Coleman County Producers Eligible for Disaster Payments
6/24/2008

FSA ACCEPTING EMERGENCY LOAN APPLICATIONS
Available to Coleman County for the following Designations:
Disaster Declaration #S2677 – Damages and Losses caused by fires and high winds that occurred January 1, 2008 and continuing. Applications are for Production and Physical Losses. Final day to apply for this Declaration is January 15, 2009.

Coleman County was declared eligible for Farm Service Agency (FSA) disaster Emergency loans. Generally, that means that farmers who have lost at least 30 percent of their production due to loss listed on these declarations during this time period and continuing are eligible for FSA loans. Proceeds from crop insurance are taken into consideration when determining eligibility.

FSA Farm Loan Manager, CYNTHIA P. KRUGER, is urging farmers who are interested in receiving an emergency loan to submit their applications into FSA as soon as possible. Ms. Kruger said, “We hope farmers will get their applications in early rather than waiting until near the deadlines. The longer they wait, the more chance there is for long delays. If the applications come in early, we can avoid backlogs and speed up the process.” The FSA office is located at 119 West Street, Coleman, TX. The telephone number is (325) 625-2290.

CCHC Has Busy June
6/22/2008

Local history and the business of history have kept members of the Coleman County Historical Commission (CCHC) busy the last few weeks at Heritage Hall, and they’ve more to do.  Edwina Early of Lawn, whose roots are in northwestern Coleman County, gave a very interesting program at Heritage Hall on the area around and including Silver Valley. She covered everything that was within ‘walking distance’ (by foot or by horse) of Silver Valley. Word has spread about her presentation and the CCHC has already had requests for details about the program.  Following that program, Maxine Cope treated CCHC members and guests to a tour of the newest additions to the Heritage Hall museum and the local photos displayed in the exhibit hall.  Tuesday night, CCHC board members Maxine Cope, Sue Frizzell, Eric Joffrion, Tex Wright and ad hoc member Virginia Powell met to cover CCHC business. Since all members present attended the last business meeting, minutes were not read and the group got right into new agenda items.  Maxine Cope, CCHC Treasurer, reported that she had a good visit with Kay Lemay, County Treasurer. Maxine said that the CCHC balance with the county was $565.25 and that the CCHC must have new budget numbers to the county by mid-July.  Tex Wright said that the next program would be on the Trickham area. Time and place to be determined at a later date. Sue Frizzell added that a program on the Burkett area will be presented in August.  Changes to the CCHC bylaws were discussed and many great ideas were presented. The proposed amendments to the local bylaws will be presented, in writing, at the next meeting for discussion. If there are no changes, these amendments will be voted on at the next meeting following the meeting where the written amendments are presented.  Due to time constraints, a motion was made and passed that the CCHC master plan agenda item be postponed until the next business meeting.

DPS Warns Residents About Alarm Salespersons, Installers and Companies
6/19/2008

The Texas Department of Public Safety is urging Texas residents to make sure that any alarm salesperson, company or alarm installer that they hire is licensed by the State of Texas.  "We urge anyone who is considering hiring an alarm company or installer to check whether they are actually licensed in Texas, as required by state law," said Capt. RenEarl Bowie of the DPS Private Security Bureau. "Alarm installers and salespersons are required to undergo a criminal background check before being licensed, to help ensure the safety of the public."  The Private Security Bureau has initiated investigations in Houston and San Antonio following reports that numerous unlicensed salespersons, installers and companies have been aggressively marketing their services to residents in those cities. Other cities may also have experienced an influx of these salespeople. DPS is working with the alarm industry trade associations to investigate these claims.

American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Drives Out Cancer
6/18/2008

More than 95,000 residents in TX will learn that they have cancer this year. For many of those residents, however, getting to the treatment they need may be a problem.

“One cancer patient requiring radiation therapy could need anywhere from 20 to 30 trips for treatment in six weeks,” said Linda Neill, the Health Initiatives Coordinator for the West Texas Region of the American Cancer Society. “A patient receiving chemotherapy might report for treatment weekly for up to a year. In many cases, a patient is driven to hospitals or clinics by relatives or friends, but even these patients must occasionally seek alternative transportation. That’s where Road to Recovery comes in.”

