A truck pulling two trailers tried to turn around Monday
Night on State Highway 206 in Burkett but didn't quite
make it. The end result was both lanes of traffic being
blocked and the Coleman County Sheriff's Department and
a DPS Trooper from Runnels County coming to the scene to
investigate. This photo was taken around 10:30pm but it

DeLeon, Agbor, Cole,
Buzzard Named to All-West Texas 2A Football Team
12/27/2008
The sports staff at the
San Angelo Standard-Times has poured over stats and
relived the recently completed 2008 football season and
felt that four Coleman Bluecats performed to a high
standard and included them on the All-West Texas Team.
Three of the accolades came on defense and one on
offense with the following being said:
Linebacker - Stanley Cole,
Coleman - 5-10, 190, Sr.
"Cole had 144 tackles, caused two fumbles, blocked a
punt and was a first team 8-2A all-district selection."
Lineman - Jamal Agbor,
Coleman - 6-2, 260, Sr.
"Agbor had 72 total tackles, three sacks, two fumbles
recovered, one blocked punt and one defensive touchdown.
He was also a first-team all-district selection."
Defensive back - Colton
Buzzard, Coleman -
5-9, 150, Sr.
"Buzzard was a first-team all-district defensive back
but was one of the premier dual-threat quarterbacks in
the area, passing for 1,636 yards and 19 touchdowns and
also running for 527 yards and seven touchdowns."
Receiver - Dalton DeLeon,
Coleman - 5-9, 145, Sr.
"DeLeon was an explosive weapon in the Bluecats offense,
catching 64 passes for 1,061 yards and 12 touchdowns."
The newspaper named Brady coach Glen Jones its 2A Coach
of the Year.
A Barnett Family
Christmas
12/26/2008 (submitted)
Merry Christmas all and may you have a Happy and Healthy
2009. The Barnett family Christmas is a wonderful time
for all. We, as you may know, love getting together, we
have the best time.
This Christmas started on Friday, December 19th, Annie's
Birthday, Happy Birthday Annie. The crowd started coming
in early Friday, with gifts and food in hand. The
carport is wrapped in plastic and the fire is burning SO
let the games begin. Yes the dominoes are out and the
kids are playing and the joy in our hearts, it is
wonderful have a family like this.
You
know, we do cook our Christmas meal, but, for Friday
noon the 11 of us that were in town went to Tiffany's.
We had a great meal and didn't leave with out buying
some beautiful wood work. Hidalgo's for Friday night
meal. With so many planning to eat, Annie phoned
and warned them we were coming. Another great job and
great food. Thank you for doing our cooking for us.
Nell, Marty, Randall, Riley, Annie, Billy, Bucky,
Brittney, A.J., Claudia, Glenn, little Randall,
Mitchell, Richard, Donna, Chris, Ricky, Joanne, Oren and
I had a good time.
The big house is not so big when we all come in so
finding places to sleep is another thing we do when we
all come in. Claudia, Glenn, and the boys went to the
motel, Richard, Donna, Chris, Brittney, A.J. And I went
to Annie's (at Annie's we all had a Christmas tree in
our room, she loves Christmas). Nell, Marty, and Bucky
stayed at the big house. We all have a great night
and up early to get started on our Christmas dinner. Of
course we had to eat breakfast first. Randall cooked us
a nice breakfast of bacon, sausage, eggs, toast, juice
and milk. More people arrive and more food too. The
noise is, well, loud would say it best. We are
all having a wonderful time in spite of ourselves.
Christmas dinner was around 12 noon with turkey and
dressing, ham, green bean salad, sweet rice, cream
potatoes, broccoli and rice casserole, yams, deviled
eggs, dill eggs, hot rolls, and tea. Dessert was banana
pudding,
cheese cake, Jello, pecan pie, custard pie, lemon pie,
chocolate pie, cheese cake and lots of cookies and home
made candy made by Claudia. Thanks to all the cooks and
dish washers.
Gift opening can be a trick, trying to get all the
people in one room is not an easy task. We manage to get
the gifts all passed out and opened in an almost civil
manner. The “adults” have their circle of gifts and and
fun time following Joanne's story so we know when to
pass the gift. We pick up all the wrapping paper, making
sure there are no toys with it, and take it to the
trash, now the talking and games can be continued.
Some head home Saturday night, others stayed and talked
late into the night, and no one wanted to call it a
night, but we do get to bed.
Wanting to get home but hating to say good-bye, the ones
that stayed the night start packing and heading home,
after going to Randall's breakfast of more bacon,
sausage, toast, eggs, juice and milk.
With the grace of God we all made it home safe and
sound. Thank God for a wonderful Christmas and for
the greatest gift of all, his son Jesus Christ, for he
is the reason for the season.
This year at the Barnett Christmas were Nell Hopper,
Marty Hopper, Casey Lobstein, Bucky Lobstein, Rinn and
Janey Barnett, Vince, Kelly, Aaron, and EmmaLee Barnett,
Heather, Sammy, and Chloe Portillo from Abilene, Roland
and Jean Barnett, Shirlie Staggs, Matt, Raemma, Erikha,
Kyle and Preston Card from Silver Valley, Rolanda,
Rachel, and Tandra Davis from Lake Brownwood, Bo, Kerri,
Haley, and Braydon Barnett from Novice, Glenn and
Claudia Kemp, Mitchell Priddis and Randall Priddis from
Burkburnett, Richard and Donna Barnett, Chris Barnett,
Brittney Lobstein, and A. J. Ranjel from Wichita Falls,
Randall Barnett from Guy, Ray and Brenda Barnett from
Bronte, Chad, Christy and Brogan Barnett from Paint
Rock, Cara Barnett from Brownwood, Billy and Annie
Brown, Ricky and Joanne Barnett, Oren Barnett, Richie,
Kelli, Zachery, Brandon, and Jacob Brown, Bryan Lucas,

