-law, Nell and Arnold Lefevere of Coleman; five
grandchildren, Shannon Lefevere of Coleman, Steven Wayne
Coffman and wife Sue, of Goldsboro, North Carolina,
Robert Paul Coffman and wife Christy of Arlington,
Rachelle McKinnon and Katelynn McKinnon, both of the
Arnold Lefevere home in Coleman; adopted grandson,
Daniel Harrell of Nashville, Tennessee and 12 great
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, four sisters
and three brothers.

was born on August 14, 1944 in Ballinger, Texas. He died
February 15, 2007 at the age of 62 years, 6 months and 1
day, in Leland, North Carolina. He was cremated on
February 21, 2007 in Wilmington, North Carolina.
He is survived by his children: one son, Robert Dawson
Connelly, and one daughter, Carolyn Michelle Connelly,
both of Leland, N.C.; his mother, Bobbie Franklin Wagnon
and step-father, F.M. Wagnon, Jr.; four sisters, Doris
Hebert of Meridian, TX, Barbara Perez of Youngsville,

Lee Roy Elkin was born February 6, 1933 in Coleman, the
son of Ralph and Irene Taylor Elkin. He grew up in
Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School. He
served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. He
worked for the Coleman County Electric Co-op as
warehouse manager, retired from the Coleman Volunteer
Fire Department and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include one daughter, Kay Wilson of Coleman;
one son, Cliff Elkin of Irving; one sister and
brother-in-law, Dorothy and Glen McDonald of Coleman;
one brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Tammy Elkin of
Rule; three grandchildren, Heath Wilson and wife
Rebecca, of Midland, Nance Wilson of Coleman, Victoria
Zelenak and husband, Andy of Grapevine; three
great-grandchildren, Brady Wilson of Midland, Becca
Wilson and Colton Holland both of Grapevine; aunts,

Waide Messer of Memphis,
Tennessee, former pastor in Santa Anna,
died February 20th in Winberley, Texas.
A
fund is being set up at Santa Anna National Bank for the
family of Waide Messer. Donations to help with
traveling expenses would be appreciated.
Funeral services were held at 11:00am Saturday, February
24, at First Baptist Church in Canyon with Rev. Mark
Bryant officiating. Burial was held at Llano Cemetery.
A Memorial Service will be held at Ridgeway
Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee on March 3rd.
Waide Messer of Memphis, Tennessee went home to be with
the Lord on February 20, 2007 in Wimberley, Texas. Wade
was 50 years old and had just moved down to Wimberley to
be the Associate Pastor of First Baptist Church there.
His first day "on the job" was February 19th and he
passed away in his sleep that night.
Waide pastored First Baptist Church Santa Anna,
Texas, First Baptist Church Friona, Texas, Robert Lee
Baptist Church Robert Lee, Texas and had been Associate
Pastor at Cherry Road Baptist Memphis, Tennessee.
He is survived by his wife Pamela Messer and sons
Matthew and Timothy of Memphis, Tennessee; parents Buddy
and Rose Messer of Canyon, Texas; three brothers, Jeff
Messer of Amarillo, Texas, Doug Messer of Amarillo,
Texas and Randy Messer of Oak Grove, Missouri and one
sister Janice Hughes of Canyon, Texas. Waide was also
survived by a loving host of in-laws, nieces and
nephews, and many friends.

of Coleman, died Friday, February 23, 2007 in Comanche.

at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Rev. Father
Santiago will officiate with burial in Coleman City
Cemetery.
He was born November 1, 1959 in Coleman, son of the late
Juan and Concepcion Guerrero. Robert had lived in
Coleman from birth until 2002 at which time he moved to
Comanche. He worked at Stempel and Wind Clean while
living in Coleman. After moving to Comanche, he started
working at Kohler in Brownwood.
Survivors include: 2 brothers - Juan Guerrero Jr. of
Abilene and Rudy Guerrero of Comanche; five sisters -
Susie DeLeon and Olga Guerrero of Coleman, Silvia DeLeon
and Mary Capuchen of Santa Anna and Oralia Lewis of
Talpa; 15 nephews and nieces, five great-nephews and
nieces.

