meet THIS MONDAY, March 2nd at 6:00

Fire Department Notice
2/27/2009
The Coleman Fire
Department would like to make the public aware that
anyone planning a controlled burn needs to contact the
Fire Dept. before starting it. Also, all welders
should be very cautious and make certain to have a
"spotter" and plenty of water on hand in case flames
flare up. Be careful out there! With the low
humidity and lack of rainfall, grass fires can begin
very easily!
Dear Parent/Guardian
of CISD Band Student:
2/27/2009
On Monday, March 9th,
the Coleman ISD Bands (6th, 7th/8th, and High School)
will be performing a Dinner Concert
in the Elementary/Junior High Cafeteria. This concert
will be in conjunction with the Band Boosters having a
“Mexican Stack” fundraiser meal. The cost for the meal
is $5 for adults and $3 for elementary and band
students. The boosters are having a meeting on
Monday, March 2nd at 5:30pm
to straighten out all the details for this event and
also discuss your student’s end of the year trip. It is
very important that we have parents from all grade
levels attend in order to make the fundraiser and trip a
success!

Because we are expecting to feed around 500 people we
are asking that each class of students bring a different

An Evening With a
Deputy...
2/27/2009 ~by Kim E. Horne
Have you ever wondered
exactly what that the Sheriff’s department does besides
arrest people? Well I did and recently got the
opportunity to spend a Friday night riding around with
Deputy Sheriff Les Cogdill of the Coleman County
Sheriff’s department. I started the night at
6:00pm. We began by stopping by the jail. Les had to
speak with one of the inmates. We then hopped into the
car and were off. I started “picking his brain” a bit
with a few questions.
Kim - What areas
of Coleman County does the Sheriff’s department cover?
Deputy Cogdill -
All of Coleman County. That is 1260 sq. miles. There is
a Sheriff and 4 deputies that work for the Sheriff’s
department: Sheriff Wade Turner, Jeromy Watson, Vicky
Plummer, Les Cogdill and Ken Brixey. On weekends there
are 2 deputies working.
While discussing this, Deputy Cogdill was called to a
house where a mom was having problems with her child. I
quickly realized that the deputy’s job entailed much
more than one might think. Cogdill stated that they not
only deal with criminals, they also take on the role of
counselors, clergymen, social workers, teachers and
ranchers. I knew the rancher part because my husband has
had several calls that his cows were out. The sheriff’s
dept. is always there to help him, if needed, to get the
stray cow back into the pasture. While we were at this
particular house Anthony Smith of the Coleman Police
Department arrived as back-up. Chief Moses wanted him to
assist on the call. Cogdill later told me that the
Police department often is called as back-up because you
really don’t know what you are going to walk into on
some of the calls. Although this one was handled with a
bit of counseling, not all of them turn out that way. It
is helpful to have someone else there for safety
reasons. Chief Moses and Sheriff Turner do a good job of
protecting the officers in this way.
Kim - What is the
difference between the Sheriff’s Department and the
Police department?
Deputy Cogdill -
The Sheriff’s Department covers all of Coleman County.
The Police department covers inside the city limits of
Coleman. Cogdill said that people often ask him why the
Sheriff’s Department shows up at accidents or crime
scenes in the city limits. He said that you have to
remember that the city of Coleman is in the County and
they cover the whole county. Another difference between
the two departments is that the city has 10 officers and
a Detective, while the Sheriff’s department has 4
deputies and Sheriff Wade Turner. If a murder occurs,
the sheriff on the scene would work the investigation
from start to finish. The police department secures the
scene, then the Police Detective takes over the
investigation. He told me one thing people don’t
know is the amount of paper work involved. When he stops
someone for a DWI the paperwork can take up to 4 hours.
In larger cities departments have someone assigned to do
the paper work, but each Coleman County Sheriff’s deputy
does his/her own.
Kim - What are
some misconceptions people might have about your job?
Deputy Cogdill -
People often think we have quotas, like we are supposed
to give a particular number of tickets per month.
Cogdill said that is not true. It is against the law to
do that. Also, he said that some people think the more
tickets you get the more money for the county. Well, the
state gets most of that money so that is true and false.
Another misconception is that they are just “looking” to
arrest people or to give them tickets. That is not true.
We are just trying to keep people safe. If someone is
doing something harmful, then it is our job to keep them
for harming anyone. He also told me another
misconception people have is they often think that the
Sheriff’s department only deals with Coleman County
people. That is not true. They work all of the roads and
highways in the county and stop people from all over the
United States. They never know who is going to be behind
the wheel.
I touched a bit on the drug problem Coleman seems to
have. I asked him his thoughts about this - he told me
that the drug problem was bad everywhere, not just in
Coleman. We live here so we see it more. Meth
(methamphetamines) is a big problem. Meth was not as
visible 10 years ago and is a problem now because it is
so addictive – one of the most addictive drugs out
there. Also, meth can be made easily. One can buy all
the ingredients to make it from the local pharmacist.
Meth addicts have to have their “fix” and will do just
about anything to get money to buy their drugs. He went
on to tell me that they may suspect there is drug use,
sale or making of the drug going on in a house or
building – but laws prevent them from just arresting
them. They have to have “reasonable cause” to arrest.
This means that they have to have informants and means
of evidence before they can make an arrest. This can
take some time to obtain.
As I ended the night at 1:00 am, I asked myself a
question, “Kim, what did you learn tonight?” My answer
was clear. These men and women have a very dangerous
job; never knowing who is behind the wheel or behind the
door - not knowing what frame of mind that person is in.
I know all of the Deputies and I have to say they all
have a tremendous love for their job and for the people
of Coleman County. They are knowledgeable about the
rules, laws and jail regulations, and they will stop at
nothing to protect all of us. I also learned how well
the Sheriff’s department works hand in hand with the
police department, EMS, fire fighters, DPS, and CPS.
They all have a wonderful rapport with one another. Les
told me this was because of the relationship Sheriff
Wade Turner has with Chief Moses. “They are both great
to work for and they work really well with one another.
This makes our entire job easier.”
The Sheriff’s department is here to help and protect us.
We should all be proud to have our excellent Sheriff’s
Department. Just remember they are all there to protect
us and keep us out of harms way. I hope to get to ride
again; I had a good time and learned so much!

