COLEMAN FINE ARTS LEAGUE FEB. DEMO BY GINGER TEST
1/29/2009
Ginger Test, of Novice, Texas is an avid photographer who gathers her inspiration from nature. She is a watercolorist, who paints realism with a hint of impressionism. Her unique contemporary style features subjects such as cowboys and life in West Texas, as well as wildlife, churches, flowers and Indian pottery.   One of her favorite subjects is hummingbirds and she has even received mail addressed to the Hummingbird lady, Novice, Texas. These paintings are rendered with the painstaking detail for which she has become famous.

Since, 1982, Ginger has shared her knowledge by teaching workshops for those who want to learn the art of watercolor. She regularly teaches workshops in Alpine, (March), Pampa (April) Mason Wildflower Workshop (April 17 & 18th), Mason County Fall Workshop (Oct 30-31) and a week long Colorado Gold Workshop in South Fork, Colorado (Sept 14-18th). Mrs. Test teaches weekly classes in Abilene, Brownwood, Coleman and San Angelo.  She is a noted demonstrator and lecturer. She particularly loves the reaction and enthusiasm of the children at the Stars of Texas.  Ginger and her husband live in a refurbished school house perched atop a small hill west of Novice. They've turned this into a charming home, retreat, wildlife habitat and art studio. Their small ranch keeps them occupied with twice daily visits of white-tailed deer, two cats, a Great Pyrenees and two horses. Hundreds of books and a stuffed black bear complete the comfortable den.

Ginger has had many one woman shows such as The Coleman museum (March 2008), Ruiz Gallery in San Angelo (June 2008), Artist of the Month for the Abilene Creative Arts Club (Dec 2008) and the Scott and White Gallery in Temple. Her paintings are displayed in homes and offices throughout the United States, Japan, Germany and Switzerland. Upcoming demonstrations are Coleman Fine Art League (Feb 19th), Brazos West Art Association (May 2009), Comanche Art Association (May 2009) and just finished a demonstration for the Abilene Creative Arts.

Mrs. Test had 3 paintings accepted into the Coleman Dragon Fly juried show and was an accepted artist in the Stars of Texas in 2008. She is a member of the Brownwood Art Association, Coleman Fine Arts League, Abilene Creative Arts and The Texas Midwest Artists of Ballinger.  Ginger can be contacted at 325-723-2035 or ttest_1957@yahoo.com.

A BIG THANK YOU FROM THE HUMANE SOCIETY—ARF!
1/29/2009 (Submitted by Jo Ann Eddleman)
We have left 2008 behind and are looking forward now to 2009. Your Humane Society had an eventful 2008. It was our first full year of operating our thrift store and we couldn’t be more pleased. We know now that once we recover from the expense of repairing the buildings at 108 and 110 West Pecan we will be able to rely on the proceeds from the thrift store to fund our spay/neuter program.

The buildings at 108 and 110 were donated to us, and we hope to be occupying the buildings as an expanded thrift store and furniture outlet sometime in late spring. In turn, we plan to expand the spay/neuter program to reach even more people who want to be responsible pet owners. We will have many new features at the “new” thrift store. In the meantime, come by to visit Nelda at our current location at 109 West Pecan. We appreciate you!

We also appreciate each and every one of you who has seen fit to spay or neuter your cat or dog through our program. Including the free pet calls we have each year, we have helped with the spay/neuter of 215 dogs and cats in our county in 2008.   In addition to our primary attention to the spay/neuter program, we have also rescued 111 dogs and found new homes for these deserving pets. We get email and pictures nearly every week from our adopting families letting us know how happy they are with their new dogs. It warms our hearts. Our rescue program supports itself with the fee for each adopted dog. The fee helps us cover the veterinarian costs we incur on each rescue.

In case you haven’t visited our web site at www.HumaneSocietyCC.com , please make a note to check us out at least once or twice a month. We try to keep the web site current with all the news, and we hope to start carrying “specials” you will find at our thrift store. We will also be promoting our Dog Mayor campaign for 2009-2010. The web site will tell you all about it. Get that furry candidate ready to hit the campaign trail!   The web site also carries our membership roll and the donations that are made to the Humane Society. Thank you to all who have made donations and memorials, including pet memorials, in memory of or in honor of your animal-loving friends in 2008.

Our membership for 2009 has reached 100. The 2009 membership drive extends through February. If you have forgotten to renew or would like to join us to show your support for the Humane Society’s efforts, please pick up the membership form at the thrift store or download it online. Individual/family membership is $10 and businesses $25.   In addition to our members, donors and shoppers, we must also thank the Friends of the Coleman County Foundation and the Coleman County Foundation for their generous grants that have been instrumental in helping with making ready the donated buildings and with our free spay/neuter pet call expenses. We are so grateful for their consideration! And the Coleman County State Bank will always be at the top of our list for offering us the use of an empty building to get our thrift store up and running.

THANKS TO ALL who have supported the Humane Society of Coleman County during our first five years! We are looking forward to an even more exciting five years to come.

