Coleman
Heritage, Arts & Preservation
Society is happy to include Carl
Langford's Lighthouses & Wind
Turbines in our December exhibit at
Heritage Hall at 400 W. College. The

Carl Langford is a resident of Santa
Anna, and is a metal artist working
with found objects. His unique
lighthouses and wind turbines are
constructed from pieces of old farm
implements, car parts, copper pipe
and fittings, weathered and pitted
galvanized metal pipe, rocks, pieces
of old swing sets, and other odd
pieces of iron and metal. Carl
paints each piece and adds railings
and other objects to each piece
making them a one of a kind art
pieces.
Also included in the exhibit are the
"Christmas Ornaments from Texas
Counties". There are 98 handcrafted
ornaments that have been received
thus far. This project was begun by
Morris Williams in 2007 as a
sesquicentennial project for the
Coleman Museum. Each ornament
represents the county in which the
artist lives and each one is truly
unique. The museum is open on
Saturdays 10:00 to 4:00 and
admission is free but donations are
greatly appreciated. During the
"Tour of Homes" on Sunday, December
6th, tickets for the tour are

RRC PRODUCTION STATISTICS AND
ALLOWABLES FOR DECEMBER 2009
11/28/2009
AUSTIN -- The Texas average rig
count as of Nov. 13 was 429,
representing about 41 percent of all
active land rigs in the United
States. In the last 12 months, total
Texas reported production was 347
million barrels of oil and 7.7
trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
Texas natural gas production
represents approximately 29 percent
of total U.S. natural gas demand.
The Commission’s estimated final
production for September 2009 is
28,806,778 barrels of crude oil and
584,996,717 Mcf (thousand cubic
feet) of gas well gas.
The Commission derives final
production numbers by multiplying
the preliminary September 2009
production totals of 26,914,676
barrels of crude oil and 491,016,214
Mcf of gas well gas by a production
adjustment factor of 1.0703 for
crude oil and 1.1914 for gas well
gas. (These production totals do not
include casinghead gas or
condensate.)
Texas natural gas storage reported
to the Commission for October 2009
was 458,359,717 Mcf compared to
318,671,889 Mcf in October 2008. The
November 2009 gas storage estimate
is 470,229,859 Mcf.
The Texas Railroad Commission’s Oil
and Gas Division set initial
December 2009 natural gas production
allowables for prorated fields in
the state to meet market demand of
16,126,289 Mcf (thousand cubic
feet). In setting the initial
December 2009 allowables, the
Commission used historical
production figures from previous
months, producers’ demand forecasts
for the coming month, and adjusted
the figures based on well
capability. These initial allowables
will be adjusted after actual
production for December 2009 is
reported.
MAN ON A MISSION
A
Chronicle & DV/ColemanNews.com
special in the spirit of giving
thanks
11/27/2009
Steve
Vinton grew up not knowing his
grandparents. Unlike many young
people, Steve didn't not know his
grandparents because they passed
away. Instead, he didn't know them
because they spent the majority of
their lives in Africa serving as
missionaries.
Nevertheless, at the age of 16,
Steve's grandparents invited him to
a small village in the Congo. While
visiting his grandparents, he saw
firsthand the impact that
missionaries had on several
underdeveloped villages in the
Congo. While sharing the Christian
gospel, Steve's grandparents
established 627 churches, 160
primary schools, 62 high schools,
several hospitals, and even
community centers.
Steve eventually returned home from
his trip to Africa as a changed
young man. Upon completing high
school, he asked his grandparents if
he could return to Africa to help.
They eagerly welcomed him back to
Africa and put him to work as a
calculus teacher for a year. He
lived in a leaf roofed house with
dirt floors and no electricity or
plumbing. While working as a
missionary, Steve met his wife,
Susan, who served in the Peace Corps
in Africa for several years.
The happy couple eventually returned
to the United States, where they
moved to Washington D.C. and worked
in the international economical
development sector. Steve and Susan
enjoyed their work, but became
frustrated with the cumbersome
nature of their organization. Both
of them missed the hands on approach
to development and began to realize
that they could change more lives
directly with mission work.
With this revelation, Steve and
Susan returned to the Congo, where
they jumped right back into serving
those in need. Unfortunately, the
Congo fell into a terrible civil
war, and Steve and Susan were forced
to migrate to the neighboring East
Africa nation of Tanzania.
While in a small Tanzanian village,
Steve and Susan learned that only 2
of 46 children qualified to attend
secondary school. The problem with
education surrounded a simple
problem: a lack of schools and a
lack of teachers. The children
wanted to learn, but they had
nowhere to turn. Instead of going to
school, these grade school children
entered directly into the uneducated
workforce. They made up the early
generations of the working poor
doing work such as small farming,
fishing, day labor, hauling, or
house servants. Most of the jobs
only paid $1 a day.
When the war in the Congo settled
down, Steve and Susan faced a hard
decision: should they return or
should they stay in Tanzania? Steve
felt passionately about education
and he firmly believed that every
child should have the opportunity to
attend school. As a result, they
decided to stay in Tanzania.
Steve and Susan soon went to work.
They came up with a very simple, yet
brilliant plan: rally the villages
to build their own schools. Steve
and Susan created a model where they
cut building costs by having the
villages' people build the schools
themselves. The model not only saved
money, it also created a bond
between the villagers and their
schools. By building the schools,
the villagers became invested in the
future of the school.
The Vintons, along with their
respective villages, built three
schools their first year. As they
became comfortable with the
strategy, they set a goal of
building 56 schools within 20 years.
Steve worked closely with Tanzania's
Minister of Education, who has
supported their efforts in several
different ways. By 2005, they built
16 school buildings with more than
3,000 children in school.
The Vintons and several other
missionaries eventually formalized
their organization. They called it
"Village Schools International."
Today, they seeks volunteer teachers
from all over the United States, but
they also recruit as many local
instructors as possible. While they
don't formally recruit, they
naturally attract numerous
interested candidates for teaching
in Tanzania.
Steve Vinton visited Coleman several
weeks back, where he spoke to local
organizations about his efforts in
Africa. Steven and Susan not only
build schools, but they have also
expanded their efforts in community
building by providing education on
A.I.D.S. and transportation to
hospitals for those infected by the
disease. You can keep up with Steven
and Susan via their blog at
http://www.villageschools.org.
NEWS FROM COLEMAN COUNTY
MEDICAL CENTER
11/27/2009
If
you have been to CCMC – and have
come in the emergency entrance – you
have noticed that Phase 3 of our
cement work has started on the
driveway. As usual, it rained the
night after the contractors tore up
the old drive, but not enough to
require our maintenance crew to pump
out the water like they did in Phase
1 and 2. It will be so nice to get
this project finished!
The patient census has been up and
down so far this month, which is
fairly normal for November. December
through March or April usually show
high census, and that means our
medical staff and nurses are pretty
busy. This year, in addition to
their normal duties, the nurses will
also be training on their part of
the Electronic Medical Records
system which is being installed in
our facility. The financial,
billing, and coding personnel have
already undergone training, and the
Lab and Radiology techs have just
begun their education on this new
software system. Once all phases of
this program are up and running, it
will improve record keeping and
performance in every department in
the hospital.
If you are traveling over the
Thanksgiving holiday, please drive
safely, and if you are flying, my

County Commissioners held a Brief
End of the Month Meeting
11/25/2009
By Christine Flynn
On
Monday, the County Commissioners
held their end of the month meeting.
The meeting was brief and the agenda
was short. Commissioners updated one
another on the flood prevention
project, budgets were amended, and
monthly bills were paid.
Judge Hobbs began the meeting by
asking for any updates on the flood
prevention program that has been in
discussion for a few weeks. Since
the county is in the middle of deer
season, the Commissioners feel that
it is best to begin the major
proportion of the in-kind work after
the season is over. They do not want
to disturb the hunting. According to
the state funded program, the county
must complete their approximately
$34,000 worth of in-kind work before
May in order to receive the $336,000
grant. Judge Hobbs encouraged the
Commissioners to continue steadfast
after the deer season in order to be
rewarded this great opportunity for
the county.
Following the update, Shirley
Sansing presented the budget for
2008 to 2009 and the actual that was
allocated. All departmental budgets
were amended somewhat, but overall
the departments maintained their
budgets. Currently, each precinct is
on target with their budgets. The
two murder trials of Charles
Yardbrough and Edward Kile that were
held in the Coleman County
Courthouse late last year and
earlier this year were a large part
of the unforeseen expenses.
The meeting adjourned with paying of
the monthly bills.
The next Commissioner’s Court will
be in session Monday, December 14th
at 9:00AM. The public is welcome.
Walking with
Magnetism
11/25/2009
By Anita Calk
Well, the doctor told me
lately that my cholesterol was too
high and my vitamin D was too low,
so I have been trying to deal with
it the natural way. I really don't
like walking much, its too boring.
So I thought I'd incorporate
something a little more interesting.
I bought one of those magnets at
Home Depot that you can walk around
and sweep up nails. I don't know
what its called, but I just love to
pick up nails! I have used it all
around the house here, so I thought
I'd take it on walks with me since I
live on a dirt road.
There's lots of nails and junk just
waiting to give you a flat, right?
Its best to carry an ice cream
bucket to put the nails in, and I
carry a "lid" (from a canning jar)
to scrape them off with. I'm also
sorta into recycling, and just HATE
the beer cans and junk that gets
thrown out, so into the bucket they
go.
Oh, did I mention I have a big fat
dog that needs to walk too? And 3
cats that think they have to come
along? We make quite a parade.
Do you know Leonard who walks around
Coleman? A person could learn a lot
from Leonard! He rids the world of
aluminum cans, doesn't worry about
much, and, well, local color. What
can I say?
He does what he can. And I bet he
gets lots of Vitamin D and exercise!
Well, if you happen to drive by and
catch me doing my "Leonard"
impression, you'll know why...maybe
we could all walk more, pick up more
trash, and be healthier. And have
less flats too!
But if you live in the country, you
better not do it on the weekend or
you may get shot!