Mamie Love Evans was born February 23, 1905 in Coleman
County, Texas, a daughter of Lucien Clay Love and Nellie
Gray Tweedle Love. She grew up in Coleman, graduated
from Coleman High School and attended Southern Methodist
University where she studied art and music. On October
6, 1928 she married Lamar Evans in Coleman and he
preceded her in death in 1968. During their marriage
they lived in Washington, D.C., St. Paul Minnesota, and
Dallas, Texas before returning to Coleman. Mamie was a
member of First United Methodist Church where she served
many years as Librarian, Sunday School Kindergarten
teacher. She was a member of Bettie Morris Circle,
member of the Eastern Star, UMW and Friends of the
Library.
She is survived by several nephews, including Lucien
Love of Coleman, Bob Craig of Highlands, Bill Shaw of
San Angelo; several nieces including Jane Love Hitt of
Tulsa, Mari Anne Craig of Ingram, Ann Blair Charlesworth
of Burleson, Marilyn Craig of Highlands, Mary Eckert of
Mason.

Macelle was born June 29, 1918 in Sumner, Mississippi to
the late Thomas Azmond and Peralee Hope Teer. She was
raised in Mississippi where she graduated from the Pope
Schools. On May 24, 1937 Macelle married David Aylmer
Williams in Water Valley, Mississippi and they
celebrated celebrated 42 years of marriage. David
preceded her in death in 1979. Macelle was a resident of
Santa Anna since 1996 moving here from New Mexico. She
was a member of the Baptist Church and a retired sales
person with Sears Roebuck retiring in 1979 and had been
employed with Bloomfield Schools in New Mexico as a
special ed aide.

Medical Center in San Angelo.

Sam was born January 31, 1922 in Santa Anna, Texas, the
son of Charlie H. and Annie C. Elliott Jones. He grew up
in Mozelle and attended school in Mozelle and Rockwood.
He married Mildred Mae Eppler on February 15, 1940 in
Coleman. She preceded him in death on July 26, 2001. He
worked in the oil field as a pumper and truck driver in
McCamey and Kermit before moving back to Coleman in
1980. He attended the Hillcrest Church of Christ.
Sam is survived by his children, Wanda L. Whitton of
Kermit, Kenneth M. Jones of Pagosa Springs, Colorado;
Brenda Ainsworth of Odessa, Cindie Preston of Odessa;
nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two
great-great grandchildren.
We was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter,
Patsy Stack, three sisters and two grandsons.
Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Billie Marie Miller of Coleman died Monday, February 19,
2007 at Coleman County Medical Center.

Billie Marie Miller was born January 9, 1923 on the
Rafter 3 Ranch in Coleman County, Texas, a daughter of
J. P. "Jake" Miller, Sr. and Mary J. Jameson Miller. She
grew up on the ranch, attended school in Coleman,
graduating from Coleman High School in 1940. Billie
Marie was the first Rodeo Queen for the Coleman Rodeo in
1937 and again in 1939. She attended Stephens College in
Columbia, Missouri and Texas Tech University. On
September 20, 1942 she married William H. "Bill" Miller
in Coleman and he preceded her in death on March 3,
1987.
Billie Marie and Bill moved to Rapid City, S.D. in 1947
where they ranched until 1986, when they returned to
Coleman. While living in South Dakota, Billie Marie was
a rancher, a homemaker, worked in Occupational Therapy
and was an active member of First Baptist Church. After
returning to Coleman, she was a member of the First
United Methodist Church where she sang in the Chancel
Choir. She was also a member of the Coleman County Water
Board, Garden Club where she served as president and
Cattlewomen's Association, also serving as president.
She is survived by three daughters, Marie Miller of
Coleman, Ann Miller of Apache Junction, Arizona and
Julie Miller Shaw and husband Dave of Colorado Springs,
Colorado; one sister, Ann Miller Hargett and husband
James of Coleman; five grandchildren, Jason Best, Sara
Best Gonzales, Callie Best, James Shaw, John Shaw; two
great-grandchildren, Daniel Joseph Shaw and Connor James
Shaw; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a
son, William H. Miller II and a brother, J. P. "Bub"
Miller.