FRIDAY'S Update on the Tire Story
1/30/2009

The highway department has COMPLETED
the cleanup of tires from FM 1176 and FM 2302, and Colemannews.com would like to thank them personally!

We at Colemannews.com have received numerous emails in regard to the story placed online on Tuesday morning.  There are apparently many more dump-sites of tires in the county.  The City of Coleman has received grants and funds to work on the problem within the city limits.  They have made great strides.  However, they are not able to do the same throughout the county.  We hope that all Coleman County residents will keep a watchful eye for any future trashing of Coleman County.

Tires Still Being Dumped in Coleman County
1/27/2009

Sometime between 6:00pm and 10:00pm Monday night, over 100 tires were dumped on FM 2302 and FM 1176 northeast of Coleman. I know it's over 100 because I lost count as I was driving the county roads this morning. I also saw an orange nylon rope that was apparently untied and thrown off where the dumping began. The pictures above show one spot on FM 2302 with tires on both sides of the road. The other tires were strategically thrown from some vehicle every 15 yards or so. FYI - when the side of the road needs mowing later to prevent a fire hazard, the county will have a difficult time doing so (if they attempt it at all) because running over those tires will damage their vehicles. If you have any information on who may have "discarded" tires Monday evening, please call the Sheriff's office. There are proper methods of disposing tires. Please contact the City to find out how.

Coleman County Extension Education Association
1/26/2009
 (contributed)
The Coleman County Extension Education Association clubs would like to thank everyone who helped make the concessions at the county stock show a success. A quilt raffle fundraiser concluded Tuesday following the stock show sales. The quilt was made by one of our own members, Peggy Willetts and was won by Tim Humpert of Santa Anna. Mr. Humpert stated he was thrilled knowing his wife would be ecstatic about the quilt. Managing the concessions at the county stock show is one of several fundraisers we sponsor each year. We host the annual Holiday Fair as well as each club raising funds throughout the year. The Good Neighbor club sells RADA cutlery and this year the Gouldbusk Homemakers club produced a cookbook. There are a few cookbooks left. The cookbooks cost $10 each and are still available at the Extension office located in the courthouse and the Chamber of Commerce. Get one before they’re all gone! Proceeds from our fundraisers go toward the 4H Scholarship we give to a local student each year. The Gouldbusk Homemakers club also donates money to the Gouldbusk Community Center for needed repairs. We would not be able to provide a scholarship without the community support given to us and we are so very thankful for it.   Finally we would like to invite you to get to know us better. Talk to a member, visit a club meeting or you may contact the Extension office for details on meeting times and places. Currently there are two clubs in the county. The Gouldbusk Homemakers club meets the second Thursday of each month in member homes or at the Gouldbusk Methodist Church Fellowship hall and the Good Neighbor club meets on the first and third Friday’s of each month at the Coleman State Bank 3rd floor meeting room. We enjoy learning new things and having lots of fun. We’d love to have you join us.

DID SOMEONE SAY “CHANGE?”
1/26/2009

The word “change” seems to be the buzz-word these days. The Fine Arts League is going to bring you ‘change’ that will enrich and inspire you with Fine Art in October, 2009.

The Fiesta de la Paloma Fine Art Show is 18 years old this year. It’s “all grown up” now. The Fiesta Art Show will happen again (good Lord willing), as it has for the past 17 years, this year on the 2nd & 3rd of October, 2009 during the Chamber of Commerce Fiesta de la Paloma celebrating the dove hunting season in Coleman County.

The ‘Change’ word for 2009 will be J U R I E D!!!   FIESTA JURIED FINE ART SHOW. Coleman has experienced the excitement in 2007 and 2008 with a juried show, prestigious judges with impressive credentials to “Jury” the artwork that was to be exhibited in the “Flight of the Dragonflies” May, 2007 (Ann Templeton, New Mexico) and “Dragonfly Journeys” in May 2008.(Tom Lockhart, Colorado).  Now, a new chapter will be added to the Scrapbook of Memories for 2009 - New faces, new ideas and certainly new enthusiasm. The Fine Arts League 32 plus-member strong and growing, invites anyone who would like to be a part of the adventure for 2009 to talk to a member, especially Show Co-chair Kathy Andrews & Kay Mitchell.

Any and all talents are welcome and encouraged to join in the Coleman County effort to “make its mark with art”. Watch for news about the Fiesta Juried Fine Art Show 2009 as future plans are developed. The Fine Arts League solicits your Support again!!

Coleman County Red Bud Trail Project Update
1/26/2009

The Town & Country Garden Club has been overwhelmed with your response to our latest Coleman County Redbud Trail project. It is very exciting to have so much support from our community. As the trees mature, the display of their vibrant springtime blooms is going to be spectacular.

Two sizes are available for purchase: one-gallon containers for $15 and three-gallon containers for $20. To place your order, please contact Eileen at 325-624-5503, or any garden club member. Answering machine messages will be returned as promptly as possible.
Delivery will be on Saturday, February 21.
Pick up point will be at the Mrs. J.A.B. Miller Building on the courthouse square. Payment will be required at the time of pick up.