sorry.
We missed the family members that were unable to come
for Christmas and hope to see them all soon.

Christmas Eve in
Leaday
12/22/2008
Everyone is invited to a Christmas Eve program and
fellowship to be held at the Leaday Baptist Church at
6:30pm on December 24th.
The
community tree has been held in Leaday since 1908--
meeting every Christmas with the exception of 1918 when
the influenza epidemic forced families to stay home.
Originally, the Miller
family hosted the get-together for their tenants.
As the community grew, the meeting was moved to the
school-- then to the community center. In 1988,
with the completion of the Ivie Reservoir, the meeting
had to be relocated. Since that time the local
church has hosted the celebration. Leaday Baptist
Church is located on the R9 near Padgitt Park on the
Ivie Reservoir.

CCCWB Taking Donations
thru TUESDAY
12/22/2008
The Coleman County Child Welfare Board is once again
sponsoring the Helping Hands Christmas Project. The
proceeds from this project will be used to purchase
gifts for our Coleman County kids who are receiving
foster care. Even though our kids usually are placed in
a home in a different county for their own protection
and privacy, Coleman County still provides services to
them. Currently, approximately thirty-eight children are
receiving our foster care services. Some of
sponsors that have provided a Christmas tree decorated
with the Helping Hands include Hidalgos No. 1 and No. 2,
Coleman County State Bank, First Coleman National Bank,
CitiBank, Alco, Coleman Chamber of Commerce, and HBC
(former J.E. Stevens building), Santa Anna National
Bank.
Other sponsors will be added to the list as they become
available. Please take a “helping hand” off the tree and
complete the information located on the hand. A place is
provided for designating the donation in memory of or in
honor of someone. The donors and dedications will be
posted in the newspaper, unless you specify that you
want to remain anonymous. For your convenience, you may
ask for an envelope from the sponsors and complete the
information and drop the envelope in the decorated box
by the Christmas tree, or send the donation to the
Coleman County Child Welfare Board, Box 999, Coleman, TX
76834, or drop it off at 114 Needham.