Edith Odell Toombs

Edith Toombs died February 16, 2007. She was preceded in
death by her parents and four sisters.
She is survived by eight nieces and nephews, eighteen
great nieces and nephews and numerous great-great nieces
and nephews.
Edith was born in Rising Star, Texas on Nov. 15, 1910,
to Arthur Lee Toombs and Elizabeth Josephine (Goss)
Toombs. She began her teaching career at the age of 18
and taught in several small schools in central Texas. A
firm believer in the importance of education, she held a
B.A. degree from Sul Ross State College with a triple
major in English, Spanish and Education and a minor in
music. She earned a Master’s Degree in English from the
University of Texas with a triple minor in Spanish,
music and education. During World War II she worked for
two years as a translator (from Spanish to English) at
the Laredo International Bridge. After the war ended she
worked for two years as a laboratory technician for a
petroleum company based in Corpus Christi. When Laredo
Junior College was organized in 1947, she was hired as
an English professor. She retired 28 years later in
1975. She served as head of the English Dept. for 24
years or those 28 years. She was held in high esteem by
her colleagues and students and remembered as “cool,
calm, efficient and consistent”. “She had a very sharp
mind” said one student, and “she knows more about your
abilities than you do”, said another. She was named
LJC’s Teacher of the Year for five consecutive years in
the 1960’s.
In addition to her teaching and administrative duties
she sponsored the college newspaper for many years and
was sponsor of the Phi Theta Kappa college fraternity
for more than 20 years. Reflecting on her career she is
quoted as saying, “The biggest reward in teaching, I
believe is the contact with the students. They keep you
young. I feel that I’ve done a service. I’ve done a job
that is worth doing”.

She grew up in Whon, attended school there and graduated
from Rockwood High School. She was married to Ellie
"Sam" Grant on April 13,1933 and he preceded her in
death. Joe retired after working for a number of years
as a secretary at First Coleman National Bank. She was a
member of First Baptist Church in Coleman and the
Eastern Star. She moved to DeSoto several years ago to
be near her children.
Survivors include two sons, Gene Rice and Kenneth Grant
both of Duncanville, Texas; five grandchildren, Belinda
Rice Horton, Mickey Rice, Scott Rice, Michelle Grant,
Raymond Grant; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great
grandchild; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Guy A. Whisenant of Brownwood formerly of Rockwood,
Texas passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at 7:50 AM
at the Brownwood Regional Medical Center.
Graveside services will be Friday at 2:00 PM at
the Rockwood Cemetery
with Rev. Jeff Dean officiating under the direction of
Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna.
Guy was born July 25, 1920 in Burke Co. North Carolina
to the late Eli Morrison and Lucinda Whisenant. He was
raised in North Carolina where he graduated from school.
Guy served his country in the U. S. Army and Air Force
during World War II. He retired in 1982 from North
American Aircraft & Rockwell International and had been
a resident of Coleman County since 1992. On December 25,
1993 Guy married Dorothea Longenecker in Brownwood and
they celebrated ten years of marriage. Dorothea preceded
him in death in 2004. Guy was a member of the Nazarene
Church.
Survivors: Daughter – Patricia Lambert of Florida; Son –
Guy Andrew Whisenant, Jr. of North Carolina; 5

Coleman, Texas passed away Monday, February 12, 2007 at
11:20 PM at the Coleman County Medical Center.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:30 till 7:00 PM at Henderson Funeral Home.
Services will be Thursday at 2:00 PM at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Stanislaw officiating. Interment will follow at the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman.
John was born on January 14, 1921 in Lawn, Texas to the late Luscious Marshall & Mollie Edna Hunt Watson. He was raised in Lawn where he attended schools moving to Coleman where he resided for 35 years. On June 10, 1949 John married Wilma Irene Dobbins in Brownwood and they celebrated fifty five years of marriage. Wilma preceded him in death in 2004. John served his country as a corporal in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Baptist Church and a retired Trucker.

Rite 32nd Degree and of Shriners. He was a self-employed
stock farmer.