Laptop "Rollout"
Ceremony Held Monday Night
2/24/2009
Monday was
a "great day to be in Coleman ISD," according to
Superintendent Royce Young. He gave the welcoming
address at the One-to-One Laptop Implementation in the
high school auditorium in front of 232 students (83% of
the 279 students in CHS) and several parents and guests.
Mr. Young thanked Principal Richard Holloway for all his
planning and work that made the night possible. He also
thanked the school board, the faculty for their
research, time and work, as well as Paul Martin,
Technology Director for CISD, and his staff. Mr. Young
stated, "Today marks a change in the students and
teachers roles." He discussed the active role they must
take in the education process, rather than the passive
role of passing on information. He looks forward to
seeing the increased motivation of the students and the
end result of their technology-based education.
Dr. Mike Edington, CISD Board President, also spoke to
the audience. He congratulated the staff for making the
project happen. Mr. Holloway recognized guests in
attendance, including: Mayor Nick Poldrack, Larry Weise
(City Manager), representatives from the Education
Service Center in San Angelo, members of the CISD Board
of Trustees, the Coleman ISD Foundation Board (including
President Alice Hemphill), Chamber Director Mary Griffis
and other Chamber board members, Billie Mercer,
Colemannews.com, Chronicle and Democrat Voice, and
television stations KRBC, KTAB, and KTXS.
Following Mr. Holloway, Jeri Hodges - TEA Grant Liaison-
gave a Power-point presentation on the expectations for
the "Vision for 2020" Grant. She mentioned that the
$500,000 grant was only given to 17 out of the 90 school
districts that applied. She thanked the school and
community for the commitment and participation in the
project.
Dr. Mark Jamison, Coleman ex-student, is the Technology
Implementation Manager for Pearson and spoke about the
21st Century Skills the students should gain from this
project. He also showed a video that was written and
produced by high school students about the need for
technology in school systems. He introduced some of the
"safe" software programs the students will be accessing
with their laptops.
Doodie Taylor-Knox spoke as a representative of the
Coleman Library Board. She mentioned the improvements
the library has made recently, including the addition of
many computers, the Go Satellite Center, and the
wireless internet availability in the library. She also
spoke about a Teen Lounge area that is being planned for
the upstairs loft area.
Finally, CHS teacher Bonnie Brown gave the students
their final instructions for the distribution of the
laptops. She then sent the students one grade at a time
to their respective areas to receive their laptops,
log-on, and finalize the process. There were many
smiling faces as the students walked out the doors
carrying their new educational tools. Congratulations to
CHS for taking this step forward to further our
students' abilities to compete in the technological
world we live in today!

