TEAM CADE Fundraiser
at CJHS This Week
9/30/2008
Cade Needham and his family visited C.J.H.S. last
Wednesday to kick off this week's events
to raise
money for TEAM CADE! Cade, his brother-Reid, his
dad-Jack, and mom, Lorrie explained juvenile diabetes to
the student body. They explained how the disease effects
children and the procedures that Cade must contend with
due to juvenile diabetes. They inspired the student
body to join with them to raise money for TEAM CADE to
help fund research to find a cure for the
disease. Cade and his family will be walking October
4th in Austin for a cure.
TEAM CADE kicked off this
week at CJHS with a "Pumpkin Toss" fundraiser. The
students paid for a small pumpkin and during their
homeroom they "tossed" the pumpkin. The event was a huge
success raising money for TEAM CADE while giving the
students an opportunity to have a good time! Pictured
along with Cade and his mom, Lorrie Needham are the
winners of the event.

Statement by Meagan
Ogden, 2007-08 Miss Coleman County
9/30/2008
Last October Meagan Ogden was chosen Miss Coleman County
for 2007-2008 at the annual Fiesta del la Paloma.
Following is her statement:
Wow! What
a year it has been! This weekend I will pass down my
crown to the next Miss Coleman County, and my reign will
come to an end. In this last week of wearing the crown,
I reflect on the past year and what a joy and honor it
has been to represent Coleman County.
Ever since I was a little girl I always looked up to and
admired the “princesses” each year at the Fiesta. I am
so thankful that I had the opportunity to discover what
it is really all about.
During my reign, I have experienced the pleasure of
becoming very involved in our community by representing
Coleman County at various community-wide events. I
participated in the Christmas and rodeo parades in both
Coleman and Brownwood. I helped out at the
Sesquicentennial birthday party and the annual Dove
Fest. This week, Mary Griffis and I were interviewed for
the Pat Attebery Show in San Angelo.
I would
like to thank all of Coleman County for your great
support. My reign as Miss Coleman County has truly
taught me about leadership and what it really means to
“give back” to your community. I have lived in Coleman
all my life, and I am so proud to call it my hometown.
Once again, I’d like to thank the Chamber and Coleman
County for this wonderful opportunity.

Tribute to Coleman
Native, Playwright Tom Jones
9/30/2008
Coleman Heritage, Arts & Preservation Society will host
a dinner and tribute to Coleman native and Broadway
Playwright, Tom Jones, on Friday, October 10th, at the
Coleman school cafeteria and auditorium, beginning at
5:30 p.m. Tickets for this event are available at the
Chamber of Commerce office. Tickets are $20 for the
dinner and musical tribute, or $10 for the musical
portion only. All ticket sales must be in advance , no
ticket sales at the door. Tickets must be purchased by
Monday, October 6th. The musical tribute will be
performed by several local vocalist, narrated by Coleman
native, Morris Williams, and Ann Hargett will accompany
them at the piano.
Tom Jones
and his writing partner Harvey Schmidt are the longest
running playwrights in Broadway history. They have an
extensive body of work in musical collaboration that
spans over 50 years and includes the play, "The
Fantasticks", which began its run Off-Broadway at the
Sullivan Street Theater (it's still there!) on May 3,
1960. The personal and professional
association between Tom and Harvey began at the
University of Texas in 1950 with a musical revue for
which Tom wrote comedy sketches and Harvey served as
musical director. After graduating from college and
before relocating in New York, they continued their
collaboration, sending music and lyrics between bases
while both served in the army. Once in New York,
Harvey worked as a graphic artist for NBC Television
then as an ilustrator for Life, Harper's Bazaar, Sports
Illustrated, and Fortune. Tom taught, conducted
workshops and endeavored to become an established
director. Following "The Fantasticks", they wrote
"110 in the Shade", their first Broadway show. Opening
in 1963, this musical version of "The Rainmaker" boasted
glorious score that was especially singled out by the
critics. Three years later, "I Do! I Do!", adapted from
Jan de Hartog's comedy, "The Fourposter", opened with
Mary Martin and Robert Preston appearing in the roles
originally performed by Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn.
In the 1997-98 season, Tom and Harvey appeared
off-Broadway in "The Show Goes On" a new revue based on
their theatre songs, the show extended its run several
times and was subsequently released as a CD. Their
dedication and enthusiasm for their collaboration have
earned them an Obie Award, the 1992 Special Tony for
"The Fantasticks", and the ASCAP-Richard Rodgers Award.
In February of 1999 they were inducted into the Broadway
Hall of Fame, on May 3, 1999, their "stars" were added
to the Off-Broadway Walk of Fame outside the Lucille
Lortel Theatre, and in October 2008, will be honored by
the Kennedy Centre. This promises to be an
exciting evening of good food and entertainment. Please
make plans to join us!

U.S. Representative
Conaway Votes Against Economic Rescue Bill
9/29/2008
Washington, Sep 29 - Monday afternoon, the U.S. House of
Representatives voted on the Emergency Economic
Stabilization Act of 2008, which is designed to provide
the Treasury Department with the authority to purchase
troubled assets on the books of private financial
institutions in an effort to resolve the current
financial crisis. The bill failed by a vote of 205 to
228. After the vote, Congressman Mike Conaway (R-TX)
made the following statement:
“While I know that something must be done to get our
economy back on solid ground, I could not support the
proposal that was brought to the floor today. Such
massive government intervention is not the answer to
working out the problems on Wall Street. We cannot make
it habit to bail out companies when they make bad
decisions, instead of allowing them to learn from their
mistakes the same way that everyone else does – the hard
way. We have the ability to help Wall Street sort out
this crisis, without forcing taxpayers into a ‘bailout’.
I understand the severity of the current situation, and
Congress must stay in Washington as long as it takes to
develop an alternative plan that everyone, including the
American taxpayer, can agree on is best for our
country.”