She was born Mary Laura Insall, the daughter of Eric and
Sarah Smith Insall, on April 6, 1914 in Leander. She
attended school at Soul’s Chapel and married Odis J.
Johnson on December 19, 1937 in Elmdale. He preceded her
in death on November 22, 2005. She lived in Taylor
County for several years before moving to Coleman County
in 1971. She taught Sunday School for many years, was a
homemaker and a member of the Gouldbusk Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and
Gayle Johnson of Gouldbusk; one daughter and son-in-law,
Mary Beth and James Marchant of Ochoee, Florida; one
brother, Carroll Insall of Livingston; four
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and six
brothers.

Stafford "Bill" Baxter, Jr. died January 26, 2007 in
Oklahoma City.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM Monday, February 12, 2007 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City.
Bill was born July 11, 1917 and raised in Santa Anna, Texas. His parents were W. Stafford and Effie Shoaf Baxter. After graduating from Santa Anna H.S., he attended Texas Technological Institute, New York University, enlisted in the Army, entered officers training, and met and married Bernice Augustowicz in Westfield, Massachusetts. After WWII, he moved to Woods County, Oklahoma and graduated from Northwestern State University in Alva. Baxter was a Sooner at heart. He remained in the Army Reserves and lived in Waynoka, as Manager of the Zenith Gas Company. Major Baxter retired as Company Commander of the 45th Artillery Unit, 95th Division Reserve Unit in Woodward, Oklahoma. In 1969, he moved to Ponca City as District Manager for Oklahoma Natural Gas. In 2004, Bill and Bernice moved to Epworth Villa in Oklahoma City. In Waynoka, Baxter served on the School Board, was active in civic organizations, Founder and leader of the Boy Scout Program and President of the Woods County Red Cross. He was an Oklahoma volunteer firefighter until retirement. Bill was very active in the First Presbyterian Church of Ponca City, serving as a trustee, elder and treasurer. He was a Charter Member of Kay County Historical Society, Ponca City Country Club, and a tutor for children after school program. He was active in local politics wherever he lived and was a life long Democrat. He was an excellent swimmer, loved to play golf, was an avid reader of history and non-fiction, loved poetry and always had a garden.
Bill is preceded in death by a daughter, Judith. He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Bernice; a daughter Pamela and grandson William Elliot Kowall of New Jersey; son John; daughter-in-law Katherine and grandson Alexander Stafford Baxter of Norman and many nieces and nephews. Bill was a good Christian man who was never to busy to help someone and always had a good story to tell. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross, Boy Scout Troop Pack #777 Norman, or Mercy Hospice.

Georgia Lynn had lived in Coleman County all of her life and
was married to the late T.J. Dalton Junior in Coleman. He
preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Mozelle High
School and a member of the Harmony Baptist Church. She was a
housewife and helped with home health care.
Survivors: Her daughter - Lana Dalton; her son and
daughter-in-law - Jay and Deann Dalton, all of Gouldbusk;
one sister-in-law - Nelda Sampson Harkness; three
brothers-in-law - Niti Dalton, Billy Jack Deal and Leland
Martin; grandson - Ryan Dalton; granddaughter - Brooke

