Bluekatt Softball In Abilene
Tournament - Play in Coleman Tuesday
2/23/2009
When you go to a tournament, you hope that you have some
good completion to help improve your team for the
upcoming season. That was my hope with the tournament
last weekend in Abilene. Once we finished pool play we
discovered that we were the smallest class team in our
bracket.
On Saturday we opened with 3A Breckenridge and played
them well. The final score was 3-0. Eden Duquette
pitched very well and was on base every time. Cheyenne
Turner got on base 2 of 4 times.
In the second game the BlueKatts played 4A Amarillo
Tascosa and defeated them 15 -10. Rynn Norris pitched
very well in this game. Every starter got on base at
least 2 of 4 time. Eden Duquette was perfect on base
with 2 walks, 2 for 2 at bat, 3 RBI’s and one double.
Carissa Zarate had a double, 2 for 3 at bat. The team
had 19 total stolen bases in the game with Jessica
Morales having a game high 5. She also lead the team
with in walks with 4. It was a great team effort to win
this game.
In the very next game, we had to play 5A Bastrop. They
had not been hitting well during the tournament until
they played us. It was their 2nd game of the day and
they had decided that they would not lose to a 2A
school. The girls tried hard but the cold, illness,
injury, and Bastrop’s hitting was too much. We lost
13-0. This made us 4th place in our bracket. Bastrop
would go on to win the rest of their games easily for
the championship. They beat Sweetwater in the finals
13-0 and 10-2.
The Bluekatts play at home Tuesday, February 24th
at 5:00 against former
district opponent Grape Creek. Please come and support these
young ladies.

Lady
Mountaineers Advance to Regionals
2/23/2009
Santa Anna won a thrilling area playoff game 47-45 over
perennial powerhouse Throckmorton on Friday night.
Executing the running game and press to near perfection,
the Lady Mountaineers jumped on Throckmorton taking a
20-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The first
half score was 31-22 as both teams began to get into
foul trouble in the second quarter.
Fouls began to take its toll on the Lady Mountaineers
when Sarah Herrod and Kendra Coleman committed fouls
early in the third quarter. Up to this point Santa Anna
had extended its lead to 15 points. Throckmorton then
stormed back outscoring the Lady Mountaineers 16-7
resulting in a 38-38 score at the end of the third
quarter.
The fourth quarter was a see-saw battle with both teams
building small leads but never able to mount much of a
run. In the final minutes Santa Anna was able to hit two
free-throws, one by Layken Deleon and the other by Molly
Pritchard to win the game. Santa Anna now advances to
the regional quarterfinals to play #1 ranked Roby.
The Lady
Mountaineers will play on Tuesday, February 24, 2009.
The game will start at 6:00pm in Tuscola Jim Ned.