Santa Anna Seniors
Enjoy Quick Connection to College or Career Info
9/29/2008
SAHS
senior Maria Segura surfs through the internet
researching her college options at the new College &
Career Connection kiosk in the hall at SAHS. The cart,
laptop computer, and career software were purchased with
funds from a Perkins Grant last spring. SAISD Tech
coordinator Becky Loftin configured the wireless access
terminal so that only college and career information is
available at the kiosk. Maria said, “It was different
using the laptop than a regular computer. I wish I had
one next year at college.”
Counselor Montie Guthrie felt having immediate access to
the internet connection was more likely to engage
students than going to a lab. In addition, each month
the kiosk features a different college with items given
away after rotation. ”This is just one of the ways we
are trying to build a ‘college-bound’ culture at SAHS”,
Guthrie said. A college-bound culture is an atmosphere
of pervasive expectations that ALL students will go on
to some form of post-secondary education or training.
Principal David Robinett said, “We put it in the hall so
students could use it quickly if they had a few minutes
of free time—in front of my office.”
SAHS tries to combine the right attitudes with right
actions to develop a college-bound culture. TSTC
instructors in automotive tech, welding, and culinary
arts come to SAHS to make presentations on their
programs. The entire junior class takes a field trip to
Tarleton State University for a tour day each year. SAHS
teachers focus many of their teaching activities at the
junior- and senior-level on early and successful
performance on college tests. In order that seniors are
eligible to take dual-credit college classes via
interactive television at SAHS, the school is a
certified administration site for the THEA
college-readiness test. Along with the belief that every
student can succeed at education or training after high
school, SAISD equips its students with the experiences,
knowledge and skills required to complete college.

Local Lady Says Yes
to Bailout
9/30/2008
Dear editor,
Like most people I was appalled that the government
would “bailout these rich careless businesses; but after
consideration and research I have changed my mind. When
these institutions were deregulated they began lending
money for many things, but most importantly for home
mortgages to people with less than perfect credit. Not
all these people had terrible credit histories, just
less than perfect enough to make their mortgage interest
rate, if fixed, very high and therefore the payments
were out of reach for them. Owning a home is part of the
American dream and these poor practices allowed many
people to buy homes they otherwise could never afford.
What this did for our economy was making it a seller’s
market in the housing market; it raised the prices of
real estate and benefited those that sold their homes.
It also put a huge boost into the housing construction
markets, we saw record new housing starts, this
benefited the regular tax payer and businesses that sold
the supplies. But then the other shoe dropped, as the
economy changed the low flexible mortgages suddenly
began to change to higher and higher payments and these
home owners began to struggle to make those payments,
cutting down on other spending and finally being unable
to make the mortgage payment they found themselves near
or in foreclosure. Now, with so many of these over
priced homes on the market, at reduced prices, it is a
buyer’s market and the rest of us find our own homes
have greatly lost value and there are few houses being
sold.
More importantly as some of these big institutions fail,
regular tax payers are losing money too. People whose
pension plans are invested in them, who have life
insurance with them. It is all one big domino fall. Our
economy could fall into a depression over this and that
affects all of us.
This bailout is more than it appears, it is not just
handing over cash to these people that were so
irresponsible before. It will be heavily regulated
instead. Only part of the money will go to them at a
time, and in exchange the mortgages that otherwise would
be foreclosed on, or are already in foreclosure would be
sold to the government. Both parties are discussing a
moratorium on the foreclosures, so these people losing
their homes would be able to work out new plans to keep
their homes. Less homes would be flooding the market and
prices would stabilize. Also the institutions,
unburdened by failed loans would have funds again to
lend to new home buyers and so our homes would again
increase in value, and new home starts could increase
again; all of these loans would be regulated and so no
more loans with changing interest rates for poor credit
risks would be made. These types of loans can go to
people with good credit to give them even lower interest
rates.
I have also learned, from the Abilene Reporter-News that
initially only $250 billion would be given out, then
$100 billion more, if the president thought it
necessary; finally the last $350 billion, with a
separate certification would be released subject to a
congressional resolution of disapproval. In other words
this money would be given out in parts, depending on
need and how it impacted our markets.
Yes, it is a lot of money, but in effect even though it
is going to big companies to rescue them from going
under, it is a big injection into our economy that will
raise existing home prices that are for sale by making
more buyers appear; because unburdened by all the failed
loans that were bought by the government, the money they
get for them can be loaned out to people with good
credit. Small businesses have also been affected by
this, these are tax payers with employees, people would,
and have been, losing their jobs. Investments for
pension plans would not be lost so people’s retirement
would not be ruined. Other stocks would take a positive
response and begin rising; this would do a great deal to
improving our rapidly failing economy.
So, after doing some reading and listening I have done a
complete turnaround. I plan to call my representative
and both senators to let them know how I feel. I hope
you will do the same.