Eugenia Hartsfield Pittard, 91

Eugenia Pittard of Voss
passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at the Holiday Hill
Nursing Home in Coleman. She was born in Valera, Texas on
December 22, 1915 to George Washington and Agnes Eugenia
Hartsfield Pauley. Her mother died when she was a baby, and
her father then married her mother’s sister, Lee Hartsfield,
who raised Eugenia. Eugenia attended school in Valera and
graduated from Coleman High School at the age of 16. She
attended Simmons College in Abilene and received a Bachelor
of Arts degree, majoring in Latin and minoring in English
and Math.
She began her teaching career in Leaday in 1935. She met
Louis Pittard at a Halloween carnival at Brown Ranch in
1938. After four more years of teaching in Brown Ranch,
Gouldbusk and Valera, the couple was married on July 19,
1942 in the Valera Baptist Church. Their first home was in
Big Spring, where Louis was employed at the Big Spring
Bombadier School, but they moved back to Coleman in 1943. In
1948, the couple moved to their farm in south Coleman County
near Mozelle. Eugenia resumed her teaching career in the
Mozelle Schools, where she taught until 1979. Except for a
few years away to care for each of her small children,
Eugenia’s teaching career spanned 44 years.
Eugenia was an active member of the Delta Kappa Gamma
chapter and the Retired Teachers’ Association. She was an
active member of the Voss Baptist Church, where she taught
Sunday School for over 30 years. Her love for her Lord and
her church was evident to all who knew her. She lived a
remarkable 91 years and was ready to meet her Lord when the
day arrived.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lee
Pauley, two brothers, Chet Pauley and Andrew Pauley of
McCamey and sister, Lucille Horne of Coleman. She is
survived by her husband of 64 years, Louis Pittard of Voss,
three sons and daughters-in-law, Knox and Pam Pittard of
Bedford, Gary and Lee Ann Pittard of Tyler, Robert and Cindy
Pittard of Corinth; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and
Rodney Smith of Abilene; eight grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren; Steven and Belinda Pittard and their
children, Preston Knox and Presley Kate of Plano, Kirk and
Lisa Pittard and their children, Wyatt and Chloe of Fort
Worth; Amy and Shayne Wormsbaker and their children, Ashtyn
and Abby of Keller; Dr. Aaron and Jennifer Pittard and their
children, James and Thomas of San Antonio; Gina Wilson and
Seth Pittard of Corinth and Matt Smith and Jennifer Smith of
Abilene. A proud mother and grandmother, Eugenia’s greatest
joy was spending time with, and serving, her family.
Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 10,

with Rev. Ferris Akins officiating. Interment will follow in
the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens

She was born Cecilia Anastasia St. Clair on July 20, 1962 in
Arlington, Texas, the daughter of Evelyn Shelton St. Clair
and the late Robert P. St. Clair. She grew up and attended
school in Arlington. She moved to Coleman 1983 and worked in
the Human Resources Department for the State of Texas. She
attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Joey St. Clair of Abilene,
Jonathon Nevels of San Diego, California; one daughter,
Elizabeth Garner of California; her mother, Evelyn St. Clair
of Arlington; four sisters, two brothers, one grandchild and
several nieces and nephews.

truck driver for West Fork Tank Trucks. He was a veteran of
the United States Marines having served two terms in
Vietnam. He was a former resident of Granbury.

Mr. Rice was born October 15, 1911 near Sulphur Springs,
Texas, the son of William Rice and Anna Leona Pierce Rice.
He grew up and attended school in Cimmaron, Kansas. He
married Bessie Inetha May on January 18, 1943 in Dallas. He
worked for North American Aviation when World War II started
and retired from LTV after 30 years, working as an
aeronautical machinist. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge
#705 in Arlington.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie Rice of Granbury; two
daughters, Carlene Rice Shupee’ and husband George, of
Arlington, Dr. Kathleen Rice of Austin; one brother, Truman
Rice of Carlsbad, California; four grandchildren, Stephen

Dillard Woodward Baker died January 29, 2007. He was born
October 7, 1912 in Coleman, Texas. He attended the
University of Texas and was a member of the Kappa Sigma
Fraternity. Mr. baker received his J.D. degree in 1936. He
practiced law with his father, Judge Jesse Kirkland Baker
and brother Alfred Kirkland Baker of Coleman, Texas until
1937 when he was employed by the Law Department of Humble
Oil and Refining Company. In 1961, he was appointed General
Attorney and remained in that position until he retired from
Exxon U.S.A., successor company to Humble Oil and Refining
Company in November, 1977. He was a member of the Houston,
Texas and American Bar Associations and Fellow American
College of Trial Lawyers.
He is survived by the children of his deceased son, Jesse
Kirkland Baker, II, Catherine "Katie" Theresa Baker of
Houston, Texas and Mary Rose Browder and her husband Kervin
Link Browder, and his great-grandson, Durham Kirkland
Browder of Washington, D.C. and Theresa Daigle Baker, Jesse
Kirkland Baker's wife and widow. He is also survived by his
son, Roger Thomas Baker, daughter-in-law, Ellen Barrett
Baker, his grandchildren Dillard Mills and Alexandra Barrett
Baker of New Orleans, Louisiana, as well as by numerous and
wonderful nieces and nephews.
The family wants to thank Iris Suarez for the loving care
and companionship she provided to Mr. Baker for the last
several years.