2008, a Disciplinary Panel of the Board entered an Order

Novice Schools to
Offer Veterinary Technology
12/16/2008
One of the presenters to the Novice ISD Board Monday
night was David Wright. He discussed an inter-local
agreement between Novice ISD and
San Juan College in Farmington, NM for on-line dual
credit courses in Veterinary Technology. This would
entail 4 tiers of classes with tier-1 being entirely
online. Mr. Wright stated that this program was the only
one of it's kind in the country and students could gain
college credit (as well as high school credits) and an
employable skill. The cost for the classes will be $40
per credit hour plus books and supplies. Mr. Wright is a
program director for San Juan College and is living in
Novice. This program is not being offered at any other
schools in this area. The board approved this
inter-local agreement. Since these classes are not
offered in this manner in other schools of the area, the
Board feels it could attract interested students to
Novice ISD. Follow this link to
San Juan College to read more about the Veterinary
Technology program.
Novice School Board
Meets, Discusses Financial Crisis
12/16/2008
The
Board of Trustees for the Novice ISD met Monday night
along with Wes Hayes, interim Superintendent, and Diana
Dobbins - Novice ISD Principal and interim
Superintendent as of January 5, 2009. Five of the seven
board members were present. Midway through the board
meeting, there was a discussion on how to resolve the
financial situation facing Novice ISD. Having considered
consolidation options, no action was taken, leaving the
matter to be decided in the Spring semester. The board
feels like Novice ISD is moving in the right direction,
with enrollment presently increasing, and will focus on
growing the school district. Enrollment sits at 105 as
of Monday, December 15th, with 96 in K-12, 2 in Pre-K
(counts as 1), and 7 not eligible for ADA count. There
are still not enough students to "average" the ADA at 90
yet, but the board sees a possibility of achieving that
goal. The attendance was reported at an average of
96.72%. The board gave Diana Dobbins credit for her work
in boosting enrollment and attendance. Novice schools
will be giving prizes at Friday's assembly to perfect
attendance winners. High school boy and girl's names
drawn will receive laptops, junior high names drawn will
receive MP3 players, and elementary will receive a video
game.
During the Public Forum, Terry Test
(pictured
standing)
spoke of a
proposal for a "Plan to Build Enrollment." He gave his
ideas on some specific options available to the board
and the community. One suggestion was to advertise what
Novice ISD has to offer in the surrounding towns as well
as on billboards. After the Minutes of the previous
meeting and bills were approved, Mr. Ron Greiner spoke
on the availability of loans to Novice ISD. Mr. Greiner,
from Government Capital Securities Corp., discussed the
present national economic situation and the difficulty
his company is having obtaining backers for loans for
larger school districts, including Groesbeck ISD.
Following him, Mr. Richard Bowman, CPA, gave the
auditor's report to the board. He made suggestions to
them on methods of improving the school's bookkeeping
system. Gains have already been made in this area, since
August 2008, the date of the Audit Report. The Audit
Report was accepted by the board. Following his
presentation, the board took no action concerning Dr.
Doug Karr providing assistance to Novice ISD on
financial matters.

Look at what has been discovered! Thank you Dana
Travis for doing some "digging" for us and discovering
this amazing photo! This photo is of the Turner Falls
Indian, which is the same as our Indian, who overlooked
Turner Falls lake in Oklahoma. This is the only frontal,
clear, detailed view as of yet that we have been able to
find or be given. My wish is that the mere image
of our Indian will spark many fond memories and stories
and that you as the reader will write them down for us
to be forever recorded in our book that we have decided
to title "A Friend Not Forgotten", The Story of Friend
the Indian of Indian Hill.

Santa Anna Community
Library
Gets Digital Database
of Old Santa Anna News
12/15/2008
The Santa Anna Community Library holds
the archive of almost all of the editions of the old
Santa Anna News, one of the earliest businesses our
city, which was published from 1887 to 1998. It holds
that archive both on the original newsprint and on
microfilm. The celluloid of the microfilm rolls has
deteriorated rapidly, in danger of total loss, to say
nothing of the original newsprint. On questioning of
experts at the Texas State Archive in Austin, Santa Anna
librarians learned about a process for transferring data
on existing microfilm to digital CD format. The
librarians thought this would be a good way to preserve
a local treasure and celebrate our County’s
sesquicentennial in 2008.
Volunteers at the library began searching for companies
that did this process and secured some cost estimates.
In order to do this, the library had to ship a roll of
the microfilm to the agent that processes them to
digital format, where in turn, they processed the sample
and provided a cost estimate-- $4300, a staggering sum
for our local library to secure. At this point the
volunteers at the library approached the Santa Anna
Foundation, a non-profit 501C-3 organization that works
to develop the community of Santa Anna in the areas of
historic preservation, economic development, and
education. Since receiving its IRS designation in 1994,
the Santa Anna Foundation has accomplished several
projects, most notably the awarding of over $10,000 in
scholarships to Coleman County students. Additionally,
with the help of Coleman County Foundation, the Santa
Anna Foundation (SAF) has stabilized, restored, and
enhanced the Civic Center and the surrounding City Park.
Efforts such as these have presented our community with
the opportunity to attract tourism dollars, increasing
our economic development resources, which, in turn
allows us to further develop our local economic
structure.
Having worked with Coleman County Foundation
successfully in the past, SAF proposed another
partnership on the Library project with the Coleman
County Foundation, using matching funds to create a
work-carrel at the library with its own computer and
printer. This provides genealogy buffs, historians, and
other interested citizens ready access to a treasure
trove of Santa Anna history---all free!
The original microfilm and the state-of-the-art digital
format Santa Anna News arrived back at home in the
Library in late October. Everyone involved has expressed
gratitude to the Coleman County
Foundation for its generous contribution to this
worthwhile project affecting the history of the Santa
Anna area.

