Barbershop Harmony
Society
Coleman, Texas Chapter - The Heartland Harmonizers
5/15/2008
The Heartland Harmonizers
were chartered as part of Barbershop Harmony Society in
August of 1992.
The idea began a few months earlier when several guys
from Coleman, Texas went to San Angelo to visit a
rehearsal of The Twin Mountain Tonesmen. They came home
very excited and decided to form a chorus in this area
of Texas. The San Angelo Chorus became a sponsor, and in
August of 1992, a charter night concert was held in Mims
Auditorium on the Howard Payne University Campus. Since
then, the San Angelo Chorus has continued to give great
support.
Since
the charter night concert, The Heartland Harmonizers
have been active in the Brownwood / Coleman Area of
Texas. Today membership includes singers from Brownwood,
Coleman, and Santa Anna, Texas.
The Heartland Harmonizers
have entertained audiences throughout the area. Each
year we produce a show featuring entertainment by The
Heartland Harmonizers and a special quest quartet.
Other activities include Singing Valentines,
entertaining the community and surrounding area with
barbershop harmony, sponsoring a Men’s Christmas Chorus,
and contributing to area food banks. Recently The
Heartland Harmonizers have made appearance at The
Cherokee Children’s Home, Red Hat Ladies Club, Bangs
Lions Club, HPU Music Sorority and the Santa Anna Tour
of Churches.
Charles Skipping of Brownwood currently directs The
Heartland Harmonizers. Membership in the chorus
is open to all men who like to sing. Rehearsals are held
each Monday night at 6:59 PM at the Austin Avenue Church
of Christ in Brownwood, Texas. Please contact Gary
Absher at 325-203-1609 for more information.

Third Weekend in May

This year’s
Sesquicentennial Funtier Day and World Championship
Bison Cook-off is just around the
corner, and plans are fully underway for Santa Anna’s
premier event. Entries have begun rolling in from
cookers across Texas seeking to claim a piece of the
$4000 prize money. Once again, Stanley Dodge in

planning to have some ‘sweet rides’ on site in Santa
Anna the third weekend in May for visitors to look over.
Also, booth reservations are coming in for the arts and
crafts show and sale. Interested vendors can reserve
spaces inside the civic center or outside in the City
Park, where events from volleyball competition to the
favorite Santa Anna Fire Department water polo will also
take place.
Entertainment will be going all day Saturday, May 17th.
The Texas Tornadoes, Mariachi band, and Ballet
Folklorico from San Angelo have been invited. A dance
Saturday night beginning at 9 pm will rattle the Old
Armory’s windows.
Coordinators of the ever-popular annual event are
looking for help from the community for someone to
oversee the Horseshoe Pitch and supervise the Ice cream
freeze-off. There is also some discussion of the
possibility of a softball tournament for the weekend.
If you seek a booth entry, please call (325) 348-3535.