death on March 13, 1999. She lived in Santa Anna before
moving to Coleman in 1976. She was a bookkeeper and a
Methodist.

celebrated 18 years of marriage. Willie preceded her in
death in 1972. Helen was a member of the St Willow Baptist
Church and worked at the Holiday Inn in Brownwood for many
years and for Ranger Park Nursing Home. She was a lifetime
resident of Coleman County moving to Pampa in 2004.

Joe grew up in the Gouldbusk area and was a member of the
Baptist Church and was an Architectural Engineer.

Thomas J. "Tommy" Williams
Sr. of Clyde entered into the arms of our Lord and Savior on
Monday, January 22, 2007 at Hendrick Medical Center in
Abilene.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January
26, 2007 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel
in Coleman with Rev. Kevin Kennedy and Rev. Larry Hooper
officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery
under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Mr. Williams was born August 1, 1937 in Coleman, the son of
Ernest Williams and Mary Margaret Welch Williams. He grew up
and attended school in Coleman. He married Barbara Jo
McMahan on November 17, 1957 in Brownwood. He served 11
years in the United States Navy and was with the first crew
to serve in Antartica during Operation Freeze. He received
the National Defense Service Medal, Fleet Marine Combat
Operations Insignia and Vietnam Service Medal with one
Bronze Star. After serving in the military, he lived in San
Angelo for a number of years before moving to Clyde in 1973.
He worked as a truck driver for Merchant Motor Lines, member
of the Disabled American Veterans and Vietnam Veterans in
Abilene He was a long time member of Trinity Baptist Church
in Abilene and most recently a member of Bible Baptist
Church in Clyde.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Williams of Clyde; three
daughters, Beth Broadus, and husband Johnny, of Clyde,
Annetta Marie Speicher, and husband Ron, of Abilene, Vonnie
Papp of Stuart, Florida; one son, Tommy Williams of Baird;
one brother, Franklin Maurice Williams, and wife Millie, of
San Angelo; one sister, Pat Walker, and husband James, of
San Angelo; one sister-in-law, Sue Williams of
Coleman; 13 grandchildren,
three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and
extended church family and friends that he dearly loved.
He was preceded in death by
two brothers, Ernest "Junior" Williams and Duane Williams
and one sister, Lorene Kimbrell.

Claudean Cervenka of Coleman
graduated to her heavenly home on January 15, 2007 after a
courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 19,
2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel in Coleman
with James Bailey officiating.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 20,
2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Waco.
Claudean was born August 8, 1931 to Osa Calahand Towery and
Hazle Glover Towery in Brownwood, Texas. She graduated from
Brownwood High School and Howard-Payne University. In 1950,
she married the love of her life, Joe K. Cervenka, and they
were married almost 52 years. He preceded her in death on
June 27, 2002.
Claudean taught school in Coleman High School and Mozelle
High School for a total of 27 years. She was a regional
officer and state board member for Texas Professional
Educators, now called Association of Texas Professional
Educators (ATPE). She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and
a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi.
After she retired, she was a volunteer for Hospice of the
Big Country and Meals on Wheels. While in Coleman, she was a
member of the United Christian and Presbyterian Church.
Claudean moved to Waco in 2003, where she was active in
Calvary Baptist Church and the Red Hat Society.
She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Karen Cervenka Kemper
and husband, Martin of Waco, and their children, Kelley Ann
Kemper Messer and husband, Jeff of Abilene, Grant Joseph
Kemper of Grand Prairie, Ross Martin Kemper and wife,
Bridgette of Waco and Annaliese Vanessa Kemper and her
finance’, Will Scoggin of College Station. Also surviving is
her daughter, Debra Cervenka Cox and husband Terry of
Granbury, their children, Paige Cox Taillett and husband,
Bob of Potosi, Lindsey Cox Sturlin and husband, Mark of
Granbury and Lauren Cox Solomon and husband, Chad of
Granbury. There are nine great-grandchildren; Kathlyn, Melia
and Reid Messer, twins, Ryland and Sterling Kemper, Lexi
Free, Alex Arce, Joseph Arce and Payton Solomon.
She is also survived by her sister, Nadean George and
husband, John, nephew Ben David Orton, all of Brownwood and
niece Mary Kay Orton of Waco.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Jeff
Messer, Bob Taillet, Ross Kemper, Grant Kemper, Will Scoggin,
Chad Solomon, Mark Sturlin and friend, Mat Kemper Gaines.
Claudean will be laid to rest beside her husband in the
Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens
Funeral Home.
Family visitation will be Thursday, January 18, 2007
from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