Last Call for Girl
Scout Cookies
2/19/2009
Opportunity to purchase or donate to soldiers ends
February 27.
Austin, Texas, February 16—Girl Scout Cookie lovers
must purchase their favorite cookie in the next 11
days or be forced to wait a full year for the sale
to come around again. Girl Scout Cookies, which went
on sale January 21, are only on sale for about six
weeks per year but have a faithful following of
cookies lovers and Girl Scout supporters.
The Girl Scout Cookie Program is a means to meet a
wide variety of ends: teaching girls important
skills like goal setting and money management,
funding local Girl Scout programs and providing a
delicious treat to customers. Operation Cookie, the
Girl Scout program to donate cookies to US soldiers,
incorporates an important fourth element: service.
Through Operation Cookie customers can purchase Girl
Scout Cookies to be donated to US soldiers serving
across the world. Girl Scouts, with the help of
Operation Interdependence, will package and ship the
cookies, complete with a note of gratitude for the
soldiers’ service, to the soldiers.
“Writing thank you notes to our soldiers helps girls
understand the immense sacrifice soldiers make to
protect us,” says Theresa Claiborne, Product Sales
Manager for Girl Scouts of Central Texas. “Then
realizing they can improve a soldier’s life with
cookies and a note, empowers them to impact others
through acts of kindness. It’s a program where
everyone really wins.”
Cookies for Operation Cookie will be packaged and
shipped in March but customers who wish to support
the program must purchase and donate cookies by
February 27, the last day cookies are available for
sale.
This season’s new cookie is the Daisy-Go-Round, a
cinnamon flavored cookie that comes in 100-calorie
snack packs. Cookie booth locations and information
about Girl Scouts, including how to register, can be
found at

to this fire. 5 homes and 1 outbuilding were
threatened; an outbuilding (a cabin) and a jeep were
lost. The fire burned 1000 acres and was 60%

Coleman County Historical Program
2/19/2009
The Feed Store – Santa Anna, Texas, Feb 5,
2009
The CCHC held their
February meeting in Santa Anna at The Feed Store.
Heartland Ministries was kind enough to let the
visitors look over their recently completed building
and to allow us the use of their
big screen TV system. A great big set of thanks go
to Tye Lequay for all his expertise in operating the
system. The hall opened about 6:30P,
snacks were set out and the visitors began to look
over the building. The group opened the program with
a short business meeting for reports from some of
the members.
Montie Guthrie gave a short report on some of the
activities that the Santa Anna Historical
Development Organization is involved in. Tex
Wright gave a short synopsis of the upcoming Texas
Historical Conference to be held in Lakeway, Texas.
It will be held April 15, 16, & 17. This is the
annual conference for all the county Historical
commissions The group watched a film made in 1989
about the historical places in thre Southwest and
western parts of Coleman County. Glen Cove had a
“Marrying Tree” where couples would go to get
married. Glen Cove is the 2nd oldest town in the
county.
Another interesting point brought out in this film –
when the community of Voss was being settled, land
was selling for the outrageous price of 45 cents per
acre. After the film, a bit of conversation
brought out other points of the county that needed
to be put on film such as old graves near the
right-of-way of county roads.
The meeting was adjourned and the discussion
continued along with the snacking. The next
meeting of the CCHC will be March 5th
at Heritage Hall in Coleman. This will be a planning
program to plan for the next two years. If you have
an idea for a program or just want to put in your 2
cents worth. We look forward to seeing you there.

Holiday
Hill Impact Player of the Year 2008
2/18/2009
(contributed)
Norma Kenney, Holiday
Hill veteran of over 21 years was selected as Impact
Player of the Year for 2008. Norma is the Assistant
Administrator and was chosen from 11 excellent
employees that were selected throughout the year as
impact player of the month. Norma, like many nursing
home employees, wears many hats. But perhaps her
most important job is to ‘be there’ for employees,
family members and residents alike. Always eager to
help and to pitch in, she goes out of her way most
days to uplift others. When the Impact Player award
was begun in early 2008, we defined the person we
were looking for in an ‘Impact Player’. It was to be
someone who gives freely of themselves and leads the
way for others. Someone dedicated to changing the
lives of others around them. Someone you can always
count on. Someone we all look up to in tough times.
Someone that epitomizes what Holiday Hill stands for
in our community. Someone who truly makes an impact.
Congratulations Norma Kenney.

