Katts Win One, Lose One in Eula
Monday
12/30/2008
The Bluekatt basketball team is playing in the Eula
Tournament during the holiday break. Monday, the Katts
defeated the Hawley Lady Bearcats 47 to 42 in the first
game of the tournament, bright and early at 8:00am.
Twelve hours later, at 8:00pm, the Katts played Cisco, a
team they defeated earlier this year. The Lady Loboes
had a better second quarter than Coleman and used that
to hang on to beat the Katts 42-34.
The next game for the Katts will be today (Tuesday) at
5:00pm.
Cats 9 - 5 in Pre-District;
Eula Tournament Next Week
12/24/2008
(From Coach C.J. Villegas)
Bronte defeated the Coleman Bluecats by a final of
54-39. The Bluecats are now 9-5 on the season and will
continue regular season play on December 29 in the Eula
Holiday Tournament. “Bronte was a very good test for us
before the Christmas Holidays. They are a very talented
1A program. They did a good job of shooting the ball.
Our guys did a great job of fighting and playing hard
the whole game.” We will play our last regular
season games at the Eula basketball tournament December
29-31, and then start district play on January 2nd. We
would like a huge crowd on January 2nd for the district
home opener. Our Booster Club is doing a great job of
trying to find ways for spectators to attend the
basketball games.

We played
a great game. I was proud of the way every young lady
played. Stats don’t always tell the story of how hard a
kid plays. We have a great team and everyone is needed
to help us be successful each and every night.
Defensively we played extremely well and made two big
comebacks in the second half. We struggled from the Free
throw line and behind the 3pt arch that was really the
difference in the game. We have our first district home
game against Dublin on Jan. 2nd and we really hope to
see a big crowd. There is nothing more fun and
energizing than having a gym packed full of your fans
screaming and yelling for your team and these girls
deserve it.
Go BlueKatts!

LETTER TO PARENTS
12/19/2008
Dear Parents:
We are in the process of putting together a 12 and under
and a 14 and under Softball Travel Team for the up
coming summer. We could be playing league ball in
Abilene. We will play in 4/5 tournaments in April, May,
and June including the State tournament where ever it
maybe. We can only take 12-14 girls. The initial cost
will be $100 per player. We will use this money to cover
entry fees and hotels if we need them. We will need this
money by March 1, 2009 when we begin practice.
I know that we will be going to the 8 game guarantee in
Midland, Wichita Falls and the Dallas area.
We will go to the 12U State Tournament and the 14U State
Tournament. Will not know where these are until the
middle of January.
We will have a meeting on January 4, 2009 at 5 P.M. in
the old HS Gym. Practice will begin February 22, 2009 at
3 P.M.
Pitching lessons will begin January 11, 2009 and will be
every Saturday. They will be either outside at the HS
field if it is nice or inside the old HS gym if it is
bad. Lessons will be $10 for 30 minutes and you will
need to bring your own catcher. There will be a sign up
sheet or you can call me for a time slot. Times will be
on a first come first serve basis.
Hitting lessons will begin January 11, 2009 and will be
every Saturday. They will be either outside at the HS
field if it is nice or inside the old HS gym if it is
bad. Lessons will be $10 for 30 minutes. There will be a
sign up sheet or you can call me for a time slot. Times
will be on a first come first serve basis. Thank you for
the opportunity to work with your daughter and to begin
to preparing her for HS ball.

Katts Lose Nail-Biter
12/17/2008
The Coleman
Bluekatts began district
play Tuesday night in Comanche. It ended with
Comanche ahead 45 - 42, but it was a close game the
entire night. At the end of the first quarter
Coleman was ahead 15 - 11. Carissa Zarate scored 6
of her 11 points in that quarter, including 2 free
throws. The 2nd quarter belonged to Comanche as
they scored 14 to Coleman's 4 points. At half the
score was Comanche 25 - Coleman 19. The Katts came
back alive after halftime to score 12 points to
Comanche's 6, and the score at the end of the 3rd was
tied at 31. The 4th quarter was when the action
really started. There were 8 free throws shot by
Coleman, but Comanche had 14 opportunities at the line,
making 10 of them. There were only 2 field goals
made by either team in the 4th quarter, one being Zarate's 3-pointer
with 1:35 left to put Coleman within 2 (39-41).
Jessica Morales made a free
throw with 1:20 left to get within 1 point (40-41), but
the last 37 seconds proved
to be a big part of the game. As Comanche was
taking the ball up the floor, a foul was called on
Zarate, her 5th. An important part of that time
period was that the clock keeper hadn't started the
clock. An official decided that 10 seconds should
have run off (hmm....10 second rule for half court???).
Coach Dawson convinced him that 10 seconds was too much
time to have elapsed so they put the
clock at 29.00 seconds. Comanche made 4 of 6 free
throws and Morales made 2 of 2 during that final 29
seconds and the score ended with Comanche 45 - Coleman
42. The Katts will be playing in the Eula
tournament during Christmas break and will come back
with their 2nd district game on January 2nd against
Dublin in the CHS gym.