George Ray Simpson of Brownwood, formerly of Coleman, died
Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at Brownwood Regional Medical
Center.

George Ray Simpson was born December 4, 1916 in Coleman,
Texas, a son of Albert and Nannie Jane Simpson. He grew up
and attended school in Coleman. Mr. Simpson retired from the
Army and Air Force Exchange where he managed gasoline
service stations on military bases in California, Oregon and
Nevada. He lived in Coleman for a number of years and moved
to Brownwood twenty years ago.
Survivors include one daughter, Ruby McCullough of
Brownwood; one sister, Lillian Templin of San Angelo; four
grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, six great-great
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jo Ann Simpson; a
granddaughter, Debbie Gregory; a brother, Clifton Simpson; a

Patsy Weirich of Coleman died Sunday, January 14, 2007 at
Coleman County Medical Center. A memorial service
will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 18, 2007 at Wings As

She was born Patsy Ann Caraway on February 4, 1943 in
Houston, Texas. She grew up and attended school in Houston.
She moved to Coleman three years ago from Conway, Arkansas.
She worked as a cashier at Wal-Mart in Conway for 12 years
and was a volunteer for the Loaves and Fishes and a member
of Wings As Eagles Church.
Survivors include two sons, Clark Anthony (Tony) Weirich of
Coleman, William Allen Weirich of Missouri; one brother,
Jimmy Caraway of Austin; one sister, Betty Caraway of

He was born James Allen Bishop on November 12, 1932 at home
in Runnels County, the son of Tilmon Bryant Bishop and
Winnie Ethel White Bishop. He grew up and attended school in
Winters and married Pat Curry on August 10, 1967 in
Ballinger. He was a stock farmer, former officer of the
Runnels County Farm Bureau, member of the Coleman County
Farm Bureau and a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Bishop of Winters, two sons
and daughters-in-law, Paul and Sabrina Bishop of Stanton,
Page and Monica Bishop of Blooming Grove; two
granddaughters, Skye Bishop of Stanton and Parys Bishop of
Blooming Grove and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by three sisters.

Mosell Helberg of San Angelo passed January 9, 2006 in
Colorado. Daughter of the late Gather Aaron and Nancy Mamie
Williams Swafford, she was born May 11, 1909 in Loriane. On
December 16, 1925 she married Don Helberg in Brownwood. He
preceded her in death in 1982. A Coleman County resident
from 1945 till 1985, she was a housewife and member of the
Lake View Baptist Church.

7:00 pm.