Consider planting trees at your home, place of business, or perhaps at a public site such as parks, public schools, nursing homes, or churches. The City of Coleman has again given permission for trees to be planted at the City Park and the City cemetery, under the supervision of Public Works Director Bob Ray. In addition, consider locations such as gates or cattle guard entrances to your Coleman County property fronting any of the US and State highways or County roads.

The Redbud Registry was started during the 2007 Sesquicentennial Celebration and is maintained at the Coleman Chamber of Commerce office. The Registry lists the names of persons who purchased trees and the names of those for whom the trees represent memorials or honorariums, as well as the location of where the trees are planted. We welcome your memorials and honorariums again this year and will add them to the Registry. In addition, they will be published in the newspaper and on web sites.

An accident at the old South Ward school gym near Hufford Field occurred during the CHS lunch break last Friday. The vehicle driven by a sixteen year old female was driving at a high rate of speed on South Neches traveling south. The vehicle crossed the intersection of South Neches and West 5th Street and slid across the parking lot of the old gym, hitting the side of the gym wall with the right side of the vehicle. As the picture above shows, it knocked a large hole in the wall. There were six Coleman High School girls in the vehicle. Two of them were transported by Coleman County Medical Center EMS. Many Improvements Planned in '09 at Coleman Municipal Airport
Fence to be Constructed, Jet Fuel to be Offered

1/23/2009

The Coleman Municipal Airport is scheduled for several improvements this year.

When the weather warms up this spring, the Texas Department of Transportation aviation division is scheduled to put a new seal coat surface over the entire airport. Once that is taken care of, the newly installed fuel farm will become operational. The new fuel tanks (
shown below
) are already in place and double the current capacity for gasoline storage. In addition to self-service gasoline, the airport will also offer self-service and full-service jet fuel.

Another upgrade expected in the near future is a game / security fence around the perimeter of the entire airport. This will make the airport more secure, but will also keep wild game from wandering onto the runway which is especially dangerous for night landings.  Pilots (and their insurance companies) would rather land at airports where game fences insure a higher degree of safety.

Of note is that local taxpayers aren't out any money to pay for the improvements. The fuel farm was funded through an insurance adjustment claim while the game fence is a 90/10 match.  The State of Texas pays 90 percent of the cost while the city's 10 percent was funded by users of the airport, instead of city tax dollars.

Also expected to be installed late this year is an AWOS system. AWOS, which stands for Automated Weather Observing System, allows pilots flying to and from Coleman Municipal to tune-in to the local transmitter and receive current weather information, such as wind direction and speed, temperature and more. The information helps pilots make better decisions and improves safety. The AWOS will also be available for area TV stations to use during their weathercasts as the Coleman readings will become part of the national network of AWOS stations.

City Honors Berry and Burdick

It has become customary at Coleman City Council meetings for employees of the city to be recognized for their service. Thursday night, two such employees were honored, both with 15 years of service to the citizens of Coleman.

Nancy Berry
began her duties as Office Clerk/Customer Service Representative in the Utility Office on January 3, 1994.  Through the years she has completed many training sessions and courses associated with the City’s software company, Incode, which include Utility Account Management, Utility Adjustments, Utility Average Monthly Payment (AMP), Utility Contracts and Arrangements and a Texas Municipal League Ethical Decision Making for Public Safety Course.

In 2005 Nancy was promoted to Utility Office Manager and has managed that office since then.  "Since becoming Utility Officer Manager she has raised productivity and professionalism in that department. Nancy communicates in detail with the customers about their accounts.

She works well with the public and always seems to remember who owes the City a bad debt," said Mayor Nick Poldrack.  Nancy is pictured above with the Mayor.

Randy Burdick
began his employment with the City of Coleman on January 1, 1994 as an apprentice operator at the Water Filtration Plant.

In 1995 he received his Class D license which promoted him from apprentice to operator status. Randy learned quickly the operation of the water plant. He learned maintenance and repair of the valves, pump and motors.

He continued his education and received his Class C Surface Water license in September 1996. Randy has learned the treatment of the water and can do all the water tests that must be performed at the water plant.

Randy, pictured above with Mayor Poldrack, has also completed a program in Water Distribution System Operation and Maintenance.

"Randy is a dependable and well liked employee and an integral part of the Water Production team. You can always count on him to show up and work his shift," said Mayor Nick Poldrack.

FIRST RESPONDERS DONATE GPS SYSTEM TO CCEMS
1/22/2009
The Coleman County First Responders Organization held their annual “after Christmas” Christmas party at Caroline’s Coldwater Cattle Company on Tuesday, January 20. Those present were the following members and their spouses, John & Frankie Gregg, Kenny & Nivla Moore, Mike & Evyonne Curry, Jeff & Betty Roberts, Russel & Angela Thomas, Stephen Sharp and guest, Rob Wilson.