Preservation
Specialist Begins Work on Courthouse Plans
9/25/2008
Thursday, September 25, 2008 marks the date for work
beginning on the Master Plan to be done by ARCHITEXAS
for Coleman County's possible reconstruction of the
courthouse. Devlin DuVall, pictured below, is the
Preservation Specialist that works
out of the Austin branch of the ARCHITEXAS firm. Her
goal is to complete the Master Plan in 4 months so it
can then be reviewed by the Texas Historical Commission.
DuVall said, "The original building is there, but
hidden, so we will find a way to uncover it and return
it to its former glory." She spoke about the Hills
County courthouse that burned to the ground in 1993.
Larry Irsik, of ArchiTexas, actually went through the
rubble piece by piece for clues about the building. The
courthouse was reconstructed from photographs and those
clues.
See it at:
http://www.co.hill.tx.us/ips/cms . Another
courthouse the company reconstructed was the Bosque
County Courthouse (
http://www.bosquecounty.us/ ) which was
changed in the 1930's by the W.P.A.. They had to
reconstruct the roof, the tower, and the corner turrets
from photographs of their original structure. DuVall
stated that no two projects are ever the same, which
makes her job very interesting.
Today
DuVall is beginning a condition assessment on the
exterior and the interior of the building. She will even
look at the roof, the basement, and any crawl space that
may be there, to assess the building material types and
condition of them. She said that sometimes there are
layers upon layers, and she is looking for the original
fabric of the building. The courthouse was dedicated
with its changes in 1952, so there have probably been
several "layers" of roofing, flooring, etc. since then.
In October, a team of four will come to Coleman to
measure the building and will draw up beginning plans to
use with their computer program (C.A.D. - Computer Aided
Design) to complete the Master Plan. The Master Plan
that will be done for Coleman County is a little
different than most. Coleman County has asked for the
ARCHITEXAS firm to do a County Facilities Plan on how
Coleman County's facilities can grow in the years to
come. They will interview all county departments asking
about their current and projected needs for storage and
staff. The end-result should be a 30-year planning tool
that County government officials can use to create a
priority list of needs to help them function more
efficiently in the long term.(
http://www.architexas.com/portfolio/courthouses.html
is a link to the firm's website.)
Devlin DuVall is one of many people who will be working
on our Courthouse Project, but may be one of the most
important. Her work is the beginning of what could turn
out to be a great asset to our community.
Colemannews.com will keep you updated on the progress
during the coming months.
Texas Gardening 101
9/24/2008
By Ernie Yates
A year or so ago I briefly describe the “zip lock” bag
method of propagation of cuttings and suggested it as an
inexpensive and effective method. With fall coming on I
like to take cuttings now for rooting in the house
during winter using this method. I recently saw an
article by Mike Shoup that describes the method very
well when used on roses but works great on a variety of
cuttings. I have provided the following excerpts from
his article for your consideration.
You will only need: one-gallon size zip-lock bags,
all-purpose potting soil (not coarse screen), perlite,
rooting hormone (optional). As a collector, grower and
distributor of many old, rare or unnamed varieties of
roses, I have been exposed to dozens of methods of
rooting cuttings that homeowners and nurserymen have
invented in order to duplicate their roses. They range
from large greenhouses with automated mist systems to a
simple upside-down mason jar. Ours is one of the best
methods, and, ironically one the easiest.
To start, fill the bottom of the bag with 2 inches of
moist potting soil and coarse perlite, mixed in a
one-to-one ratio. Perlite acts as an aerator, preventing
the potting soil from compacting and helping to avoid
over-saturation. Air is a very important component of
successful root formation. Create holes (1/4-inch wide)
in each bottom corner of the bag to allow excess water
to drain. Water is added only to create a moist, not
wet, media. Properly moist media will NOT drip if
squeezed in your fist. (The greatest percentage of
rooting failure I have seen has always been due to
water-soaked media.) You can place up to ten 3-inch
cuttings (cuttings taken from stems that have just
bloomed are best) in each bag. Stem cuttings that are 3
to 4 inches long containing 2 to3 leaves usually root
well. Remove only the bottom leaf to allow the stem to
easily enter the media. You can dip your cuttings into
rooting hormone containing IBA to aid in the speed and
percentage of rooting. Most cuttings will still root
without it and remember, rose cuttings have a short
storage life. They can be refrigerated in moist paper
towels, wrapped in plastic, and preserved for 5 to 6
days without affecting rooting. However, if left in open
air, the cuttings will desiccate within hours, so
"plant" them in their bag as soon as possible.
Placement of the bag is important while roots are
developing. Direct sunlight can cook the un-rooted
plants in the sealed bag. Too little light won't provide
the energy the cuttings need to form roots. I have found
that a northeast- or northwest-facing windowsill offers
excellent light for rooting. East- or west-facing
windows are good as well, as long as some relief from
the direct sun is offered. Optimum temperatures for
rooting are from 55 to 85 F. To maintain the 100 percent
humidity that the bag environment provides, you may need
to add up to two tablespoons of water every third or
fourth day. Condensation on the bag's inside walls is a
good sign that this "terrarium environment" is being
maintained. You can actually see roots emerging and,
later, touching the bag's sides in 3 to 5 weeks. In 5 to
7 weeks, the bag can be opened from the top to start
weaning the cuttings from their 100 percent humid
environment. You will need to water more often as the
newly rooted cuttings acclimate. In 10 to 18 weeks,
rooted cuttings can be planted into small pots with
regular potting soil or into protected areas of the
garden.
This method of rooting works with many other types of
plants as well and I have found that some cuttings
without leaves or even dormant hardwood cuttings will
root, but at a lower percentage and at a slower pace. So
when you want to get a start of that rose you always
wanted, yet have failed repeatedly, remember, success is
in the bag!

Rose Emporium, a Texas nursery dedicated to the

Tools of the Trade for Rose Rustling according to Joe
Cooper of Peaceful Habitations at Boerne:
1. Good sharp clippers,
2. Gallon-sized zip-lock bags
3. Paper towels,
4. A pencil,
5. 3 x 5 cards for identification,
6. I recommend a notebook to keep records of where and
when you found the rose, and
When you take cuttings, be sure to label them, using the
pencil and 3x5 cards mentioned above. Use a pencil
rather than a pen so the writing will not fade and run.
There is a lot of information on the Texas Rose
Rustler’s page on how to make cuttings.

SCAM ALERT
9/24/2008
(contributed)
The Coleman Police Department would like to remind
citizens to be on the alert for scams. Presently most
scams are done on the telephone, but recent cases reveal
that scams are, also, done over the internet. Most
victims are elderly citizens who seem to be the targets
of most scam artist, possibly because the retired people
are at home during the day to answer their telephones.
This past
week a Coleman woman was scammed out of $ 3,039.00 by a
man claiming to be with the Alberta ( Canada ) Police
Force. Alberta is a state or province, not a city or
town. The scammer stated that the victim had won one
million dollars, but the Internal Revenue Service would
be withholding $ 400,000 for taxes and she would receive
the balance of $ 600,000 if she sent the handling fee of
$ 2,900 by Western Union ( the wire transfer cost $ 139
). The scammer asked the victim for the name of one of
her family members, and told her to send the wire
transfer in her family members name to Calgary, Alberta,
Canada. The money was collected after someone forged the
name of the family member on the money receipt.
Please be
cautious when dealing with people who tell you that you
have won a lottery, jackpot, or sweepstakes. Remember if
the contest is legitimate, you are NOT REQUIRED TO SEND
them ANY MONEY prior to receiving your prize. All taxes
and fees will be deducted from the prize money.
Again, Please be extremely careful when someone is
asking you to send your money to them. If you have any
doubts or questions, contact your local law enforcement
and have the caller, or scammer, checked out.
CISD Foundation
Donates Funds to Art Program
9/23/2008
Alice Hemphill of the Coleman ISD Foundation presented a
check for $300 to Dana Dawson, new Art teacher for the
Coleman schools, and Paula Ringo, principal of Coleman
Jr High, on Tuesday morning. Dana was excited to receive
the funds and plans to use it to purchase clay for one
of her many art projects. She already has had the
students doing "Texture Drawings" and Japanese "Notan"
with a focus on Art Element of Space (Negative and
Positive).
Below is a picture of Mr. Richard Holloway, principal of
Coleman High School, done by a class of Mrs. Dawson's.
They each had one small square to complete and color,
then the squares were placed together to create the
drawing. Mrs. Dawson had previously requested items to
use in her classes, but will have a new list out
shortly. She said she needs wire cutters this week, as
well as mats (for framing) and watercolor paint sets for
future projects. She really appreciates the great
response from the "Wish List" and wants to thank the
community for their support. (A reminder that the
Coleman ISD Foundation does accept donations for the
Scholarship Fund and for other projects the Foundation
supports.)

