Bluekatts Basketball Has
Been Busy
7/14/2009 (by Coach Dawson)
The Rick Penny Shooting
Clinic was a great success. Monday and Tuesday Coleman’s
basketball program was glad to have Rick Penny in town to
put on 4 mini- shooting clinics. The clinic focused on
coaching ability, correct form, accuracy, and a quick
release. Each player had one-on-one work with Coach Penny as
well as group work. I was very pleased with the turnout and
could see the improvement in many of the kids’ shots by the
end of the clinic. With focused practice and time we should
begin to see a great improvement in our shooting next
season. We had 15 high school girls, 10 junior high girls,
and 8 boys attended the clinic.
The Bluekatts
have also been busy this summer playing basketball
tournaments. We were involved in Mason, Bangs, Clyde, and
Eula tournaments and finished the summer run with a 19-5
summer league record and look forward to a strong fall
league and regular season. I can honestly say we are
bringing back the pride and respect the Bluekatts basketball
program deserves.
Coleman Country Club
Hosts Successful One-Person Scramble
7/8/2009
by SuJo McKee
The Coleman Country Club hosted its One-Person Golf Scramble
on June 27th. Forty-five golfers braved the 100 degree heat
to compete for the top honors. The flighting of the
tournament was based on a draw of either the front 9 holes
or the back 9 holes. The result of the draw was the back 9
so all golfers were flighted according to what they shot on
the back 9 holes. The first 9 holes was then included for an
18-hole total. The winners were based on the total score.
A battle ensued for first place honors in the Championship
Flight with a tie between Wes Baxter (29/30) and Creston
Olinger, Jr (30/29) for an 18-hole total of 59. Second place
was also a tie between Jacky Dodgen (32/32) and Chance
Campbell for a total of 64. In the President’s Flight, there
was a tie between Scott Middleton (34/30) and James Varner
(35/29) for first place honors with an 18-hole total of 64.
A three-way tie followed next for second place between Ricky
Baker (34/31), Tim Parrott (35/30) and Steve Tiemann (35/30)
who all shot an 18-hole total of 65.
Rick McKee (36/31) took first place in the First Flight with
a total of 67. Sara Young (36/32) finished in second place
with an 18-hole score of 68 followed closely by David
Strickland (36/33) who took third place with a total of 69.
In the Second Flight, Craig Duquette (38/30) finished in
first place with an 18-hole total of 68. Battling for second
place honors was a tie between Brian Carrier (37/32) and
Jace Staggs (37/32) who finished the day with an 18-hole
total of 69. All teams were treated to a delicious chicken
dinner catered by Best Fried Chicken on Saturday night.

Cheerleaders Attend Camp -
Bring Home Award
7/2/2009
The CHS Varsity Cheerleaders attended camp at Angelo State
University on June 22-25. The four day camp is very busy and
lots of learning goes on during these 4 days. The girls did
a great job all week and worked extra hard. They won the
Spirit stick each night it was given and brought one home.
The girls were evaluated every evening on material they
learned throughout the day. The girls received superior
ribbons, on the Cheer evaluation on day two and a superior
on the X-treme Routine evaluation on day three. The X-treme
routine is the dance taught by the staff and the squad has
to incorporate their own material to complete the routine.
On day two, there was a jump off and our own Coleman
Bluecat, Lura Rylant won the mascot jump off. On day three,
the girls had a Heroes Rally, where the girls dressed up as
their favorite super hero and they participated in a
practice pep rally. An award is given at the end of the pep
rally and Coleman won this honor as well. The girls were
also evaluated on a Game Day preparation and received a
superior. On day three, Casie Swening and Dylan Buzzard were
selected to the All American Cheerleading Squad. The girls
competed in the camp championships in Cheer and X-treme
routine on the final day and received 3rd place trophies in
both. Coleman came home with the two top awards of the
entire camp. The girls were voted upon by the other squads
as being the best leaders of the camp. They won the
leadership award which consisted of a plaque, a gatorade
cooler with gatorade packets and cups. Also on the last day,
the UCA Cheerleading staff, chooses a squad that has shown
spirit throughout the week and have had the best traditions
from their school. Coleman also won this award, which is the
Traditions/Banana award. The award consisted of a plaque, a
gatorade cooler with gatorade packets and cups. The
Traditions/Banana award is a big honor, and the girls did a
great job all week and were very deserving of all their
awards. Mascot Lura Rylant also won the biggest award at
camp, she won the Camp Champ in the Mascot division. She did
a great job! Overall Coleman was represented very well and
all the girls did a great job.
The next busy
week for the cheerleaders is coming up, they will be hosting
their own Mini-Cheer Camp on July 27-30,
so mark your calendars and look for further information to
come. Information will be posted on Colemannews.com and the
Democratic-Voice.