Playoff Bound
2/13/2009 (Contributed
by Coach Bob Libby)
The Lady Mountaineers of Santa Anna are currently in the
process of making a strong playoff run. It all started
on November 11th when the Baird Bears visited Santa Anna
and were defeated 45-31. This game started a five game
winning streak in which the Lady Mountaineers outscored
their opponents by an average of 60-33. Included in that
streak was a 66-21 drubbing of last year’s district
champion, Paint Rock.
The championship game of the Newcastle Tournament
resulted in the Lady Mountaineers first loss, 50-54 to
Newcastle. The Lady Mountaineers then started another
streak by winning their next five games by an average
score of 50-33. Included in that run was a 50-41 victory
over perennial powerhouse Priddy.
The championship game of the Rochelle Tournament pitted
the Lady Mountaineers against last season’s state
semifinalist, the Rochelle Hornettes. The Lady
Mountaineers got themselves into early foul trouble and
was never able to gain any momentum resulting in their
biggest loss of the season, 70-47. Santa Anna then had
to visit district foe Blanket, a team that has not fared
very well in recent history. However, this season’s
Blanket team has been the surprise area team of the
year. They caught Santa Anna napping and won by a score
of 48-47. Due to the fact that Santa Anna’s district
consists of nine teams, this dropped the Lady
Mountaineers into a fourth place tie.
Santa Anna has been plagued with injury problems all
season. Seniors Layken Deleon and Aidelaida Dean were
finally healthy enough to be inserted into the starting
lineup which has helped the Lady Mountaineers start
another winning streak. Santa Anna is currently on a 15
game streak outscoring its opponents 66-29. Key
victories in the streak have been over pre-season
favorite Rising Star 57-32 and 63-31; pre-season
district runner-up Brookesmith 63-40 and 54-37; district
playoff qualifier Blanket 62-51; and district qualifier
Zephyr 68-50 and 50-40.
There have been several factors that have been
instrumental to the Lady Mountaineer’s success this
season. Number One- Team Play!
Santa Anna has had outstanding offensive and defensive
efforts at one time or another from every varsity girl,
whether it is by scoring, defense or rebounding. The Big
Three- Sr. Kendra Coleman 17ppg, 8rpg, 4spg; Sr. Molly
Pritchard 14ppg, 9rpg; and So. Sarah Herrod 13ppg, 7rpg,
4spg; have all had consistent performances throughout
the season and has started every game. If they were not
playing particularly well in one phase of the game, they
made up for it somewhere else.
Number Two- Bench play
has been a major factor. The following girls have all
started for the Lady Mountaineers: Sr. Joanie Dean,
Jr.’s EJ Ramsey, Sierra Guerrero and Harlee Anderson,
So.’s Paige Guerrero and Loren Pritchard, and Fr.
Kaitlyn Krause. When a starter went down or was
fatigued, these girls have for the most part, played
very consistently.
Number Three- Junior Varsity girls-
Jr. Heather McMillan, So. Ashlee Gibson, Fr. Stevie Van
Vost, Aspyn King, Kelsie Tobin, Amber Musick, and Becca
Melton have all made major contributions with their
hustle and hard work. They have been on the receiving
end of varsity workouts and have managed to survive. Not
only have they survived but there have been moments that
they have extended the varsity girls in practice. It has
been these moments that has been the most humbling
lesson for any varsity player, that is “ Never
underestimate or overestimate the ability of you or your
competition.”
Friday
night begins the final season of the year, the playoffs.
Santa Anna
will play the Haskell Maidens at home in a practice game
on February 13th. Game time is set for 8:00 or after the
May/Santa Anna varsity boys’ game. Haskell has a super
program and hopefully will help prepare the Lady
Mountaineers for the playoffs. As of yet, a practice
game for Tuesday has not been set up. Next Friday the
Lady Mountaineers will play the winner of the
Throckmorton/Trent bi-district game.

9th Boys Results from Thursday
1/30/2009
(contributed by Coach Steve Roberts)
After a few days off the freshman team played Dublin’s
JV B team. All though they lost 35 – 32, the young men
played with a great deal of determination. On defense
they controlled 6 of the 8 Dublin players, but the two
sophomores where a little too much for them. They scored
25 of Dublin’s points.
On offense, everyone on the team contributed to the
scoring. Cody Peyton had a season high 18 points. Ryan
Kuehler and Dillon Dority had 4 points each. Adding 2
points where Troy Hubbard and Able Vasquez. With one
point each was Jonathan Amador and Patrick Hollis. In
the end too many missed lay-ups and free throws caused
the team to lose.
They will not action again until next Tuesday, when they
travel to Brady.

Bluecats Now in 2nd Place in
District
Beat Comanche 55-48
1/23/2009
Don't look now, but the Coleman Bluecats are sitting in
2nd place in District 8-AA basketball and finished the
first half of district with a 4-2 record.
The Coleman Bluecats found a way to win a very tough
district ball game here in Coleman on Tuesday night. The
win over Comanche increases the Bluecats season record
to 13-10 and 4-2 in district. “The win over Comanche was
huge for our team. We are very excited to win this ball
game. We knew going into the game that it was going to
be tough. I have had the opportunity to watch Comanche
play a couple of games, and knew that they were going to
be a very tough team to beat. From the jump ball to the
final buzzer, our guys never gave up. At halftime, they
just kept telling themselves, that they could beat them.
I am extremely proud of how hard our kids fought during
this matchup.” said Coach C.J. Villegas.
Colton
Buzzard led all scorers with 23 points. Colton displayed
a fine night of shooting the basketball Tuesday night.
He went 5-5 from the three point line, and 8-8 from the
free throw line. He only missed two shots the entire
night. “When you have a player shoot 100% from the 3
point and free throw line, then that should give your
team a great opportunity to win ball games. As a team we
shot 57% from the field, 70% from the three point line,
and 92% from the free throw line. When you display an
offensive performance like we did Tuesday night, by
making key shots that will always be good for the home
team," Villegas said.
The Bluecats are finished with the first half of
district play and are 4-2 in district. They will have an
open game this Friday, January 23, 2009. The other teams
will finish up the first half of district play Friday
night. “I told the guys Thursday morning, that having
that last game open could be a good thing and a bad
thing depending on the outcome of the games in the
second half of district play. Our guys understand that
this playoff hunt is wide open up until this point,”
Villegas said.