"Flower Show"
The following is an excerpt from the Flower Show
Schedule, as written by co-chairmen Jane Padgitt and Nan
Markland:
“In 1858, Coleman County became an officially recognized
county in the State of Texas. In this year of 2008, we
celebrate 150 years of history and the characters that
gave Coleman County such a rich heritage. We feel that a
tribute to pioneer women, in whatever role they played,
is appropriate during the Sesquicentennial Celebration.
Mabel Day and Martha Morris were our direct ancestors
and we are pleased to include them. The hardships of
prairie life and the isolation of the era also brought
wonderful lasting friendships, some that have endured a
hundred years. Flora and fauna of the 1850’s have also
remained and as you will see, new and perhaps better
ones have evolved. Please enjoy our show ‘Westward the
Women’ ”.
The show is scheduled for Saturday, October 4, 2008,
open to the public from 12 noon until 4:00 p.m. The
location of the show will be the Miller Building on the
Courthouse Square. While enjoying all the festivities
and activities offered on that day during the Fiesta de
la Paloma, the Town and Country Garden Club cordially
invites you to return to downtown Coleman to see this
extraordinary show.

"Ridin' the Wind"
9/22/2008
On July 5th, a tragic airplane accident took the life of
B.J. Carnes, a former Brownwood Fireman. The day before
his burial, Doug Burks, of Coleman, wrote a song about
B.J.'s life. The song is titled "Ridin' the Wind." Doug
says, "God gave me the words, I just put them down on
paper." He said the words just starting coming to him
and he knew he'd better start writing. In speaking to
Jenny Carnes, B.J.'s widow, she said the song is a great
tribute to her husband and she is honored to have this
song as an acknowledgment of his life and how he helped
people. She said Doug is talented and the song is
"wonderful." She stated, "Words can't say how I feel."
"Ridin' the Wind" has not been published yet; however,
all proceeds of its sale will go to the Brownwood Fire
Department and the B.J. Carnes Scholarship Fund. The
artwork for the cover has been completed, but monies for
publishing are still being gathered. If you would like
to help in this endeavor, please call 625-4245. Doug
Burks would like to thank Troy Stark of Comanche, a
friend of B.J.'s, for donating his time and the
recording studio towards the first edition of the song.

Buddy Found Lucille
9/17/2008 (
Submitted by Vanessa Molina
)
I witnessed the sweetest thing ever on
Wednesday afternoon. Just as I was about to leave I
found a dog outside in the parking lot. I hated to leave
him out in the rain, also there was a skunk outside. So,
I brought him inside our resident courtyard here at
Holiday Hill in hopes that we could find his owners.
After speaking with the vet and his owners, we
discovered that he had came up here to visit his aunt
Lucille Martin. He had left his home to come visit his
beloved Aunt Lucille Martin. It was absolutely the most
precious moment I have ever seen. Lucille came out to
greet Buddy and WOW they were inseparable. He loved and
hugged on her as if there was no tomorrow, it was just
enough to melt our hearts and too precious to keep to
ourselves. We get all kinds of visitors out here with
their pets, but you hardly ever hear of the pet coming
out here to visit old family members. Truly a heart
touching moment that needed to be shared with everyone!

Attention Farm
Producers - Buy-In Registration Deadline is Today
9/16/2008
Producers can establish
2008 eligibility for the new disaster assistance
programs by paying a fee as required by the Food,
Conservation and Energy Act of 2008 (the 2008 Farm
Bill).
Ordinarily producers who wish to participate in the new
disaster programs would need crop insurance or
non-insured crop disaster assistance (NAP) coverage on
all farms in all counties in which they have an
interest. Since the 2008 Farm Bill was enacted after the
application periods had closed for those programs,
producers who did not have NAP or crop insurance
coverage could not comply with this
requirement in order to be eligible. However, the Farm
Bill authorizes a waiver that allows producers to pay a
fee, called a "buy-in" fee, to be eligible for the new
disaster assistance programs.
The buy-in fee is due no
later than September 16, 2008,
90 days after the date of enactment, as required by the
2008 Act. Payment of the applicable fees will allow the
producer to be eligible for financial assistance under
the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Program (SURE),
Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP), Emergency
Assistance for Livestock, Honey Bees, and Farm-raised
Fish (ELAP) and the Tree Assistance Program (TAP). Those
who miss this opportunity will not be eligible for 2008
disaster assistance. Producers are also reminded that
the payment of the applicable buy-in fee does not
provide the producer crop insurance or NAP coverage for
the 2008 crop year; it only affords eligibility for the
disaster programs.
The determination of buy-in fees will be based on the
insurability or NAP eligibility of the crop on the sales
closing deadline. Therefore, subsequent crops must have
coverage or have the buy-in fee collected in order for
the producer to maintain SURE eligibility. If the
producer listed all crops, including the subsequent
crops, on the summary of coverage then the producer is
considered to have coverage, regardless of the indemnity
election made by the producer. If all crops, including
subsequent crops, are not listed on the summary of
coverage the producer is required to pay the buy-in fee
in order to be eligible for SURE.
Please contact the Coleman County Farm Service Agency at
118 North Concho Street in Coleman or call 325-625-4197
extension #2 for more information.
Kid's Day at the