Coleman ISD Board
Extends Administrator Contracts
2/17/2009
Coleman ISD Board met in
regular session Monday night and acted on several agenda
items. The board approved a Joint Election Agreement
between the City of Coleman and the Coleman Independent
School District. Technology Director, Paul Martin,
submitted a list of vendors for approval to be used on
the E-Rate Application for 2009-2010. Vendors approved
were Verizon for local phone service, Sprint for Cell
Phone use, Region XV Service Center for bundled internet
services, Gaggle for Student e-mail, Fusion for Web Page
hosting and Flexile for basic maintenance.
Superintendent, Royce Young, presented an in depth look
at the schools finances
explaining how the district received money, from what
sources, and where school monies were spent. “We must
continue to find ways to cut expenses while encouraging
our legislators to address the fundamental problem.
Compressing the tax rate from $1.6 to $1.04 was not the
answer. We are close to six months in the budget cycle
and I will be able to give the board a strong projection
at the March board meeting of our current status in this
year’s budget.” Young noted that close to 80% of
Coleman ISD’s money comes from state and local sources
which is very different from the average across the
state. Districts with more property wealth receive the
bulk of their funding from local property taxes. “We are
very dependent on the state for operation money.” In
other action, the board extended the contracts of
Richard Holloway, High School Principal, Paula Ringo,
Junior High Principal, Becky Jackson, Elementary
Principal, Athletic Directors, Rusty Buzzard and Barbara
Cox, Karen Huff, Business Manager, Paul Martin,
Technology Director, and Lorrie Payne, Curriculum
Director. The board also extended the contract of Royce
Young, Superintendent

FOCUS ON FITNESS
2/17/2009 by Linda Hyde, Fitness
Instructor
February ….Focus on Your Heart
February is devoted to the “heart” in more ways than
one. As January fades and February approaches, we
begin seeing heart icons that represent love and
romance in preparation for cupid’s visit on the
14th. It’s important to have your heart filled with
adoration for another human being, but it’s even
more important to provide long-term health for that
life-supporting organ. I know it doesn’t sound as
appealing as a box of Valentine chocolates or
long-stemmed roses, but let’s face reality: Without
a healthy heart, life is just too precarious.
A few basic rules to follow for a healthy heart are:
• Eat carbs. Simple carbohydrates don’t make us feel
as full as eating fat, so if you overdo avoiding
fats, you may overindulge in total carb calories.
When snacking, stick to carbs that contain vitamins
and fiber, like apples and carrots, rather than
those without nutritional value, like pretzels.
• Consider healthy fat sources like avocados,
walnuts, and almonds.
• Color is vital. The more colorful the vegetable,
the more heart-protective antioxidants are contained
within. Steaming vegetables conserves more nutrients
than microwaving, but over-steaming or boiling can
also remove many heart healthy elements.
• Choose fish over red meat. Include fish in your
diet that contains Omega-3s which have been shown to
reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death. Your best
choices are wild salmon, sardines, and herring.
Regardless of the meats you choose, have the gravy
served on the side.
• Enjoy a little chocolate….that is, if it’s DARK
chocolate which contains a very high amount of a
heart healthy antioxidant called catechin. Natural
coca powder and tea are also excellent sources of
heart-healthy compounds.
• Manage stress by finding ways to distract you from
worry, such as soothing music, a massage, a hobby,
brain-teasing puzzles, or online games.
• Laughing heartily, during mealtime, is good for
the heart as it reduces the surge in blood sugar
levels. Enjoy your meals with family or friends.
• Regular exercise keeps the heart muscle strong.
This can range from a physical activity such as
golf, gardening, brisk walking, or bicycling to
aerobics or dance. Your exercise should be for a
continuous 20 to 30 minutes at least three times
each week. An alternative is to use a pedometer to
count your daily steps. There are about 2,000 steps
in a mile; and 6,000 steps will maintain a healthy
heart. Other options include using the stairs
instead of the elevator or parking your car at the
end of the parking lot and walk some distance.
• Last, but certainly not least, the one
recommendation that’s vital to heart health: Quit
smoking!
These are just a few suggestions for giving your
heart a head-start towards a long lifetime and many
“heart-healthy” February months ahead.