A great time was had by all, and after an excellent meal of steak and appetizers, the CCFRO presented the Coleman County EMS with a Garmin GPS unit for the primary ambulance unit. This GPS will enable the EMS system in answering 911 calls in the county at some of the hard to reach addresses, as well as when transferring a patient to a hospital in larger cities, such as Fort Worth, Dallas or other large metro areas. The GPS system allows you to input an address or county road and it will show a map, as well as give voice activated directions to that address. It will also show the exact mileage to the location which will assist with billing purposes.

The CC EMS has a total of 3 ambulances and this will allow one to be equipped with this type of GPS capability. The CCFRO would like to invite other business entities or organizations to donate 2 more GPS units to CC EMS for the other ambulances, so they can all have this capability. I am sure they would be greatly appreciated!

COLEMAN COUNTY REDBUD TRAIL IS BACK
1/20/2009

Everything is coming up redbuds once again! The Town and Country Garden Club has located a supply of native Texas redbud trees and are offering two sizes for sale: trees in a one-gallon container are $15 and the three-gallon size are $20. To place an order, please contact Eileen at 325-624-5503, or any garden club member. Answering machine messages will be returned as promptly as possible. Delivery will be on Saturday, February 21. Pick up point will be at the Mrs. J.A.B. Miller Building on the courthouse square. Payment will be required at the time of pick up.

According to our Gardening 101 expert and Master Gardener, Mr. Ernie Yates, this is the prime time of year to plant trees in Texas. It gives the roots a head start to settle in before the hot, dry temperatures of summer.

As before, the Club’s goal is to have our County residents and businesses plant redbud trees to create a beautiful corridor of blooms throughout Coleman County.

School Board Meeting Includes Elementary UIL Recognition
1/20/2009

Thursday night's Coleman ISD School Board meeting had a packed house of parents and students. All the Elementary UIL winners were congratulated and recognized for their efforts. As names were announced each student came forward to receive a plaque and ribbon from Mrs. Amy Chambers, Coleman Elementary teacher, and Jody Payne, school board member. (More pictures may be seen on the "Faces in the Crowd" page.) Board members present at the meeting were President Mike Edington, Jody Payne, John Casey, Viki Hambright, Mark Martinez. Also attending were Superintendent Royce Young, Lorrie Payne, and principals Richard Holloway, Paula Ringo, and Becky Jackson. There were several other guests and speakers as indicated in the following.

Following the student recognition, auditor Don McKee of Reed, McKee & Co, P.C. Certified Public Accountants in San Angelo, gave his 2007-2008 Audit Report. He went through the main portions of the report with the Board, explaining each section and it's particulars. He stated that, "Coleman ISD had the best set of controls on spending of any of the seven schools he audits." He said it makes their auditing process easier. He gave commendation to Karen Huff, Business Manager, and Royce Young for their work and assistance with the audit. The Board accepted the Audit unanimously and thanked Mr. McKee for his time and efforts. The next guest to speak was Sherri Merrill, of Coleman Jr High. She told the Board about the visit to Austin that she, several other staff members and four students were going to make on January 28th and 29th. The "Texas Capitol Schoolhouse Foundation" will facilitate actual school classrooms in the basement of the Capitol Rotunda using education technology for bettering learning environments. Mrs. Merrill will be joined by Paul Martin, Gary Strickland, Paula Ringo and students Gabby Roberts, Eric Villeda, Anthony Thomas and Sarah Wickson. They will be set up in the Rotunda showing the different uses Coleman ISD has for the technology they have obtained through State funds.

High school principal Richard Holloway then introduced Sarah Mason (right) , Web Design teacher at CHS, and Paul Martin (right), Technology Director for CISD, who made a presentation to the Board showing them what the Vision 2020 Grant money was helping to buy. They also wanted to let the Board see what was purchased by the school district, with approval from the board. Mrs. Mason demonstrated the uses of an Interwrite Pad and Document Camera that are being used at the High School by teachers now. The Interwrite Pad can be carried around the classroom by the teacher (or students) and interacts with the laptop attached to a projector. The Docu-Cam attaches directly to the laptop and projector and actually projects a visual image of anything placed under it. (books, papers, notes, science lab items, etc.) She definitely proved that the equipment enhances teaching and learning in the classroom.

Other items on the agenda were to call for an election on Saturday, May 9th for Places 4 and 5, being held by Sue Sloan and Brent McMillan respectively. This was approved. The Superintendent's evaluation was postponed until a later date due to the absences of two board members. Curriculum Director Lorrie Payne spoke to the Board about a proposed change in the use of a curriculum by CISD. She reported that meetings at the Service Center in San Angelo have produced a possible option for a new curriculum - C-Scope, an internet-based curriculum. It would include vertical alignment and bundled lessons that the curriculum in use at the present time does not include. She reminded the board that English/Language Arts will be receiving new TEKS next year, and this new curriculum does contain these new expectations. After discussing the "Board Team Building" Training to be attended by some board members, and School Finance, Supt. Royce Young recognized the Board of Trustees for their efforts and time this school year. He personally thanked each one and gave them each a plaque of appreciation.