(by Coach Josh Alcorn)
The Coleman JV boys basketball team used a 16-0 third
quarter run to put away the Hamlin JV Pied Pipers 58-18
Monday night. The defense played exceptionally well
which led to several fast break opportunities. The
Bluecats scoring attack was balanced led by Kyle Russell
with 14 points.

Season
12/16/2008
The Coleman Bluecats defeated the Hamlin Pied Pipers
45-42, here Monday night. The Bluecats “up” their record
to 9-4 on the season. Colton Buzzard, Dalton Deleon, and
Jamal Agbor led the scoring attack for the Bluecats.
Coach CJ Villegas says, “In the second half, our guards
did a great job of feeding Jamal the ball and letting
him work at the low post position. He did a great job of
finding ways to score. We feel like Jamal is going to be
a presence underneath the basket and we are going to
have to find ways to get him the ball. It is very hard
to guard Jamal at the low post, and we feel like that is
going to benefit us in the long run.”
The Bluecats will play here Friday, December 19,
2008 against Bronte. The JV boys will begin play at
4p.m. followed by the Varsity Boys at 5:30p.m.

Bluecats defeated the Bulldogs 48-40. The Bluecats were
leading the whole game, until Stamford tied the game
with 3 minutes to go. “I told the guys, that we have to
find ways to finish ball games. Stamford did a good job
of fighting the whole game, and tied the ball game in
the fourth quarter. I felt our guys did a great job of
making clutch free throws in the final 2 minutes of the
game. We started the game off shooting the ball well in
the 1st quarter. Our three senior guards (C. Buzzard, D.
Deleon and G. Edington) had a balanced scoring attack.”

Bluecats Beat the Tigers
12/11/2008
The Coleman Bluecats defeated the Hico Tigers 46-35 here
on Tuesday night. Leading the way for the Bluecats were
senior guards Glen Edington and Dalton DeLeon. The two
guards accounted for more than half of the Bluecat’s
offense. “Glen was on fire throughout the game. He
really did a great job of getting open and making key
shots during the ball game. We always try to stress to
the guys that we are going to have to make shots in our
own gym. Glen is starting to come around and shoot the
ball really well for us. I feel that Dalton does a great
job of getting to the basket. He is very quick when the
ball is in his hands.” The Bluecats recorded another win
in the “win” column, and are 6-3 on the season. The Cats
will travel to the Albany Tournament and face
Roby at 3:05p.m. on Thursday.

Katts Surprise 11th
Ranked Cisco
12/3/2008
Free throw shooting led
the Bluekatts to a victory over perennial powerhouse
Cisco Tuesday night in Coleman by a final score of
41-38. Cisco was ranked 11th in the state by the Texas
Association of Basketball Coaches (link:
http://tabchoops.org/finalG.html)
The Katts made 11 out of 15 free throws on the
night with all but one of those attempts being shot in
the 2nd half.
Tabitha Terrell scored the first field goal of the night
with 6:54 left in the 1st quarter; later in the first
quarter the Bluekatts went up 8 - 2 with 3:50 left on
the clock and "things were looking good!" However, by
the end of the quarter, Cisco had come back and had a
two point lead 12-10. That was NOT "quitting time" for
the CHS girls! By halftime Coach Dawson's Bluekatts had
recovered a lead with a score of 20-17. The 3rd quarter
was the highest scoring quarter for both teams. Part of
that was time spent at the free throw line. Coleman made
6 of 8 free throw attempts and Cisco made 7 of 8. That
was half of each team's total points scored in that
quarter. With the score Coleman 32 - Cisco 31 at the
beginning of the 4th quarter, the Bluekatts still had a
lot to prove to themselves. The Katts scored 2 after two
long minutes had ticked off the clock in the 4th and
they were up by 3. After Cisco called a timeout, they
drove in the lane and forced a foul, making 2 free
throws, and a 1 point game with 5:12 left. Coleman called 4
timeouts in the last 4 minutes of the game, and that
game plan worked for Coach Dawson! After Cisco scored
and went up one point, the Katts never looked back. They
shot 6 free throws in the final 3 minutes, making 5 of
them, with Nancy Cruz scoring the only field goal off an
offensive rebound. With 1:07 and the score tied,
Cheyenne Turner made two of those free throws to go
ahead, and with 4.9 seconds left, Carissa Zarate made a
free throw to make it a three point game. The Katts
defensive effort kept the Lady Loboes from being able to
get a good shot off at the buzzer and the Katts were
victorious over the Cisco team with a score of 41 - 38
and "things are
looking good!"
Bluecats Fall to Clyde, But Fight
to the End!

The Coleman Bluecats fell to the Clyde Bulldogs 59-33,
Tuesday night. The Bluecats suffer their first loss of
the regular season. They will go into Thursday’s
Ballinger Tournament with a 3-1 record. Coach C. J.
Villegas reports, “Clyde shot the ball well. They did
not miss many shots. It’s hard to win ball games when
the opponent shoots the ball as well as Clyde did
tonight.” Colton Buzzard led the Bluecats in scoring
with 18 points. “I was really impressed, on how our
kids came out and played in the second half. I just
wanted us competing against a good opponent.”

night. The Coleman 8th grade won an extremely exciting
game by the score of Coleman 48-Bangs 47. Leading
scorers were Austin Smith 15 and Anthony Thomas 8. The
game went back and forth until the final 30 seconds.
Coleman trailed by 3 points with 30 seconds left to go
in the game, when Austin Smith hit a 3 pointer from the
corner to tie the game. Playing tough man to man defense
the Bluecats regained the ball with 10 seconds left.
Time out was called, and a shot was taken and missed,
Shelton Zarate rebounded and kept the ball alive. With
less than 5 seconds to go Austin Smith hit a 2 pointer
for the victory. Anthony Thomas did an excellent job
running the team at his point guard position, Mason
Fuller, Shelton Zarate and DJ Terrell each did an
outstanding job rebounding the ball against a much
taller Bangs team. Tyler Doil and Dalton Gentry came off
the bench and gave the team a great lift when needed.
Coleman’s team defense played a strong game as well.
7th grade A Team lost to the Dragons as did the Coleman

Bluecats Defeat Ballinger In
Overtime!!!
11/25/2008
(
Contributed by Coach C.J. Villegas)
The Coleman Bluecats defeated the Ballinger Bearcats in
a very close ball game Monday night 50-49 in overtime.
The Bluecats started the game on a very hot streak,
leading the whole game, until middle of the 4th quarter.
“After the Sweetwater game, I told the guys that we had
to get prepared to play 4 quarters against a Ballinger
team that was going to be good. They are a very well
known basketball program that has been successful for a
number of years. I was very anxious to play this game,
because I wanted to see us play against good
competition. Our three senior guards, Colton Buzzard,
Dalton Deleon, and Glen Edington played exceptionally
well in a very big ball game. The three combined for 35
of the 50 points. We were very excited about the win
against Ballinger."
The Dec.
2nd game against Cisco has been canceled due to the
football playoffs. If we do not find another team to
play on Dec 2nd, then our next game will be in the
Ballinger Tournament with our first game on Thursday,
December 4, at 3:00pm against Hawley.

"The girls played great
and held their composure throughout the ball game. I was
very pleased with the way we keep ourselves in the game.
We were down by 11 after the first and at halftime. We
came out in the 3rd quarter and Ballinger hit three

17pts only 2 minutes into the third quarter. We fought

From Coach Tracy Dawson: "Not a great outing for
us on Saturday. This was the first game that I saw us
move backwards. I thought that the 4th quarter we
started to play, but for 3 quarters we just let Clyde do
what ever they wanted to. The most frustrating thing is
- we are getting high percentage shots and just can’t
seem to capitalize on them. Defensively we held
them to 43pts and that has been our goal to keep teams
under 45pts a game but we have to score 46pts to win. We
held them to 26pts over 3 quarters, after the 1 quarter,
so defense has been good. We just have to solve
our offensive issues; that will come. Patience is
a virtue and I am working on it." The
Katts play Ballinger tonight in Ballinger and Cisco on
the Tuesday after Thanksgiving break.

Bluecats Defeat Sweetwater
Friday Night
11/23/2008
The Coleman Bluecats were able to hold off the
Sweetwater Mustangs Friday night 45-35. With the win the
Bluecats are now 2-0. Leading the Bluecats in scoring
for the second straight game was senior point guard,
Dalton Deleon with 11 points. Also scoring for the
Bluecats were seniors Glen Edington and Jamal Agbor,
with 10 and 8 points respectively. Edington was a “hot
shooter” in the contest shooting 2-4 from the 3-point
arc. Coach C.J. Villegas commented that Colton Buzzard
did a great job of getting the ball down the court and
finding the open men, as he led the teams with 6
assists. “I was happy to see us, block out their big
men. They had two guys that were 6’6” and 6’7”, but I
felt like we did a great job of blocking them out and
getting rebounds. As a team we had 20 defensive rebounds
and 7 offensive rebounds. Our team this year is
obviously going to be led by a good group of seniors
that are improving each game. I am really anxious to
play the game on Monday, because Ballinger always has a
good basketball program, and I would like to see where
we are.”