In our recent story concerning the Coleman County
jail we mentioned the county pays Runnels County to
house Coleman Co. inmates. "The amount paid to
Runnels County is $35 per day. The cost in
Coleman County varies depending on the number of
inmates housed at any one time," says Judge Jimmie

A native Texan, Sher Dunaway, has always been
involved in the arts through her photography,

Good Neighbor TEEA Meeting
2/13/2009
"The Mission of Lena
Boyd" was the program presented by David Karthauser
at the Good Neighbor TEEA club meeting on Friday
morning, February 6th. He gave a Power Point
presentation of Lena Boyd, his aunt by marriage, and
her work in India. A graduate of Santa Anna High
School, Lena attended Missionary School in New York
and was appointed by the Presbyterian Church to
enter the mission field. She served villages in the
foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. Lena Boyd is a
legend in Northern India for working there 40 years,
retiring and then, later, going back for more years
of service. She adopted 13 "throw-away" girls and an
orphaned boy. The youngest girl, Naseem, graduated
from North Texas State University with a Masters
Degree in Education. A teacher, Naseem married Madhu
Singh, a YMCA director in India. When they retired,
they built a home in the foothills of the Himalayas
where Lena had been. These two are carrying on
Lena's work where the needs are still many.
Thank you, David, for this most interesting program.
We enjoyed meeting you and your wife, Olga.
After the program, President, Mary Frances Smith,
called the meeting to order. Doris McCulloch led the
Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag and to the
Texas flag. Retamay Gaines led the creed and the
prayer. Thought for the day was: "Blessed are the
flexible for they will not be bent out of shape".
Members answered roll call with, "How many years
have you been married?". Peggy Willetts gave the
treasurer's report.
Anna Jenkins reported 13 members are planning to
take part in the February 18th fun trip to San
Angelo. This was to include the Pippi Longstocking
musical.

Commissioners
Decide Against Additional Jailers
2/11/2009
Last month, the Coleman County Jail failed
inspection for the first time in its 119 year
existence.
Jackie Semmler, TCJS inspector, determined there
were not enough corrections officers for the number
of inmates housed. The report says: "After reviewing
the average daily population reports for the past
twelve months and reviewing the staffing rosters, it
was determined that there is only one officer per
shift on certain shifts. The average daily
population report reflects that the facility has, at
times, housed 10 or more inmates in the facility and
the officer leaves the floor to conduct various
tasks." The standard also states "Inmates shall be
supervised by an adequate number of corrections
officers to comply with state law and these
standards. One corrections officer shall be provided
on each floor of the facility where 10 or more
inmates are housed, with no less than one
corrections officer per 48 inmates or increment
thereof on each floor for direct inmate
supervision."
Wade Turner, County Sheriff, explained that the jail
is rated to hold a maximum of 15 inmates.
Complicating matters, is the fact that the jail is
multi-story, and law requires male and female
inmates be separated by sight and sound. "Typically,
we hold 13 or 14 people in the jail. Any
over-population goes to Runnels County or Taylor
County jails," Turner said. In a multi-story
facility with 10 or more inmates on one floor, that
floor requires a jailer 24 hours a day." Besides
making rounds and checking on the inmates, jailers
also prepare meals, do inmate laundry, answer phone
calls, conduct visitation, recreation, assist people
who come to the jail, all of which occurs on the
first floor of the jail requiring them to leave the
2nd floor where inmates are housed.
In session Monday, Coleman County Commissioners
decided that they couldn't afford the two additional
jailers, requested by County Sheriff Turner.
According to County Judge Jimmie Hobbs, two jailers
would cost the county $72,000 per year, and since
the county is in the middle of its budget cycle, the
money wasn't budgeted. "We didn't have that kind of
money," Hobbs said.
Not hiring the jailers means the Coleman County Jail
is now limited to a capacity of nine. The current
total of six jailers will be able to cover all
shifts and meet state jail standards. Should the
number of inmates become 10 or more, those inmates
will be sent to Runnels or Taylor counties. The
county has routinely transferred inmates to those
counties when the local jail is overpopulated and
pays the daily rate charged by those counties.