18-year-old Colemanite, reportedly fell
out of
a
pickup truck at 1st Street and
Colorado Street, while traveling a
short distance from his home in an
attempt to move a mattress. While
reports verify that the truck was
traveling at a low speed, the wind
caught the mattress and threw the
young man from the pickup bed. The young man was
allegedly unresponsive upon the

Lometa Native Celebrates 75th
Birthday & Donates Wildflower
Seeds for County Hwy. South of Santa
Anna...
11/24/2009
Contributed
The following was submitted by
Richard Tucker who is a retired
civil engineering professor at The
University of Texas at Austin. He
and his wife, Shirley, purchased a
200-acre plot on CR 213 in Coleman
County, off US Hwy. 283 about
half-way between Santa Anna and
Brady. Although they continue to
live in Austin, they use the small
ranch as a get-away for themselves
and family members who live around
Texas.
He writes, “We enjoy the community
in the Coleman area... As part of my
wife’s recent 75th birthday
celebration, her family donated
wildflower seeds for planting
one-half mile north and south of the
CR 228 intersection, along both
sides of US Hwy. 283. The donation
was made to TxDOT, and the planting
was administered by Richard Cook,
TxDOT Maintenance Supervisor for
Coleman County. Richard advises that
the seeds were planted in October
2009 and that wildflowers should
appear in the Spring of 2010, and
then additional wild flowers will
appear in 2011. The blooming should
occu regularly for several years.
My
wife is an avid devotee to wild
life, and enjoys walking our Coleman
County property regularly to view
the wild flowers, birds and other
wild life. She has also enjoyed
viewing the wild flowers along the
road side during our drives from
Austin. We obtained the idea for the
wild flower-seed donation from an
article in the Austin
American-Statesman several months
ago, describing a program in
conjunction with the Lady Bird
Johnson Wildflower Center. To our
understanding, all of the plantings
in the progra have historically been
in the Austin area and this is the
first such planting outside that
area. Hopefully, a story in the
Chronicle & DV might stimulate
others to provide similar donations.
Shirley Tucker, nee Shirley Sue
Smith, was born and raised on a
small ranch near Lometa, Texas. She
had an older brother and two older
sisters. Her folks ran a small dairy
and she milked eleven cows on her
eleventh birthday! Although she has
never lived outside the State of
Texas, and had never been outside of
Texas until she was grown, she has
since travelled extensively in the
USA and internationally.
Shirley attended the Lometa public
schools and excelled in both
academics and in sports. She
graduated as valedictorian, drum
major, all district in basketball
and tennis and principal vocalist in
both her church and school. She has
been invited to give the
commencement address at Lometa High
School and has maintained close
contact with all of her classmates.
Shirley married Richard Tucker on
September 1, 1956. The couple has
been blessed with two children and
four grandchildren. Bryan is now an
executive with Chevron and Karen is
a partner in the law firm of Vinson
& Elkins. Both Bryan and Karen have
two degrees in engineering as do
older granddaughters Brittany and
Stacey. Carson and Garrett White are
in high school and junior high in
Houston...
With an operatic quality voice,
Shirley could probably have had a
career in music. Even so, she was a
featured soloist at Hyde Park
Baptist Church and Highland Park
Baptist Church in Austin and in
First Baptist Church in Arlington.
She was also active in other church
and civic affairs in both cities,
serving on the Board of Trustees of
the Zachary Scott Theatre and
performing in The Sound of Music and
Jesus Christ Superstar in Austin.
She is an ordained Deacon in
the Baptist Church and has been
President of women’s groups in
church, community and universities
in Austin and Arlington. She
received the Helen Rogers Award as
the Outstanding Newcomer in
Arlington in 1965. She is a constant
listener of classical music and goes
regularly to New York to see the
opera and Broadway productions.
Shirley left the teaching profession
in 1980 to join her husband’s part
time consulting practice relating to
large industrial projects. She
developed expertise in construction
productivity, team building and
organizational effectiveness. In
that capacity she has consulted and
lectured on many projects in over 50
locations and countries, including
Europe, South America and the Asia
Pacific.
In recent years, Shirley has
developed her love for wild life,
with even safari trips to South
Africa and Botswana and skiing and
hiking in Colorado and Utah. She
loves nature, and serves as the
expert for identifying animals,
birds and flowers to her golfing
partners. She loves to identify
wildflowers along the highways and
pastures and has several books of
birds and wildflowers. Her love of
nature is second only to her love of
family. Thus, the planting of
wildflowers along a stretch of Texas
Highways is a fitting tribute to one
of her greatest loves and enjoyment.

Nate Slayton of Coleman was featured

Bode. The 1st grader was plagued

age and was diagnosed with a
bilateral,
severe-to-profound hearing loss. At
the age of 4 he received cochlear
implants at Cook Children’s Medical
Center.
Coleman 1st Grader Featured in
International Magazine
11/24/2009
Coleman 1st Grader Featured in
International Magazine...distributed
to members of Alexander Graham Bell
Association for the Deaf and Hard of
Hearing Nate Wesley Slayton is a
Coleman Elementary School 1st grade
student who was featured in the
September/ October 2009 issue of an
international magazine.
Nate’s mother, Kerry Slayton, writes
that Volta Voices is an
internationally distributed magazine
to Alexander Graham Bell members.
Their circulation is around 15,000.
It is published six times a year
(every two months). So Nate being
chosen is a real honor.
Kerry says, “This magazine is an
invaluable resource that helps
families like ours. We are members
and Nate did receive a grant from
them around two years ago. Thank you
for publishing this because with
awareness and education people
accept and understand what and how
our son and others with hearing
loss, no matter their age, adapt to
fit in this world and they can do
the same things we do, just in a
different way sometimes.”
Following is the magazine article
“Around the World” By Melody Felzien
and Sarah Crum. Published with
permission
Nate Wesley Slayton is a fearless
and outgoing 6-year-old Texan with a
passion to learn and grow. Nate
lives in Coleman, Texas, with his
parents, Kerry and Buddy, and
younger brother, Bode, age 4.
Plagued from a young age by ear
infections, Nate’s parents never
suspected he had a hearing loss.
“Around a year old, he started
having chronic ear infections until
tubes were put in when he was 14
months old,” explained Kerry. “At
first, the chronic ear infections
explained why his vocabulary was
behind. Nate’s doctors told us he
would catch up with his peers by the
age of 4.” And, up until then, Nate
seemed to be developing at the same
rate as his peers with typical
hearing.
However, in November, 2006, Nate
experienced a sudden drop in his
hearing. According to Kerry, “he
started losing his hearing rapidly
and noticeably. By the time the
month ended, he was completely
unresponsive to sound.” At the age
of 4, Nate was diagnosed with a
bilateral, severe-to-profound
hearing loss.
Kerry and her husband, Buddy, felt a
sense of shock and urgency. “We took
him to Cook Children’s Medical
Center to get help and figure out
what was going on, what to do next
and what our options were,” Kerry
said. Kerry and Buddy sought
resources through the cochlear
implant team at Cook Children’s
Medical Center, other parents who
had children with hearing loss and
Internet searches.
Fortunately, the Slaytons met Dr.
Paul Bauer, an ear, nose and throat
physician working with the center.
According to Kerry, Dr. Bauer helped
them understand that due to the
severity of Nate’s hearing loss,
cochlear implants were his best
option for developing spoken
language. “[Dr. Bauer] was so
wonderful with Nate and us. He was
straightforward, but compassionate
and he told us what receiving
cochlear implants entailed.”
Kerry and Buddy weighed their
options and ultimately made the
decision to have Nate receive
bilateral cochlear implants. He
received the first one at age 4
years, 3 months, and the second
three months later.
According to Kerry, Dr. Bauer helped
them understand that cochlear
implants were not a “quick fix...as
parents, we have to be 100 percent
committed and supportive (as well as
rely on our family and friends for
support) to ensure success using
cochlear implants in helping our
child achieve spoken language.”
Entering first grade this fall at
Coleman Elementary School, Nate will
continue to be supported by FM
systems and speech and auditory
therapists at school, and receive
listening and spoken language
instruction outside of school. He
also participates in Terrific Kids
Only (TKO), an after-school program.
Nate is personable and vivacious. In
school, his favorite subjects are
math and music. “These classes are
independent work,” said Kerry. “He’s
good at these subjects, so it builds
self-confidence and
self-expression.”
However, the majority of Nate’s time
is spent outside. He is currently in
his second year of T-ball through
the Coleman Youth Baseball
Association and enjoys playing with
his brother and friends, riding his
bike, playing football, hunting,
fishing, gymnastics, swimming and
doing pretty much anything outdoors.
Nate and his family go bike riding
and to church together. He also
likes to play rodeo. “He’s crazy
about rodeos, especially bull riding
and rodeo clowns,” said Kerry.
Kerry and Buddy have learned a lot
through their experience with Nate’s
hearing loss. “We are stronger
parents than we thought we were,”
she said. Kerry advises other
parents to discover options for your
child. “You must be your child’s
advocate! Do all you can, never stop
finding resources and read, read,
read to your child.”
Kerry hopes that Nate will continue
to grow and develop the more he
adapts to using cochlear implants.
“We’ll work hard together to bridge
the gap with his typical-hearing
peers so that he never feels left
behind, and teach him self-advocacy
skills to be able to tell others
what he needs to hear them,” said
Kerry.
“Our hope for both our boys’ futures
is the same: to be joyful, happy,
loving, thoughtful, kind and
productive human beings and be the
best they can be. The sky’s the
limit for them both,” said Kerry.
*****
Nate celebrated his 7th birthday on
Friday, November 20th.

AGRICULTURE SECRETARY VILSACK URGES
FARMERS AND BUSINESSES TO APPLY FOR
VALUE-ADDED PRODUCER GRANTS
Applications Must be Received by
November 30th
11/23/2009
WASHINGTON, Nov. 23, 2009 –
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack
today urged farmers and business
owners to apply for grants to add
value to the commodities they
produce. The deadline to apply is
November 30th.
"The approximately $18 million in
value-added grants announced by USDA
this past year are strengthening
rural economies and creating jobs,"
Vilsack said. "I encourage farmers
and businesses to take advantage of
this opportunity to add value to
their agricultural products by
funding planning activities such as
feasibility studies, marketing and
business plans, or for working
capital."
For example, in 2004, USDA awarded
the Michigan Turkey Producers
Cooperative in Wyoming, Mich., a
Value-Added planning grant totaling
$55,000 to prepare a feasibility
study and business plan for
marketing turkey products to
health-conscious customers. In 2005,
a second $150,000 grant was awarded
to provide marketing capital in
order to increase brand awareness
and promote the benefits of the
company's farm-to-table practices.
As a result of USDA's assistance,
the cooperative was able to hire 66
new employees and open a new
processing plant for new product
lines.
USDA will award planning grants of
up to $100,000 and working capital
grants of up to $300,000 to
successful applicants. Applicants
are encouraged to propose projects
that use existing agricultural
products in non-traditional ways or
merge agricultural products with
technology in creative ways.
Businesses of all sizes may apply,
but priority will be given to
operators of small and medium-sized
family farms – those with average
annual gross sales of less than
$700,000.
Applicants must provide matching
funds equal to the amount of the
grant requested. Ten percent of the
funding being made available is
reserved for beginning farmers or
ranchers and socially disadvantaged
farmers or ranchers. An additional
10 percent is reserved for projects
involving local and regional supply
networks that link independent
producers with businesses and
cooperatives that market value-added
products.
Paper applications must be submitted
to the Rural Development state
office in the state where the
project will be located. A list of
state offices is available at
www.rurdev.usda.gov/recd_map.html .
Electronic applications must be
submitted through www.Grants.gov .
For more information on how to
apply, please see page 45165 of the
September 1, 2009 Federal Register
or visit www.rurdev.usda.gov/rbs/coops/vadg.htm
.
USDA Rural Development's mission is
to increase economic opportunity and
improve the quality of life for
rural residents. Rural Development
fosters growth in homeownership,
finances business development and
supports the creation of critical
community and technology
infrastructure. Further information
on rural programs is available at a

refreshments. Plans were made for
the Holiday Fair and Gouldbusk
Community Thanksgiving Dinner which
have both taken place. During roll
call, everyone answered with their
favorite Thanksgiving pie. After our
business meeting Shari Craig
presented the program “Gifts from
the Table to the Tub”. She made
Toffee Coffee Mix and Vegetable Rice
Mix. She gave us ideas on making
gift baskets and other ways to give
these things as gifts. This was a
timely program with the holidays
coming up.

Laptop Celebration A Huge Success!
11/20/2009
An
enormous crowd of students, parents,
and educators gathered in the
Coleman High School auditorium,
anxiously awaiting their school
issued laptops. The students laughed
and cheered throughout the entire
ceremony, as they thought of the new
possibilities their laptops would
afford them.
The
ceremony opened with Paul Martin,
Coleman ISD's Technology Director,
who introduced the celebration's
speakers and gave thanks to the
parties involved in making the
laptop give away possible. Next,
Superintendent Royce Young spoke,
where he jokingly questioned Mr.
Martin's intelligence. Mr. Young
said that for every laptop or new
technology added to the campus, Mr.
Martin and his support staff would
have a larger workload.
Nevertheless, he was confident that
Mr. Martin could handle the new
workload.
Dr.
Mark Jamison, Ed.D., who attended
Coleman Elementary school ,
delivered the keynote address to the
students. He addressed the endless
possibilities that technology would
bring to the students. Dr. Jamison
said that bringing laptops to the
schoolroom would dramatically
increase a child's educational
experience. For example, when
students are asked to answer a
question, they could respond through
an interactive application on their
computer instead of raising their
hands or shouting out an answer.
Also, several class rooms are having
document cameras installed, which
are very similar to an overhead
projector. However, "doc cams,"
their nickname, can scan a document
and send it directly to the students
on their laptops for future referene.
Dr. Jamison also engaged the
students about the new creative
spheres brought along with the
laptops. For instance, students will
have software where they can make
movies, add their voice to
presentations, and access the
internet and online libraries.
Essentially, the new laptops that
each students receives levels the
socioeconomic playing field by
providing Coleman students with
access to a more expansive range of
information and educational
opportunities.
Doodie Taylor-Knox spoke on behalf
of the Coleman Public Library. The
Coleman Public Library and Mrs. Knox
played a pivotal role in obtaining
the T3 Grant, which allowed CISD,
partnered with the State of Texas
and Dell Computers, to provide these
children with laptops. Mrs. Knox
mentioned the libraries openness to
the students. The library will
provide free Wi-Fi access to all
students, while also
providing a safe and educational
environment. The library created a
new teen lounge, the Tillman
Training Room, and will launch a
software literacy program in the
near future for the entire community
which will help anyone from students
to those trying to obtain a GED to
people wanting to take ESL courses.
At
the end of the presentation,
Elementary Principal Becky Jackson
and Loretta Epperson drew names for
several lucky door prize winners.
Shoppin' Baskit sponsored several
Thanksgiving Turkey giveaways, while
Pearson Education gave away gift
bags with flash drives to a few
lucky winners. Nonetheless, the most
coveted prize of the night was a
laptop computer, provided by Dell
Computers. The winner of the custom
laptop computer was 4th grade
student, Melina Watson.
Following the presentation, the
students went to their homerooms
where the teachers and
administrators handed out the laptop
computers. The children get to take
their computers to school and home,
where they conduct homework and
projects and can use the computers
for their personal use.

Team Cade participates in 3rd JDRF
Walk to Cure Diabetes
11/19/2009
Team
Cade participated in our 3rd JDRF
Walk to Cure Diabetes on Saturday,
October 31. This year we walked at
Mueller Lake Park in Austin, TX.
We
arrived in Austin at 1:45 Saturday
morning. We had to wait until after
the Bluecat football game Friday
night, since Cade's brother Reid was
playing (#48). We caught a few hours
sleep, then headed to the park. It
was a gorgeous day – we needed long
sleeves under our t-shirts to start
the day, but had our sleeves pushed
up by the time we were finished. On
our way to turn in our collected
donations, Cade's Nanna (Connie
Watson) stepped in a hole and ended
up fracturing her ankle. Her “walk”
was spent sitting on a bench with
her foot propped up.
For
the rest of us, we started with the
gun and were at the front of the
pack. With the walk being on
Halloween, we had all kinds of
characters around us. There were
ghouls and goblins, doctors, cartoon
characters and clowns. Even the
hundreds of dogs got in on the
costume act. There were dolphin
dogs, bat dogs, witch dogs, and even
a doberman in a dress. Our own
mascot, Ariel the dog, had on her
Team Cade Cowboys shirt.
As
we walked along the designated
route, we passed some bongo drummers
set up on the park's lake, some
cheerleaders shouting encouragement,
and a band of banjo players
consisting of older, retired
gentlemen from the Austin area.
There were “trick or treat” stops
along the way, with stickers, spider
rings, tattoos, cold bottled water,
juice, and sugar/carb free snacks.
When we passed the finish line, Cade
headed for the park playground,
where he wore himself out on some
really neat equipment. Then we
picked up Nanna from her bench,
headed to our first visit at
Freebird's, then headed home.
JDRF holds a Walk to Cure Diabetes
in cities all over the country every
year.
You
can pretty much just pick a weekend,
then pick a city to walk in. Since
JDRF spends over 85% of their yearly
income on diabetes research, they
are the leading contributor to this
endeavor. We look forward to
participating in the walk, because
it's a way for Cade to be directly
involved in raising money to help
cure the disease he has had for just
over 2 years. We are very confident
there will be a cure for type 1
diabetes within Cade's lifetime.
Until that time, we will continue to
raise money, and promote awareness
of the disease.
Our fundraising efforts consisted of
a letter writing campaign, newspaper
and internet articles, and a beef
fajita booth at the Fiesta de la
Paloma. We need to give some special
thanks to some folks whose help was
invaluable. Rick Barnett, Clay Dixon
and Keri Cooke helped cook and man
the fajita booth, along with CHS
Student Council members Mercedes
Taylor, Dylan Buzzard, Reagan Barr,
Erin Strickland, Erik Villeda, Wayne
Worsham, Autum White and Miranda
Brooks.
Coleman Elementary sponsored a
“Trick or Treat for Diabetes” week.
Each grade put their change in
pumpkins, and the money collected
was turned in to JDRF. They raised
$259.36! This helped us exceed our
goal of $3000 – our grand total
turned in was $3153.36. Thank you,
Coleman – and family and friends!
Through your generosity, we once
again met our fundraising goal and
are one step closer to finding a
cure!

Letter to the Editor:
11/19/2009
So many times in our lives, we get
so caught up in the negative things
in life that we miss some pretty
awesome things that are going on
around us everyday! In case anyone
from Coleman doesn't know this, we
are turning out some really great
young people. Recently I got the
opportunity to take my son and and a
very special young lady to College
Station to visit the A&M campus.
This was my first trip to this
school and we wanted to see as much
as possible while there.
I contacted Meagan
Dunnam, an Ex-Coleman grad, and
asked her if she might be able to
find a little time to show us
around. She was so excited to help
out that she reserved her entire day
to walk us all over campus, giving
us history lessons and college life
stories.
While there, Meagan
Ogden, also an Ex-Coleman grad,
stepped up to the plate and showed
us through her dorm so that we could
get an idea of what the housing
would be like. She gave us great
advice on how to get involved
immediately upon entering so that
the kids would have the opportunity
to meet and make new friends. She
was very helpful with cafeteria
choices as well!!. Next, Reece
Halfmann, yet again an Ex-Coleman
grad, tracked us down so that he
could complete our tour by showing
us his dorm and he even took it one
step further. We had a few places in
town that we wanted to see and he
volunteered to show us around town.
These young people are extremely
busy, yet they took time out of
their schedules to offer their help,
advice and encouragement. It truly
made me proud to be in the company
of all of these Coleman graduates.
I'm honored to call myself a part of
that legacy. I hope that if you are
a Coleman graduate that you too will
wear the title with pride and pass
on the excellence that was instilled
in us all. Yes Coleman, we do have
great kids. The next time you see
one, take the time to let them know
how proud you are of them. I
promise, one day they are going to
go into this world and make a
difference!

School board hires "new" teacher,
passes 4-H resolution
11/18/2009
The Coleman Independent School
District Board of Trustees met last
Monday, November 16, 2009. The Board
was called to order by Board
President Mike Edington at 7:02 p.m.
The Board first considered several
resignations and considerations for
hire. Lorene Halfmann retired after
serving Coleman High School for 33
years as both a teacher and then its
counselor since 1986. Jeanie
Hubbard, an algebra high school
teacher, asked to exit her contract
with CISD for health and family
considerations. Boe Smith, an
assistant principal, also issued his
resignation, whereas Superintendent
Young announce that they would not
be hiring another person to fill his
place.
While Lorene Halfmann's positions
has already been filled, Jeanie
Hubbard's spot had not.
Nevertheless, Kathy Turner, former
ColemanNews.com owner and former
teacher, was considered for the
position and accepted unanimously by
the Board of Trustees.
The Board next moved on to approving
the campus and district reports. The
Junior High report added C-Scope and
additional technology information,
and the High School had additional
focuses on career and technology
information. The High School was
also required by the State of Texas
to address issues like
pregnancy-related services and
campus safety.
The Board then reviewed its contact
with the Coleman County Tax
Appraisal District, which they
approved unanimously. The Board also
nominated Viki Hambright for another
term for the 2010 Coleman County Tax
Appraisal District Board of
Directors.
Luther Dunlap and Kristin Burris
were appointed as adjunct faculty
when the Board of Trustees passed a
resolution designating
extracurricular status to 4-H.
Lastly, Mr. Young, CISD's
Superintendent, gave an overview of
the grants and ARRA monies accepted
by Coleman ISD. The list of grants
and monies included the DATE Grant,
T3 Collaborative Coleman County
Grant, COOP for Special Services,
NCLB Cons-Federal ARRA/Stimulus
grant, OEYP Optional Extended Year
Program Grant, Student Success
Initiative, NCLB Consolidated
Federal Grant, Title XIV State
Fiscal Stabilization Grant, Title
II, and Vision 20/20. Each grant
listed targets a school's specific
needs. Although the total sum of the
grants seemed large, each grant is
restricted for particular use. For
instance, a large sum of stimulus
money from the federal government
could only be used for special
education services.
The December Board of Trustees
meeting will be announced in the
near future.

Senator Hutchison Secures $4.89
Million for Dyess Air Force Base
11/17/2009
Senate
Passes Military Construction,
Veterans Affairs, and Related
Agencies Appropriations Bill
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S.
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX),
Ranking Member of the Appropriations
Subcommittee for Military
Construction and Veterans Affairs,
announced that the full Senate has
approved the Fiscal Year 2010
Military Construction, Veterans
Affairs, and Related Agencies
Appropriations bill. The measure
includes $4.89 million she secured
for Dyess Air Force Base. The bill
will now be reconciled with the
House version of the bill.
“The C-130 is the primary tactical
airlifter for military forces
throughout the world,” Senator
Hutchison said. “I am proud to have
secured funding for the new C-130
maintenance hangar, which will help
ensure not only that this versatile
aircraft is ready for challenging
missions all over the world, but
that Dyess remains one of America’s
premier Air Force bases.”
Dyess Air Force Base will utilize
$4.5 million in funding for a
multipurpose C-130 maintenance
hangar. An additional $390,000 will
be used for planning and design of a
Mission Operations Center.
The appropriations legislation funds
military construction projects and
veterans services for the U.S.
Departments of Defense and Veterans
Affairs. Senator Hutchison
successfully secured more than $1.5
billion in the bill for Texas
military construction and Base
Realignment and Closure (BRAC)
projects.
The overall bill provides $12.6
billion for military construction,
$2.3 billion for military family
housing construction, and more than
$7.5 billion for the implementation
of BRAC. It also provides Veterans
Affairs with $53.2 billion in
discretionary spending, which is
mostly for veterans health care,
$55.8 billion in mandatory spending,
giving the VA $109 billion for 2010
and an additional $48.2 billion in
advanced funding for 2011.

FARM SERVICE AGENCY COUNTY COMMITTEE
ELECTIONS BEGINS
11/17/2009
Curtis L. Garrett, Executive
Director of USDA’s Farm Service
Agency in Coleman Texas announced
that the 2009 FSA county committee
election ballots are being mailed to
eligible voters. December 7, 2009,
is the deadline for eligible voters
to return ballots to their local FSA
offices.
"The FSA county committee system is
unique among government agencies,
because it allows producers to make
important decisions concerning the
local administration of federal farm
programs," said Garrett. "I urge all
eligible farmers and ranchers,
especially minorities and women, to
get involved and make a real
difference in their communities by
voting in this year's elections."
Committee members apply their
knowledge and judgment to make
decisions on disaster and
conservation payments, establishment
of allotments and yields, producer
appeals, employing FSA county
executive directors and other local
issues. FSA committees operate
within official regulations designed
to carry out federal laws.
To be an eligible voter, farmers and
ranchers must participate or
cooperate in FSA programs. A person
who is not of legal voting age, but
supervises and conducts the farming
operations of an entire farm, can
also vote. Agricultural producers in
each country submitted candidate
names during the nomination period
held last summer.
Eligible voters who do not receive
ballots in the coming week can
obtain ballots at their local USDA
Service Center. December 7, 2009, is
the last day for voters to submit
ballots in person to local USDA
Service Centers. Ballots returned by
mail must be postmarked no later
than December 7th. Newly elected
committee members and alternates
take office January 1, 2010.
Close to 8,000 FSA county committee
members meet monthly at more than
2,300 FSA offices nationwide. Each
committee consists of three to five
members who serve three-year terms.
Approximately one-third of county
committee seats are up for election
annually.

county committees and FSA programs,

She was sponsored by Leather and
Lace of Santa Anna.
In the next age group was Kyndell
Malaer of Coleman. Kyndell also took

Santa Anna Woman Runs Marathon
11/17/2009
This
past weekend, 32,000 runners
converged on the streets of San
Antonio for the Rock and Roll
Marathon. Among the 26,500 that
completed either the half- or
full-marathon were Laurel Guthrie
and her friends from Dallas,
Shantell Jones and Louellen Coker.
After training for almost nine
months, running alone in the early
morning darkness and overcoming a
major strained hamstring, Ms.
Guthrie trekked to San Antonio
Friday afternoon to scout the
course. Accompanied by her husband
Rhett, Laurel and her friends
arrived early Sunday morning to
stretch and prepare for the grueling
26.2 mile feat of endurance.
Last year's event began in
near-freezing temperatures, but
runners arrived Sunday in light
clothing. Temperatures started in
the mid-60s at the starting line on
Broadway and hit 70 by the time
runners hit the finish line next to
the Alamodome. Humidity that hovered
at 94 percent sapped the runners and
spurred the group that managed the
event to initiate its “heat plan” to
combat the withering conditions. Two
unidentified runners collapsed and
required treatment.
From the scattered few who showed up
at 5 a.m., stretching and jogging in
the darkness, to late arrivals
streaming off shuttle buses, the
line of runners eventually stretched
more than a half-mile long.
Contacted on her arrival back in
Santa Anna Sunday evening, Ms.
Guthrie was still enjoying the
“runner’s high”. “I feel great—no
soreness—no pain—I feel great!” were
among the comments about her
once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Laurel is not planning a new
avocation marathoning around the
world, but she is both proud and
relieved of her achievement, as well
she should be.

Coleman 1st graders collect gifts
for troops
11/16/2009
Mrs.
Kading’s and Mrs. Hind’s 1st grade
classes have been collecting goods
to send to our soldiers in
Afghanistan. We will send a shipment
for Thanksgiving and then again
around Christmas. If you would like
to donate items, please feel free.
We will include them with our
shipments.
They need things such as beef jerky
and nutri-grain bars (good for quick
meals). They are on the road a lot
so Ramen noodles are good, any
flavor. Glove liners, hand warmers,
chap stick, sunscreen, batteries, &
thick socks are just a few of the
things they need. They LOVE homemade
baked goods. If you choose to make
something such as that, please have
it vacuum packed. Also, they love to
receive letters and pictures.
We feel it is important that the
children begin to understand the
true meaning of “Thanksgiving” and
the spirit of the Christmas season.
We want to let the soldiers know
that we are truly thankful for what
they are doing for us and our
country.

COLEMAN NATIVE RETURNS
11/16/2009
Coleman
native son Rick Ogles returns Nov.
20th and 21st for an Evangelistic
meeting at the Tillman Community
Center. Rick Ogles was and raised in
Coleman Texas. He is the Grandson of
Bennie Bodine, son of Dannie Jo
Bodine, and his aunt Jan Garner
still lives in Coleman. He found
Jesus at the Emanuel Baptist Church
under Pastor Paul Hubbard at the age
of 12. No one else in the family was
going to church then, but Rick was
drawn Sunday after Sunday to that
little Baptist Church. Rick knew
then that he was called to preach,
but like so many of us, he went his
own way for a while, and did all the
things that young men do. For the
next few years, it was “drugs, sex
and rock and roll.”
Then in 1986 after a close call with
a drug overdose Rick rededicated his
life to Jesus. He was delivered from
drugs, cigarettes, and other things
and has been serving the Lord in
different fields. Since then, he has
had the pleasure of leading his
mother to the Lord. His sister,
brother and Dad also are now
Christians. He has done jail
ministry at the county jail in the
county he lives in now. Also nursing
Home ministry to the elderly.
Preaching and teaching at various
churches in central and North Texas.
He has pastured 2 churches, The
Lambs Corral in Laguna Park, TX. For
a short time and now for the last
four years he has been the Pastor of
the Olive Branch Christian
Fellowship in Whitney, TX.
Evangelist Ogles and his wife of 24
years makes his triumphal return to
his home turf to hold an
evangelistic meeting at the Tillman
Community Center on Fri. Nov. 20th
at 6 P.M. and Sat, Nov. 21st at 2
P.M. in the afternoon.
Evangelist Ogles will be joined by
“The Olive Branch Praise and Worship
Team”, and by his team of
Evangelists and Teachers.
Come one come all for a rousing time
of worshipping Jesus. These meetings
welcome all people of all
denominations. Come praise the Lord
with us. You will not be
disappointed.
House Deliberates into the Night and
Mike Conaway Visits Coleman
by
Christine Flynn
11/16/2009
Last
Saturday, November 7th, the House of
Representatives passed the health
care reform with a very close vote
of 220 for and 215 against. The next
step will be passing the vote in the
Senate where a compiled version of
the bill will be introduced. Since
President Obama was elected into
office, he has voiced that our
country is in need of change.
However, the health care system
reform has surpassed all other
problems as Americans wonder how
this bill may transform their future
and their children’s future.
The final tally shows the distinct
divide in the two political parties
with 219 Democrats voting for the
reform and the sole Republican,
Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine sided
with the Democrats. The
approximately 2,000 page bill has
caused many to either rejoice or to
be afraid. Conservatives are afraid
that with this change the government
will be intruding on their lives and
eventually taking over the health
care system. Also, they strongly
believe that there will be a high
tax surcharged on them in an already
difficult time in our nation’s
economy. Liberals support the idea
that all American citizens deserve
the same quality of health care.
They also believe that the direct
cost to the citizens would be less
by eliminating costs with private
insurance companies. Overall, there
is apprehension how this new bill
will affect the future of our
national deficit.
Mike Conaway, Congressman for the
11th district of Texas came to
Coleman on Thursday to explain the
current situation at hand and also
answer any questions the public had.
The downtown library was filled with
much anxiety and bewildered
Colemanites that morning.
Congressman Conaway first thanked
the enthusiastic crowd for coming to
the meeting and began by explaining
what just occurred last Saturday. He
had been informed that the projected
timeline of the Senate was to
complete the new version of the bill
and pass it by the end of the
calendar year.
Conaway encouraged the public
regardless of what they believed to
make their opinions be heard. First
action to take is to notify friends
and family in other districts and
states to contact their Congressman
via e-mail or fax with a brief but
to the point of view. He also
advised that contacting Harry Reid,
the Senate’s majority leader’s
office as well. According to the
Congressman, each official tallies
public opinions to better represent
their people. He strongly
discouraged participation in
petitions where they ask for money
as these programs are most likely
scams. Contact your local officials
yourselves.
After the explanation of the current
situation, hands eagerly raised for
Congressman Conaway to call on them.
One individual had heard rumors and
wanted clarification of how Medicare
would be affected. He replied that
the current Medicare system would
eliminate some benefits and may
affect one’s quality of care as the
funds would be placed elsewhere in
the bill.
Also, another individual asked “Will
this bill add to our national
deficit and by how much?”
Congressman Conaway responded with
the example that our children’s
children will suffer high taxes and
still be paying off our current $12
trillion debt. According to a report
on cbs.com, “the Congressional
Budget Office estimates that the
House proposal would actually
increase the deficit by $239 billion
over 10 years.”
Then another individual asked, “Why
do we need to be so haste and get
this reform passed so quickly
especially on such an important
subject?” The Congressman replied
that the overwhelming support for
this reform from the Democratic
Party has led them to going forward
as the next election is just a short
period of time ahead in 2010. The
next elected Speaker of the House
will be a Republican election which
in turn may not be as supportive of
this proposal.
Other comments followed with the
people of the meeting distinctly
worried about where their futures
lie and they continued to voice
their frustration with the direction
of the federal government.
This is a historical moment in our
country and if you want to be heard
then take Congressman Conaway’s
advice to contact your local
officials. “Everyone has their own
particular part to play. No part is
too great or too small. No one is
too old or too young to do
something." (Bobby Sands)
COLEMAN COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
PRESS RELEASE
11/16/2009
Don't laugh, but I belong to the
Montana Emergency Management
Association. It is free and they
have members throughout the country
and the administrator puts out a lot
of good information in his weekly
news letter.
This week he covered common sense things that we can all do. I don't
think we have any terrorist in the
area but we have a lot of other
thing that affect us in our every
day lives. These are more for the
elderly but they apply to all of us
and what we can do and what we need
to look out for. Loose throw rugs
can put a person in the hospital so,
when you buy one, makesure it has a
non-skid back on it. Medications
that do not work well together. When
you have a pharmacist that you use
exclusive he can better keep track
of your medications and warn you if
some of them do not work well
together. Be sure and tell your
doctor ALL of the medications you
are taking both prescribed and over
the counter.
Other things we need to worry about are unlocked doors and windows,
wobbly chairs, worn electrical
cords, home repair fraud, e-mail
fraud and telemarketers to name just
a few. Have smoke alarms and good
locks on your doors and do not give
any one you do not know your
personal information. Be careful and
stay healthy.

Coleman High School has received the
“2009 College Readiness Award’ from
the Texas ACT Council for
maintaining or increasing the number
of students taking the ACT
Assessment over the past five years
and significantly increasing their
level of achievement and college
readiness. According to Karen L.
Pennell, Assistant Vice President

Less that 5% of all high schools in
Texas were honored for this superior
level of accomplishment. The Texas
ACT Council wanted to recognize
those Texas high schools that have
made significant strides in
increasing the college readiness of
their graduates as demonstrated by
their ACT score increases over the
past five years. This can only
happen as a result of the high
school’s faculty and staff efforts
and the dedication of Coleman High
School students and parents to focus
on college readiness and raise the
level of college readiness for all
students.
The Texas ACT Council is comprised of secondary and postsecondary

USDA URGES VOTERS TO PARTICIPATE IN
COUNTY COMMITTEE ELECTIONS
11/12/2009
Curtis L. Garrett, Executive Director of
USDA’s Farm Service Agency in Coleman
County today urged Coleman farmers,
ranchers and other agricultural
producers to vote in FSA county
committee elections by December 7, 2009,
the deadline for casting ballots.
“FSA county committees provide producers
with the opportunity to help implement
federal farm programs in their
communities,” said Garrett. “It is vital
that all farmers and ranchers,
especially women and minorities,
participate in the elections process to
ensure the opinions expressed in
committee meetings reflect an area’s
agricultural sector.”
Producers must return ballots to their
local FSA offices by the close of
business on December 7, 2009. Newly
elected committee members and alternates
take office January 1, 2010.
FSA county committees help administer
federal farm programs at the local
level. Committee members make decisions
on conservation programs; commodity
price support loans and payments;
disaster assistance payments; and other
agricultural issues.
County committees consist of three to
five elected members who serve
three-year terms. Committees may also
have one or more female or minority
advisors to further represent the local
interests of women and minority farmers
and ranchers. Each year, one-third of
all committee members are elected across
the country. More than 8,000 county
committee members serve in more than
2,300 local FSA offices nationwide.

committee elections, visit

The
Section 9007 Rural Energy for America
Program (REAP) through USDA Rural
Development offers competitive grant,
guaranteed loans and combination
grant/guaranteed loans to help
agricultural producers and rural small
businesses purchase and install
renewable energy systems and make energy
efficiency improvements in rural areas.
Renewable Energy and energy efficiency
systems provide a significant
opportunity for rural economic
development and growth. Renewable energy
is energy derived from wind, solar,
biomass, or geothermal source; or
hydrogen derived from biomass or water
using wind, solar, biomass or geothermal
energy sources.
Energy efficiency improvements are a
tool for increasing farm or business
productivity while reducing costs.
Projects may include retrofitting
lighting or insulation, or purchasing or
replacing equipment with more efficient
units in existing facilities or new
replacement facilities. Some examples of
energy efficiency projects include:
grain dryer replacement, irrigation
systems, poultry house improvements, and

more than ten million youth since its
founding in1945. There are over 18,000
members in Texas.
FCCLA is unique among youth
organizations because its programs are
planned and run by members. It is the
only career and technical in-school
student organization with the family as
its central focus. Participation in
national programs and chapter activities
helps members become strong leaders in
their families, careers, and
communities.
Attending with the students were Lorene
Halfmann and Bonnie Brown, advisor.

The State Health Department is recommending that pregnant women and
children from 2 to 4 be the first to get

child the parent needs to call the local
clinics and get their recommendations on
getting their child vaccinated. Both
clinics in Coleman County have H1N1
vaccine available and will be getting in
more vaccine over the next few weeks. .
It is recommended that if you get the flu that you wait at least 24 hours
after your fever has broken before you
return to school or to work. More
importantly if you get the flu, please,
stay at home and call you primary care
physician for instructions. Call first
before you go to your physician's office
or to the ER and let them determine what
course of action you need to take.

The
Last Twenty-four Hours of a Coleman
Icon, Hurschel Dunn
11/11/2009
Submitted by
Diann Dunn Dillingham
Thursday,
January 24, 2008
My head jerked as the jolt of the cell
phone vibrating in my pocket yanked my
thoughts back to reality; my husband
John was driving us through the misting
rain toward home. The caller I.D.
revealed Coleman County Medical Center,
the hospital where my father was a
patient, and I dreaded hearing the news
on the other end.
“Hello, Diann? This is Chanda at the
hospital. You need to get here as soon
as possible. Your dad has taken a turn
for the worse.”
Entering the city limits of Brownwood,
we were a little over 30 minutes away
from Coleman. A silent prayer formed on
my lips as I implored God to let him
live until we could get there. It had
been a long day, already; it loomed to
be much longer.
Hurschel Dunn, my father, had lived
independently on the farm where he had
grown up until almost 12 months before.
Because of two wrecks with his prized
pickup, the second of which totaled the
vehicle, Hurschel had agreed to move
into an efficiency apartment in town.
After two short months in the apartment,
though, his hip broke and he ended up in
the nursing home Holiday Hill for rehab.
As frequently happens with elderly who
have broken a hip, my father began a
gradual decline in health. But we
remained optimistic that he would walk
again, and he was determined to live to
reach 100 years, a goal he had
maintained all his life. Even at 96, he
always insisted that everyone call him
Hurschel, even his children,
grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He liked his name. That’s what he wanted
to be called.
For the past eight days, John and I had
been taking care of a cousin’s children
while my cousin and his wife were out of
the country. When we had left home, my
dad was still in the nursing home. But
four days into our absence, Hurschel was
hospitalized with pneumonia. I prayed
constantly that he would recover, or at
least, God willing, live until we could
return home...for the

EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION SEARCHING
FOR DESERVING FAMILIES IN COLEMAN, TEXAS
11/11/2009
HOLLYWOOD, CA – Nov, 10th, 2009
Do you
know a family whose home deserves an
Extreme Makeover? If so, the producers
of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
want to hear from you. “We are looking
for the deserving people and inspiring
families that America can relate to,”
says Supervising Producer Rebecca
Shumsky.
The
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition producers
are looking for families whose homes
desperately need to be rebuilt. “We
really want to help families whose homes
present major problems for the family,
those big issues that affect the
family's quality of life on a daily
basis. We want to find deserving people
who just don't have the resources,
ability, or time to fix those serious
issues without our help.”
To be
eligible, a family must OWN their own
single family home and be able to show
producers how a makeover will make a
huge difference in their lives.
Interested families should e-mail a
short description of their family story
to: ExtremeTexas@gmail.com Nominations
may be submitted by the family or by a
member of their community. Each
nomination must include the names and
ages of every member of the household
along with a description of the major
challenges within the home Anyone
submitting a nomination should be sure
to explain why the nominated family is
deserving, heroic, and/or a great role
model for their community. If possible,
include a recent photo of the family.
All nominations must include a contact
phone number.
The
deadline for nominations December 1st,
2009. Don’t delay! For more information
on how to apply please visit our website
at: http://abc.go.com/primetime/xtremehome/index?pn=apply.
Each episode of Extreme Makeover: Home
Edition is self-contained and features a
race against time to complete a project
that would ordinarily take at least four
months, involving a team of designers,
contractors and several hundred workers
who have just seven days to totally
rebuild an entire property: every single
room of the house, plus the exterior and
landscaping.
The lives
of the lucky families are forever
changed when they learn that they have
been selected to have their home walls
moved, their floors replaced and even
their façades radically changed. The
result should be a decorator’s delight…
if it can be done in time. Each episode
begins with team leader Ty Pennington’s
now-famous “Good morning!” wake-up call,
when he and his design team surprise the
unsuspecting family with news that their
home has been chosen to receive a
makeover. Viewers not only witness the
unbelievable transformation of the
house, but during the final and
emotional reveal, they see how the home
makeover has impacted the lives of the
deserving families.
The
design team includes team leader Ty
Pennington, with designers Paul DiMeo,
Paige Hemmis, Michael Moloney, Ed
Sanders, Tracy Hutson, Eduardo Xol and
John Littlefield. New designers for this
season will be Rib Hillis and Didi Ayer.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Thanks
11/10/2009
October
was National Domestic Violence Awareness
Month. During this month, our community
joined together to promote greater
public awareness about domestic
violence. It was an excellent
opportunity for our community to
demonstrate its support in ending
domestic violence and show support to
the numerous victims who are among us.
Moreover, it was a wonderful opportunity
to educate the public on the seriousness
of domestic violence and the prevalence
of this epidemic in our lives.
The Ark Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Shelter board of directors
and staff would like to offer our
sincere appreciation to the following
for their part in making Domestic
Violence Awareness month a success:
Brownwood Bulletin, Brownwood
Janitorial, BrownwoodNews.com, Citizens
National Bank, ColemanNews.com,
Forget-Me-Not Florist, Hallum Floral &
Gifts, KOXE Radio Station, Lamar Signs,
Live Oak Pharmacy, Ricardo’s Tortilla
Factory, Santa Anna Grocery, Sliger’s
Produce, and Walmart.
For the proclamations declaring October 2009 as Domestic Violence
Awareness Month: Honorable Judges E. Ray
West, III, Brown County; James Arthur,
Comanche County; Jimmie Hobbs, Coleman
County; Brownwood Mayor Bert V. Massey,
II; Early Mayor Robert Mangrum; Comanche
Mayor Dr. Raymond Stepp; and Coleman
Mayor Nick Poldrack.
We also would like to convey our appreciation to Wendlee Broadcasting for
the publicity and hosting of our
Drive-Thru Lunch event, as well as
Howard Payne University’s Girling Center
for Social Justice, Dan and Lynn
Humeniuk and their students for hosting
and attending The Candlelight Vigil. A
special thanks to our Candlelight Vigil
speaker, Andrea Moore, for her courage
to speak about the loss of her daughter
to domestic violence and all who
attended and played a part in these
events.
During this month, we rededicated ourselves to protecting vulnerable
members of our society and ensuring
domestic abusers are punished to the
full extent of the law. We encouraged
victims of domestic violence and their
families to seek assistance. Together,
we can help heal hearts and build a
culture in which all citizens of Brown,
Coleman, and Comanche counties can
safely pursue and realize their dreams.

How
You Can Help Those Affected by the
Tragedy at Fort Hood
11/10/2009
Last week Texas was shocked by tragedy
and loss after the horrific shooting at
Fort Hood, but the response by Texas and
the nation has shown just how much we
appreciate the contributions and
sacrifices of those who put their lives
on the line to defend our freedoms here
and abroad.
To honor those who lost their lives last Thursday, I immediately ordered
the lowering of all Texas flags to
half-staff through Sunday. I also
authorized the immediate deployment of a
variety of state resources to the Fort
Hood area, including Texas Department of
Public Safety Troopers, Texas Rangers
and helicopters, to assist in securing
the perimeter of the base and provide
other necessary support. The Texas
Rangers are now part of a
multi-jurisdictional force investigating
this tragedy.
Although we are all deeply saddened by these events and mourn the loss of
those whose lives were taken, I hope you
will join me in my emphatic support of
our troops and their mission. As those
injured begin the road to recovery and
as Fort Hood families impacted by the
shootings work to move forward with
their lives, you can help by
contributing to the Central Texas-Fort
Hood Chapter, Association of the U.S.
Army (AUSA), a 501(c)3 non-profit
organization.
Soldiers and their families will receive 100% of all funds. Please write
"Community Response to 11/5" on the memo
line of your checks and mail them to
this address:
The Central Texas- Fort Hood Chapter
Association of the US Army
Attn: Community Response to 11/5
PO Box 10700
Killeen, TX 76547-0700
I ask that you continue to pray for the victims, their families and the
extended Fort Hood community as they
recover from this horrific event and as
our soldiers continue defending our
freedoms here at home and overseas.
Thank you,
Rick Perry
Coleman City Council covers lengthy
agenda
11/10/2009
Submitted by
Jo Ann Eddleman
The Coleman City Council met Thursday in
regular session with all members
present.
Council addressed a lengthy agenda which opened with a public hearing to
hear comments and questions from anyone
about the environmental impact of the
new water supply line from Hords Creek
Lake to the City’s water system located
off Peach Street on the west side of
town. Roy Poage asked if the line would
go under County Road 503. City Manager
Larry Weise told Poage and the Council
that the line was not going to involve
503 and would generally follow Corps of
Engineer and City rights-of-way. Another
question clarified how long the work
would take. A spokesman for Jacob &
Martin, the engineering firm in charge
of the planning of the project,
indicated the project would take 90 –
180 days. No disruption of streets in
the city limits is anticipated in this
first phase of the $5.9 million water
improvement project being financed with
a no-interest 30-year loan from the
Texas Water Development Board.
Upon the recommendation of the City Manager, Council agreed to table the
Economic Development Board’s
recommendation that Tim Manley be
appointed to fill the EDC board position
vacated by Randy Turner. Weise said he
thought it would be appropriate to give
others who might be equally qualified
and willing to serve on the EDC board
the opportunity to express interest in
serving on the EDC board. Councilman
John Plummer asked EDC president Larry
Robinson if any other names had been
under consideration. Robinson said no
other candidates were considered. The
matter will be placed on a later agenda
once other names have been developed for
consideration for the vacant board
position.
After discussion of the first reading of Ordinance 1108 regulating
skateboards, roller skates, bicycles and
other similar devices on sidewalks,
Council decided, with a 3 to 1 vote, to
amend the ordinance to eliminate the
inclusion of through-streets such as
Walnut and Fifth Avenue and include only
those streets in the downtown business
area per se. Councilman Terry Langley
voted against the amendment, preferring
the ordinance to include through-streets
as presented.
Police Sergeant Phil Chambers advised Council the Police Department has
received 70 calls this year, 22 in the
last three months, about skateboarding.
Businesses, in particular, are
complaining about the damage to
landscaping and other property damage.
City Manager Weise advised that, even
though property damage may be an issue,
the ordinance was meant to address the
safety of pedestrians. The amended
version will be presented for the second
reading of the ordinance at the next
Council meeting.
In other business, the Council unanimously approved the nomination of Don
Harmes as the City’s candidate for the
Tax Appraisal District board, and $5,000
was approved for an energy survey to
determine how to get the greatest return
on investment with the grant of $20,000
the City will receive from the State for
energy efficiency improvements.

The Big Coleman County Deer Hunters'

Hunters from all across Texas attended the banquet, where members from

amounts of brisket and sausage with all
the fixings. Everyone enjoyed a night of
great food, live music, free prizes, and

Citizens from Coleman attend Tea Party
Express
11/9/2009
Submitted by Anita Calk
The Tea Party Express came to Abilene on
Friday, Nov. 6th. A small contingent
from Coleman County went up to check it
out. Although it was a cool and windy
morning, we decided we couldn’t miss it.
There were really great speakers and
singers there, as well as vendors
selling flags, buttons & books (which
helps to pay for the fuel and expenses
of the nationwide tour).
The turnout was great, and the crowd was
really responsive. A special tribute was
held to men and women who had served in
each war and conflict, as well as the
men and women that are fighting today to
keep us free. Also, there a moment of
silence and prayer for the families
involved in the shooting at Fort Hood
the day before.
It was really a great reminder of the
principals that made this country great,
as well as the risk of losing the
freedoms that we have so long enjoyed.

The
Band and Ms. Harper
Submitted by
Tex Wright
11/9/2009
On Friday, the Mighty Mountaineer Marching Band paid tribute to one of
their more staunch boosters by appearing
in her front yard and playing for her.
Ms. Lois Harper, a backer of The Band
and most other things Mountaineer in
general, lives just across the street
from the Santa Anna High School. She has
been unable to attend games or boost the
band due to breaking her leg earlier in
the year. She walks with the help of a
cane and finds it difficult to climb
bleachers and grand stands. So –
Band director, Truitt Mitchell, and some friends, with cooperation from
the band students, put together this
public display of love and appreciation
for one of their more staunch boosters.
When The Band started playing, Ms Harper came to the door with a look of
surprise on her face. She stood and
listened for a few minutes until a chair
was provided.
The band played for her as she clapped then The Band closed with the
Mountaineer Fight Song.
After the group finished, there were several members of The Band standing
in line for their hugs.
Several friends were on hand to witness this event. Some of them had a
hand in the surprise.

Letter
to the Editor: Santa Anna High School
Veterans Day Ceremony
11/6/2009
To the
editor:
Veterans Day is upon us, and the senior
communication class at Santa Anna High
School has been hard at work to put
together a ceremony that will
acknowledge local veterans and soldiers
and their family members.
As I’ve mentioned in a previous letter,
this year’s ceremony will take place in
the auditorium at Santa Anna High
School. This space contains plenty of
seating and is much better suited to the
occasion than the gym, which we used for
the ceremony last year. We hope and
believe that everyone will be much more
comfortable in the auditorium, and will
be happy with the improvement in sound
quality and atmosphere.
The students of the communication class,
in partnership with the student council,
have taken full charge of this year’s
assembly. They have put together a
program full of variety and tribute that
speaks directly from their hearts to
those of veterans, soldiers, and their
families. Students will be actively
involved in every aspect of the ceremony
from helping people to their seats, to
delivering the closing thoughts at the
end of the program. They hope very much
that the community will be pleased with
and honored by their efforts.
This year’s program will take place this
coming Wednesday, November 11 at 10:00
a.m. and, as I mentioned before, will be
held in the auditorium. Those who wish
to attend may want to note that it is
not yet too late to add the names of
loved ones who have served to our list,
which will be read aloud during the
ceremony. They may pick up forms at area
businesses, or at Santa Anna High School
in the high school and secondary
offices. Those who cannot pick up a form
may email their loved ones’ names,
branches served, ranks, and years of
service directly to me at
caitlyn.tidwell@netxv.net. Completed
forms should be returned to the school
by Monday, November 9 to ensure that the
names are added.
We look forward to seeing everyone at
the ceremony, and to honoring those we
so admire and appreciate on this very
special day.
Sincerely,
Caitlyn Tidwell

Statement by Gov. Perry Regarding Fort
Hood Shootings
11/6/2009
AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today issued the following statement regarding
the shootings at Fort Hood:
“The Texas family suffered a significant loss today with the tragedy at
Fort Hood. Along with all Texans, Anita
and I are keeping those affected by
today’s incidents in our thoughts and
prayers.
“We are deeply saddened by today’s events, but resolve to continue
supporting our troops and protecting our
citizens.
“To honor those who lost their lives today, I have ordered that all Texas
flags be lowered to half-staff until
Sunday, and ask all Texans to pray for
the victims, their families and the
extended Fort Hood community.”
The governor has been in contact with military and state law enforcement
officials. To provide support at Fort
Hood, Gov. Perry directed the deployment
of a variety of state resources to the
area, including Texas Department of
Public Safety troopers, Texas Rangers
and helicopters, to assist in securing
the perimeter of the base and provide
other support as necessary.
The governor’s flag order applies to all U.S. and Texas flags under the
control of the state. Flags will be
lowered to half-staff on the State
Capitol Building, flag displays in the
Capitol Complex, and upon all public
buildings, grounds and facilities
beginning immediately until sunset on
Sunday, November 8th.
Individuals, businesses, municipalities, counties and other political
subdivisions are encouraged to fly the
flag at half-staff for the same length
of time as a sign of respect.

Summit
Christian Academy Chooses Matthew 25
Ministries for Mission Trip
11/6/2009
God has so blessed us, this past week Matthew 25 Ministries was the site
for a Mission trip. Summit Christian
Academy (SCA) (from Austin) had another
trip planned and when it fell through
one of the teachers (married to Barry’s
cousin) had a back up plan…us! The SCA
Elementary does inner city day missions,
the SCA Middle school does 3 day state
missions and the SCA High school does
country missions for a week. So 23
students.(7th grade) and 5 adults came
to the Cross Sunday afternoon and stayed
(camping out in the 1st building)
Wednesday afternoon. They started with
the DEVOtional Children’s Ministry doing
skits, each finding their little buddy.
The children had such a great time, and
asked them to join them on the bus ride
home. That night they joined us in
PRAYZE where Gabriel did the skit “How
low can you go?” Teaching about serving
others and Christ.
Monday SCA cleaned the grounds, trimmed trees and cleaned the clothing
ministry. That night the BattleCry teens
joined them in chapel. They led with the
game-show “The Price Is Right” and
talked about the value we put on
ourselves and others. The teens
responded is to Christ so valued you in
gave His life for you. Then in small
groups they shared in the hurt they had
experienced by the harsh words spoken by
parents, siblings and other students.
They were able to bring with them
showers in the way of 1st Baptist Church
Comanche Shower & Laundry Unit. It had 6
showers plus washer and dryer. Each
night more teens from Coleman joined in
chapel with SCA.
Tuesday they continued to clear the grounds, cleaning the clothing
ministry, and then taking fresh baked
gifts to the High Rise. They also
started the adventure of scraping and
painting 4 restrooms.
The great attitude of the students,
polite, respectful and hard working and
the joy of the adult leaders made this a
wonderful experience. Tuesday night
chapel one of the women spoke on her
experiences of abuse, then on her
experience of being free of
unforgiveness. One of the men spoke on
how humans choice of being sinful bring
pain and suffering but how our
relationship with Jesus brings us back
to God and to healing and change and for
His plan for us. Afterwards we went
outside to the half pipe and watched the
skateboarder’s remarkable skills.
Wednesday morning was devoted prayer
time and packing up to go home. I thank
God for this wonderful blessing of
bringing Summit Christian Academy to The
Cross!

Animal
Control Good News
11/5/2009
By Jo Ann Eddleman,
President, Humane Society of Coleman
County
The new 2010-2011 budget recently
approved by the Coleman City Council has
new fees for animal control activity.
The public should know there is no
longer a charge for the pickup of an
animal by Coleman Animal Control. This
is certainly good news from the Humane
Society’s viewpoint. Many people could
not afford the fee that had been in
effect to have an animal picked up. Not
that anyone wants a dog or cat to go to
the city shelter, but that is more
humane than having them dumped on a
country road to starve and most probably
be killed by wildlife or vehicles. If
they are just left to roam around here
in town, Animal Control will have to
spend time and money capturing them and
taking them to the shelter anyway or,
even worse, picking them up off the
highway.
The Humane Society would like to say ‘thank you’ to those who saw fit to
remove this repressive fee. We assume
this would mean City Manager Larry Weise
and Chief of Police Jay Moses. Thanks!
Pick up of stray animals by Animal Control is still limited to animals
that are within the city limits. This
applies to Coleman and to Santa Anna.
Santa Anna has recently established
animal control regulations, but it is
our understanding they do not charge a
fee to pick up an animal if asked to do
so by a citizen either.
Please do not dump your animals in the county! They at least have a
chance when taken to the shelters. The
Humane Society does everything it can to
save adoptable dogs from the shelters.
But, our resources to rescue are
limited. As much as we hate it, it is
better for strays and unwanted pets to
have a humane euthanization by trained
vets than to roam helplessly in the
streets.
The Humane Society appreciates the cooperation of Animal Control in
Coleman and Santa Anna in helping us
save adoptable dogs. Our hats are off to
Mona Watts and Harold Musick. Who would
want their job?! But they are both
caring and do what they can to see to it
the Humane Society knows what is
available at the shelters.
Other Coleman fees in effect for animal control are livestock pickup, $10
per animal; food & board while impounded
(non livestock), $10/day; food
livestock, $10/day; use of live animal
traps, no charge; pickup animals from
live traps, no charge.

Trash
Trees
11/5/2009
Submitted by Anita Calk
I am not an expert on anything, but I am curious about the world around
me.
My dad taught me to be interested in all
sorts of plants, animals, insects,
rocks, and just almost anything else
(except sports).
Our family had a place on the edge of town (E. Liveoak) on Hords creek
where we had a garden. My Dad, Dr.
Kemper, was often curious about the
strange trees that grew between there
and town. They also grow all over town,
mainly in untended places, where they
are completely invasive of the property.
They sort of resemble a pecan tree, but
don’t grow fruit. He didn’t have the
internet of course, and was never able
to identify the “trash trees” that he
called them. All through my life I have
also been interested in finding out
their names.
Finally, I have figured it out! It is called the “Tree of Heaven”… Boy is
it ever mislabeled! I’ve heard it called
all sorts of things, but this is the
correct name.
There is another tree that I noticed, mainly on the North side of town,
and in older parts of town. Again, I
wondered what on earth it was. Finally,
I have a name (I believe) It is called a
“Paper Mulberry.” It has dark leaves
that are scratchy on top and velvety on
the bottom. Some leaves are “lobed,”
(meaning they have fingers,...sort of)
and some are just sort of heart shaped.
Both of these trees have “male” and “female” trees, can spread by runners
under the ground or by seeds. They can
grow anywhere, and they crowd out the
native plants by drinking up the water
available. They are almost impossible to
discourage without poisoning them.
How I was able to identify them is from a website called invasive.org.
That site identifies anything invasive:
plants, animals, bugs, etc. There’s
another website called oplin.org and it
identifies trees by description.
Both of these trees were introduced and imported from Asia. I just
thought you might also be curious about
the strange trees growing in our town.
You’ve seen them all your life probably,
but may not have know what they were
called.
Of course, the most notorious trash trees around here are Mesquite and
Mountain Cedar. You have also probably
heard of Hackberry, Chinaberry, Mulberry
and Mimosa, all considered invasive.
Like I said before, I’m no expert, but I thought I would share my
observances with you in case you are
like me and say “I wonder what kind of
tree that is!!!” Look around and I bet
you will find them! Both of them are
within 3 blocks of the courthouse…
I still have some names of weeds that I’m looking for…

RED
HEELER NEEDS YOUR HELP
11/4/2009
This is
Pratt. Mona hopes someone will adopt
Pratt from the city shelter before it is
too late. She says he is a very nice dog
and gives every indication he’s been in
the house a lot and really knows how to
load up in the back of a truck. Pratt is
running out of time. Can you use a great
Heeler at your place? The Humane Society
pays 100% of the spay/neuter of any dog
adopted straight from the city shelter.

in November? We’ll have the dominoes
this time!
Bring a covered dish and your family for

definitely be plenty of good fellowship!

(Registered Annual Great Ride Across
Iowa) is the oldest, largest, and
longest bicycle touring event in the
world in which 1,500 riders tour for 7
days across Iowa and ends by dipping

front tire in Hords Creek over Halloween

County finding great chocolate, coconut,
and lemon pie at Big O's! They also
enjoyed a fun-filled weekend of camping
at Hords Creek where the guys showed off
their BBQ skills and we learned how to
cook a biscuit on a stick! An unexpected
visitor from Wisconsin, Captain Sparrow,
even brought trick or treat candy.
What's next for this adventurous group?

SANTA
ANNA GROCERY HALLOWEEN CONTEST
11/3/2009
The Santa Anna Grocery Store held a very
successful Halloween costume contest on
Halloween night. There were 84
contestants and all really cute. There
was one First Place winner and a tie for
Second Place.
The First Place winner was Jessica Haley. The two who tied for Second
Place were Jett Jones and Luke Kerr.
There were several whom we felt were Honorable Mention. Emily Milward,
Karlee Bradley, Kaydenece Strickland,
Jennifer Denis, and Neeley Bradley.
This was a first for Santa Anna Grocery and certainly a first for the
judge, Lois Harper. Photographers were
Vic and Martin. Everyone had a great
time coming and showing off their
children. Hopefully this will just be
the first of many years to come for the
Santa Anna Grocery Store and its owner
Vick Kysor. It is always really nice to
see a turn out with support from the
people in town and the store. It was a
lot of fun seeing the faces of each
participant and their little sacks open
for the goodies that were given each
child.

call at the High Rise

A car
left running by its owner oddly zipped
backwards in reverse and found itself
stuck halfway on the sidewalk and
halfway on Commercial Avenue. There was
a young lady in the car. However, she
was reportedly buckled in her seat when
onlookers rushed to the scene. No one
was hurt in the accident. The car
suffered some damage, but drove away
from the scene.
Heart
of Texas Chapter of the Daughters of the
Republic of Texas will hold its next
meeting on Monday, November 9
11/2/2009
The Heart of Texas
Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic
of Texas will hold its next meeting on
Monday, November 9, in the Striegler
Military Complex at the Heart of Texas
Historical Museum. The meeting will
begin at 3:00 PM and is open to the
public.
After the business meeting, a program will be presented by Shelly Perkins
about the Mission Santa Cruz de San Saba
and Real Presidio de San Saba, which,
ironically, are located in Menard County
near the town of Menard. At its peak,
from 1757 to 1768, the Mission and
Presidio were occupied by 300 Mexican
soldiers and their families, and were
the largest in the Mexican State of
Coahilla. There are still remnants of
the presidio (fort), which are open to
the public at no charge. Several
excavations under the guidance of the
Anthropology Department of Texas Tech
University have been completed there in
the last several years. It was only
during these excavations that the
location and remains of the Mission were
found. In 1831, Jim Bowie, who died in
the battle at The Alamo, was trying to
reach the ruins of the presidio, when
attacked by mostly Comanche Indians. His
name can still be seen carved in the
stones of the presidio – spelled,
“Bouie”
During the Month of November, the DRT also reminds us to honor Stephen F.
Austin, who was born in 1793 in the
state of Virginia. He died in Columbia,
Texas on December 27, 1836, while
serving as Secretary of State for the
Republic of Texas. Our capitol city,
Austin, is named in honor of him.
The DRT welcomes visitors and inquiries about the chapter. Associate
memberships are available. Additional
information is available from the
president, Sharon Purcell, at 597-2887
in Brady, and from the registrar, Jerry
Wilkinson, of Rochelle, at 243-5344.

SANTA
ANNA CEMETERY RECEIVES HISTORIC TEXAS
CEMETERY DESIGNATION
11/2/2009
Santa Anna, Texas — The Texas Historical
Commission (THC) recently designated the
Santa Anna Cemetery as a Historic Texas
Cemetery. The distinction means the
cemetery has been legally recorded
through the THC’s Historic Texas
Cemetery Program, an important step in
ensuring its preservation.
This designation is reserved for cemeteries that are at least 50 years
old and documented through the Historic
Texas Cemeteries process to record their
historic association and significance.
A dedication ceremony to commemorate this historic designation will be
held at the monthly meeting of the
Coleman County Historical Commission at
7:00PM on Thursday November 5th at The
Feed Store on the corner of North 1st
Street and Wallis Avenue.
“This designation is a tool that will increase public awareness of these
important cultural resources,” said
Larry Oaks, executive director of the
THC. “Knowledge and
education are among the best ways to
guarantee the preservation of a historic
cemetery.”
Coleman County Historical Commission Chairman, Tex Wright, added “This is
something that we needed in the
community.”
Cemeteries hold valuable historic information and they are often the last
reminders of early settlements’
historical events, religious beliefs,
lifestyles and genealogy. While the
Historic Texas Cemetery designation
encourages cemetery preservation, it
cannot guarantee that a historic
cemetery will avoid destruction. Threats
to historic cemeteries include urban
expansion and development, vandalism,
grazing animals and long-term
deterioration from weather and
uncontrolled vegetation.
The THC developed the Historic Texas Cemetery designation to address the
destruction of historic cemeteries and
the illegal removal of cemetery
fixtures. Any individual or organization
is eligible to submit an application for
this designation.
For additional information regarding Historic Texas Cemetery designation,
or to receive an application, contact
Annette Bethke of the THC’s History
Programs Division at 512/463-1305 or

preservation visit the THC’s web site at

The Section 9007 Rural Energy for
America Program (REAP) through USDA
Rural Development offers competitive
grant, guaranteed loans and combination
grant/guaranteed loans to help
agricultural producers and rural small
businesses purchase and install
renewable energy systems and make energy
efficiency improvements in rural areas.
Renewable Energy and energy efficiency systems provide a significant
opportunity for rural economic
development and growth. Renewable energy
is energy derived from wind, solar,
biomass, or geothermal source; or
hydrogen derived from biomass or water
using wind, solar, biomass or geothermal
energy sources.
Energy efficiency improvements are a tool for increasing farm or business
productivity while reducing costs.
Projects may include retrofitting
lighting or insulation, or purchasing or
replacing equipment with more efficient
units in existing facilities or new
replacement facilities. Some examples of
energy efficiency projects include:
grain dryer replacement, irrigation
systems, poultry house improvements, and

Animals, Ninjas, Princesses… Oh My!
Trick-or-Treating Downtown a Success
by Christine
Flynn
11/2/2009
On
Friday afternoon a hundred enthusiastic
kids were gathered in downtown Coleman
to trick-or-treat at local businesses.
The afternoon was not only successful
but the weather was perfect for the many
different costumes. From fuzzy animals
to storybook characters each kid seemed
so proud to show off their costumes. The
Coleman Business Association organized
their annual kids’ costume contest in
front of the gazebo downtown next to the
Humane Society’s own pet costume
contest.
Many parents expressed their enjoyment to take their kids
trick-or-treating in a safe environment
alongside other parents and the
convenience was also a bonus. It seems
that each year fewer children are out on
Halloween night, which leads to more
porch lights off in the neighborhoods.
Times have changed as most of us can
recall going out on our own and coming
back with a sack full of goodies.
Not only was the afternoon enjoyable for the kids but the adults and
businesses also took pleasure in seeing
all the smiling faces. It was great to
see the community come out to
participate and there is already
discussion for next year’s event.
Each contest winner was recognized with a ribbon. If you are a winner and
were not able to stay for your ribbon,
please come by Wise X-Press. The kids’
costume contest winners are the
following:
Best Storybook Character-Callie
Strickland as Raggedy Ann
Originality-Andre Madrigal as Dr. Atwood
Best Animal-Levi Dunlap as a horse
Best Duo-Deane and Alana Young as the
Princess and the Knight
Scariest-Jeffrey Edington as the Swamp
Monster
Best Monster-Tyler Ransberger as the
Werewolf
Best Action Hero-Paul Rosales as the
Blue Power Ranger
County
Commissioners Met to Deliberate Next
Steps
By
Christine Flynn
11/2/2009
The Commissioner’s Court met Friday
morning to discuss matters for approval
and next steps. The highlights from the
meeting included approval of an
equipment bid, a change in the monthly
meeting schedule, and a new candidate
for the Coleman County Tax Appraisal
District board member was announced. The
focal point of the meeting was the
deliberation on the flood prevention
program for Coleman County as previously
introduced at the last Commissioner’s
Court.
During the last few weeks, the Commissioners met with Jim Hudson from the
USDA Natural Resources Conservation
Service to survey a few sites to be
familiar with the work at hand. In order
to be awarded a $336,000 grant, the
county must complete approximately
$34,000 worth of in-kind work. The
Commissioners focused on formulating a
plan and next steps. Hudson brought the
reimbursement rate list given to him
which agreed by all was misleading. Each
activity considered for the in-kind work
is worth a specified rate. The court
expressed their need for clarification
before beginning on the first project.
Hudson and Jerry Allen on the board for
the Central Colorado Soil and Water
Conservation District Service also
desired a more concrete set of
guidelines. Hudson and Allen agreed to
gather more information and there will
be another discussion at the next
meeting.
The next objective to be considered for approval was presented by
Commissioner Billy Don McCrary and
Warren Cat representative from Abilene
for a used track loader for precinct 2.
The bid approved was for a 2005 model
with new parts, a trade-in, and 2 year
warranty for $71,000.
Judge Jimmie Hobbs is stepping down as a board member of the Coleman
County Tax Appraisal District. The Court
nominated Mike Stephenson as the next
representative and he accepted.
The Court also decided to change the schedule of their bi-monthly meeting
to better suit the monthly payment
schedule of bills. Effective immediately
the Court will meet the second and
fourth Monday of each month. Therefore,
the next meeting is scheduled for the
November 9th at 9:00AM.
Lastly, Susan Jacobs from the West Central Texas Council of Governments
visited to introduce the Court to
equipment and software that can help
them produce signs for their precincts.
The meeting adjourned with approval of bills for payment.
Coleman County Historical Commission

The Coleman County Historical Commission
will meet on Thursday Nov. 5, 2009 at

(Corner of 1st St and Wallis Ave).
We will have a short business meeting as mandated by our charter. After
the business meeting, we will welcome
James Pelton and the folks from the
Santa Anna Cemetery Assn. Getting the
Historic Cemetery designation is a boost
to the CCHC, Santa Anna, and Coleman
County.
We welcome all media members, guests interested in the history of the
area, and all members. Due to the
necessary business meeting, we need all
board members to be present. This
program will be held at "The Feed Store"