The
Bluecats are riding a three-game winning streak, going
into the second half of district play. “We are not able
to look past any team in this district. As some of those
teams that are at the bottom of district, can easily
reverse the record, and make a run for the playoffs.
That’s how close this playoff race can get in the second
half," Villegas said.
The Bluecats will resume play next Tuesday night
January 27 as they travel
to Dublin. They will play their next home game Friday,
January 30, 2009 against Bangs. We would like to thank
the community for their support against Comanche. “I
really feel like our players feed off of the crowd. They
love for the crowd to get into the game, and that means
a lot to them. We would really like for the community’s
support for our next few home games as we closeout
district play and fight for a playoff spot.”

9th Boys Beat Comanche
1/21/2009
(Contributed by Coach Steve Roberts)
Some times when you play an opponent that you have
defeated easily the first time, you have a hard time
getting ready for them. Especially when you are a
freshman in high school. This was the case last night
when the Coleman Freshman team played Comanche for the
second time. They defeated them by 15 the first time and
did not play very well against them this time. The
team did win 3 of 4 quarters and the game by a score of
31 to 24. Leading the team in scoring with 10
points was Peyton Cody with 10. Justin Morales had 9
points, Luis Landaverde had 8, with two 3 point shots,
and Marcus Hurtado & Troy Hubbard each had two.
This makes them 5-1 against district foes and 6-5
overall. They will play at 6:30 in Dublin next
Tuesday.

Bluecats Stats from Friday
1/19/2009
(Contributed by Coach C.J. Villegas)
The Coleman Bluecats led the entire game, and were able
to outscore the Armadillos, in another district game
here in Coleman on Friday night. The win allows the
Bluecats to go 3-2 in district play. The loss drops San
Saba to 0-4 in district. Dalton Deleon led all scorers
with 17 points. “I feel like this game every player
contributed well to our team. We had every guy submit
positive minutes and positive roles in this game. Andrew
Isom had one of his major games of this season, coming
off the bench and scoring 9 points. Isom did a fine job,
on using his quickness and allowing himself to get the
basket and score points.”
Our attention now turns to the Comanche
Indians who are 3-1 in district play. “Comanche is
considered one of the best teams in this district. Their
only loss in district play is to Brady who is undefeated
in district. Comanche is a very well disciplined team
that does a ton of things right. They have two
guys that are 6’4” and a shooting guard that is 6’1”. We
are going to have to play our best game of the season,
and do things right in order to beat them. Their defense
is also very good. They will run a full court press
throughout the game, and then drop back into a 2-3
zone. We are going to have to make shots and do our best
to keep them off the offensive rebounds.”

Early Longhorns - Stats
1/15/2009
(Contributed by Coach C.J. Villegas)
The Coleman Bluecats were able to pick up a big win
Tuesday night, when they traveled to Early and beat the
Longhorns 60-54. The win “evens” the Bluecats record to
2-2 in district play. “We were very excited to win the
ball game against Early, especially in Early. The road
games in this district are going to be really tough.
You have to come in and play all four quarters, no
matter who you are playing or where you are playing. I
told the guys, we have to go over there and play four
complete quarters of “good” basketball.” The game was
evenly matched throughout the contest, as both teams
traded leads throughout the game. “Our three senior
guards: Dalton Deleon, Colton Buzzard, and Glen
Edington led the team Tuesday night in all categories.
Our guards are a very strong point of our team right
now, and I truly believe that the way they play night in
and night out, is going to depend on our team success.
The team’s
focus now turns to San Saba (Fri. 16th) and
Comanche next Tuesday, to finish the first half of
District play. The Bluecats will be OPEN on Jan. 23rd.
“We were very fortunate to have open the last game of
district. I think that is going to better prepare us
for the 2nd half of district play. San Saba
is a very young team, which has talent. We cannot look
past any team in this district.”