Coleman County Jail Fails Inspection
1/16/2009
When the very first criminal was placed behind bars in the Coleman County Jail, Benjamin Harrison was the President of the United States. The year was 1890, or 119 years ago. Until yesterday, the jail had always passed inspection.

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has been making annual inspections at Texas jails since the late 1970's. The Coleman County Jail
(Pictured right -
Colemannews.com photo),
which has a state historical marker, is one of the oldest continually in use in Texas. Previous inspections have led to upgrades and most of this year's report was positive, except in one area.

Jackie Semmler, TCJS inspector, determined there were not enough corrections officers for the number of inmates housed. The report says: "After reviewing the average daily population reports for the past twelve months and reviewing the staffing rosters, it was determined that there is only one officer per shift on certain shifts. The average daily population report reflects that the facility has, at times, housed 10 or more inmates in the facility and the officer leaves the floor to conduct various tasks." The standard also states "Inmates shall be supervised by an adequate number of corrections officers to comply with state law and these standards. One corrections officer shall be provided on each floor of the facility where 10 or more inmates are housed, with no less than one corrections officer per 48 inmates or increment thereof on each floor for direct inmate supervision."

Wade Turner, County Sheriff, explained that the jail is rated to hold a maximum of 15 inmates. Complicating matters, is the fact that the jail is multi-story, and law requires male and female inmates be separated by sight and sound. "Typically, we hold 13 or 14 people in the jail. Any over-population goes to Runnels County or Taylor County jails," Turner said. In a multi-story facility with 10 or more inmates on one floor, that floor requires a jailer 24 hours a day." Besides making rounds and checking on the inmates, jailers also prepare meals, do inmate laundry, answer phone calls, conduct visitation, recreation, assist people who come to the jail, all of which occurs on the first floor of the jail requiring them to leave the 2nd floor where inmates are housed.

The inspector also recommended repairs to a couple of the cells but the county was not found out of compliance in that area. The inspector found that the jail records were kept in good shape, that all life safety equipment passed inspection and that no fires, deaths, suicides or walk-a-ways occurred at the jail since the last inspection.

Accordingly, Sheriff Turner will receive a letter from the Texas Commission on Jail Standards to officially notify the county of the jail being in non-compliance. From the day the sheriff receives the letter, the County will have 30 days to take corrective action. Turner said he will ask County Commissioners for additional manpower to comply with state standards. In the report, Inspector Semmler wrote the following: "A plan, concurred in by both commissioner's court and sheriff's department, which provides for adequate and reasonable staffing of a facility, may be submitted to the Commission for approval."

The county currently employees a total of six jailers.

HOLIDAY HILL SET FOR EXPANSION
1/16/2009

Holiday Hill, Inc., a not-for-profit locally operated nursing home is nearing completion of their 3-year USDA loan process.  The 85 year old local business will team up with Coleman County State Bank on the project for 50 percent of the loan.  Architect for the project is Paul Rheinlander of Rheinlander and Associates from Austin.  The nursing home is pursuing a 20 bed, 14,400 square foot Alzheimer’s/dementia specialty care unit addition.  This will bring the bed count to 108.  Currently the home is at 86 residents.  Construction on the addition may be as soon as March of this year.  The General Contractor will be chosen from a competitive bidding process that closes on January 22nd.  Construction is expected to last 9 months and be completed by the end of 2009.

The addition will incorporate aspects of the latest design for Alzheimer’s care such as what is referred to as ‘Greenhouse’.  This term and philosophy was developed first at a nursing home in Mississippi and has spread throughout the United States and other countries.  The closest greenhouse concept to us is in San Angelo at Baptists’ Sagecrest Nursing.  Holiday Hill’s addition will incorporate the use of infused natural light and utilize the kitchen area as the nurses station.  In a ‘greenhouse concept’, all care is person-centered, meaning all focus is on the resident and all employees are capable of performing all functions.  The nurse aide in charge is also the cook, called Shahbazim, are "universal workers," who cook meals, do laundry, provide personal care, assist with habilitation, and promote the elders' quality of life.( The Gerontologist 46:533-539 (2006) © 2006 The Gerontological Society of America )  Let that sink in for a moment.  All employees in a true ‘greenhouse concept’ are certified nurse aides, except for the nurse in charge.  This type of project is so new, the state regulators do not have specific rules written for it but are allowing for the flow of new concepts that have true quality-of-care end results.  Holiday Hill will be on the cutting edge of Alzheimer’s care once this is opened.

The board of Holiday Hill and local community leaders have long recognized the need to include Alzheimer’s /dementia care and this fulfills a portion of their vision of a continuum of care for Coleman County.  The board also has plans to build a 24 bed assisted living center adjacent to the nursing home.  That construction will take place hopefully in a few years.

Truck Pops Telephone Lines
1/15/2009
At around 4:30pm on Thursday, January 15th a tractor/trailer rig didn't have quite enough clearance to go under the telephone lines at the corner of W. Ninth and Concho Streets. The truck, with a Werner Enterprises logo out of Omaha, Nebraska, was heading west on W. Ninth and ran into the telephone line, which pulled down lines from all around the surrounding area of the corner. The City of Coleman removed the lines but the telephone company will be responsible for coming in and repairing and replacing the pole and damaged lines. No word as to when they'll be arriving.