Audie William Cathey, of Coleman, died Wednesday, January
10, 2007 at Coleman County Medical Center. A memorial
service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 12, 2007 at the
Central Texas Fine Art Museum (formerly the CCMC Wellness
Center), 219 Commercial Avenue, Coleman, Texas. The body
will be cremated.
Mr. Cathey was born April 19, 1934 in Brownwood, Texas, the
son of Sam C. Cathey, Sr. and Fannie Belle McLaughlin Cathey.
He grew up in the Owens Community and graduated from May
High School. He graduated from Howard-Payne University in
1966 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Religious
Knowledge. He did a World Tour and spent 10 days in the Holy
Land, preaching a revival in India where over 600 people
were saved. He preached in various churches in New Mexico,
Arizona, California, Utah and Texas, including, Union
Baptist Church in Rising Star, First Baptist Church of
Zephyr, Novice Baptist Church and most recently Northside
Baptist Church in DeLeon. He was a Member of the Southern
Baptist Association in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and
California; member of Northside Baptist Church in DeLeon and
attended Bible Baptist Church and Fellowship Baptist Church
in Coleman.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Cathey of Coleman;
daughters, Sandra Ratliff of Early, Melody Thames and
husband Randy of Early, Robin Black and husband Doug of
Coleman, Genna Cathey Long of Brownwood; grandchildren,
Phoebe Hicks, Heather and Michael Goode, Owen Ratliff,
Victoria Thames, Jamie and Rich Downey, Shawna Thames, Glenn
and Christa Black, David and Kate Black, Brent, Austin and
Kyle Cathey; great-grandchildren, Justin and Ryan Hicks,

Mr.
John Walker of Texline, Texas passed away January 8, 2006 at
Coon Memorial Hospital in Dalhart. Son of the late Hardy and
Tommie Beatrice Hill Walker, he was born March 30, 1931 in
Des Moines, New Mexico. On August 12, 1972 he married Faye
Caldwell in Texline. A lifetime Texline resident, John was a
graduate of Clayton High School and a Member of the Texline
Methodist Church. He was the owner operator of Texline Gas
and Oil Company.
He is survived by his wife, Faye of Texline; two
brothers, Tom and his wife Lillian Walker of Coleman, and Glenard (Skeet) and his wife Wanda Walker of Cross
Plains. Also surviving are four nephews Tim, Tommy, Todd,
and Mike Walker. John was preceded in death by one brother,
Herbert Albert Walker and one nephew, Randy Walker.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 pm at the
Texline Methodist Church and
burial will follow at the Texline Cemetery. The family will

away Saturday at 12:59 PM at her residence in Santa Anna.

the Santa Anna Cemetery under the direction of Henderson
Funeral Home of Santa Anna. The family will receive

Marcia was born January 24, 1932 in Princeton, Indiana to
the late Bill and Mary Helen Whittaker Montgomery. She was
raised in Princeton where she graduated from High School. In
1954 Marcia married Willis Morris, Jr. in Lovington, New
Mexico and they celebrated fifty-two years of marriage.
Together they spent many years traveling while Willis served
in the U.S. Army. She worked as an employee in the
commissaries and in the restaurant industry while moving
around the county. They moved back to Santa Anna in 1972
where they have spent many years enjoying their family. One
of her most enjoyable times was working with and watching
her cattle. Marcia worked several years at the Red Wagon
Restaurant in Brownwood as a cashier and was a carrier for
the Brownwood Bulletin in the Coleman area for many years.

She was born Eddie Lois Wesson on September 17, 1915 in
Coleman County, the daughter of Eddie Wesson and Lela Raymer
Wesson. She grew up in Coleman County and attended school at
Voss. She married Clyde C. Pittard on December 29, 1934 in
Santa Anna. He preceded her in death on December 6, 2000.
Mrs. Pittard was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist
Church in Santa Anna.
Survivors include three daughters, Karol Buse and husband
Travis, of Regency, Linda Pittard of Abilene, Geneva Harris
and husband Joe, of Coleman; a brother-in-law and
sister-in-law, Louis and Eugenia Pittard of Voss; eight
grandchildren, Terry Buse of Raymondville, Robbie Buse of

Mr. Morgan was born January 9, 1918 in Detroit, Michigan,
the son of Frances Leon Morgan, Sr. and Jessie Gaston
Morgan. He served in the United States Air Force from 1942
to 1945, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He later
worked for Southern Union Gas Company in El Paso and
Alamogordo, New Mexico as service and installation
supervisor. He moved to Coleman in 1965 and married Beulah
Mae Bullock on April 17, 1971 in Coleman. He was a member of
the Veteran’s of Foreign War and Trinity Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah Morgan of Coleman; one
son, Gene Burns of Gorman; one sister and brother-in-law,
Nancy and Donny Wade of Brownfield; five grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren.