Road to Recovery is a program of volunteers who drive patients to treatment centers and home again. Your American Cancer Society needs more volunteers to insure that all patients have transportation when they need it.

“Road to Recovery volunteers arrange their own schedules, with some volunteering as little as one afternoon a month and others driving patients as often as twice a week,” Neill said. “We know that the high price of gas can be an issue for our volunteers and the American Cancer Society will provide some compensation for gas for our Road to Recovery Volunteers.”

If you have a car and some spare time, you can help someone keep a potentially lifesaving appointment. A training will be held on June 30 at the American Cancer Society office, 3228 College Hills Blvd. San Angelo. For more information and to obtain an application, please call 325-944-2500.

Rodeo Clowns a Big Part of the Show!
6/14/2008

With only two weeks left until the Coleman County Sesquicentennial Celebration excitement is at an all time high not only for the members of community but for the PRCA Rodeo Clowns as well. The PRCA Rodeo will take place June 19-21st but the celebration will be a week long affair and where ever there is a celebration you can sure to spot these clowns.  Rudy Burns. The name alone is legend among the PRCA ranks. Rudy, a Louisiana native and Mississippi transplant, has been entertaining rodeo crowds for thirty-six years. His comedy has long been the standard to which others measure themselves and often times you can see his influence in the newer acts in the PRCA. Not only a funnyman but an athlete as well Rudy has served as the WNFR barrelman as well as been awarded the Coors Man in-the-Can. Joining Rudy in the arena are bullfighters Clay Collins and Josh Rivinius. While you may see them take part in some of Rudy’s games they is nothing funny about the job they do during the bull riding. Josh, an exceptional bullfighter got his start in rodeo as a kid competing in Little Britches. As he got older and moved up the ranks competing as an all-around cowboy in the bareback, steer wrestling and roping events he decided to join the PRCA. It was then that he found his true calling in life, bullfighting, since then he has been a consistent figure at some of the PRCA’s larger events such as Lawton, OK and the Badlands Circuit Finals. While Josh was busy on the rodeo trail Clay was busy as a standout high school athlete more focused on baseball and football then rodeo. It wasn’t until Clay was in college that he realized his love of the sport of rodeo. He knew that was where his future was and it didn’t take long for him to make a splash as a PRCA Bullfighter. Most recently Clay has served as the 2007 Wrangler National Finals Bullfighter and was selected to work the 2008 Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo. This is a rare opportunity to see a trio of amazing men in action.

As festivities kick-off, plan on taking your kids to the Coleman Public Library on Thursday June19, at 2:00pm, for an up close encounter with these Heroes of Rodeo. Rodeo action begins on Thursday, June 19th and continues thru Saturday June 21st with all performances starting at 8:00pm.

CCMC FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS!
6/10/2008 (Contributed by Sue Titsworth)

The wind was blowing, and there was a slight hope of rain from the clouds overhead, but still the CCMC employees and the folks of the community came out to support the CCMC Employees Activity Committee Fundraiser.
While the net profit was not as good as last year, CCMC still counts it as a successful fundraiser because every dollar that can be put in the CCMC Equipment Fund is a dollar closer to the hospital getting the equipment needed to continue to give the best service possible to the people of Coleman and Coleman County.

The CCMC Employees Activity Committee and Coleman County Medical Center extend their thanks to all those who came out and enjoyed the barbecue and hot dogs and helped to raise money.

County / Local EDC's Favor Forming Railroad District
6/10/2008

Trains have passed through Coleman County for as long as most people can remember. But could a little known rail line with a hub mid-way between Coleman and Santa Anna be the key to the county's economic future?

In session Monday morning, Coleman County Commissioners listened to a presentation from John Helsley, Board Chairman for the Texas Alliance of Rail Districts. His purpose was to ask Commissioners to consider forming a Single County Rail District in Coleman County.