small round container is the entire collection of the
Santa Anna News reduced to digital for use on the new
computer at the Santa Anna Library. This
collection of the News was donated to the Santa Anna
Library for use in historical research of the area by O.
D. and Polly Warnock, former (and last) owners of the
Santa Anna paper.
The Santa Anna Library Board, funded by the Bill Gates
Foundation through the Texas State Library obtained a
new Computer and Laser printer to use for the viewing
and printing of articles from the old Santa Anna News.
James Pelton of Centex Communications of Goldthwaite
assisted in acquiring and assembling the new system.

What in the world is
that ??
12/12/2008
(by Kim Horne)
I was driving through downtown today (Thursday) and saw
something that caught my eye. It was a smaller RV
with a Chupacabra painted on the hood. I grabbed
my camera and went
over to investigate. "What in the world are you
guys doing?" I asked the two guys in the RV. "Hey!
We're Chupacabra Hunters!". My reply was, "You
guys must have a lot of fun!". These two brothers
from Lubbock set out to Coleman County to talk to Reggie
Lagow about his Chupacabra he had killed a few years
back. The guys said that as far as they know
Coleman is the only US sighting of the Chupacabra.
They were also going to do what they called "From Kill
to Grill", with a local land owner this evening.
These two adventurous brothers will be setting out for
South America in hopes of sighting the rare Chupacabra.
If you would like to track their adventure you can go to
http://benandjoe.com.
I am not sure if they will see an actual Chupacabra but
I can guarantee they will have a fun and memorable time
trying! Good luck guys! Enjoy Coleman while
you are here and come back to visit real soon!
Tough Bull Riding in
NFR Thursday Night
Local Bull Bucks Tonight
12/12/2008
Only two bull riders made
the eight second whistle Thursday night in Las Vegas at
the National Finals Rodeo. Unfortunately, J.W. Harris of
May wasn't one of them. It's only the second bull out of
eight that Harris hasn't ridden this week.
Tonight, Harris will attempt to ride "Savage" from the
Silverado Rodeo Company.
Also tonight, the bull that grew up in Coleman County
will buck. "Silent Image", also of the Silverado Rodeo
Company, is the draw for cowboy Zach Oakes. Silent Image
was raised by local rancher and realtor Ted Taylor.
A fire began Thursday, December 11,
2008 afternoon about 4 miles west of
Valera. The fire spread quickly and moved south as the
wind push it. All area fire departments were on
the scene as well as McCullough County fire dept.
No further information is available at this time.

professional bull riding world is
J.W. Harris of May, Texas. Harris rode to the 8

bull Mortachi from the Korkow Rodeo Company, a second
place finish, worth $13,251.20.

average leaderboard at the National Finals. More
importantly, J.W. is second in the world standings

Christmas for Cutter
12/9/2008
(Contributed)
Christmas is coming up and each of us are looking
forward to spending time with our loved
ones during the celebration of the birth or Jesus.
We will all be enjoying watching our children and
grandchildren opening presents around the Christmas Tree
sharing smiles, laughter, hugs and kisses with our loved
ones near.
Holiday Hill Nursing Home
has become aware of a little boy who has been very sick
and will not have this privilege this Christmas. A
little boy whose second Christmas will be spent in the
hospital. On November 15th, little Cutter Cody,
two year old son of Richard and Dolly Cody, grandson of
Raymond and Mary Hammonds and Daniel and Julie Cody, was
flown to Cook Children's Hospital. His prognosis
is looking good but he still has a very long way to go.
The staff of Holiday Hill
believes in sharing our blessings with others less
fortunate and this year we want to see to it that Cutter
will have a great Christmas. We want to make
Cutter's Christmas a great one. One that will make
him forget the needles and meds for a little while.
We will be sponsoring a toy/clothes drive. We want
to see that Cuttler has many presents to open and is
able to put many smiles on his face. His clothes
sizes are: Pants - Toddler 4 to 5, shirts - 5 to
6, shoes - size 8. To help us help Cutter smile,
you can call Holiday Hill at 325-625-4157 and speak with
Norma or Raylene Watson at 325-636-7850. Keep
Cutter and his family in your prayers. Merry
Christmas and God Bless from Holiday Hill!