2009 DOG MAYOR
CAMPAIGN KICKS OFF
2/9/2009 (Contributed)
The 2009-2010 Dog Mayor
campaign is underway! The Humane Society is now
accepting candidates for the position of Dog Mayor of
Coleman County for this 2-year term. In the past
we have been pleased to have J.B. Hickman, Dotty Herring
and Duke Ransberger serve in the position of Dog Mayor.
The 2007 campaign was exciting with a dark horse
candidate appearing in the form of a C-A-T. Actually,
Daisy brought a lot of publicity to the campaign as far
away as Fort Worth, and made quite a showing in the
campaign fundraising. So, any cats that think they are
up to the job are free to file.
The Dog Mayor represents Coleman and Coleman County at
various functions in the area, and sets an example for
the Spay/Neuter Your Pet (SNYP) program. All candidates
must be at least six months old and be altered and up to
date on his or her shots. The Humane Society will be
making an effort to involve the Dog Mayor in more
activities that are school-related during the 2009-2010
term, giving kids the opportunity to relate to animals
in their school environment. Consequently, we ask that
your candidate be friendly and sociable with everyone,
available, and, hopefully, not camera shy.
The filing applications
for the candidates can be picked up at the Humane
Society Thrift Store, 109 West Pecan, and at Block One
Flea Market, 301 East Pecan, or by leaving a message to
receive one by mail at 325-625-4724. The filing fee is
$5. Rules for the campaign are printed on the
application.
Basically, each candidate
will have his own campaign manager to take care of
running his campaign. Any and all campaign strategies
that will bring dollars to the candidate are encouraged.
Write your own slogans and get your picture in the paper
and on the web! Collect from any and all. Place your
candidate’s collection jar at your favorite locations.
Lobbyists are welcome to promote their candidate and
his/her platform as they see fit. Any heavy-pawed
campaigning gimmicks or tricks, if brought to our
attention, will be overlooked. After all, it’s all for a
good cause—funding our SNYP program.
The new Dog Mayor and a
Mayor Pro Tem will be announced at our fifth annual
Coleman County Flea Market and Community Garage Sale the
weekend of April 11 and 12. Each dollar collected will
equal one vote. Padding (pun intended) of the ballot box
is encouraged. Nepotism is “in.” If grandma wants to
donate $100 to her candidate’s campaign, all the better!
If you need good campaign
photographs, get your candidate gussied up for a
picture. We’ll make appointments for the photography
sessions at the thrift store. Camera-ready pictures will
be $2 each. Join the fun.
Arf!

Coleman County
Beauties in Early's Pageant
2/9/2009
(Contributed
by Tex Wright)
Coleman County was well represented in Saturday's
Sunburst beauty pageant held in the mall in Early,
Texas. Among the beautiful young ladies were Kyndell
Malaer, daughter of Thomas and Jennifer Malaer of
Coleman, Larkin Glasscock,
daughter of Shamey Glasscock of Santa Anna, and
Sarah Pelton, daughter of Alys and Earl Ellis of
Santa Anna. Each of these girls won some type
of trophy. Best personality, best smile, best
hair, best dress or costume, and others. Winning the
13 to 18 year old division was Sarah Pelton. She was
crowned as the over-all winner in the division.
Each of these girls won a paid entry to compete in
the state pageant to be held in Houston in May.
Pay close attention, the girl next door may win the
next pageant and we just wouldn't recognize that
that little tom-boy in jeans and a ragged shirt has
grown up and become a very beautiful young lady.
Coleman County has good growing conditions I guess,
as there are lots of uncrowned beauty queens within
it's boundaries. Kyndell Malaer from Coleman placed 2ND in
overall beauty and
received the prettiest eyes and prettiest smile
awards. She will move
on to the State competition in Houston in May.

CHAPS NEEDS YOUR
HELP
2/8/2009 (Contributed)
Coleman Heritage,
Arts & Preservation (CHAPS) needs your support. As
custodians of the Coleman Museum at Heritage Hall,
the Board of CHAPS is dedicated to the preservation
of the beautiful facility and all the local history
items in the Museum. Heritage Hall is available for
the use of the community and necessary improvements
must be made to continue to provide this venue for
events.
The current need is for efficient heating and
air conditioning systems in the main exhibit hall.
Currently there is no heat, as the boiler previously
used is unsafe for use, and the air conditioning
system is very inefficient and repairs must be made
continually to keep it functioning. The project
includes installation of 15 tons of high efficiency
heat and air conditioning systems in the main hall.
A grant request will be submitted in March for
fund to update the heat/air conditioning in the mail
hall, but, the grant requires a 20% match. The
estimated cost for this project is $23,000,
therefore,
we must raise $4,600 for the
matching funds by March 15th.
The CHAPS Board members have pledged funds to
support this project but your support is needed to
achieve this goal.
The CHAPS Board of Directors will appreciate
your donation of any amount to complete this
project, you may mail you donation to CHAPS/Coleman
Museum, 114 E. Pecan, Coleman, TX 76834. CHAPS is
designated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
and all donations are tax deductible.