Coleman Livestock Auction Has Biggest Sale Ever
1/15/2009

In the 48 year history of Coleman Livestock Auction, they have never had a larger sale than the one Wednesday, January 14, 2009.

Receipts totaled 4,146 cattle. "The second week of January is usually big but due to the dry weather, it's unusually large," said Bob Edington. He also said that they are selling a large number of cows, 500 or 600 weekly.

You can blame the dry weather for the large numbers as grazing runs thin.

"The chance for rain is still not good through the next seven days," said Randy Turner, meteorologist on KRBC TV. "We are trapped in a bad weather pattern for the time being due to a large high pressure system in the western U.S. It forces dry cold fronts through our area every two or three days and keeps Gulf moisture pushed east of our area."

While the pattern is here for the next week, Turner thinks it will change, at least for a few days, which helps. "About the middle of next week, I look for the high to break down and move east, replaced by low pressure in the west. This does not guarantee rain, but it does put us in a more favorable position to see storm systems come closer to our area."

The Climate Prediction Center puts out long-range precipitation and temperature forecasts for several months down the road. You can look at those on their website which is: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/index.php.

CHS Honors Students Thursday Night
1/10/2009
Coleman High School auditorium was the site for a ceremony on Thursday evening to honor five students that recently passed their High School Equivalency Exams.  Attending the ceremony were many family and friends of the students, as well as CISD Superintendent Royce Young, High School Principal Richard Holloway, Regional GED Director Gordon Peterson and School Board member and wife Jody and Lorrie Payne.  Mr. Holloway began the ceremony with a welcome and introduction of guests.  He gave credit to teachers Bob Lindsey and Michelle Sexton for running the GED sessions at CHS.  Mr. Holloway also discussed the difficulty of the 5 portions of the test the students must pass and hoped the test would be a catalyst for the students to continue to reach for their goals.

Mr. Bob Lindsey then spoke and first introduced Krystal Pence (pictured below) from last year's class of students.  She had the highest score posted in the entire state of Texas on her GED tests for 2007-2008.  Krystal is attending Hardin Simmons on scholarships she received due to her high ACT score, which she took immediately after completing her GED tests.

Receiving their certificates from Mr. Peterson were Kitty Kight who plans to become an RN, Brandi Russell who thanked Darla and Shaedin Johnson for their help in accomplishing this task, Jeffrey Segura who intends to join the military, Cindy Watson who plans to become an RN, and Brian Pryor who plans to study for and take the ACT to gain college admittance.

Royce Young closed the ceremony by discussing the dedication and commitment required by these students.  He also thanked Mr. Holloway for being a "man of ideas" and getting things such as this GED class started.  He finished by telling the students that they "have a piece of paper in their hands that no one can ever take away from them."  Following the ceremony family and friends gathered in the commons area of Coleman High School for cake and punch.

Town and Country Garden Club
1/10/2009
    (contributed)
The Coleman Town and Country Garden Club met on Tuesday evening, January 6, at Kay’s Garden at 114 East Pecan Street in Coleman. Everyone was welcomed back for the new year by President Eileen Morris. Roll call was answered with a “show and tell” of each member’s “best” garden work gloves.

The minutes from December consisted of lots of laughs due to excellent “white elephant” gifts. The treasurer’s report was given and the dues were collected for the next year.   The new slate of officers for 2009-2011 was accepted by acclamation. The following are the new officers: President – Sue Shields; Vice-President – Opal Reed; Assistant VP–Caroline Skelton; Secretary – Myrtie Beaver; Assistant Secretary – Danella McBrayer; Treasurer – Eileen Morris.

A vote was taken to continue to contribute to district and state garden club funds for various projects. Also this year we lost a dear member of our Garden Club, Kaye Franklin. Members wish to purchase a bench in her name for the front of the Miller Building.

Once again the garden club would like to offer red bud trees for sale this spring. The availability of these trees is being investigated with more information to follow.   The horticulture exhibit presented by Joy Skelton was a beautiful orchid. Eileen Morris presented an artistic design to represent the new year made of beads, pine cones, okra pods, a feather boa, and a small horn.

The program was “Crafts in the Garden”, presented by Sue and Bill Shields (pictured right). Tool aprons were passed out, along with paints, markers, sponges, and stencils. Everyone left with a personal garden apron designed to prevent the misplacement of small garden tools.

The hostess for the evening was Myrtie Beaver, who brought perfect light snacks for all. There were 18 members present plus two guests: Kay Mitchell and Bill Shields.

Our current fundraising project is the CHS Basketball Concession Stand and workers are always needed!!

The committee for the Class of 2010 also accepts donations from the community. If you have not been approached and would like to help with this worthwhile cause, you may contact Viki Hambright at FCNB.  Thanks to everyone who is helping to make this project successful!

Research Shows Exercise Keeps Money in Your Wallet ...
1/7/2009    (by Linda Hyde, of Curves)

...And Other Great Reasons to Head to the Gym
In today’s uncertain economy, families are looking to cut back on any expenses that seem like a luxury or even the slightest bit frivolous. One of the items receiving scrutiny in many households -- and in the media -- is gym memberships. Yet a growing body of evidence suggests that cutting that gym membership may be exactly the wrong move for even the most cash-strapped family.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
inactive
adults have significantly higher direct medical costs than active adults, and the costs associated with physical inactivity increase with age.
"To put it in perspective," said Linda Hyde, owner of the Curves women’s fitness center in Coleman, "for every dollar you spend on wellness, you save as much as five dollars on illness."  Curves has partnered with major health insurance and third party providers -- including Healthways SilverSneakers, AARP, and Blue Cross Blue Shield -- who see huge financial benefits in wellness programs and offer reimbursements and incentives on Curves gym memberships to their plan members.   For example, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota recently completed a landmark study that found that people who went to the gym at least eight times a month had significantly lower healthcare costs than those who did not. These frequent gym attendees had:
• 39 percent fewer visits to the Emergency Room
• 41 percent fewer hospital admissions
• 18 percent lower overall claims costs
In an era where many have no health insurance at all and those who do have higher copays, a gym membership may be the most affordable way to keep healthcare dollars in consumers’ pockets. This will become even more important in the near future, according to researcher IBISWorld: As baby boomers pass through their 40s and 50s, healthcare costs are forecast to rise dramatically.

Everyone knows that the human body thrives on regular exercise, and that staying fit and maintaining a healthy weight can contribute to significantly reduced risks for various cancers (by as much as 60 percent!), diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and many other debilitating conditions. Here are some other great reasons to head to the gym:
• Exercising with others can "greatly improve your exercise adherence". It’s much easier to stick to an exercise program when you have accountability -- from trainers and coaches, friends, or both. (University of Georgia Department of Kinesiology and Health)
• Exercise is like Miracle-Gro for your brain and can make you smarter by releasing chemicals that cause neurons to branch and connect in new ways. New junctions between neurons are the basis of learning. (Kristin R. Wehner Keffeler, Entrepreneur.com)
• Exercise may make you a better worker -- by as much as 15 percent according to a study presented to the American College of Sports Medicine -- and enhances time-management skills, mental performance, ability to meet deadlines, mood, and interactions with co-workers. (MSNBC.com)
• Exercise directly reduces stress by decreasing the production of stress hormones and increasing the production of endorphins-your brain’s "feel good" neurotransmitters. (MayoClinic.com)
Exercise pays you back double: Each hour of exercise adds two to your life. (Harvard Alumni Study)
"The research is clear: Exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight can save not only your life but your money as well," said Linda Hyde. "Your health is your most precious asset, and not taking care of it is going to cost you more in the long run."

How to Make a New Year’s Resolution With Results  (BY Linda Hyde)

I know what you’re thinking about as 2008 descends over the horizon and 2009 approaches to take its place: RESOLUTIONS!!!....

The most common resolution, of course, is to lose those extra pounds that suddenly showed up as a result of all the holiday goodies you couldn’t resist. Dieting and exercise are often first, but always among the top ten, on the nation’s list of New Year’s goals. Although we all want to look better, regain that youthful figure, and get back into our favorite jeans, it’s more important to follow through on those ‘good intentions’ for health reasons. If you are committed and consistent with your efforts, the slimming effect will come in due time.

You may be tempted to go on a fad diet to lose weight quickly, but I can assure you that quick weight loss is not healthy, nor is it forever; in fact you can expect to gain the lost weight back “with interest”…..in other words, the human body is not designed to function on a fad diet; therefore, you can’t stay on it for more than a few weeks, and you will eventually gain back more weight than you lost.

So, to avoid disappointment, take a SMART approach towards your resolution. It should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Reasonable and Trackable.

Start with a weight-loss, waist-size, or dress-size goal to be reached within a reasonable period of time. This is a numerical value target that can be accurately measured. For example: 2 lbs per week or two dress sizes in 6 months. Write it down for future reference and periodic motivation.

Take baby-steps in making changes to your current habits, and write down your plans so you can review them often. Some examples of minor changes that can provide major results are as follows:

1) Try drinking more water throughout the day for flushing toxins out of the body and maintaining hydration. Most people don’t drink enough water. The prescribed amount is 64 ounces a day, but any increase in your water intake will be a blessing to your body.
2) Take a multi-vitamin to provide missing nutrients. Today’s meals are lacking in many essential vitamins and minerals, so take a supplement to compensate for what’s missing.
3) Always eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Skipping meals confuses the metabolism.
4) Eat less quantity, but trick yourself in the process. Use a smaller plate at home to ensure portion control. When eating out, ask for a “to go” box and transfer half your entrée into it and forget about it before you begin your meal. Then you can enjoy the next-day leftovers too.
5) Eat your larger meals earlier in the day, and don’t eat after 7PM (or 3 hours before bedtime).
6) Limit your temptations. You won’t follow through if you have to give up something you really enjoy, so compromise. For example, if you habitually drink 3 sodas a day, limit yourself to 2; or if bread is your downfall, eat half what you normally would; if you use a teaspoon of sugar in your coffee, use 1/2 teaspoon.
7) Enjoy a healthy snack between meals: fruit (remember, an apple a day?), dairy products (like cheese or yogurt), or a small serving of almonds or sunflower seeds are all good sources to curb the appetite until mealtime.
8) Keep a food journal. It’s a proven fact that people who write down what they eat, lose weight twice as fast as those who don’t.
9) Include a green vegetable (green beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, or spinach) at dinner to aid in digestion. If your green vegetable is a salad, use ½ as much dressing than usual.
10) Exercise! Do something you enjoy so you will keep it up. Walk with friends, bicycle around the block, prepare your garden for spring planting, find your Sweatin’ to the Oldies video and “get down” with Richard Simmons, or join a club. The main objective is to MOVE! Everyone needs 60 minutes of physical activity a day or 30 minutes of cardio exercise three times each week.

These are just a few examples to jumpstart your New Year’s resolution. Choose a couple at first, and when you conquer them as part of your daily ritual, you can move on to add another. You’ll be surprised at how soon you’ll see, and feel, the results; but remember: commitment and consistency are absolutes for success. Good Luck and Happy New Year!

Thursday is Artwalk in Abilene
1/6/2009
Get ready for winter fun at Abilene’s Center For Contemporary Arts. A fabulous foursome including Pamela Gilbreth Watkins, Becky Tubbs, Katy Presswood and Carol Mitchell will present a delightful smorgasbord of visual imagery to heat up the next two months. These talented artists have created original works to fill the Center’s galleries with color and warmth. Leading off the festivities at Artwalk from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on January 8th with a welcome for all, the exhibitions will feature something for everyone in the distinctive styles of these diverse artists. A formal reception is also slated January 16th for CCA members and patrons. Please call the Center at 325-677-8389 for a party invitation. Plan on food, music and more for your enjoyment.

The displays will be anchored by a collection of new works from Pamela Gilbreth Watkins of Buffalo Gap. With emphasis on design and composition, the artworks rely on the “Golden Mean,” an esoteric standard of proportion used around the globe in ancient art and architecture of the earliest civilizations. This “phi” ratio engenders an archetypal appeal to human consciousness not fully understood by today’s logic. For these artworks, Pamela uses a retrospective of selections from her photographic archives. She has digitally-altered her ordinary photographs and transformed them into Modernist images joined in compositions with original abstract paintings for a show of dramatic colors and textures floating against neutral backgrounds. Here, the commonplace has become uncommon and developed spontaneously throughout the creation process, as much to the surprise of the artist as to the viewer. So, visit the Center during the art show and see if you can recognize these enhanced photos of your friends and neighbors.

Pamela Gilbreth Watkins has been engaged in creating and producing fine art at the professional level for over twenty-five years. She specializes in commissioned works and monumental bronze sculptures. She has been repeatedly nominated and named as a finalist for the Texas State Artist title. Major commissions include the Texas State Game Warden Memorial, the John Middleton Memorial and works for the Buffalo Gap Historic Village Museum, Bluebell creameries, and Ruidoso Downs. Her exhibitions include the prestigious Loveland Invitational, Sculpture in the Park, the Western Heritage Classic and more. Pamela has to her credit literally hundreds of solo shows in both public and private venues.

Pamela is a signature member of the Center For Contemporary Arts in Abilene, Texas, and is involved in numerous arts-related organizations. She publishes APPLAUSE & ACCLAIM, a newspaper which promotes the arts and humanities across the state. She writes and photographs on a freelance basis for a variety of other publications.

She has taught professionally in both public and private schools and in the museum setting, as well as at the university level. She currently heads the visual arts department for Clyde Consolidated Independent School District.
Pamela leads “Art After Hours,” an artistic and cultural enrichment group which meets in Tuscola. She presents workshops, lessons and lectures and accepts speaking engagements on a regular basis.

The Center for Contemporary Arts reminds readers that these artists have a large following from Abilene and the surrounding area, so come on out to Artwalk and see all your friends and neighbors from around the Big Country who are sure to be there.

We would especially like to thank James Posey and Rex Stephenson for the wonderful service and James Allen, Mike Stephenson, Jerry Don Stephenson, Larry Walden, Walter Tompkins and Buddy Slayton for serving as pallbearers. Each of you boys had a special place in Howard's heart and in ours. To Gene Christian for playing the fiddle - your playing always put a smile on his face.

Thank you to Dr. Reynolds, Dr. Atwood, David Longley and the nurses and aides at Coleman County Medical Center for the care you gave throughout the year and his final days. Last, but not least, Neely Felux, Tracy Dunaway, Shelly Robinett and Donna Cummings for the care you gave Howard at home. There will always be a special place in our hearts for you ladies.

Thank you is not enough to say for what you have done and gave to our family. May God Bless each of you and smile down on you for the love you have given this family.