Santa Anna Students
Enjoy Quick Connection to College or Career Info
12/8/2008
SAHS student Kelsie Tobin
surfs through the internet to the Texas Tech homepage at
the new College & Career Connection kiosk in the hall at
SAHS. The cart, laptop computer, and career software
were purchased with funds from a Perkins Grant last
spring. SAISD Tech coordinator Becky Loftin configured
the wireless access terminal so that only college and
career information is available at the kiosk.
Counselor Montie Guthrie felt having immediate access to
the internet connection was more likely to engage
students than going to a computer lab. In addition, each
month the kiosk features a different college with items
given away after rotation. ”This is just one of the ways
we are trying to build a ‘college-bound’ culture at SAHS”,
Guthrie said. A college-bound culture is an atmosphere
of pervasive expectations that ALL students will go on
to some form of post-secondary education or training.
Principal David Robinett said, “We put it in the hall so
students could use it quickly if they had a few minutes
of free time—in front of my office.”
SAHS tries to combine the right attitudes with right
actions to develop a college-bound culture. TSTC
instructors in automotive tech, welding, and culinary
arts come to SAHS to make presentations on their
programs. The entire junior class takes a field trip to
Tarleton State University for a tour day each year. SAHS
teachers focus many of their teaching activities at the
junior- and senior-level on early and successful
performance on college tests. In order that seniors are
eligible to take dual-credit college classes via
interactive television at SAHS, the school is a
certified administration site for the THEA
college-readiness test. Along with the belief that every
student can succeed at education or training after high
school, SAISD equips its students with the experiences,
knowledge and skills required to complete college.
CCHC Looking for
Members
12/8/2008
We reported last week that Coleman County’s Historical
Commission (CCHC) needs active commission members to
serve for the 2009-2010 term beginning in January 2009.
This is a follow-up giving more info about why you
should be interested. If
you find this of interest, and would like to be a part
of the action, come to the next CCHC business meeting at
7 p.m., Thursday the 11th, in the Coleman County Chamber
of Commerce meeting room. Be a part of Coleman County’s
past that could be its future. Last week’s article
noted the financial advantages to attracting cultural
and heritage travelers. But, folks have been asking what
historical assets Coleman County has that would attract
tourists. Following is a list of a few of our
‘attractions’. But, as we mentioned last week, without
your help, these undeveloped resources are at best
wasted and at worst, will disappear. Resources such as:
-Camp Colorado on Jim Ned Creek (1857)
One of the original structures exists, in a modified
form, and there is a great deal of Texas history that
deals with the camp. A plus is that it was later
purchased by a former Texas Ranger named Sackett (a
natural draw to fans of Louis Lamour novels).
-Chronicle & Democrat Voice Newspaper Printing
Shop (1881).
This is a fantastic
opportunity. 19th and 20th century printing equipment
fills the room. It is a complete example of how
newspapers were printed before the advent of computers.
The Autry family has offered the use of this facility as
a museum. But we need help in making this an operating
reality.
-Second oldest, still operating, county jail in
the state (1890).
-Coleman High School Building (1926)
In addition to its pure
historic value, this building offers a complete
auditorium and lots of room for parking. A great event
center for plays, films, corporate events and more. It’s
a solid building with very little asbestos.
-WWII Flight Training School.
Although it opened
October 7, 1941 – two months exactly before Pearl
Harbor, and trained thousands of WWII pilots, the
majority of Coleman County citizens don’t know that it
existed.
-Brick Streets (1920’s)
Communities all across
America recognize the value of maintaining or, in some
cases, building back brick streets to add to the
heritage attraction of their communities. Several of our
brick streets need rebuilding where they have been
damaged, usually by underlying utilities. One brick
street needs exposing. Commercial Avenue is brick
covered by asphalt. There now exists a process that can
be used to remove and recover this needed hot mix for
use on other city streets here.
-Santa Anna ‘Mountains’ (sometime after The
Creation). Shown,
un-named, on many early maps, these ‘mountains’ have a
rich history going back to when the only inhabitants of
the area were Indians. They were also used by soldiers,
Texas Rangers and others as a lookout and signaling
post. Later they were mined for their sand (Santa Anna
Silica Sand Mine in Santa Anna) and rock. Sitting at the
foot of one of the mountains is the Texas Ranger Park
which was a depression-era National Youth Adm. (NYA)
project constructed for use by retired Texas Rangers in
1938.
-Numerous architectural attractions such as:
-Soon to be rebuilt (hopefully) 1884 Courthouse
-the Overall (1923) and Morris (1935) Hospital Buildings
-Coleman Power Plant (1930’s)
-Downtown buildings in all communities (Santa Anna is
doing a great job on several)
-Martin Brick Co. plant
-Downtown Coleman ‘Coca Cola’ sign painted on ‘Jesse
Penney’ building
-Coleman Depot (1915?)
-Old Coleman pump stations on Hord’s Creek (1895)
-Sealy Hospital Building in Santa Anna (not much left)
(1917)
-Rock Wall at Coleman High’s ‘Hufford Field’ (1940,
another NYA Project)
-Small Iron Bridges in county
-Waldrip Bridge over Colorado River (1895, 1910, & 1936
[using an 1893 main span])
-Old school buildings: Centennial (1940), Shields
(1918), Talpa (1935), Santa Anna (1941)
-Many Historic County Residences
- Rockwell Bros. Lumber Co. (not many of these old wood
lumber companies around).
-and many more
Heritage Hall Open
House
12/8/2008
Heritage Hall held their Open House on Saturday,
December 6th. Many came out to look at their holiday
decorations. The Christmas tree was decorated in
ornaments that were decorated and donated by every
county in the state of Texas. Each county had to
decorate an ornament that fit their county's theme. The
Heritage Hall will be opened on Saturdays throughout the
holidays. Please, stop in and see this wonderful
tree.
Coleman Man Injured in
Wreck Sunday Evening
12/8/2008
A one vehicle rollover
wreck sent a Coleman man to an Abilene hospital Sunday
night while a passenger in the vehicle received minor
injuries.
According to information from DPS Trooper Pat Salas, the
wreck was reported at 7:23pm Sunday 2.9 miles north of
Santa Anna on FM 1176.
Salas said a Chevrolet sport utility vehicle, driven by
Chris Chambers, 27, of Coleman, was traveling south when
he failed to negotiate a curve, drove off the east side
of the road and went through a fence. The vehicle
overturned several times, throwing Chambers from the
vehicle which came to rest upright. The vehicle then
caught fire.
A passenger in the vehicle, Emilio Darnell Diaz, 27, of
Coleman, remained in the vehicle but was able to get out
before the fire engulfed the vehicle. Diaz received what
Salas described as minor injuries and was treated at the
scene by ambulance personnel. Chambers was flown by
helicopter to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Salas
said. His condition was not known.