Coming!
2/5/2009
Coming to First
United Methodist Church here in Coleman at 500 W.
Liveoak! As part of Lenten emphasis on prayer, it
will be set up in the church's fellowship hall,
March 5, 6, and 7.
Everyone in the community is invited to come and to
participate. Margaret Schulze is coordinator of the
event with Pastor Mike Kerzee and members of the
congregation.
The labyrinth is a large circular path which is
walked in a meditative, prayerful attitude. It is
not a maze! There is no puzzle to be solved, no
secret path, but rather a single path leading you to
the center and out again with prayer stations along
the way.
Walking the labyrinth is time out from your daily
schedule, a gift you give yourself, a personal time
to connect with God in prayer and meditation.
Coleman ISD
Announces Preparations for Memorial Day
2/5/2009
Coleman ISD
administrators and teachers are in the process of
making plans for Memorial Day, May 25, 2009. The
goal of the district is to turn the day into a truly
educational experience for students as well as
community members who would like to join us for the
various events. District officials feel that
students need to
learn that freedom is not free and that many
sacrifices have been made throughout the history of
the United States to keep our nation strong and
independent of tyranny. Students will be encouraged
to participate in the many activities throughout the
day. This will not be just another school day but a
day to celebrate the American Spirit and remember
those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to keep our
nation free.
The elementary school will be participating in their
annual Field Day, and they plan to turn the opening
ceremony into a celebration of Memorial Day with
United States Flags everywhere.
Plans for the other campuses include displays of
World War II weapons and artifacts and displays of
patriotic art created by the district’s art
students. A program with presentations of local
veterans, patriotic music by the CHS Bluecat Band,
and speakers from the National Guard is also in the
planning stages.
We welcome suggestions for this day from the
community. If you would like to offer suggestions,
please contact Lorrie Payne at 625-3671 or by email
at lorrie.payne@colemanisd.net.
February 8th has been declared a
"Day to pray for rain" by Mayor Nick Poldrack.

Coleman educator
takes concerns to lawmakers
Vouchers, retirement and funding
the top issues
2/2/2009
(contributed)
AUSTIN—An
educator with the Coleman school district joined
more than 350
of her colleagues from around the state at the
Capitol Monday to make their case for improving
public education.
Coleman prekindergarten teacher Sarah Beal was part
of the 112,000-member Association of Texas
Professional Educators’ biennial Lobby Day event,
which gives educators an opportunity to share their
views with their elected officials.
"It’s wonderful to be able to participate in the
political process and share our views with the
people who will ultimately make decisions about
education issues,” said Beal. “We hope that
lawmakers will demonstrate their commitment to
making education a top priority.”
During special meetings with state lawmakers, the
educators discussed the need for the state to
provide a stable school finance system, the
importance of a renewed focus on teacher retirement
and why they oppose the institution of private
school voucher programs.
“In recent years, lawmakers have increasingly leaned
on educators for guidance and expertise regarding
what happens in our public schools,” said Jerry
Bonham, ATPE state president. “We’re here to remind
our lawmakers just how important a fair, equitable
education to the future of Texas.”
Fraser to Chair
Business & Commerce Committee
2/2/2009 (contributed)
Austin
-- State Senator Troy Fraser (R-Horseshoe Bay) has
been reappointed chairman of the Senate Committee on
Business and Commerce by Lieutenant Governor David
Dewhurst. Lt. Governor Dewhurst made the
announcement on Friday evening.
"I look forward to continuing the work of the
Business and Commerce Committee," Fraser said. "This
committee handles the flow of legislation related to
electricity, insurance, telecommunications, banking,
securities and lending issues, and business
licensing and regulation. All of these issues are
important as we continue to help Texas grow
economically as our population grows."
"I appreciate Senator Fraser's hard work and
leadership as chairman of this important committee,"
Lt. Governor Dewhurst said. "As a seasoned
legislator with a strong background in business,
Senator Fraser has experience and knowledge that
will be invaluable to the Texas Senate as we face
the challenges of this legislative session."
In addition, Fraser has been re-named to the Senate
Committee on Natural Resources. "This committee
handles water, air and oil and gas issues - all of
which are vital concerns for the residents of Senate
District 24," stated Fraser.
Fraser was also renamed to the Senate Committee on
State Affairs and the Senate Committee on
International Relations and Trade.
"I'm pleased with the assignments and I look forward
to getting to work," Fraser said. "The budget
situation is better than it was last session but we
still have many challenges ahead."
Senator Fraser was elected in 1996 to serve Senate
District 24, a 21-county region that is located in
the geographic center of the state. Prior to his
election to the Texas Senate in 1996,
Senator Fraser
served three terms in the Texas House of
Representatives, from 1988 to 1992.