the Museum for the Museum's Sesquicentennial Christmas
Celebration in December and will become part of the
Museum's permanent collections. Each child should wear
old clothes or bring a painting shirt, they will be
using acrylic paints.
A special "Children of Coleman County" tree will be
included in the Christmas exhibit at the Museum during
December which will include all the ornaments painted by
the children during the Kid's Day. We want each child to
be included in the history of Coleman County. Remember,
the child must reside in Coleman County to be included
in the exhibit. If you have questions contact Kathy
Andrews at 625-2142.
Grand Central Station
– Coleman ISD
9/17/2008
Coleman Elementary
The GCS (Grand Central Station) Program was adopted in
the Elementary to help students become successful,
independent learners in the least restrictive
environment. Tuesday thru Friday GCS teachers go into
classrooms to assist students that might have
difficulties in getting work completed. Students also
may go to the GCS room to have a lesson re-taught , for
extended time, oral testing, etc. GCS also provides
materials for classroom teachers to assist in learning
such as, learning games, flash cards, and Study Hall
(computer generated study game) which are made on
Mondays by GCS teachers. Lap top computers are available
to classes on a sign up availability to be used in the
class or in the GCS room. The goal of GCS is to assist
students and teachers in a multitude of learning tools,
manipulatives, and learning strategies and for students
to be able to stay in the regular classroom working
successfully as much as possible.
Coleman Junior High
Grand Central Station is designed to be an ultimate
learning lab for maximizing the potential of struggling
students. The foundation of the program is its proactive
approach made possible by the collaboration among all
teachers.
We help students with daily assignments and projects, as
well as studying for upcoming tests. We also begin
tracking grades on a weekly basis to help students keep
on top of his or her grades. If students continue to
fail we provide after school services for them. If they
still continue to struggle we will pull them out for one
class period to provide additional assistance for them.
Students may go to Grand Central Station to have a
lesson re-taught, for extended time, oral testing
and with assignments. The students can use our Study
Hall program also.
We are offering assistance to students so they can be
successful in their academics.
Coleman High School
GCS, or Grand Central Station, was implemented at the
Coleman High School campus in October of 2006. After
attending instructional workshops and observing working
labs, GCS has become an integral part of the learning of
students at CHS.
The heart of the GCS program comes from Monday meetings.
Every Monday, core teachers (English, Math, Social
Studies, Science and Health) meet with the GCS staff and
bring their lesson plans. These assignments, projects
and tests are posted on a color coded Lesson Plan Board
to allow students and teachers to see at a glance what
is due for the week. This coordination of subject areas
helps prevent “test overload”. At these meetings,
teachers also discuss progress of students who access
the lab, allowing the GCS staff to make students aware
of their weekly progress. Coordination and cooperation
from all subject areas as well as a tracking system
allows the students to improve their academic success.
One program that GCS uses on a daily basis is the Study
Hall program. This computer program takes data that is
input by the GCS staff from textbooks and transforms it
into vocabulary words for each subject. These key words
can be made into various worksheets, flash cards and
even a game to keep up with today’s fast paced society.
The lab also utilizes other technology to assess how
students learn best.
The lab is open for students to come after receiving
direct instruction from the classroom teacher. This
allows lessons to be re-taught or for tests to be orally
administered if the student needs this service. The
students are also assisted with organizational tasks,
such as projects and notebooks. Computers are also
available for research and assignments.
Grand Central Station is definitely a work in progress.
The way students are educated must adapt to the needs of
the students. The ultimate goal of GCS is to be a
proactive way to develop independent learners to become
successful, productive members of society.

FREE SPAY/NEUTER EVENT
GREAT SUCCESS
9/16/2008
The spay/neuter event was a wonderful success. We
appreciate so much that people will line up and
patiently wait for these vouchers. To accommodate those
who showed up for cats, we increased the number of cats
to 50 But we were nevertheless out of free vouchers in
just a matter of a couple of hours on Friday. Isn’t it
great to know that eighty animals (50 cats and 30 dogs)
will not be breeding now?! Just think of how many fewer
cats and kittens and dogs and puppies that means for
Coleman County.
However, we will never have a shortage. Cats like Trio
will always be looking for a good home. And we have a
constant supply of wonderful dogs too. None of
this would be possible without your kind support through
your membership, donations, and patronage of our thrift
stores. We also thank the local foundations for
responding to the Humane Society’s requests for grants
to help with these free events. Coleman County
Foundation gave $2,500 this year to help with our two
free events, and all of that has been spent on cats. In
addition, the Brownwood humane society has shared part
of the Animal Friendly grant they have received from the
State. Our Humane Society works closely with the Corinne
T. Smith Animal Center in Brownwood and are grateful
that their Executive Director, Cheryl Campbell, writes
these State grants to include help for other counties,
including Coleman County. The money received from the
Animal Friendly grant funds the free vouchers for dogs.
We will see you at the thrift store. The year-round
discounted vouchers are always available. Plus, our
membership drive starts at Fiesta. Look for our booth at
the southwest corner of the Exposition building. We will
have dogs, cats and membership forms!
Courtney Brown of Coleman exhibited the Grand Champion
and Reserve Grand Champion rabbit meat pens at the
West Texas Fair on September 13, 2008. Courtney raised
these rabbits.
Local Chamber Offers
Unique Benefit for Members
9/16/2008
The Coleman Chamber of Commerce is one of 16 chambers of
commerce in the region offering a unique benefit to
business members. In January of this year the Texas
Midwest Chamber Cooperative was launched. The
Cooperative offers a way for businesses in the region to
access discounted group healthcare plans for employees.
The only way a business can join the Cooperative and
have access to the discounted health insurance is
through membership in a participating chamber of
commerce.
The Texas Midwest Chamber Cooperative is the first
cooperative of its kind in Texas, bring together
multiple chambers to serve rural communities. The
innovative collaboration takes advantage of new state
legislation allowing businesses to form Health Group
Cooperatives. Through cooperatives, business members are
able to join together to gain access to discounted
premiums and flexible plan designs typically only
available for large employers. As member of their local
Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Midwest Chamber
Cooperative, businesses will have better access to
affordable health plan benefits for their employees.
Participating businesses may save as much as 40 percent.
The Texas Midwest Chamber Cooperative is the result of
the partnership between the Texas Midwest Community
Network and the Hendrick Health System, a supporter and
partner of the Texas Midwest Community Network and an
owner of the FirstCare Health Plans. For more
information contact the chamber of commerce or go to