Helping Hands
Christmas Project
12/8/2008
The Coleman County Child Welfare Board is once again
sponsoring the Helping Hands Christmas Project.
The proceeds from this project will be used to purchase
gifts for our Coleman County kids who are receiving
foster care. Even though our kids usually are
placed in a home in a different county for their own
protection and privacy, Coleman County still provides
services to them. Currently, approximately
thirty-eight children are receiving our foster
care services. Some of sponsors that have
provided a Christmas tree decorated with the Helping
Hands include Hidalgos No. 1 and No. 2, Coleman
County State Bank, and First Coleman National Bank,
CitiBank, Alco, Coleman Chamber of Commerce, and HBC
(former J.E. Stevens building).
Other sponsors will be added to the list as they become
available. Please take a “helping hand” off
the tree and complete the information located on the
hand. A place is provided for designating the
donation in memory of or in honor of someone. The
donors and dedications will be posted in the newspaper,
unless you specify that you want to remain anonymous.
For your convenience, you may ask for an envelope from
the sponsors and complete the information and drop the
envelope in the decorated box by the Christmas tree, or
send the donation to the Coleman County Child Welfare
Board, Box 999, Coleman, TX 76834, or drop it off at 114
Needham. Donations will be accepted through
Tuesday, December 23, 2008.
If you have any questions, please contact Bonnie Brown
at 625-3148. Thank you for helping make a better