There are 44 rail districts in 86 Texas counties. "From an economic standpoint, you are a gateway to Mexico plus you (Coleman County) have dual rail service," Helsley said. In addition to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe line which goes northwest from Coleman, the line of interest is one formerly called the South Orient or San Angelo Junction. It starts between Coleman and Santa Anna and goes southwest and eventually ends up in Presidio. This line is also the closest straight line across Mexico to a deep water port on the Pacific Ocean called Topolobampo. The port connects northern Mexico states and is said to be the beginning of the international trade corridor.

With high gas and diesel prices, many companies are reviewing their method of transporting goods. Helsley believes railroads can meet the need that trucking can't. A Google search of South Orient found the following link to a running history of the rail line dating back to the late 1800's. The link is: http://railwaymuseumsanangelo.homestead.com/history.html

Coleman and Santa Anna Economic Development Corporations share the belief and stepped up to the plate each willing to pay for one third of the $25,000 ($8,333 each) it costs to do the paperwork to establish the rail district. The remaining third will come from the County and was approved by Commissioners Monday.

Helsley said he could have the paperwork ready for Commissioners to consider when they meet again at the end of this month. Before that, an inter-local agreement will be needed between Coleman and Santa Anna EDC's and the County. Once all that is done, Commissioners will vote for final approval to create the Rail District. Rail districts can sell bonds, are used for economic development, are operated by a seven member board appointed by Commissioners. You can learn more about rail districts and how they operate on the Texas Alliance of Rail Districts web-site at: http://www.gotrail.org/FACTS.html

Pioneer Ladies Tea Party for Sesquicentennial Event Tuesday
6/10/2008
Virginia Jamison, Friends of the Coleman Public Library, announces that at 2:00pm Tuesday, June 10th the Friends are hosting a “Pioneer Ladies Tea Party” in the Library Community Room, 408 Commercial Ave. Guests are urged to dress in period (pioneer) costumes. There will be a “Show and Tell” of teacups and saucers, old or new, and more than one set is welcomed. Each set will be identified as to owner and it’s history or origin. Prizes will be given for the prettiest, oldest and most unusual. There will also be a reading of an original letter of a Coleman pioneer lady to her friend concerning the conditions of that time.

Also a favorite program guest will return to the library. Sandy Whittley, from San Angelo will be giving a program speaking about Fred Harvey and Harvey Girls, the “Women who civilized the West.”

Fred Harvey established restaurants (eating houses) along the Santa Fe Railroad back in the 1870’s. Theses were places of refinement with gourmet food, silver, china, fine linens and beautiful glassware. They were a far cry from the ‘greasy spoons’ of the day. He advertised in the newspapers in the Northeast and Midwest as follows: “Wanted –young women, 18 to 30 years of age, of good moral character, attractive and intelligent, to e waitresses in Harvey Eating Houses on the Santa Fe Railroad in the West. Wages $1.50 per month with room and board. Liberal tips customary. Experience not necessary. Write Fred Harvey, Union Depot, Kansas City.”

This small ad brought over 100,000 exceptional young women to the West between 1873 and the 1950’s. They came to be known as the Harvey Girls, and they were the cream of the crop, but first and foremost, they were ladies. Sandy’s mother was a Harvey Girl in New Mexico from 1929 – 1931, and she will be talking about what it meant to be a Harvey Girl as well as about Fred Harvey and how he came from nothing to be one of the wealthiest and most influential men of his time.

Refreshments will be served to those present. Everyone is urged to attend this enjoyable Sesquicentennial event.