Local Church to Have
Flood Bucket Program at Fiesta
9/16/2008 (contributed)
With the 2008 hurricane
season in progress, many disaster relief organizations
are calling for our donations. It is important for
us to give generously but wisely. One certain way is to
donate to proven, long existing groups.
One of these is UMCOR, United Methodist Committee On
Relief. This relief organization serves all of the US
and internationally. Teams are on cite now in the Gulf
Coast, Florida, and Haiti. The warehouse which packs and
distributes many types of survival and cleanup supplies
is located in Baldwin, LA .
Hurricane Gustav plowed right over them but by God's
grace did little damage. Teams are there now in full
swing. But they were already short of supplies and so
need our donations. Each flood bucket filled with
supplies for a household to cleanup costs $55.
Trinity United Methodist Church
is going to have a booth at the Fiesta displaying the
Flood Bucket program and info will be available on how

Update on "Team Cade"
9/15/2008
We would like to thank everyone who has donated to Team
Cade, in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes. So far we have
raised $1555, with three weeks
to go until the walk. We set a goal of $3000 this year,
so we are halfway there. The money we raise for this
walk goes directly toward research dedicated to finding
a cure for juvenile, or type I diabetes. Cade has had
this disease for just over a year. If you would like to
help us reach our goal, you can send your checks (made
out to JDRF) to the address listed below, or you can
donate online. Go to www.jdrf.org, click on donate (in
the Walk section), then do a search for Cade Needham.
We are walking on October 4 at the Dell Diamond
in Austin. Again, thank
you to everyone for your support! The Needhams,
510 Dallas, Coleman, TX 76834.

WEST TEXAS REHABILITATION
CENTER’S 2008
ROUND-UP SPECIAL EVENT
9/15/2008
It’s time
to mark your calendar for the West Texas Rehabilitation
Center’s Round-Up for Rehab Special Event Auction. On
Wednesday, September 17th, the annual fundraiser will be
hosted by the Edington family at the Coleman Livestock
Auction barn. Since its inception in 1960, Round-Up for
Rehab has provided more than $10 million in donations to
helping those who have turned to the Center for assistance and the Coleman area
has played an important part each year. As a private,
non-profit organization, the Rehab is dedicated to
providing outpatient care annually to over 23,000
children and adults, regardless of their financial
circumstances. Numerous Coleman residents have used and
continue to utilize the REHAB’s services for improving
the quality of their lives.
The Coleman sale is one of nine special Round-Up for
Rehab auctions and promises to provide a unique, fun
experience. Everyone is invited to come out to the
auction barn on September 17th and enjoy a meal of
beans, cornbread and cobbler prepared by the Rehab’s own
Chuckwagon. The auction kicks-off at a new
earlier time, 11:00 am,
with items of interest for all. Livestock, Ag-related
and general merchandise, crafts and baked goods will be
offered with a round of lively, friendly bidding. (Pictured are CHS Student Council
Members from 2007 serving the Chuckwagon meal during
last year's auction.)
Local chairmen and Rehab friends heading up the 2008
Coleman County Round-Up program are Bobbie Edington, Bob
& Sylvia Edington, Mike Edington, Maureen Hickman, Wayne
McClure, Jay Davis, Tommy Sloan, Heath & Danielle
Hemphill, Randy & Kathy Turner, and Andrew Young. Others
with key roles in this year’s program are general
chairmen Mike Alexander and Randy Carson of Abilene,
Jody Frey of San Angelo and Bob Helmers of Christoval.
Honorary Round-Up chairman for the fourth consecutive
year is legendary cowboy singer/poet Red Steagall. They
all join with other volunteers to ask the people of West
Texas to help Rehab meet the outpatient rehabilitation
needs of all who turn to the Center for assistance in
overcoming the disabling effects of illness or injury.
WTRC President Woody Gilliland extends a special
invitation to everyone in the Ag industry to attend one
of the sales, donate cash or animals to the project, or
notify Rehab of intent to have an auction house
cut a check to WTRC for animals sold later in the year.
“For the hundreds
of children and adults we serve regardless of financial
status, I thank everyone for supporting this critical
fundraising program,” said Gilliland.
Corporate underwriters for this year’s Round-Up for
Rehab include Heartland Alliance of America, Farm and
Ranch Healthcare Inc., Lone Star Beef, Group IV
Member-Owned Electric Cooperatives, Family Power Sports,
Strongpoint/Pied Piper Pet & Wildlife, and Wrangler.

time and become a part of the Rehab’s philosophy of
“neighbor-helping neighbor.” For more information about

reminiscing. (The arcade is a non-alcoholic facility.)
The dinner will be provided by Big O's BBQ and consists
of brisket, sausage, turkey, potato salad, beans and all
the trimmings. Tea will be provided. The meal will cost
$7.00 per plate, so if you have not notified Mickey on

Santa Anna EDC Discuss
Purchase of Sante Fe Depot
9/15/2008 (Submitted by: Judy
Meister)
The Santa Anna Economic Development Corporation met for
a special meeting on Thursday,
September 11th to discuss the possibility of purchasing
back the town’s old train station. The SAEDC
has proposed the purchase in order to move the station
downtown Santa Anna so that it may encompass a Museum
and Visitor’s Center. Considerations for the project
included the purchase of the building from current owner
Clint McEwin of Santa Anna, cost of moving the station
and renovation.
The group also decided to begin research in acquiring
available grants that could help alleviate some of the
expenditures incurred for this type of project.
The Sante Fe Depot was closed in 1969, servicing the
community for more than 80 years. It was described by
some as the hub of the community. At a time when
traveling distances by train was most prevalent, people
would gather at the depot anticipating the arrival or
departure of the huge iron convoy of passenger and box
cars.
The SAEDC feels that by obtaining, restoring and
furnishing the building with cherished historical
artifacts, it will benefit the community as well as
travelers passing through and serve fondly as a reminder
of those times gone by. Photographed at

The gas price in Coleman at 9:00am Saturday, at
four different locations in town, was $3.79 a gallon.
Word got around Friday of a huge increase causing
lines at all gas stations in town. See pictures
below.
With Hurricane Ike striking several refineries Saturday
morning, many believe we will see higher prices soon.
1970's? No, but Long
Gas Lines Anyway in Coleman
9/12/2008
Rumors of much higher gas prices spread like wildfire
through Coleman Friday morning causing long lines at gas
stations and traffic problems for local police.
At all 8
convenience stores and gas stations which serve Coleman,
there were long lines of cars, pickups and motorcycles.
We witnessed over 20 cars waiting in line at the 7-11
store at the corner of Commercial and Walnut.
Coleman
police were directing traffic at the Allsups store on
North Neches Street on the north side of
town as cars waiting in line posed a traffic hazard to
vehicles driving into Coleman on Highway 84.
The Buddy's convenience store on North Neches had placed
brown paper bags over the pump handles by 11:00am and
discontinued selling gas.
In trying to confirm whether the price was actually
going to increase a dollar or more this afternoon, two
store managers said they had been authorized to increase
their price 10 cents this afternoon. They had heard the
rumors of much higher increases but their superiors had
not confirmed prices much higher.
Whether it's fact or much rumor spreading through our
small town, one thing is certain. A large number of
people took it as fact and the gas lines are long as of
the noon hour.