Chamber Of Commerce
Has "White House" Christmas Tree
12/5/2008
The Christmas tree at the Coleman County Chamber of
Commerce is very special this year. Dokie Bledsoe
donated her White House Christmas Ornaments this year to
the Chamber. The ornaments project started in 1981. They
labeled it "The Official White House Ornament." Dokie
explained to me that when they began most of the
ornaments were very plain and flat. Now they are
intricate, colorful and 3 dimensional. Dokie has
collected every ornament from 1981 till 2008. She
usually enjoys them on her home Christmas tree but this
year she generously decided to share them with the rest
of Coleman. Stop by the Chamber located at 218
Commercial.

some of the club members and was very pretty.
Since Coleman County is celebrating the
sesquicentennial this year, we had a special

Thy Faithfulness". Mona Wilson gave the
history of Gouldbusk. Quite a few shared
stories and interesting things about their family
history in the Gouldbusk area. We heard from

Coleman High School Class of
1963 Holds 45th Anniversary Reunion
12/2/2008
The Class of 1963 met for their 45th
Reunion on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at the
Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall in Coleman, Texas.
Approximately 50 classmates and spouses attended.
Registration began at 10:00 a.m. with refreshments
by Carole Stiles Horne, Mary Ann Needham Hartman,
Linda Broyles Lawrence, Liz Ray Rush, and Mrs. Bob
(Sue) Mann. Carole Horne and Elizabeth Boyd
decorated the fellowship hall and tables with
beautiful fall foliage and pumpkins. Carolyn
Miller Murphy made the registration booklet,
and Liz Ray Rush had a wonderful memorial to the
deceased members of the class. A special
thanks to Lavarl Brooks for time and effort spent in
finding lost classmates. Old annuals and
pictures were displayed and enjoyed by all, and much
reminiscing was done about the years gone by,
and of course, a lot of laughing. And yes, you
guessed it, we laughed at the ones not present also.
At
3:00 p.m. we gathered for a tour of the old Coleman
High School, Graves Gym, and group picture.
The buildings have been purchased by one of the
churches in Brownwood with hopes of renovating them
for community purposes. The gym is already
being used by the youth of Coleman.
Hopefully, they will bring our old school back to
life.
At
5:00 p.m. a delicious meal prepared by Classmate,
Severn Mayo and family was enjoyed by all.
As a class, we all helped with the preparations and
serving and thoroughly enjoyed working together.
Even cleaning up was fun.
Bob
Mann conducted a short business meeting, and plans
were made for the 50th reunion which will
be in conjunction with the Multi-Class Reunion.
Fundraiser projects were discussed, and details of
the multi class reunion were explained by Carole
Horne with help from Ralph and Judia Terry.
Individual classes meet, but can also join the
multi-class reunion in order to visit with
classmates of different years. The 50th
reunion promises to be our largest and best so we
hope everyone will make plans to attend. Dates
of the reunion will be posted as soon as possible on
the CHS Alumni Web Page which is maintained by Ralph
Terry. Ralph does an excellent job of
reporting reunion dates and updates information
about alumni, and you need to be faithful about
sending him your updated information. Ralph’s
website is:

advantage of our local web-sites in order to keep up
with the happenings in and around Coleman.
These sites are:

National Finals Rodeo
Time
12/1/2008
The 50th Annual Wrangler National Finals Rodeo begins a
10 day run this Thursday in Las Vegas, Nevada. Many of
the competitors will be familiar to Coleman rodeo fans
as they competed in our local arena back in June during
the Coleman PRCA Rodeo.
Among those we're watching with interest are bull rider
J.W. Harris (pictured right) of May, Texas
but has numerous family
members here in Coleman County.
Coleman Rodeo Association President Ted Taylor will also
be watching the bull riding with interest, but for a
different reason. A bull named Silent Image, raised by
Ted here in Coleman County, is now a part of the
Silverado Rodeo Company string and chosen to buck at the
NFR. Silent Image wasted no time in throwing his cowboy
in Coleman this year as he has done everywhere he has
gone. He's small, but fast, and a handful for whoever
gets on his back.
If you are
a rodeo fan, and want to keep up with the Wrangler NFR,
go to the contestant site at the following link:
