Latest Information from UIL on Regional Track Meets
4/30/2009
After collaborating with University of Texas officials and the twenty UIL regional track meet hosts, the UIL has tentatively rescheduled the regional track meets to take place after interscholastic competition resumes on May 11. Additionally, the state track meet is scheduled to be held June 5-6 at Myers Stadium at the University of Texas at Austin.

“The decision to suspend competition was not a decision we took lightly,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “Much effort and consideration was given to resurrect the regional track meets and change the dates for the state meet. With the cooperation of our regional sites and the University of Texas, we are now able to hold the regional and state track meets as we had originally intended.”

On April 29, 2009 the UIL announced that the state track meet would be held May 14-16 and that qualifiers would come from the tops four participants in each event from each region.

“At that time, we were simply trying to save the state track meet,” said Breithaupt. “When our staff had the time, opportunity and information they were able to make this happen. We had numerous calls in support of the original decision as well as calls to return to the regional format. We also know that additional conflicts may occur because of these changes. However, we believe this schedule represents the best opportunity for the most students.”

The tentative schedule and sites for the regional track meets is below.

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD
UIL hoping to still hold regional track meets
By Danny Davis     AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
Thursday, April 30, 2009
The high school track and field season may have been resuscitated.

Hours after announcing Wednesday that it was canceling this year's regional track meets, the UIL reversed course and officials now are checking into the availability of potential regional sites.

A new regional and state meet plan is hoped to be in place by Friday, UIL athletic director Cliff Odenwald said.

"It's been wild, to say the least," Odenwald said of the UIL's busy Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the UIL suspended all sports events until May 11 because of the swine flu outbreak. Track and field was the hardest hit sport. Regional track meets — originally scheduled for this weekend to determine qualifiers for the state meet — were canceled altogether.

But Odenwald said late Wednesday afternoon that the UIL's original plan was tentative, and that officials had decided to review it.

Odenwald said he was optimistic that regional track meets would be rescheduled.

Under the initial UIL plan, state track meet entrants were to be decided based on results from their already-completed district track meets.

Eleven young ladies from the sixth grade were chosen to be part of the travel team called the “Bluekatts”. The members of the team were: Destanie Armstrong, Alexa Bordelon, Ashley Coleman, Ashlyn Delagarza, Alex Dodgen, Shelbie Greaves, Kaylee Needam, Emily Roberts, Savannah Vasquez, Kaci Williams, and JoJo Zarate. Coaches for the team were Kristi Greaves, Joe Zarate, and Tracy Dawson. It was exciting watching the girls get better every week and learn how to play together. Most of our girls have never played anyone outside of their classmates in Coleman. It took some time to learn to play together as a basketball team and not individuals. Once we did things started rolling for us. We got our first taste of action in Bangs followed the next week at San Saba. We got everything going in Zephyr and we won the championship. The next week we were in the Early tournament and it was huge, we went 4 rounds deep which was great. Our last tournament was in Brookesmith, where we placed 3rd. We had a great first year back and hope next year to have two teams of 5th and 6th grade girls and two teams of 3rd and 4th grade girls.

Zarate's Grand Slam Propels Katts to Victory
Bluecats Win Too

4/4/2009

The Comanche Maidens got out to an early 2 to 0 lead over the Coleman Katts Friday afternoon at the local softball field. The Katts put one run on the board then finally pulled ahead in the 3rd inning with a triple by Jessica Morales which scored two runs.

After taking a 5-2 lead over Comanche, the Maidens weren't finished. They managed a triple of their own to score enough runs to tie the game at 5-5. They also added 1 run in the 6th inning to take the lead back from the Katts.

But the Katts saved the best for last, in the 6th inning, with bases loaded, Carissa Zarate found the pitch she wanted and proceeded to drive the ball against a strong south wind over the center field fence, a GRAND SLAM putting the Katts ahead 9 to 6, and giving Zarate her sixth home run this season. The Katts then added one run for security, allowed no scores by Comanche in the 7th and continued their great district run with a 10 to 6 victory. The Katts have won all their district games so far, with the exception of Early.

Going on at the same time, next door at The Yard, the Bluecats were also having success against Comanche. They beat the Indians 12 to 7.

"I would like to give Carissa Zarate #11 a BIG Congrats! on her GRAND SLAM!! against Comanche!"

Bluekatts Come from Behind
3/11/2009  (by Coach Steve Roberts)
The Lady Bluekatts started district play with a come from behind win in Comanche yesterday. The game was not decided until the top of the 7th when the Katts scored 3 runs to win 5-3. Though the score was close, Coleman out-hit Comanche 15 to 5. The Lady Katts left 8 runners on base, including one time with bases loaded. Comanche’s pitcher tried to work around Carissa Zarate ( on base .500) and Eden Duquette (on base .500) but teammates Jessica Morales (3-4), Erin Strickland (3-4) and Cheyenne Turner (4-4) kept putting the pressure on Comanche’s defense.

Comanche scored first in the bottom of the 2nd inning but Coleman came back in the top of the 4th with 2 runs starting with a Jessica Morales single, Carissa Zarate was hit by a pitch, Eden Duquette was walked, Cheyenne Turner singled in Morales, and Ashley Grissom hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field, who made a great caught, to score Strickland. In the bottom of the 5th Coleman made two errors to allow Comanche to go ahead. In the bottom of the 6th Rynn Norris and the rest of the defense stopped Comanche. In the 7th Jessica Morales singled, Carissa Zarate doubled her in, Erin Strickland hit a triple to score Zarate, and Eden Duquette sacrificed Strickland in for the 3rd run of the inning. Six pitches later the game was over!

Weather permitting we will play Colorado City on Friday, March 13th at 4:30 here.

Coach Villegas Releases All District Team and Team Stats
3/9/2009
The Coleman Bluecats boys basketball program coaches and players would like to thank all of our supporters during this past season. Coach Villegas would especially like to thank all the coaches: Edwin Brink, Kim Smith, Steve Roberts, Josh Alcorn and Mike Nunez for all of their efforts put into this season. “I was really impressed with the outcome from this basketball season. Our JH programs improved quite a bit throughout the season. I commend Coach Brink and Smith with the job that they did on the JH level. The 8th graders only lost 3 games the entire season. I was very impressed with our high school basketball program. I think it took the gentlemen awhile to trust the coaches and perform at a level that was very challenging. Our expectations were very high and the guys did a great job of responding. We would really like to thank all fans, family members, faculty and staff of Coleman ISD, media coverage and our proud supporters in the community. Without any of your help and support our program would not have been as successful as it was. Thank you for everything that you do.”