Coleman
hosted the Brady Bulldogs in their third contest of
district play. Brady was able to hold off the Bluecats
by a final score of 59-51. The loss drops the Bluecats
to 10-10 overall and 1-2 in district play. The Bluecats
will travel to Early on Tuesday, January 13 and then
will host San Saba on Friday, January 16. “We did a very
good job of fighting and not getting down when we were
down by more than 20 pts. in the 4th quarter. Our guys
did a great job of finding a way to get back into the
game. We were able to get within 6 pts. in the final
minute of the game.” The Bluecats were led by Senior
Guard Dalton Deleon who led all scorers with 32 points.
“Dalton scored 20 points in the 4th quarter alone and
ended the game with 32. Also, I would like to cite the
play of Glen Edington and Jamal Agbor. These two seniors
did a ton of positive things for their team Friday
night. They do a ton of “undercover” work, that does not
get put into the paper. They are two young men, that
will go out and fight no matter what the situation is
and their attitude really carried us, Friday night.”

From
Coach Tracy Dawson: We
chose a bad time to put together our worst shooting game and
a sub-par defensive game, we were unable to adjust to the
officiating, at Bangs Tuesday it was like football and
Friday was like a powder puff game. But we have to be able
to play both ways and adjust. Myself and the players did
not bring our best Friday night and paid the price for not
being intense and focused on the task at hand. We have to
let this game go and get ready for our toughest two games of
district, Tuesday at Early and Friday San Saba at home. We
have the ability to win both games but we have to play
better defense and shoot better than 35% to win.

Coleman Bluecats 37 vs. Bangs
48
1/8/2009
The Coleman Bluecats fell to the Bangs Dragons 37-48
Tuesday night in Bangs. The loss drops the Bluecats to
1-1 in district, but far from accomplishing their main
goal of the season on making the playoffs. Coach C.J.
Villegas says, "Bangs did a great job on the offensive
rebounds. As a team we shot the ball as terribly as we
have all season. Bangs and every other team in the
district are going to be hard to beat at their place,
and its even tougher on us, when we do not make shots."
Senior leader, Colton Buzzard, led the team in all
categories. "We have a long ways to go in this district
race, the good thing is that we will have a shot at
playing each opponent twice in district."
The Bluecats will be in town on Friday, and will host
the Brady Bulldogs. "Brady started off district at 2-0.
They are a very good team, that has proven to be
successful in the last couple of years playing a couple
of playoff games. They return a strong nucleus of that
team from last year. They have a point guard and a 6'7"
post, that are a very active and a major role on their
team. We will have to do our best to keep those two from
hurting us. They are a very talented group."

by Coach Alcorn)
The Coleman JV Bluecats boy’s basketball team traveled
to Bangs last night. The Bluecats fell to the Dragons JV
by a score of 39-29. After getting outscored 14-3 in the
first quarter the Bluecats fought back and were only
down by five going into the 4th quarter, but the
comeback fell short. Kyle Russell had the hot hand
shooting with 15 points, while freshman Logan Owens
added 6. Coach Alcorn added that “This was the hardest
we’ve played and hustled all year. The shots just
weren’t falling tonight, but our kids kept playing
through it and fighting and still had a chance at the
end of the game.” The Bluecats will be at home this
Friday with another district game hosting the Brady
Bulldogs.

Coach C. J.
Villegas said,
“I was very impressed how the guys came out in the 2nd
half and fought. We were down in the 3rd quarter by 7
points. We made a few adjustments defensively which put
ourselves in a position to win the ball game. Also, in
the 4th quarter we went 9 for 11 from the free throw
line. I was glad that we were able to knock down clutch
free throws and walk away with a win. It feels very good
to win the first district ball game. I told the guys
after the game, that every game we play in district is
going to have the same feeling. All the teams in
District 8-AA are going to be tough, and we are going to
have to play smart basketball every game in order for us
to win. Our four senior basketball players: Dalton
Deleon, Glen Edington, Colton Buzzard and Jamal Agbor
all played significant roles in this contest. Trent
Hambright also, did a great job for us defensively.”
The
Coleman Bluecats will resume district play when they
travel to Bangs on January 6. They will play their next
district home game on January 9 against Brady.
"We would like to see another
huge crowd for the Brady game. Thanks to the booster
club for setting the events up for home games."