2/1/2009
The Coleman County Commissioners meeting was held today
at the court house. Those in attendance were:
Stacy Mendoza- County Clerk and Commissioners- Bill Don
McCrary, Johnny Mike Stephenson, Mark Williams & Allen
Davis. Also present were County Judge- Jimmy
Hobbs, County Atty.- Joe Lee Rose and County Tax
Assessor Collector -Jaime Trammell.
It was a full house at the Commissioners meeting today.
First on the agenda of old business was Shawn Whitley
with the Texas Forest Service; he came to talk about the
responsibilities of the Texas Forest Service and when
the Forest Service is to be called. Second
on the agenda was Texas Wright with the Coleman County
Historical Commission. He presented the court with a
list of new board members for the organization. These
include: (Voting Members) Tex Wright- Chairman, Joyce
Davis- Vice-Chair, Sue Frizzell- Secretary, Eric
Joffrion-Markers, Maxine Cope- Finance, James Winstead-
Preservation, Roger Nelson- Publicity & Promotions;
(Non-Voting members)- Montie Guthrie, Adrienna Lewis,
Wanda Motley, Patsy Wright, Russell Fisher. These new
members were approved by the court.
Next up was Jo Jones with the Coleman County Child
Welfare Board. She submitted the resignations of Terry
Martin and Sheri Craig. She also asked the court to
approve Lori Needham to be in charge of the " Rain Drop
Closet." Lori is not a member of the board but would be
working under the board. The resignations were accepted
and Lorie Needham's position was approved.
The court then heard from Ted Bedwell of Comanche Shores
concerning issues with trash burning in barrels by
visitors of Comanche Shores. He was concerned with the
safety of the residents if a fire were to break out
there. Judge Hobbs asked County Atty. Joe Lee Rose what
they could do legally; however, Mr. Rose said due to
being new on the job he had not had time to read up on
burning issues. The court decided to look further into
this situation and no action was taken at this time.

wanted to speak at the commissioners meeting, however
she was not able to attend, so no action was taken.
It was then Sheriff Wade Turner's turn to speak to the
court. He addressed them about obtaining additional
staffing for the jail. It was the court's decision at
that time was to gather more information and to talk to
Sheriff Turner more in-depth before making their
decision.
The court was then asked by the Coleman County Clerk's
office to purchase additional filing cabinet for records
and by District Atty. Heath Hemphill to amend the
District Attorney Forfeiture Budget. Both of these were
approved by the court. Also approved was a Resolution
Authorizing Application - Go Texan Rural Community
Hometown STARS Program and a Right of Way Agreement
between Coleman County Special Utility District and
Coleman County.
The commissioners court made a Proclamation for
National Wear Red Day to be February 6, 2009.
Last on the agenda was the paying of the bills then the
meeting was adjourned.
FOCUS ON FITNESS
BY Linda Hyde
Don’t Give Up on that Resolution……
We’re in the last week of January 2009, and you
should be well on your way to either kicking an old
bad habit or creating a healthy new habit. However,
if you’re not there yet, don’t despair: Rome wasn’t
built in a day…..Ruth didn’t hit that home run on
his first several tries, and you didn’t gain those
extra pounds in just a few weeks.
Resolution comes from the root words “resolute” and
“resolve”. Now let’s look at this a little more
deeply:
• Resolute means “marked by bold, steady, and firm
determination”; and “faithful” is noted as a
synonym.
• Resolve means “to deal with successfully”….”to
find an answer”….”to make clear or understandable”,
and “fixity of purpose”.
So, ultimately, a resolution is a bold and firm
decision to faithfully and steadily deal with a
problem by making successful changes for a definite
purpose.
You may have approached the New Year with good
intentions to make some needed changes in your
lifestyle, but unless you include a consistent
commitment over a period of specified time, chances
are your good intentions will fall by the wayside.
That’s why resolutions get repeated the following
year; but what looks like 10 pounds today could be
15 or even 20 in 2010. One of my favorite quotes is
“You can’t go back and start a new beginning, but
you can start today to make a new ending”. February
is only the 2nd month of 2009, so RESOLVE to be
RESOLUTE in facing your RESOLUTIONS. First, make a
commitment to yourself, and set a reasonable,
achievable goal. Then, plan your meals to include
nutrition, drink plenty of water, and exercise at
least 3 times each week. You’re on your way to
success in 2009 and making a different resolution
for 2010.
Coleman 7th and 8th graders appreciate the support
and continuous donations toward their trip to
Washington D.C. this summer. Congratulations to
Heath Hemphill, the winner of the Shoppin'
Baskit drawing on January 23rd.