There are many talented and creative people in Coleman
County; both young and old. It is almost time for the
Exhibits competition
and we want you to participate! In the next few weeks
the rules and regulations governing entries of the
exhibits will be in the newspaper, but I'm sure there
will be many who don't read through those rules and
regulations because there are so many and they've read
them before. Well this year there are some changes, so
we thought we would help you out by telling you about
the various changes. That way when you read the rules
and regulations you can concentrate on the areas most
pertinent to your handiwork.

photography competition is for amateurs only. Pictures

undecorated matte board, poster board, or other similar

Also new this year is a third place cash prize

We are excited about the changes made to the Exhibits
and are hoping that you will be too. Additionally, to
make things easier we are putting a copy of the entry
form into the newspaper so that you can fill it out and
bring it with you when entering your item. Forms will
also be available at the Extension Office, County
Courthouse and the Chamber of Commerce. We would love to
have so many entries that we run out of room. Help us

ART SEASON OPENER WITH
B. LANCTON
9/8/2008
The
Fine Arts League of Coleman County will open its “Art
year” on September 18, with a program by Fredericksburg
artist, B. Lancton. B graduated Stephen F Austin with a
BFA and a teaching certificate. She taught High School
art upon graduating. After discovering the pay for a
teacher was not adequate, she became a draftsman in the
oil and gas industry for the next 15 years. She drafted
maps by hand, making slides for “show and tell”. Lancton
says, “ it was fun and interesting until the work was
taken over by the Computer generation many years later.
After losing interest in that field, I went to nursing
school and became an RN and worked at the Texas Medical
Center in Houston until 2003. During the 15 years or so,
I did not pick up a drawing pencil or paintbrush.”
At age 50, B decided it was time to slow down, thus the
move to Fredericksburg. She went to work in
a physician’s office which allowed her time to return to
her passion of art. Since then, she has dedicated her
free time to painting and has begun to enter shows and
build a portfolio. In the 2007 Juried Art Show in
Coleman, B’s artwork came to the forefront. She had 3
paintings juried in with her watercolor painting, “The
Mentor”, receiving the Patron Award. Ms. Lancton also
had a painting “Layin’ Low” juried into the Western
Spirit Show 2008 in Cheyenne, Wyo. During her workshop
attendance the past two years in Colorado, B and 3 other
artists formed a painting group, “The Dutch Creek Four”.
The four of them are planning a show for 2011!!
Lancton hopes to return to teaching art at some point
with the goal of providing art to children in her
curriculum and possibly afterschool and weekend classes.
It is her hope to retire from the medical profession and
to be active again in teaching art “hopefully in the
Coleman area”. The meeting will be held September
18, 6 pm at the First Coleman National Bank Club Room.
Theda Rhea, Vice President of the Art League, encourages
all members to be present as the Fiesta Art Show
registration is just days away. Guests are always
welcome to the program
TEEA Clubs Meet
Together
9/8/2008
The two Texas Extension Education Association clubs in
Coleman County met for a joint presentation. There were
about 20 people present, 10 from the Gouldbusk
Homemaker's Club and 10 from Coleman's Good Neighbor
Club. Our Program was about the many hats we wear and
many present told about the various roles they had
filled during their long and productive lives. Each lady
there had made a hat showing all their accomplishments
and the things most important to their lives. For
most family played a huge role in their individual
stories. It was fun to learn about each other and people
we only know in passing as they belong to our sister
club. The many and
varied accomplishments of our membership highlighted
once again what a dedicated group of women can and do
accomplish. Refreshments were provided by one of the
Good Neighbor Club members. After the program we broke
into our respective clubs and had a short meeting
discussing individual club business. If anyone in the
area is interested in getting together with a group of
active, involved ladies who have fun together while
being productive, we would love to have you join us. The
Gouldbusk Homemaker's Club will meet again on October
9th at 1pm at the Gouldbusk Methodist Church fellowship
hall. Our program will be given by Danella McBrayer and
will be on growing and cooking with herbs. Anyone
interested can talk to Nancy at the extension office and
get all the information they need about either of the 2
clubs. We really love to have new people come and check
us out. So come on and join us for one meeting or for
all. Hope to see you there.
Circle C Cattlewomen
Honor Patsy J. Miller
9/5/2008
Thursday morning, members of the Coleman County Circle C
Cattlewomen's organization met Jeff Miller, grandson of
Patsy Miller, by a Red Bud tree they had planted in her
honor. They presented a monument, with her name
inscribed, to Jeff to be placed in front of the tree.
The tree is in front of the First United Methodist
Church, in which Patsy was raised.
Patsy
Jamison Miller was from Coleman County and moved with
her husband, Bub, to Red Owl, South Dakota in the late
40's. Patsy taught in a one-room schoolhouse near Red
Owl and later became a principal in Sturgis, South
Dakota. (Jeff has fond memories of attending a one-room
school in South Dakota himself.) While in South Dakota
Patsy became a member, and later President, of a
cattlewomen's club. When she and her husband moved back
to Coleman County in 1972, she brought that experience
with her. She founded the Circle C Cowbelles (now Circle
C Cattlewomen) organization in 1974. The organization
has been in continuous service to the community since
that time.
Patsy and Bub ranched in S.D. and their sons, Tom and
John, still ranch there.
Jeff Miller, Tom's son, moved to Coleman County in 1996
to take over the Miller Ranch. While continuing his
family's ranching traditions, Jeff and his wife, Ashlee,
also own "The White Elephant Warehaus" in
Fredericksburg.