USDA ANNOUNCES CRP PERMITTED USE FOR LIVESTOCK FEED NEEDS
6/6/2008
Eligible CRP Acres Allowed to Hay and Graze; $1.2 Billion Forage Made Available.
Curtis L. Garrett, Executive Director of USDA’s Farm Service Agency in Coleman County today announced that USDA has authorized certain acreage enrolled under the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) to be available for hay and forage after the primary nesting season ends for grass-nesting birds.
"This action will provide much needed feed and forage while maintaining the conservation benefits from the nation's premier conservation program," said Garrett. "Eligible farmers and ranchers will be able to plan for harvest of forage after the end of the primary nesting season this summer."
Prices for most field crops have advanced to record or near record levels in recent months, reflecting strong demand, tight supplies and competition for acres. The increased demand for commodities and resulting higher prices has impacted the livestock industry in particular.
More than 24 million acres of land enrolled in CRP will be eligible for this critical feed use program. USDA estimates that this program will make available up to 18 million tons of forage worth $1.2 billion.
"In authorizing this critical use of CRP acres for forage, USDA is also taking strong measures to preserve CRP's environmental benefits," said Garrett.
Eligible land may not be hayed or grazed until after the end of the primary nesting season.
Also, some of the eligible land or forage of the land must be reserved for wildlife and any land that is used under this authority must have a conservation plan. In many instances, the removal of some of the grass cover will increase the diversity of the stand and provide long-term benefits for wildlife. Further, the most environmentally-sensitive land enrolled in CRP will not be eligible. The land will be subject to a site inspection to ensure compliance with the conservation plan. No rental payment reduction will be assessed on contracts being utilized for this critical use. However, a $75 fee will be charged to process the required contract modification.
Signup for interested CRP participants
began June 2, 2008, at local Farm Service Agency (FSA) offices. This modification for critical feed use is only for 2008. All forage use must be completed no later than November 10, 2008.
Under CRP, farmers and ranchers enroll eligible land in 10- to 15-year contracts with USDA's Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC). FSA administers CRP on behalf of CCC. Participants plant appropriate cover such as grasses and trees in crop fields and along streams. These plantings help prevent soil and nutrients from running into regional waterways and affecting water quality. The long-term vegetative cover also improves wildlife habitat and soil quality.

Additional details including Fact Sheets, Maps and statistics are available at http://www.fsa.usda.gov/conservation .

And the Winner is…
6/5/2008

Bill Drake won the drawing for the $100.00 of gas!  Thanks to everyone that supported The Community Wide Youth Ministry “BattleCry @ The Cross”.   If you are a teen or the parent or guardian of a teen you need to know that there are options in a world that seems so desperate for what is right and good, not just what feels good. Most of the teens in Coleman are unchurched; many are perishing. Teens need stability, need to know there will always ALWAYS be someone there for them. The Cross has always been there for you and The Cross of Matthew 25 Ministries is there for you now. BattleCry @ The Cross is a youth ministry unlike any other this community has seen. Our youth ministry team is made up of 10 dedicated Coleman residents that have a heart for our teens and want to be a part of their lives for many years to come. We won’t be leaving town because we have already found our home.  Barry and Maureen Wilson have been ministering to the community for more than 10 years and The Cross has been a place of safety and fun for kids and teens for over 5 years. BattleCry @ The Cross has been operating for the last three months and more than 50 teens have already experienced the fun and joy and fellowship that a youth centered worship service brings. The group has been to the Skillet concert in Abilene, spent two days at the BattleCry Rally in Dallas, fellowshipped at the lake, crashed a plane and captured a flag. Water balloons, food and prayers have combined to bring out the love that only Jesus can give, and He truly wants to give each of us that love.  BattleCry @ The Cross is not a church, it is not a religion and it is not a place for fear or loneliness. BattleCry @ The Cross is where we can lay our burdens aside and fellowship through singing, talking, praying and playing. It is a chance for all to be loved, to learn and to find out that there is more to this life than what we wear, where we live and who wants to be our friend. It is a place where Jesus is waiting for you to meet Him.

Road Warriors Bike-Fest a Success!
6/5/2008 (contributed)

The Coleman Bluecat Road Warriors First Annual Bike-Fest was held Sunday, June 1st at the City Park. There were approximately 60 people on hand for blood sugar checks, BMI calculations and to put their name in the drawing for the free bicycle that was donated by Coleman Medical Associates. Jane Metty was the winner of the Towney 7 speed bike. Dr. Paul Reynolds, bike club president, presented facts about health, fitness and obesity in the city and county of Coleman, and that obesity, diabetes, and other health issues could be controlled by exercise. He is proof of that, having lost 40 pounds since February just by riding his bike instead of driving his vehicle.
Riding your bike just back and forth to work each day can burn calories, save fuel and help to control those medical problems. Several bike club members, as well as some of the visitors there, committed to riding their bike to work several days a week.
Snacks of bananas, oranges and cookies were on hand along with plenty of water and everyone had the opportunity to ride all the different style bikes available and to ask any questions they had about riding, health or fitness.
Members present from the Coleman Bluecat Road Warriors Bike Club were Paul, Becki, Jack and Reagan Reynolds, John, Tammy and Cheyenne Casey, Mike & Evyonne Curry, Berry Phillips, and Gary Strickland.
Group rides will be held on Saturday mornings at 8:00 AM and Tuesday Evenings at 6:00 PM. We meet at the back of the hospital by the stairwell doors and leave from CCMC parking lot. We will go eat afterwards and you do not have to be a club member to join us for these rides. You may ride only a few blocks or a few miles, but come join us! It's fun to ride together and you may be surprised at how far you can ride and how much better you will feel!
Next bike club meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday, June 9th at CCMC board room on the second floor of the hospital. If you ride any amount at all and just want to come and be encouraged to keep riding or get more health tips, the public is invited to attend any of our meetings or group rides at any time. Contact any of the above members if you have more questions.

Dear Friends and Family,
I hope all of you are doing well! I will begin nursing school in August at the University of Texas at Arlington. I feel so blessed to have been accepted into the program. Two hundred applicants are interviewed and out of those 200, only 100 applicants are accepted. For the next 2 years, I will be working on earning my RN/BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing), and plan to graduate May 2010. Jeremy will be a senior this next school year! So far, his plans are to attend Texas State University in San Marcos and major in Radiology. Until then, he has a full year ahead of him.
A once in a lifetime opportunity has arisen for my brother and I! On July 12, 2008, we will be leaving for New York for one week. First Baptist Church of Arlington is taking a group of young adults to Brooklyn to help run a Kid's Camp and Friday Night Cookout with Park Slope Baptist Church. The Kid’s Camp will be Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. God has given us an amazing opportunity to share His love with the children of Brooklyn! God tells us in Matthew 28 verse 19 to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to observe all things I have commanded, and lo, I am with you always, even to the ends of the earth.” God has not only given Jeremy and I an opportunity to impact these children's lives, but also a chance to join in His work which we are commanded to do, not out of obligation but out of love.
The trip is being funded entirely through donations and by those going on the mission trip. We are excited about the opportunity to serve and to minister, and we ask you to join us in ministry. We are seeking your support and prayers for this mission trip. If you are able to assist with this trip in anyway, we would ask that you forward any donation to us. Through your donations, you are taking part in changing the lives of these children forever. If you have any questions feel free to contact Ashley at (325)214-1688 or by email at ashley05j@yahoo.com.
We thank you so much in advance for your prayers and your financial support. If possible, please send your donations no later than July 1st. Thanks for helping make this trip possible. May God bless you and your family!
With love,
Ashley and Jeremy Jameson

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
6/4/2008

It is so nice to be appreciated!! Our Coleman County First Responders Organization received a very generous $500.00 check from the Coleman Rodeo Association for our help over the last several years. For many years, our members volunteered their time to help CC EMS with the rodeos. Now, several of our members are employed with CC EMS.
It is always nice when someone we help out at an accident scene or with their medical needs gives us a "Thank You", but when they do it in the form of a written letter or a donation, it is especially nice to know they took the time to recognize us.
Since we are an organization that only receives funds thru donations and fund raisers, all donations are greatly appreciated!
So, a very big THANK YOU, to the Coleman Rodeo Association for showing your appreciation to our Coleman County First Responder Organization and our local EMS service!
Evyonne Curry, Secretary
Coleman County First Responders Organization

Rodeo Clowns a Big Part of the Show!
6/4/2008

With only two weeks left until the Coleman County Sesquicentennial Celebration excitement is at an all time high not only for the members of community but for the PRCA Rodeo Clowns as well. The PRCA Rodeo will take place June 19-21st but the celebration will be a week long affair and where ever there is a celebration you can sure to spot these clowns.  Rudy Burns. The name alone is legend among the PRCA ranks. Rudy (pictured left) , a Louisiana native and Mississippi transplant, has been entertaining rodeo crowds for thirty-six years. His comedy has long been the standard to which others measure themselves and often times you can see his influence in the newer acts in the PRCA. Not only a funnyman but an athlete as well Rudy has served as the WNFR barrelman as well as been awarded the Coors Man in-the-Can. Joining Rudy in the arena are bullfighters Clay Collins (left) and Josh Rivinius (right).

Ceremony Honors Legendary Texas Ranger
6/2/2008

The ruins of Camp Colorado are located on County Road 140 in eastern Coleman County. A State of Texas marker tells of its history. A short distance past the cemetery, through a gate and hidden in the trees, lies the beautiful, well kept, Camp Colorado Cemetery.

The cemetery was the site this past Saturday morning of a special ceremony honoring Captain John M. Elkins. Elkins was a Texas Ranger, Civil War veteran, Indian fighter and first sheriff of Coleman County.  At 6' 7" tall, Elkins lived to be 90 years old.

George Frasier of Coleman, shown left
, former Texas Ranger, had the honor of unveiling a Texas Ranger Cross at the grave of Elkins. The crosses are provided by the Former Texas Rangers Association and Foundation.

In attendance were Thelbert and Winston Elkins of Coleman, grandsons of Captain John Elkins, and other family members (pictured above). In all, around 60 people attended to help honor a man who helped tame this county in the mid 1800's.

Ziggy is a 40-pound foster dog that would like to meet you at the Courthouse lawn this Saturday. He’s a handsome lab/Aussie or red heeler mix that is very gentle and sweet. The Humane Society spays or neuters all the dogs in their rescue program regardless of size.

This free event does not require any verification of financial need. However, the Humane Society hopes that those who can afford to budget for the spay/neuter for their dog will not sign up for this free voucher. The Humane Society can take advantage of funding by the DJ&T Foundation (founded by Bob Barker of Price is Right fame) if those who sign up for the voucher this Saturday can contribute even a token $1.00 for the voucher, but a donation is not required.

In addition, our own Coleman County Foundation has been kind enough to grant the Humane Society $2,500 to help fund this year’s free spay/neuter events. There will be another free spay/neuter event in September when thirty cats and another ten dogs of any size will be eligible for a free voucher.
The thrift store at 109 West Pecan and the furniture outlet at 110 East Pecan are the major sources of funding for the spay/neuter program that is offered year-round to qualified low-income families. The year-round discounted spay/neuter offer will pay up to 75% of the procedure for qualified low-income families and up to 50% for anyone who applies regardless of financial need. Applications for the discounted voucher are available at the stores or call the Humane Society at 625-4724.

Please participate in this free event and help the Humane Society reduce the number of homeless large dogs in our area. Just because your dog is fenced or chained in no way guarantees it will not breed or be bred. SPAY/NEUTER!

CJH Student Receives Honor
6/1/2008 (contributed)

Outstanding Texas 5th-8th grade students from across the state have been selected to participate in Education in Action's summer 2008 Lone Star Leadership Academy programs. Charlie Thomas (pictured left), son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Thomas of Coleman, has been selected from Coleman Junior High to attend the Houston/Galveston Leadership conference this summer. Selection for the Lone Star Leadership Academy is based on a student's demonstrated academic success and leadership ability, an educator's recommendation and the student's involvement in school/community activities.
During the weeklong residential Lone Star Leadership Academy programs, selected students join delegations of other distinguished students from across the state to develop leadership skills while learning about the great state of Texas. Participants experience what they are learning in school through visits to historically, politically, scientifically, and environmentally significant sites. Career speakers introduce participants to a wide variety of unique career and internship opportunities. Charlie Thomas will be an either grade student at Coleman Junior High in the fall.