Bluekatts Battle Back Against
Grape Creek in Close Loss
11/19/2008
With Grape Creek getting
into the Double Bonus (the Katts had 13 fouls) in
the 1st quarter, the game looked like it might get out
of hand pretty early. However being 11
points down at the end of the 3rd quarter didn't
discourage the Bluekatts! Full court pressure gave
the Katts a chance to come back. With 3:15 left in
the game they were down only by 5, then with 1:37 left
down by 3 points. THEN, with 44 seconds in the
game a technical foul against Grape Creek put Jacy Payne
on the free throw line and she tied the game at 46.
The Katts got a shot off down the stretch,
but with 2:41 seconds left in the game, the whistle blew
and the Lady Eagles made one to go ahead. Even
though Tabitha Terrell was able to get a long 3-point
shot off at the buzzer, the ball bounced off the rim and
Grape Creek won 47 - 46.

The Coleman Bluecats Boy's Basketball teams traveled to

leading scorers on the night with 21 and 15 points
respectively," Villegas said. Colton also lead the team
with 5 assists.
This was the first game of the season for your Bluecats.

Coleman, starting at 5:00 p.m. with the Junior Varsity

JV Boys Win Big at Grape Creek
The Coleman JV basketball boys traveled to Grape Creek
last night and started the season off with a win. The
key in the game was a 3rd quarter run where the Bluecats
outscored Grape Creek 16 to 4 after being tied 19-19 at
halftime. They also scored 18 more in the 4th with the
final score ending up 53 - 33. I was really proud of my
guys coming out after halftime and stepping their play
and intensity on the defensive end only giving up 4
points in the 3rd quarter. Kyle Russell was high point
for the night with 14 including 3 three pointers. Reid
Needham and Colt Jamison also pitched in 12 points a
piece and also had strong defensive games as well. The
Bluecat JV will next be in action Friday at home against
Sweetwater at 5 p.m.

From Coach Dawson: "We take a lot from this loss.
We did a lot of good things we just had a hard time
putting it together for long runs. We didn’t cover the
boards very well against a very aggressive Jim Ned team.
We had good shot selection and our half court defense
defended well. Turnovers were the killer 56pts for them
off turnovers. We can’t have that many and be successful
against that high of a quality team. Great thing is we
have a chance to get better Tuesday in Grape Creek.
Girls are playing hard and good things are happening."

Bluecats Win Final
Football Game of the Season
11/10/2008
A few short years ago, the Bluecats made the playoffs
with a record of 2 and 8. So it's hard to figure and
leaves a bad taste in your mouth when your team finishes
7 and 3 and stays at home during the playoffs. But, such
was a tough district this year with Bluecat losses to
the Bangs Dragons, Brady Bulldogs and Early Longhorns,
all moving on to the playoffs.
In their final tilt on Hufford Field last Friday night,
the Bluecats managed a 20 to 10 victory over the San
Saba Armadillos.

Coleman ended the season with a 4-4 record. Defeating:
Hawley, Dublin, Brady and Early. The 8th grade class
showed a great deal of improvement during the course of
the season, and showed they could overcome adversity
after the injury of some key players.
Coleman 8th Grade Basketball team will begin it’s season
with 2 games against Bangs this Thursday in the Junior

Longhorns Take Victory
in Final Seconds
11/2/2008
(Photos courtesy Gary
Strickland and StricksPics)
When the senior Early quarterback passed to his favorite
senior receiver for a touchdown with 20.9 seconds
remaining in the game, the Longhorn's hopes of making
the playoffs stayed alive, while the Bluecat's hopes
dimmed.
QB Nick Lyle threw a 35 yard touchdown pass to Seth
Coolbaugh with 20 seconds left to give the Longhorns the
win, but more importantly for them, a point separation
in the game. Coming in, they needed to beat Coleman by
eight or more to have a chance at making the playoffs,
considering they win this coming Friday. When the
Bluecats scored on an 18 yard pass from Colton Buzzard
to Trent Hambright with 7:35 left in the game, the
Bluecats still trailed 25-20, but the Longhorns were
only ahead by five, not the eight or more they needed.
Their final drive of the night sealed the deal, at least
for one more week.