this year’s event we’re adopting ‘back to basics of deer
management’ as our theme, and we’re expecting a
standing-room-only audience.” The first day will
feature presentations on ethics, habitat management,
prescribed burning, nutrition and census techniques.
Speakers from the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute

to Ballinger
9/4/2008
Colemannews.com now has a sister internet newspaper 30
miles west.
Ballingernews.com
is online and
serving the residents of Runnels County. "It's a great
fit for us and has already been well received in the
Ballinger community," said Kathy Turner, manager of
Turner Press. The website will be similar to
Colemannews.com, only the layout is different. "We view
Ballinger as a progressive small town and we hope to
fulfill a need. We will do our best to provide a site
for news, weather, sports and other local information
Runnels County can be proud of," Turner said.
Colemannews.com has been
viewed over 76,000 times in the past month by people in
over 40 countries around the world. "It will take time,
but we think
Ballingernews.com
will attract an equally
large following," Turner said. Coleman business Best

Skeet Shoot
Competition Goes Techno
9/4/2008 (By Ken Cunningham)
The 4th Annual Coleman County Dove Festival & Skeet
Shoot will have a new look and feel this year.
Organizers of the annual event have stepped into the
21st century by purchasing the Laser Shot virtual skeet
shooting competition simulator. This unit is completely
electronic and offers life-like simulated shooting
competitions as well as the safety of the participants
and spectators.
With the
high price of ammunition and clay pigeons this year,
local organizers of the Coleman County Dove Festival &
Skeet Shoot invested in a more cost effective means of
entering the competition. Participants will be able to
enter the competition without having the burden of the
high price of shotgun shells. According to organizer
Jody Barr, liability was also a factor in this step
toward a new avenue of sports shooting competition. With
the new Laser Shot simulator the festival will no longer
have to close off any roads for the event or tape off
any areas for safety reasons.
Not only
is the Laser Shot used throughout the United States to
promote safe shooting sports competitions, but it is
also used for hunter’s safety education, marksmanship
competitions, S.W.A.T. and police training, and training
for the military. According to Barr, the younger
generation gets off to a good start with equipment such
as the Laser Shot Simulator as they are able to begin
shooting in a safer environment, which allows more
effective training and coaching.
Two types
of electronic guns are used for the competition, a full
size adult, two-scale trap and skeet gun, which has the
weight, size, and feel of an authentic over-and-under
shotgun, and a youth model, which is shorter and lighter
than a normal shotgun, and just as in real life, one
must lead the target in order to make a direct hit.
Other life-like moving targets are accessible through
the computerized simulator such as dove and ducks. In
addition to its various functions, the unit is mobile,
hence allowing the simulator to be transported to other
planned events.
The skeet shooting competition will be
held during the 4th Annual Coleman County Dove Festival
and Skeet Shoot Competition this Saturday, September 6th
from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Bill Franklin
Center in Coleman. The two-person team entry fee is
$20.00 with a $50.00 jackpot for every five teams.
Practice rounds will be available for purchase as well.

CHS Counselor Attends
Marine Corps Educator's Tour
9/2/2008
(contributed)
Lorene Halfmann, counselor at Coleman High School,
attended the Marine Corps Educator’s Tour in San Diego,
California, the week of August 11-15, 2008. The purpose
of the Educator’s Tour is part of the Marine Corps’
effort to acquaint interested educational leaders with
the role of the Marine Corps in our national defense.
Secondly, it is designed to demonstrate the wide variety
of occupational
and educational training the Marine Corps offers to
young men and women. Mrs. Halfmann and 64 other
educators from throughout Texas and Oklahoma were
provided an extensive tour of the facilities at Marine
Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. They were assigned a
Drill Instructor and spent time witnessing the basic
training of future Marines. In addition, they visited
Marine Corps Air Station Miramar where they toured an
active airfield to see how it conducts flight
operations. The group also spent a day at Camp Pendleton
and observed the Marine Recruits as they undertook field
and rifle training. They were privileged to be
spectators at the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor pin ceremony
at the end of the fifty-four hour Crucible, an intense
fitness and survival exam given to every young recruit
before he becomes a Marine. Mrs. Halfmann and the other
educators were special guests of Brigadier General
Angela Salinas, Commanding General of the Marine Corps
Recruit Depot/Western Recruiting Region, at breakfast on
Friday morning and the impressive graduation ceremony
that followed. The highlight of the trip for Mrs.
Halfmann and the group
was the having lunch with a group of Texas recruits. She
and Shelton Cogdill, a 2008 graduate of Coleman High
School, were able to visit during this time. He is doing
well and was most excited to see a familiar face!
Shelton is currently in basic training in San Diego and
will graduate on Friday morning, September 5, 2008. He
is the son of Laurie and Les Cogdill.

about ten years ago and has awarded over $10,000 to
Mountaineer grads. The Santa Anna Foundation was
established in 1994 to make charitable grants to
community projects—most notably our civic center and
city park-- as well as to give scholarships to graduates
from Panther Creek, Santa Anna, and CAP High schools.
Since 1994 the Foundation has also awarded more than
$10,000 to local students. It is a natural fit for the
two groups to unite in their efforts to support the
growth and prosperity of our community and its youth.

independent public charity, qualifying all donations for
the maximum deduction for charitable contributions under

September Pet Call on Friday and Saturday, September 12
and 13. The emphasis will be on cats. Forty (40) cats
will be eligible for a free spay or neuter voucher.
Fifteen (15) dogs will be accepted for free vouchers
regardless of size. There will be a limit of two pets
per address.
Sign-up for the free voucher will be at the Humane
Society Thrift
Store at 109 West Pecan (across from the Coleman County
State Bank) during thrift store hours: Noon to 6:00 on
Friday, 9 – 2 on Saturday, first come, first served.
This expanded free event is made possible this year by a
grant from the Coleman
County
Foundation.
The Humane Society is fully aware of the problem with
homeless cats and kittens, and we will continue to do
everything we can to help cut down on the numbers by
offering this free spay/neuter voucher in September and
the discounted voucher year-round. We hope everyone will
understand how impossible it is for us to try to rescue
and foster cats. Are you going to come to us to adopt a
cat or kitten? Do you think someone will drive from
Dallas or Austin to adopt one of our cats like they do
our dogs? Are you willing to foster two or three cats or
kittens while we try to find homes for them? There are
no easy solutions. How we wish there were.
We have six beautiful young cats available right now.
Call us if you would like to
adopt. We ask $25 to help us cover the vet work.
